How Christian Eriksen returned to football after suffering cardiac arrest on pitch

CNN
 —

It’s been over 18 months since Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch at Euro 2020 after suffering a cardiac arrest.

The Danish midfielder received life-saving treatment during his country’s game against Finland in June 2021, eventually being resuscitated and taken to hospital.

The players on the pitch, those inside the stadium and fans around the world held their breath as Eriksen’s teammates linked arms to hide his fight for survival.

They were scenes that bore similarities with Monday night when Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field.

Like Eriksen, Hamlin also suffered a cardiac arrest. According to the Bills, his heartbeat was restored on the field and the 24-year-old remains in a “critical condition” at a Cincinnati hospital.

Buffalo Bills team trainers got to Hamlin within 10 seconds of his collapse, similar to the team doctors who had saved Eriksen’s life.

“Well, what should I say? He was gone,” said Denmark’s team doctor Morten Boesen at the time.

“And we did cardiac resuscitation and it was cardiac arrest. How close were we? I don’t know.”

Eriksen was later fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) device, a type of pacemaker intended to prevent fatal cardiac arrests by discharging a jolt to restore regular heart rhythm, and made an incredible return to the sport he loved.

Just 259 days after he collapsed, Eriksen made his competitive return in the English Premier League after signing for Brentford.

Eriksen received medical treatment on the pitch at Euro 2020.

Serie A club Inter Milan – whom Eriksen had been contracted to at the time of the incident – let the midfielder move abroad as he was unable to play in Italy unless the ICD device was removed.

Eriksen came on in the 52nd minute in Brentford’s 2-0 loss to Newcastle United in February 2022 and received a hero’s welcome.

“If you take away the result, I’m one happy man. To go through what I’ve been through, being back is a wonderful feeling,” Eriksen said afterward.

After a brief but successful spell at Brentford, Eriksen made the move to Manchester United in July 2022 where he continues to be a pivotal part of the team.

He’s made 15 league appearances so far this season, scoring once.

Then, in November 2022, Eriksen fulfilled his dream of playing for Denmark in a third World Cup.

The 30-year-old played every minute of Denmark’s three games at Qatar 2022, before his nation departed at the group stage.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Eriksen said the incident at Euro 2020 altered his perspective on both football and life.

“I think it gave me… let’s say the appreciation of being alive and being with my family. And I think everything else is just moved to the side,” he told reporters.

“To have the possibility to go back and be who I was before was really the aim. My first aim was always to be a boyfriend and a dad.

“It’s still very special to be at the World Cup. The national team is something I’m just very happy to be part of again.”

MOSCOW, Idaho – Bryan Kohberger, the criminology Ph.D. student suspected of stabbing four University of Idaho students to death in November, was stopped last month in Indiana while on a cross-country road trip with his father to the family’s home in Pennsylvania, according to body camera footage obtained by Fox News Digital.

A wide-eyed Kohberger could be seen leaning over in the driver’s seat of a white Hyundai Elantra after he was pulled over by an Indiana state trooper at approximately 10:50 a.m. on Dec. 15 in Hancock County, Indiana.

“When you were driving by me there you were a little too close to the back of the semi,” the state trooper tells Kohberger and his father, who is sitting in the passenger seat.

Kohberger appears to reference being previously stopped by a local sheriff’s deputy.

“I’m not going to give you guys another ticket or warning if you just got stopped. Just make sure you’re giving yourself plenty of room,” the state trooper said.

UNIVERSITY OF IDAHO MURDERS TIMELINE: WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE SLAUGHTER OF FOUR STUDENTS

Indiana State Police said that at the time of the stop, there was no information available to the trooper about the Idaho murders or the white Hyundai Elantra, which police believe was seen in the immediate area of the slayings on Nov. 13.

Kohberger and his father were on the way back to the family’s home in Albrightsville, Pennsylvania, where the 28-year-old was arrested by authorities in the early hours of Friday morning.

