Former PSG footballer and Olympic champion Modeste M'Bami dies aged 40 after a heart attack

CNN
 —

Former Paris-Saint-Germain and Cameroon midfielder Modeste M’Bami has died aged 40 after suffering a heart attack, PSG said in a statement on Saturday.

M’Bami won two Coupes de France with the Parisian club, in 2004 and 2006, as well as an Olympic gold medal with Cameroon at the 2000 Sydney Games.

At those Olympics, M’Bami secured his place within Cameroonian footballing history as he scored a “golden goal” in extra time to seal the Indomitable Lions’ victory over Ronaldinho’s Brazil in the quarterfinals.

After beginning his career at Académie Kadji Sport, followed by Dynamo Douala in Cameroon, M’Bami joined PSG in 2003 where he stayed for three seasons.

He then spent three seasons at French side Olympique de Marseille, which was among those paying tribute to the Cameroonian, expressing its “great sadness.”

Tributes flooded in from all corners of the footballing world, including from former teammates and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

“Such sad news,” Infantino said in an Instagram story underneath a black and white photo of M’bami. “RIP Modeste M’bami.”

M'Bami spent three seasons at Paris-Saint-Germain.

His Cameroonian teammate George Elokobi said on Twitter, “Devastating news. RIP my friend Modeste Mbami, gone too soon. Thank you for your warm welcome and a good roommate.”

“My sincerest condolences and prayers go out to your family and friends. Thank you for all your contributions to the Cameroon National Team.”

As well as his time at French clubs, M’Bami spent time playing at clubs in Spain, China, Saudi Arabia and Colombia before he returned to France to end his playing career at Le Havre in Ligue 2.

After retiring at the age of 35, he went back to Cameroon and organized recruitment days for footballers in Africa.

“We are deeply saddened to hear the passing of the former Cameroonian footballer Modeste M’bami,” the Confederation of African Football said on Twitter.

“All our condolences and thoughts go to his family and friends at this difficult time. May he Rest In Peace.”

A 7-year-old girl died after dog attack in Louisiana, dog owner faces charges

CNN
 —

A man was arrested and is facing negligent homicide charges after failing to restrain his pit bull terrier, which attacked and killed a 7-year-old girl in Louisiana on Friday, authorities said.

Erick Lopez, 20, of East Baton Rouge told deputies his dog would often roam unrestrained through the neighboring property where the child was attacked, according to the arrest report obtained by CNN.

On January 6, the dog wandered into the neighbor’s property where Sadie Davila was playing in the yard, the report read.

The dog “viciously attacked” Sadie and continued to maul her despite a relative’s attempts to stop the attack by hitting the dog with a walking cane, according to the report.

Sadie, who was in the first grade, was transported to a hospital where staff said the child “sustained numerous dog bites to her face and substantial damage to her skull, ultimately resulting in her death,” the report said.

Sadie Davlia and Haley Anselmo

Sadie’s mother, Haley Anselmo, told CNN “nothing will be the same” after her daughter’s death.

“She was the light in all our lives,” Anselmo said. “She thought more about others needs before her own. She had a big imagination and so much spunk. She wanted everyone to be happy. She was my mini me.”

Animal control officials captured the dog, which they found with blood around its face and mouth. It is unclear what will happen to the dog.

Lopez admitted to not being present during the attack, according to the report. He was arrested and booked into the Baton Rouge Parish Prison.

“This is an awful, heartbreaking tragedy,” East Baton Rouge Sheriff Sid Gautreaux said in a statement on Facebook. “My heart goes out to this family, and they will remain in my prayers.”

TikTok, Meta sued by Seattle school district for allegedly wreaking mental health crisis among students

A Seattle public school district sued social media giants, including TikTok, Snap, Meta and YouTube, for allegedly wreaking a mental health crisis among its student body Friday.

The lawsuit said that the companies’ algorithms were recommending pro-eating disorder content.

The district was seeking punitive damages and for the tech companies to stop causing a public nuisance. Though the tech giants are not liable for what is published by its users, the lawsuit takes aim at the recommendations and the content promoted through the algorithm.

“Plaintiff is not alleging Defendants are liable for what third-parties have said on Defendants’ platforms but, rather, for Defendants’ own conduct,” the lawsuit said. “Defendants affirmatively recommend and promote harmful content to youth, such as pro-anorexia and eating disorder content.”

LAWMAKERS RAMP UP WARNINGS ABOUT TIKTOK, CALL FOR NATIONAL BAN: ‘THIS IS DIGITAL FENTANYL’

TikTok has been flagged for its potential national security concerns. In December, the House ordered the immediate removal of social networking app TikTok from its devices, according to an email obtained by Fox News.

In the email, House Chief Administrative Office Catherine L. Szpindor wrote to staff members and lawmakers informing them that TikTok is banned “from all House managed devices.” The email says the policy goes into effect “beginning immediately.”

A hiker was found dead on Texas' Guadalupe Peak

CNN
 —

A hiker was found dead on New Year’s Eve in Texas’ Guadalupe Mountains National Park, according to the park service.

Other hikers discovered the unresponsive person on the Guadalupe Peak Trail and notified park staff after trying to revive them, the park said in a Friday release.

There were wind gusts of more than 50 miles per hour and wind chills were “well below freezing” that day, according to the release.

“At nearly 9,000 feet above sea level, Guadalupe Peak is a mountain environment with associated risks not found elsewhere in Texas,” the park said, noting that the hike is a “very strenuous, 8.4 mile round trip hike with a 3,000 foot elevation gain” to the highest point in the state.

