Morphe makeup planning to close all US stores

Just In | The Hill

Morphe makeup, a cosmetics company known for its collaborations with social media stars, announced Friday that it is planning to close all stores in the U.S.

In a statement posted to Twitter Friday, the company said customers can continue to shop the Morphe brand online, at select retailers and at stores outside the U.S., which will remain open. There were nearly 20 U.S. stores listed on the Morphe website Friday, with nearly 10 located in California alone.

“We have made the difficult decision to close all Morphe stores in the U.S.,” Morphe tweeted. “We are forever grateful to our store teams for their passion, talent and dedication over the years.”

Morphe collaborations with social media personalities James Charles and Jeffree Star gained them popularity in the past, but eventually cut ties with both of them after Charles was accused of sexual misconduct in 2021 and Star was accused of using racist language in 2020. Bloomberg reported that these collaborations helped the company’s revenue top $400 million in 2019, but ultimately led to revenue falling in 2021 after cutting ties with the internet celebrities.

Morphe reintegrated its company into Forma Brands in 2020, which in addition to manufacturing its own makeup, would purchase other beauty brands under the company umbrella, The New York Times reported. Forma Brands then announced its new brands, including Morphe 2, Such Good Everything and Bad Habit, which was a skincare brand with social media celebrity Emma Chamberlain as its creative director.

Such Good Everything, a vitamin and supplement label, is no longer advertised on its website and Chamberlain is no longer involved with Bad Habit, according to the New York Times.

Morphe products are still sold in some retailers, including Ulta Beauty and Target, according to their respective websites.

NFL owners approve resolution to adjust AFC playoff sites if needed following canceled Bills-Bengals game

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

The NFL approved a resolution to potentially move the AFC championship game to a neutral site after Thursday’s cancellation of the Week 17 matchup between the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals to “mitigate a possible competitive inequity” in the AFC playoffs.

The NFL said in the resolution released Friday afternoon that league owners came to the decision during a special league meeting to create the fairest possible scenario based on two teams having played one less game in the regular season.

“For the 2022 season only, the AFC Championship Game will be played at a neutral site, to be determined by the Commissioner, if (A) the participating teams played a different number of regular season games; and (B) the lower seeded team in the Championship Game could have been the number one seed in the AFC if a full 17-game regular season had been played by all AFC clubs,” the resolution stated in part.

BENGALS’ JOE MIXON SEEMINGLY TAKES ISSUE WITH NFL POSTSEASON SEEDING CHANGES FOLLOWING CANCELED GAME VS. BILLS

“And further Resolved, that unless both participating clubs could have been the number one seed in the AFC and host the Championship Game had they played a full 17-game regular season, the game shall be played at the home stadium of the higher-seeded team.”

The resolution also approved a coin toss to decide the site of a potential wild-card game between the Bengals and Baltimore Ravens.

If Baltimore were to beat Cincinnati Sunday and the two face off the following week in the wild-card round, the Ravens would still lose home-field advantage despite having two wins over a division opponent because the Bengals were awarded the AFC North title with the “no-contest” ruling.

“Unless both conditions are met, the site of any Wild Card Game involving Baltimore and Cincinnati shall be determined per Article XX of the Constitution and Bylaws. Irrespective of where a Wild Card game between Baltimore and Cincinnati is played, all teams will retain their seeding as determined by the regular season winning percentage throughout the playoffs and for other competitive determinations.”

The AFC championship game could be at a neutral site under three different scenarios.

Buffalo and Kansas City both win or both tie. A Buffalo vs. Kansas City championship game would be played at a neutral site.

Buffalo and Kansas City both lose and Baltimore wins or ties. A Buffalo vs. Kansas City championship game would be at a neutral site.

Buffalo and Kansas City both lose and Cincinnati wins. A Buffalo or Cincinnati vs. Kansas City championship game would be at a neutral site.

“As we considered the football schedule, our principles have been to limit disruption across the league and minimize competitive inequities,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Thursday.

“I recognize that there is no perfect solution. The proposal we are asking the ownership to consider, however, addresses the most significant potential equitable issues created by the difficult, but necessary, decision not to play the game under these extraordinary circumstances.”

Fox News’ Ryan Morik contributed to this report.