At a court hearing on Tuesday, Kohberger waived extradition and will be brought back to Moscow, Idaho, to face murder charges for the deaths of University of Idaho students Kaylee Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, Xana Kernodle and Madison Mogen.

CRISTIANO RONALDO SIGNS DEAL WORTH $75 MILLION PER SEASON WITH SAUDI ARABIAN CLUB

“I can say now that many opportunities came up in Europe, many clubs in Brazil, in Australia, the USA and even in Portugal, but I gave my word to this club,” Ronaldo explained.

Al Nassr’s president, Musalli Al Muammar, Ronaldo doesn’t want any special treatment.

“Ronaldo asked during the negotiations to be treated like the rest of his teammates, in terms of rewards and club regulations,” he said.

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

Third baseman Rafael Devers and the Boston Red Sox have agreed to a one-year, $17.5 million contract, ESPN reported Tuesday.

The one-year agreement avoids arbitration, and they can still have discussions about a long-term extension.

The 26-year-old is set to become a free agent at the end of the 2023 MLB season

The Red Sox retain Devers for at least another season after they recently lost All-Star shortstop Xander Bogaerts, slugger J.D. Martinez and pitcher Nathan Eovaldi in free agency.

The organization has some motivation to keep the young star in Boston for the foreseeable future. Devers hit .295/.358/.521 with 27 home runs and 88 RBIs last season.

He hit 139 homers over his first six big league seasons.

RANGERS AGREE TO DEAL WITH NATHAN EOVALDI, ADD MORE ROTATION HELP FOR 2023 SEASON: REPORT

Boston did bolster its bullpen this offseason with the signings of relievers Kenley Jansen, Chris Martin and Joely Rodriguez. The Red Sox bullpen had a 4.59 ERA last season, which was fifth-worst in MLB.

The Red Sox also recently added outfielder Masataka Yoshida and infielder Justin Turner to the roster.

Devers, starting pitcher Chris Sale, relievers Matt Barnes and Ryan Brasier are the last remaining holdovers from Boston’s 2018 World Series championship team.

Boston’s lineup will be anchored by Devers in 2023. He joined the big league club during the 2017 season, when the team was in the middle of a pennant race.

Japanese rookie Yoshida, Kiké Hernández, and Alex Verdugo are also expected to be key contributors next season.

Boston is coming off a disappointing 78-84 season and finished in last place in the American League East.

House Democrats cheer as McCarthy fails to clinch speakership multiple times

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

House Democrats cheered after the chamber failed to reach a majority multiple times during a vote for speaker, muddling Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s hopes to secure the top leadership spot.

McCarthy, R-Calif., has yet to emerge triumphant after the first three rounds of votes, during which not a single lawmaker received the majority of votes needed to become speaker: 218. Republicans have 222 lawmakers in the slim majority, so McCarthy can leave only four GOP minds unchanged.

Cheers rang out by Democrats on the House floor following the conclusion of the second round of voting, after 19 Republicans voted for Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio. The total meant that McCarthy again fell short of the majority 218 votes need to become speaker. A third round of voting delivered the same outcome, adding one more GOP vote for Jordan for a total of 20.

Democrats also broke into cheers of “Hakeem, Hakeem, Hakeem” when the nomination of incoming House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., was announced ahead of the third round of votes. The same group similarly cheered when Jordan was nominated by Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., in a slight to McCarthy.

THE VOTE FOR HOUSE SPEAKER: LIVE UPDATES

McCarthy told reporters Tuesday morning that “we are going to have a good day.” But his bid for speaker has since failed so far, with 19 Republicans voting for other representatives each time. The votes marked the first time the House failed to reach a majority in a speaker vote since 1923.

Democratic leadership advised its members to stay present for continued rounds of votes. If some members left, they would be marked as absent, which would lower the total needed for McCarthy to reach the majority needed to clinch the speakership.

Republicans nominated Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., in the first round of votes to challenge McCarthy, then nominated Jordan in the following two rounds.

