Vice President Harris reaches 2023 at a crossroads

Just In | The Hill

Vice President Harris finds herself at a crossroads as she enters her third year in office.

After a bumpy start, which saw a string of missteps and a slew of staff departures, Harris has sought to steady the ship.

Now, as President Biden is expected to run for reelection, Harris will need to support him in that effort while making her case that she’s able to step in at a moment’s notice and can follow him to the White House in 2028.

“The vice president is at an interesting place,” said one Democratic strategist. “In some ways she still has to prove she can be president, but she also has to walk a fine line and show she’s supporting the president and not her own agenda.”

Harris’s approval ratings remain largely underwater. FiveThirtyEight and other surveys show her job performance ratings hovering around 40 percent, with nearly 50 percent disapproving, a metric strategists say is reflective of her standing within the party.

“She does not have the type of dominant sway that most Democrats would want her to have in a few years as the standard-bearer of the party,” a second strategist said. “And this is the time for her to get there.”

Harris may win a little more freedom and flexibility in 2023 with Democrats gaining a 51st seat. The vice president has spent much of her time at the Capitol over the past two years, casting a number of tiebreaking votes.

Democrats now control 51 seats, though one of those is held by Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (Ariz.), who became an independent earlier this month. Sinema usually votes with Democrats on legislation, but she and fellow centrist Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) may keep Harris in the Senate at times next year.

To date, the vice president has cast 26 pivotal tie breaking votes, including the passage of the Democrats’ sweeping climate and tax bill, as well as to approve many of Biden’s nominees, including Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.

At the halfway point of her tenure, even some of her supporters acknowledge Harris still lacks a defined portfolio and a brand.

Basil Smikle, director of the public policy program at Hunter College who served as the executive director of the New York State Democratic Party, said some of the scrutiny and doubts surrounding Biden have diminished on the heels of the president’s legislative victories and the Democrats’ performance in the midterm elections.

That took some pressure off Harris, he said.

“But the question now is, will the vice president’s platform within the administration change substantively so she can be viewed as someone to whom the president can pass the torch?”

“Are there some policies that she can marshal that provide enough of a victory when the time comes? For her own trajectory, what are the key policy areas that she can tackle?” he added.

During her first two years in office, Harris’s portfolio has included examining root causes of migration — a complicated task that has created political difficulties at times for the vice president.

She also was tasked with putting forward federal voting rights legislation, an issue she reportedly asked to take the lead on. And, in the wake of the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, she crisscrossed the country, visiting local leaders and reproductive rights activists.

Harris has indicated that she will continue her focus on reproductive rights in the next two years, a move that will please the party’s base. Biden called for the Democratic-controlled Congress to codify Roe v. Wade, but Democrats did not have the votes in the Senate to pass such a bill. The vice president told NPR that she wants to keep trying.

“There is the work that we need to do to continue to appeal to the common sense and goodwill of members of the United States Congress to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act with a recognition that this issue is fundamentally about the issue of freedom and liberty,” she said in an interview that aired on Tuesday.

She added that other issues she will focus on over the next two years include uplifting small businesses in the U.S. and giving them greater support to access capital, as well as international issues like the U.S. relationship with Indo-Pacific nations.

But her policy portfolio has been a point of contention during her tenure.

In “The Fight of His Life,” a new book about Biden’s first two years of office, second gentleman Doug Emhoff reportedly complained about Harris’s policy portfolio, according to Politico. “Biden was annoyed,” one excerpt reads. “He hadn’t asked Harris to do anything he hadn’t done as vice president — and she’d begged him for the voting rights assignment.”

The second strategist said the passage was indicative of a large problem for Harris: “She has to find an issue she owns.”

“She’s not the Recovery Act Person or the COVID person or the voting rights person. She could be the champion of women’s rights. But she and her team have to be dogged in approaching that.

“She needs to create and demonstrate value not just to Biden but Democrats writ large and for the country,” the strategist said. “She needs to go figure out a thorny policy issue … something that can be packaged and sold to voters and turned into a narrative.