Employers Are Starting to Do Something New That You Won't Like

Going viral on the internet  almost always comes down to a mix of luck and hitting a nerve that resonates with many other people.

When 24-year-old engineer Zaid Khan posted a TikTok video about how he was “quitting the idea of going above and beyond” at work, he inadvertently set off a firestorm of people who also felt like they were tired putting in a lot of effort with very little return.

By the end of the year, thousands of articles appeared both celebrating and vilifiyng the idea. The fundamental shift in attitude toward working but not making your job your life is a complete counterswing from the “hustle culture” that had been getting popularized by some young professionals over the last decade. The New Yorker magazine even included “quiet quitting” in its round-up of some of the most significant cultural phenomenons to occur in 2022.

Cathay Pacific ramps up flights between Hong Kong and China as borders reopen

Hong Kong
CNN
 —

Hong Kong’s flagship airline is more than doubling its flights from the city to mainland China after the easing of pandemic restrictions, raising hopes of a recovery after dramatically cutting operations and suffering losses.

Cathay Pacific Airways’ ramped up flight schedule was announced after China confirmed on Thursday that it will reopen the mainland’s border with Hong Kong on January 8, nearly three years after it was largely shut in an effort to contain the spread of Covid. From Sunday, quarantine requirements for international arrivals in China and a number of Covid restrictions on airlines will be scrapped.

Cathay will resume 61 return flights from Hong Kong to 13 cities in mainland China from January 14, according to a statement Thursday. It also aims to operate more than 100 return flights per week between the city and destinations in China by March.

The airline currently operates 27 flights a week from Hong Kong to the mainland, and 50 in the opposite direction. It said it expects to reach about 70% of pre-pandemic passenger capacity by the end of this year and a full recovery by the end of 2024.

From Sunday, up to 60,000 Hong Kong residents will be able to cross the border each day as a gradual reopening begins. The quota allows 50,000 people to travel via three land checkpoints, and 10,000 via Hong Kong International Airport, two ferry piers and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge.

Another 60,000 people will be allowed to travel from mainland China into Hong Kong daily.

The cap does not apply to Hong Kong residents returning to the city from the mainland, or mainland Chinese traveling back from Hong Kong. All travelers will be required to test negative for Covid via a PCR test within 48 hours prior to crossing.

Pandemic border restrictions took a heavy toll on families and businesses with ties on both sides and there is huge pent up demand for travel. By 11 p.m. local time Thursday, more than 250,000 people in Hong Kong had applied to cross into the mainland, according to the city’s government.

Cathay Pacific suffered a serious hit from the pandemic as the once-bustling travel and financial hub of Hong Kong was largely closed off from the rest of the world as it followed China’s hardline zero-Covid approach.

The carrier reported a net loss of 21.65 billion Hong Kong dollars ($2.8 billion) in 2020, followed by another net loss of 5.5 billion Hong Kong dollars ($707.9 million) in 2021, according to its annual reports to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.

The airline laid off 5,300 employees in Hong Kong in 2020 and its usual capacity was reduced to just 2% at one point. Hong Kong gradually eased travel restrictions in the second half of last year and scrapped mandatory quarantine in September.

According to Cathay Pacific, the airline carried more than 526,000 passengers in November 2022, an increase of over 600% compared with November 2021 – though still nearly 80% down compared with pre-pandemic levels in November 2019.

FDA approves new Alzheimer’s drug that moderately slows disease

Just In | The Hill

An experimental Alzheimer’s drug that moderately slows cognitive decline was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Friday.

The drug, called lecanemab, was granted conditional approval based on a study finding it reduced levels of a protein called amyloid from the brains of people with early-stage Alzheimer’s.

The drug was approved through the agency’s accelerated pathway, which FDA can use to approve drugs based on early trial results for serious conditions where there is an unmet medical need, and if the drug is shown to have a reasonable clinical benefit to patients.

FDA based its approval on a single study of 856 patients with Alzheimer’s disease. While modest, the results were the first to show that reducing amyloid can benefit patients.

The medication will be sold under the brand name Leqembi and marketed by Japan’s Eisai and its U.S. partner Biogen.

The approval gives Biogen another shot at the Alzheimer’s drug market after the disastrous rollout of its previous drug, Aduhelm.