“Maybe the right person for the job of speaker of the House isn’t someone who wants it so bad,” Gaetz said of Jordan. “Maybe the right person for the job of speaker of the House isn’t someone who has sold shares of himself for more than a decade to get it.”

Jordan voted for McCarthy and introduced him in the second round.

President Joe Biden “certainly will not insert himself” in the House speaker vote process, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Tuesday.

Police responded to reports of a shooting near Bolton Road and Payton Road at around 4:30 a.m. on Dec. 29, and when they arrived, they found a vehicle that was involved in a crash with a victim inside.

That victim was identified as Thomas.

According to WAGA, Atlanta investigators spoke with the driver of a van who called 911 after hearing shots.

“The van observed the victim’s vehicle kind of driving erratically in the middle of the road on Bolton Road,” Atlanta police investigator Peter Malecki said. “When they went to pass that vehicle is when they believe they heard gunfire.”

Police said they think Thomas was killed after the crash, adding they do not believe the two men knew each other and the shooting was the result of a dispute, WAGA reported.

Oliver was taken to the Cobb County Jail and charged with murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm while committing a felony. He does not have a criminal history other than a few traffic violations.

Chinese carrier strike group, drones operating near Japan, which dispatched aircraft to monitor situation

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

Chinese drones were operating near Japan this week, prompting Japanese defense officials to dispatch aircraft and naval ships to monitor the situation, according to media reports.

The unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been transiting the Miyako Strait from the East China Sea into the Pacific and returning the same way, USNI News reported. The Miyako Strait is a waterway between Miyako Island and Okinawa

Meanwhile, Chinese warships were also seen in the East China Sea after two weeks near the Philippines.

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy Liaoning Carrier Strike Group (CSG) was likely heading home after a brief patrol, according to the news outlet.

CHINA’S NEW FOREIGN MINISTER PRAISES AMERICANS, STRIKES FRIENDLY TONE

On Monday, Japan said it scrambled fighter jets and dispatched aircraft and warships over the past two weeks to keep tabs on China’s Liaoning aircraft carrier, Reuters reported.

Japan monitored the operations after the Chinese naval group, which included missile destroyers, sailed between the main Okinawa island and Miyakojima island into the Western Pacific from the East China Sea on Dec. 16, Japan’s Ministry of Defence said in a press release.

Tensions between China and Japan have escalated as Beijing has expanded its military exercises and interests farther out into the Pacific.

CHINESE TRAVELERS FACING COVID-19 TESTING REQUIREMENTS FROM MORE COUNTRIES AMID OUTBREAK

“From my point of view, the U.S. and China have been in war,” Yoko Ishii, a Japanese political commentator, told Fox News in November. “America was fighting against terrorism, but now America has shifted the policy to fight against China.”

Ishii said China has ambitions beyond taking Taiwan as it had “invading” the area around Japan’s Senkaku Islands.

“They come into the waters around our territories like every day, and they do that to make it seem like they own the place,” Ishii said. “China is gradually just coming toward the Pacific Ocean.”

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has accused China of infringing on its sovereignty as the eastern powers grow increasingly aggressive. Chinese fishing and naval vessels have frequently ventured into Japanese waters in recent months.

Twitter blows up over McCarthy speaker woes: ‘Utter chaos and a complete embarrassment’

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

Conservatives and liberals on Twitter exploded on Tuesday as House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy failed repeatedly to secure the votes to be the next House Speaker.

McCarthy, R-Calif., needs 218 votes out of the 222 incoming Republicans to become Speaker of the House, giving just four GOP lawmakers the power to make or break his ambitions for the top spot.

Leftist activist “Jo” tweeted that today was a good day not to be Kevin McCarthy. “Whatever is happening in your life right now, at least you aren’t Kevin McCarthy.”