“Biden was ‘Middle class Joe’, Barack Obama was ‘Hope and change.’ Ron DeSantis is ‘Own the libs,’ ” the strategist continued. “What’s her through line? What’s her thing?”

Other Democrats argue Harris was an asset on the campaign trail during the midterm elections and will be a boost to her party in 2024.

“I suspect as much as she can be out on the road, she will be. I think she’s a pretty great asset to the president, particularly with the Democratic base, and to be out there rallying the troops is a good thing,” said David Thomas, who served as deputy director of legislative affairs for former Vice President Al Gore.

Steve Elmendorf, a Democratic lobbyist and donor, said that getting out of Washington will help Harris build her own profile.

“I think you’ll see an entirely different kind of campaigning and time spent out there, which is why the one-seat majority makes a big difference,” he said. “Running a presidential campaign where one of the principals has to be near Washington is hard. Having that one seat majority and letting her get out and campaign more is good.”

Elmendorf said every vice president takes criticism. “I think the job is by definition a hard job and people always want to minimize the role of the vice president,” Elmendorf said. “I don’t find all of the criticism of her to be all that unusual.”

“I think she was an asset to getting him elected, she has been an asset so far and she will be an asset to the reelection, and I think having a better Senate majority will allow her to get out and demonstrate that.”

Lions bounce Bears to set up Week 18 showdown against rivals with playoff spot on the line

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

Jared Goff threw two of his three touchdown passes to Brock Wright in the first half, and the Detroit Lions beat the Chicago Bears 41-10 on Sunday to remain in the playoff chase.

The Lions (8-8) have won seven of nine to give themselves a shot at earning a postseason spot for the first time since 2016 going into their regular-season finale at Green Bay.

The Justin Fields-led Bears (3-13) took two leads in the opening quarter before collapsing and losing a franchise-record ninth straight game.

Goff completed passes to 10 teammates and an 11th, rookie receiver Jameson Williams, ran 40 yards on a reverse early in the third quarter to set up Jamaal Williams’ 15th rushing score that gave Detroit a three-touchdown lead.

Jamaal Williams had a career-high 144 yards rushing on 22 carries and D’Andre Swift added 117 yards from scrimmage and two scores.

Swift put the Lions up for good with a 17-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter and his 21-yard reception put them ahead by four touchdowns in the third.

COMMANDERS’ CARSON WENTZ FACES BOOS AS HE THROWS TWO INTERCEPTIONS IN FIRST HALF

Goff was 21 of 29 for 255 yards and did not throw an interception for an eighth consecutive game.

Meanwhile, rookie pass rusher Aidan Hutchinson got the better of Fields, forcing two turnovers in the first half.

Fields started strong, running for 105 yards in the first quarter alone and throwing a 13-yard touchdown to Cole Kmet, before Hutchinson recovered his fumble and picked off his pass in the second quarter.

Fields finished with 132 yards rushing, giving him 1,143 this year. With a game to play at home against Minnesota, he has a chance to break the single-season NFL quarterback rushing record of 1,206 yards set by Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson in 2019 during his MVP season.

When Detroit shut down Fields’ ability to run for the final three quarters, he was in trouble. Fields was 7 of 21 — completing a season-low 33.3% of his passes — for 75 yards.

INJURIES

Bears: OGs Michael Schofield III (knee) and OL Teven Jenkins (neck) were injured during the game while WR Dante Pettis and DB Jaylon Jones were evaluated for concussions.

Lions: RB Justin Jackson (ribs) and S DeShon Elliott (shoulder) were inactive.

UP NEXT

Bears: Mercifully close the season at home against Minnesota next Sunday.

Lions: Play the Packers on the road next Sunday.

Ex-Capitol Police chief warns agency still ‘not in a better place’ two years after Jan. 6 failures: book

Just In | The Hill

Former Capitol Police chief Steven Sund writes in a forthcoming book that issues remain at the agency two years after “a failure” in its upper ranks left it unprepared for the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection.

“Almost two years after the events of Jan. 6, the department is not in a better place or on a readier footing,” Sund wrote in his book “Courage Under Fire,” according to The Washington Post, which obtained a copy in advance of its Tuesday publication.