Last week, a congressional investigation found FDA’s 2021 approval of Aduhelm was “rife with irregularities.” Aduhelm was granted fast track approval despite serious concerns about its effectiveness, and against the advice of FDA’s own outside advisory panel.

The agency did not seek an advisory panel opinion with Leqembi.

Both Aduhelm and Leqembi target clumps of amyloid plaque that build up in the brain. Reducing that plaque is thought to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s.

Leqembi is given as a bi-weekly infusion. The companies have not disclosed the price yet, but earlier estimated it could cost anywhere between $9,249 to $35,605 annually.

As a result of the Aduhelm controversy, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services will only cover amyloid drugs if patients are enrolled in a clinical trial. The agency won’t make a reimbursement decision until later this year.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear chosen to co-chair Appalachian Regional Commission

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear has been chosen to serve as the 2023 states’ co-chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission.

In the role, Beshear will work with federal co-chair Gayle Manchin and other governors to boost economic growth across 423 counties in 13 states, the Appalachian Regional Commission said Wednesday in a media release. In addition to facilitating investments, the states’ co-chair also hosts the commission’s annual conference.

The ARC said it invested nearly $240 million in the region last year, which attracted nearly $1.6 billion in private investments. The projects funded will create or retain more than 22,000 jobs and provide training for new opportunities in emerging sectors.

WV HAS FOUR PROJECTS BEING FUNDED BY THE APPALACHIAN REGIONAL COMMISSION

“I am honored to have been chosen by governors of both parties to co-chair the Appalachian Regional Commission,” Beshear said. “ARC investments are building better lives for current and future generations here in Kentucky and across the ARC region.”

Manchin, the wife of West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, said she welcomes Beshear and looks forward to collaborating with him and other governors “as we advance ARC’s mission to bring economic parity and transformational opportunities to the region’s 26 million people.”

What McCarthy has offered his GOP opponents, and what’s under discussion

Just In | The Hill

Here are the tentative agreements and offers that Kevin McCarthy has made, and others under discussion, as he aims to woo the 20 Republicans voting against him for Speaker.

Thirteen of those 20 Republicans backed McCarthy in Friday’s vote, edging him closer to a Speakership.

Several said their votes were pending negotiations.

What McCarthy has offered

Motion to vacate: McCarthy has offered to lower the threshold to bring up a move to force a vote on ousting the House Speaker down to just one member, a change from a threshold of five members that was revealed in a House Rules package over New Year’s weekend.

That was also lowered from a threshold of half of the House GOP conference that was agreed to in November.

Floor vote to establish term limits for all House lawmakers: Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), who has introduced a term limits bill, said McCarthy made that commitment.

Floor vote on a border security bill: In a House GOP conference call on Friday, Rep. Garret Graves (R-La.) said there will be movement on legislation encompassing a border security plan crafted by Texas Republicans, according to a source.

Commitment to move bills through regular order: McCarthy has pledged to bring up 12 regular appropriations bills individually and also made commitments on an open amendment process.

Create Subcommittee on “Weaponization of the Federal Government”: Housed under the House Judiciary Committee, the panel is a response to a request from GOP members who have withheld support for McCarthy to form a “Church-style” committee to investigate alleged government abuses, in reference to a 1975 Senate select committee named for former Sen. Frank Church (D-Idaho) that investigated intelligence agencies.

Require 72 hours from release of final bill text before a vote on the House floor.

Bring back the Holman rule: A recently released House rules package brings back the Holman rule, which allows members to propose amendments to appropriations bills that cut the salaries of specific federal workers or funding for specific programs down to $1, effectively defunding them.

Some Republicans have suggested using the rule to defund certain investigations and officials in the FBI and Department of Justice or the Department of Homeland Security or officials who were involved in COVID-19 policies.

What McCarthy has discussed

Committee membership still under discussion: Hard-line conservatives want increased representation on influential committees, but there is no agreement or promise on that – and McCarthy does not have the sole power to give it, as is a decision for the House GOP Steering Committee, a group of around 30 members from leadership and elected regional representatives.

What McCarthy has not offered

On a House GOP conference call on Friday, Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-N.C.) shut down rumors that Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) had been promised chair of the powerful House Rules Committee.