HOUSE SPEAKER BATTLE: PROFANITIES FLY AS REPUBLICAN FACTIONS GET HEATED OVER MCCARTHY SPEAKERSHIP BID

Collin Rugg, a conservative media personality, tweeted that the establishment was becoming nervous over McCarthy’s speaker debacle. “Matt Gaetz says Republican House members were threatened with removal from committees if they didn’t vote for Kevin McCarthy. The swamp is getting scared.”

When a third vote went against McCarthy, which included Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., switching his vote from McCarthy to Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, liberal podcaster Brian Taylor Cohen wrote, “Holy s—. Republican opposition to Kevin McCarthy just GREW from the last round. McCarthy is in deep, deep trouble.:

THE VOTE FOR HOUSE SPEAKER

Liberal pundit Victor Shi criticized the Republican Party in another viral tweet with over 5,700 likes. “Kevin McCarthy just lost his bid to be Speaker AGAIN with at least 5 House Republicans voting against him so far. If Republicans can’t even nominate a Speaker, how will they pass any substantial legislation? This is utter chaos and a complete embarrassment.”

Shi continued in another tweet: “I wish I was making this up. But I’m not. 6 House Republicans have voted for Jim Jordan so far. Kevin McCarthy might be a bigger loser than even Donald Trump. Wow.”

Top members of the GOP have raged in private and in public over the speakership vote, with Rep. Lauren Boebert R-Colo., saying that the situation was “bull—-” during a Republican House Conference meeting Tuesday.

DAN CRENSHAW CALLS ANTI-MCCARTHY REPUBLICANS ‘ENEMIES’ IN FIERY INTERVIEW

Another conservative critic of McCarthy said Republicans twisting in the wind had it coming to them.

“‘What if the alternative to McCarthy is worse?'” Chronicles’ Pedro Gonzalez wrote. “Then it’s an earned indictment of the GOP. It’s proof the party would rather force-feed people trash than do better. And if that’s the case, then it should happen, and people should reckon with it.”

Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas., became particularly heated over the leadership crisis on Tuesday, telling CN that certain Republicans valued “notoriety over principle,” and even called them “enemies.”

As of Tuesday evening, it doesn’t appear the House is anywhere close to selecting a new Speaker with Republicans in the majority.

Leonardo DiCaprio spotted alongside multiple bikini-clad women on yacht

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

Leonardo DiCaprio was spotted spending the holiday weekend with multiple bikini-clad women on a yacht in St. Barts.

Photos surfaced Monday of DiCaprio wearing a blue bathing suit while soaking up some sun on the yacht.

The “Titanic” actor was photographed alongside multiple women. DiCaprio’s friend Joe Nahmad’s fiancée Madison Headrick was identified as one of the models.

LEONARDO DICAPRIO’S EX-GIRLFRIEND BLASTS ‘AGEIST HEADLINES AND COMMENTS’ AFTER HIS SPLIT WITH CAMILA MORRONE

Recently, DiCaprio, 48, sparked romance rumors with actor Lorenzo Lamas’ 23-year-old daughter Victoria Lamas.

“I know she likes him very much,” Lorenzo told the New York Post. “I think they met last month. I’m not sure of the circumstances, but that’s what she told me.”

DiCaprio became a single man once again in August after ending a four-year relationship with actress Camila Morrone. Victoria and DiCaprio were spotted leaving a Hollywood hotspot together on Dec. 20.

“She’s very smitten,” Lorenzo said. “I told her to treat the relationship like a holiday – just enjoy it as much as you can for as long as it lasts. And if it lasts for more than a typical holiday, great. But if not, then just guard your heart, you know? Because she’s very young.”

The “Renegade” actor joked, “I just told her, you know, absolutely no transatlantic cruises with Leo. Anyway, I’m excited for her. I know that it’s been a while since she’s had a serious relationship.… She’s got a big heart, and she tends to give it freely.”

Victoria is one of Lamas’ three daughters with ex-wife, Playboy playmate Shauna Sand. The couple divorced in 2002.

DiCaprio has also been linked to model Gigi Hadid since he ended his relationship with Morrone.