“Few people in the department feel there is a viable plan to move the agency into a better position. Hundreds of officers have left the department since Jan. 6 and many feel it is only going to get worse.”

Sund said in the book that despite the FBI, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Capitol Police’s intelligence unit being alerted to indications that right-wing extremists were arming for an attack on the Capitol weeks before Jan. 6, the agencies failed to take even basic steps to act on those warnings, according to the Post. He also said senior military leaders delayed sending help due to political and tactical concerns.

“The security and information-sharing policies and mandates put in place after September 11 failed miserably on January 6,” Sund wrote. “We failed miserably to see the apparent warning signs and the danger, like a ‘gray rhino,’ charging right at us.”

Sund said he wasn’t warned about the red flags the agencies had received, which included calls for protesters to come armed, attack Capitol tunnels and be willing to shoot officers, per the Post.

While applauding Capitol Police officers who responded to the attack, he said that leaders in his department had failed.

“Many of our Capitol Police just acted so bravely and with such concern for the staff, the members, for the Capitol … and they deserve our gratitude. But there was a failure at the top of the Capitol Police,” he said, adding that the “biggest intelligence failure was within my department.”

He also wrote that he learned following the attack that the sergeants-at-arms hired by Senate and House leaders declined a request he made days before Jan. 6 that the National Guard by put on standby because they thought House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) wouldn’t permit it, according to the Post.

He said flaws in the power structure at the agency, such as congressional leaders’ political concerns overruling the chief’s security assessments, remain, per the outlet.

Sund warned that the department’s command structure, which he wrote had serious consequences on Jan. 6, is “a recipe for disaster.”

He recommended a fundamental change in the power structure under which congressional leaders would let future Capitol Police chiefs carry out their own security plans alone, rather than having to report to the Capitol Police Board, according to the Post.

“The security apparatus that exists on Capitol Hill creates a no-win situation for whoever is chief. You have the Capitol Police Board, four oversight committees, and 535 bosses plus their staffs telling you what to do,” Sund wrote.

Sund stepped down the day after the insurrection following Pelosi’s public call for his resignation.

“No one holds themselves more accountable than I do” for the officers’ experiences that day, Sund wrote, “and I wish I could have done more.”

But Sund wrote he also regrets resigning before he saw the full picture about the intelligence he never received, which he said would have prompted him to develop a different security plan, according to the Post.

Patriots’ playoff hopes still alive as defense buckles down to beat Dolphins

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

The New England Patriots extended the Miami Dolphins’ losing streak to five games in a 23-21 victory that has them on the edge of clinching a playoff spot.

The Patriots will now head to the TV to watch the New York Jets, who they need to lose to get in as the final wild card team this week.

The Dolphins, now 8-8 just like New England, head into Week 18 needing to win and the Patriots to lose if they wish to make the playoffs.

Miami had to go into this game with Teddy Bridgewater under center, as Tua Tagovailoa continues to be in concussion protocol. But while Bridgewater was having himself a solid game, he injured a finger in his throwing hand and had to come out, leaving rookie Skylar Thompson to take over.

Bridgewater’s injury came on a crucial play, as he was picked off on a pass intended for Trent Sherfield and Patriots safety Kyle Dugger took that interception to the house for a 39-yard pick-six.

It gave New England a 16-14 lead, and they would add to it later in the fourth quarter with an 11-play, 89-yard drive that resulted in Jakobi Meyers going up to snatch a pass from Mac Jones for a one-yard touchdown, a necessary score to leave home with a win.

Thompson made a push late in the game, going 61 yards in nine plays for a Mike Gesicki touchdown that made it 23-21 with just under a minute to play.

But the Dolphins couldn’t convert on the onside kick attempt, as Hunter Henry fell on it and allowed the Patriots to kneel out the clock.

Jones finished the game with 203 yards and two passing touchdowns, his first coming on a seven-yard pass to Tyquan Thornton on the Patriots’ opening drive of the game.

Bridgewater would orchestrate a drive that saw Tyreek Hill rush for two yards to tie the game at seven immediately after the Patriots scored, and he added a nifty pitch to Raheem Mostert in the third quarter for a two-yard score to make it 14-7.

Bridgewater finished the game 12 of 19 for 161 yards with one touchdown and one interception, while Thompson went 12 of 21 for 104 yards.

BILL BELICHICK IGNORES QUESTIONS ABOUT MAC JONES’ CONTROVERSIAL TACKLE, NOTION THAT HE’S A DIRTY PLAYER

There wasn’t much run game for either team in this contest, with the Patriots totaling 77 yards to the Dolphins’ 86 yards. Rhamondre Stevenson had 42 yards on just eight carries, while Jeff Wilson Jr. had 45 yards on 15 carries. Mostert also had 29 yards on nine touches.

With the Buffalo Bills on the schedule next week for the Patriots, they certainly are hoping the Seattle Seahawks can take down the Jets so they don’t have to worry about beating the current No. 1 seed in the AFC.

As for the Dolphins, they have the Jets on the schedule in Miami for Week 18.

The start of 2023 means carrying a gun without a license is now legal in half of US states: ‘Lipstick, an iPhone, maybe a little Smith & Wesson .38’

Business Insider

President Donald Trump greets newly-appointed Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey before signing the Education Federalism Executive Order in the Roosevelt Room of the White House on April 26, 2017.

You don’t need a permit to carry guns in half of US states.
Alabama’s permitless carry law went into effect with the start of the new year.
Over the past two decades, gun control laws have weakened at the state and federal levels.

With the start of the new year, it became significantly easier for Alabamians to legally carry guns.

The state passed a law last year allowing people to carry concealed handguns without state permits, a change that went into effect on January 1.

The law signaled a gun rights landmark for the US: Now, half of the 50 states allow people to carry handguns without permits.

It’s a mark of how gun control rights have expanded within the US over the past two decades. In 2010, for instance, only two states allowed people to carry guns without permits. In the 13 years since, however, almost 24 states have passed similar laws, 11 of which were greenlit in the last three years, The Huffington Post’s Roque Planas reported Sunday.

State governments have loosened gun control over the past 20 years, even as activism in the wake of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the 2018 Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, and others ramped up. More than 600 mass shootings transpired in the US in 2022, making it the second-highest annual total for mass shootings on record, according to data compiled by the Gun Violence Archive, a non-profit tracking gun violence.

There were more mass shootings in the last half decade than in any other five-year period going back to 1966, the Marshall Project found last year.

One recent study from left-leaning public policy think tank Center for American Progress found that homicide rates were higher in states with weaker gun laws.

Alabama lawmakers in particular faced pressure from pro-gun advocates and groups such as the National Rifle Association to pass the new law.

It’s proved politically popular for many Republicans across the country. Over 100 television ads from GOP Midterm candidates have used guns as talking points or “visual motifs” last year, according to a New York Times analysis

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey highlighted her support for the law during her re-election campaign, which included an ad showing Ivey at her desk at the Alabama Capitol pulling a handgun out of her purse, followed by lipstick and a cell phone.

“Lipstick, an iPhone, maybe a little Smith & Wesson .38,” she says.

The Supreme Court ruled last year that the US Constitution protects an individual’s right to carry a gun outside the home for self-defense in a 6-3 decision that dramatically expanded Second Amendment rights — a move that the Department of Justice opposed

Guns have become a part of political protests, too, such as at an anti-trans rally attended by the Proud Boys, which the Southern Law Poverty Center classifies as a hate group, last year.

TSA finds gun parts hidden in peanut butter jars at JFK Airport

A Rhode Island man was arrested last week after TSA agents discovered parts of a disassembled semi-automatic handgun disguised within two jars of peanut butter in his luggage, according to a news release from the TSA.

The agency said a checked bag containing the peanut butter jars triggered an alarm in an X-ray unit at JFK airport on December 22. Closer inspection revealed the gun parts, wrapped in plastic and “jammed” into two jars of what appear to be Jif brand peanut butter. The gun’s magazine was loaded with bullets, according to the TSA.

“The gun parts were artfully concealed in two smooth creamy jars of peanut butter, but there was certainly nothing smooth about the way the man went about trying to smuggle his gun,” said John Essig, TSA’s federal security director for JFK Airport, in the release. “Our officers are good at their jobs and are focused on their mission — especially during the busy holiday travel period.”

Port Authority Police confiscated the handgun parts and arrested the man, according to the TSA.

Travelers planning to bring firearms onto a plane must have the proper permits, declare their weapons, and pack them according to TSA guidelines. The civil penalty for attempting to bring undeclared weapons onto a flight can be as high as $15,000.

Tom Brady, Mike Evans put together monster performances to lift Bucs to NFC South-clinching win

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

Tom Brady reminded the Carolina Panthers and the rest of the NFL world why he’s considered the greatest football player of all time with a monster performance in the team’s win Sunday.

Brady had three touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown to lift the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a 30-24 victory over the Panthers and clinched the NFC South title.

The seven-time Super Bowl champion found Mike Evans twice in the fourth quarter. The first touchdown came with 13:49 left and answered a Sam Darnold touchdown pass to Shi Smith. The Brady-Evans touchdown was for 57 yards and cut the deficit to five points.

The Buccaneers took the lead with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Brady to Evans. Tampa Bay went up three points after the two-point conversion. The defense would then force a Darnold fumble and Brady would get set up at the goal line on Tampa Bay’s second play following the turnover and score on a sneak.

Brady finished the game 34-of-45 with 432 passing yards and had three touchdown passes – all to Evans. It was the first time he’s gone over 400 yards passing since Week 16 against the New York Jets.

Evans and Godwin each had 100 or more receiving yards. Evans finished with 10 catches for 207 yards. Godwin had nine catches for 120 yards.

The Buccaneers’ defense also played strong.

GIANTS CLINCH FIRST PLAYOFF BERTH SINCE 2016 IN BLOWOUT WIN VS COLTS

Despite allowing 24 points, Tampa Bay’s defense kept the offense in the game and allowed Brady to strike at the most opportune moments. The team recovered two fumbles and picked off Darnold once.

Darnold finished 22-of-36 with 316 passing yards with three touchdown passes and an interception to Sean Murphy-Bunting.

D.J. Moore led the way with six catches for 117 yards and a touchdown. Smith had four catches for 70 yards and a touchdown. Tommy Tremble had three catches for 33 yards and a touchdown.

Three Panthers were in double digits in tackles – Frankie Luvu (13), Jeremy Chinn (12) and Shaq Thompson (12).

All Tampa Bay needed to do in Week 17 was win and they would be in. They did just that. It’s the third straight season the Buccaneers will be in the playoffs and it’s the second consecutive time the organization can call itself an NFC South champion.

For Brady, the victory allowed him to avoid missing the playoffs. He’s made every postseason since 2008, when he missed the entire year with a devastating knee injury.

The division title puts a cap on a wild regular season in which it didn’t appear Tampa Bay was going to pull it off as injuries piled up and the offense looked out of sync for most of the year. But now, the Buccaneers are getting hot entering the most important part of the year.

The Weird Ford Mustangaro/Camarostang Has Been Crashed

Carscoops

A fifth-generation Ford Mustang dressed up as a Chevrolet Camaro has popped up for auction after being involved in an accident.

This Mustang is unlike any other that we’ve come across. While it looks pretty much like any other Mustang of this era from the rear and sides, it has the front fascia and hood of a Chevrolet Camaro. It includes the same grille and air intakes as a Camaro and while the headlights appear to be aftermarket units, they too are very similar to those of a Camaro you could buy from a Chevy dealership.

The Ford has been listed through Copart as having sustained damage to the front end. These images show that the upper part of the front grille is missing and that damage has been done to the front bumper and hood. Other than the front end, however, the car doesn’t appear to have suffered too much damage and the listing confirms that it still runs and drives.

It is not just the Camaro fascia that makes this Mustang stand out. The previous owner of it has also kitted it out with the interior of a Camaro, complete with the same instrument cluster as Chevy’s muscle car and even a Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system.

Copart says the car has an estimated retail value of $25,000 but due to the modifications it has undergone, we don’t think it is actually worth that much. Repairing it to its ‘former glory’ will require sourcing new front-end components but shouldn’t be too expensive as it seems the fascia has aftermarket parts, rather than a genuine Chevrolet bumper, grille, and lights.

Jaguars one step closer to division title after blowout win over Texans

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

Travis Etienne ran for 108 yards and a touchdown before halftime, Tyson Campbell returned a fumble for a score and the Jacksonville Jaguars snapped a nine-game skid against Houston by routing the Texans 31-3 on Sunday for their fourth straight victory overall.

Jacksonville (8-8) is in first place in the AFC South and would win the division for the first time since 2017 with a victory at home over slumping Tennessee next week in the regular-season finale. The Titans (7-9) have dropped six straight.

Trevor Lawrence threw for 152 yards, but played just one possession in the second half, and Etienne didn’t carry the ball after halftime with the Jaguars up 28-3 in what would be the team’s first win over Houston since 2017.

The Jaguars were up by 21 at halftime and a 3-yard run by Snoop Conner made it 28-0 early in the third quarter.

The Texans (2-13-1) snapped a nine-game losing streak with a win over Tennessee last week but struggled in all areas Sunday against Jacksonville to leave them without a home win for the first time in franchise history.

Davis Mills threw for 202 yards, but couldn’t get the Texans in the end zone and fumbled the ball Campbell returned for the touchdown.

NFL OFFICIATING DRAWS IRE AFTER DOLPHINS FUMBLE TAKEN OFF THE BOARD VS PATRIOTS

Houston was stopped on fourth-and-1 from its 45 on the first possession to give Jacksonville great field position on its first drive. The Jaguars took a 7-0 lead when JaMycal Hasty scored on a 5-yard run.

Jacksonville made it 14-0 when Etienne dashed 62 yards for a touchdown early in the second quarter. Rookie Jalen Pitre had a shot to stop him at the line, but missed the tackle and Etienne simply outran the rest of Houston’s defenders for the score.

The defense got in on the scoring when Josh Allen sacked Mills on Houston’s next possession and forced a fumble which was scooped up by Campbell and returned 12 yards for a TD to make it 21-0. It was the first touchdown of his career.

Desmond King intercepted Lawrence after that, but the Texans came up empty when Mills threw an incomplete pass on fourth-and-5 from the 10.

Houston finally got on the board when Ka’imi Fairbairn’s 56-yard field goal made it 28-3 with about six minutes left in the third quarter.

Riley Patterson extended the lead to 31-3 with a 53-yard field goal with about six minutes remaining.

C.J. Beathard took over after Lawrence went out and threw for 29 yards and was picked off by Pitre, who leads the Texans with five interceptions this season.

KIRK’S MILESTONE

Jacksonville’s Christian Kirk had 21 yards receiving to give him a career-high 1,009 this season, making him the fifth player in franchise history with a 1,000-yard receiving season.

Idaho murder suspect Bryan Kohberger’s family issues statement after his arrest: ‘Presumption of innocence’

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

The family of the suspect in the Nov. 13 fatal stabbings of four University of Idaho students have finally spoken out after his arrest on Friday.

Bryan Christopher Kohberger, 28, was taken into custody by local police and the FBI at 1:30 p.m. Friday in eastern Pennsylvania on a warrant charging him with four counts of murder and burglary for the deaths of Ethan Chapin, 20, Xana Kernodle, 20, Kaylee Goncalves, 21, and Madison Mogen, 21.

“We have fully cooperated with law enforcement agencies in an attempt to seek the truth and promote his presumption of innocence rather than judge unknown facts and make erroneous assumptions,” Kohberger’s family said in a statement released by his public defender, Jason A. LaBar.

The family said they “will continue to let the legal process unfold and as a family we will love and support our son and brother.”