The park did not release the person’s identity or other details related to the death.

“Guadalupe Mountains National Park staff are saddened by this loss, and our entire park community extends sincere condolences to the hiker’s family and friends,” Superintendent Eric Leonard said in the release.

Guadalupe Mountains National Park, one of the least-visited of US national parks, has the four highest peaks in Texas.

Hikers should stick together when hiking in a group, the park said, and postpone hikes when the weather is bad.

“You should prioritize your own safety above all else in windy conditions,” the release said.

Panthers' Eddy Pineiro nails 42-yard game-winner to end Carolina's season on high note

If Steve Wilks has coached his last game for the Panthers, he can walk away knowing his players didn’t quit on him.

Eddy Pineiro kicked a 42-yard field goal as time expired, and Carolina closed out its season with an opportunistic 10-7 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

“The guys showed up today,” said Wilks, who went 6-6 as an interim coach after Matt Rhule’s firing. “We’ve dealt with so much adversity through the course of the year, and for those guys to circle the wagons once again and find a way to come together and win the football game is extremely impressive.”

The Saints finished with some wide statistical advantages, outgaining Carolina 304 yards to 203, but the game remained tight until the end because of New Orleans’ inability to score on four possessions inside the Panthers 40-yard line.

“We should have beat the brakes off somebody and didn’t,” Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan said after New Orleans saw its three-game winning streak snapped. “Not to finish the way we wanted is going to be irksome for a while.”

The Saints (7-10) were in position to win when safety Daniel Sorensen intercepted Sam Darnold near midfield and returned it to the Carolina 35 with 1:36 to go. But New Orleans failed to move the ball on three plays and Wil Lutz missed a 55-yard field goal attempt — his second miss of the game.

Darnold moved Carolina (7-10) into field goal range in the closing minute with a first-down scramble, followed by just his fifth completion of the game — a 21 yarder to former LSU receiver Terrace Marshall Jr.

Darnold finished 5 of 15 for 43 yards and was intercepted twice, winning despite having a quarterback rating of 2.8. But the Panthers rushed for 171 yards, led by Chuba Hubbard’s 69 yards on 21 carries.

“It wasn’t pretty, but we got it done at the end and that’s what matters,” Darnold said. “I’m just really proud of our resiliency.”

BEARS SECURE NO. 1 PICK AFTER LATE-GAME HEROICS FROM TEXANS

Carolina scored its only TD on a fumble by Darnold that was recovered in the end zone by Panthers lineman Michael Jordan.

New Orleans’ Andy Dalton was 15 of 25 for 171 yards and one touchdown to Chris Olave. Alvin Kamara rushed for 107 yards.

The Saints took a 7-0 lead on Olave’s 25-yard TD catch on the game’s opening drive, but New Orleans squandered three subsequent scoring chances in the opening half.

“The way we started this game, it’s exactly how you want to start,” Dalton said. “We had opportunities at other points in the game, too, and didn’t take advantage of them, didn’t make the play when we needed to. … The score should have looked a lot different.”

Lutz missed a 44-yard field goal attempt. Kamara’s run was stuffed on fourth and 1. And after Saints safety Tyrann Mathieu intercepted Darnold near the goal line, New Orleans turned it back over when Olave fumbled inside the Carolina 25-yard line.

The Panthers, who’d been outgained 234 yards to 60 in the first half, opened the second half with a 14-play, 82-yard drive to tie it at 7 on Jordan’s recovery.

Under first-year coach Dennis Allen, the Saints ended a season with a 10 in the loss column for the first time since 2005 — the year before his predecessor, Sean Payton, was hired. (The Saints did have five 7-9 seasons between 2007 and 2016.)

“We’re going to evaluate everything,” Allen said. “Nobody’s making any decisions on anything 30 minutes after we walked off the field.”

EJECTED

Panthers running back D’Onta Foreman and Saints defensive end Marcus Davenport each were ejected in the third quarter for throwing punches after the whistle, moments after Davenport had tackled Foreman for no gain. Foreman had 12 carries for 67 yards. Davenport was in on three tackles.

INJURIES

Panthers: Marquis Haynes appeared to hurt his ankle in the first half. Left tackle Brady Christensen was taken to the locker room on a cart in the first half.

Saints: Rookie offensive tackle Trevor Penning, getting his first career start, limped off with an apparent leg injury with 1:33 to go.

UP NEXT

Panthers: Begin the offseason with uncertainty over who’ll be the coach in 2023 and a decision to make about whether to stick with Darnold at QB.

Saints: Head into Allen’s first full offseason with six offensive and defensive starters, as well as several regulars on all three units, entering free agency. The club’s future at QB also is uncertain.

Senator says Russia-Ukraine conflict 'essentially trench warfare'

Sen. Angus King (I-Maine) on Sunday called the type of fighting happening in east Ukraine “essentially trench warfare” just days after he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv.

King, who is a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the Armed Services Committee, told CBS “Face the Nation” moderator Margaret Brennan that $3 billion being released by the Biden administration to help Ukraine will assist in its efforts to stave off a Russian offensive.

“I mean, they’re just being pummeled. That’s too mild a word in terms of their energy infrastructure. So air defenses part of it, Patriot missiles. But also what’s going on in the east is essentially trench warfare. It’s almost World War One. It’s horrible,” King said.

King, joined by Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.), was in Ukraine on Friday both to show solidarity with Ukrainians and also to exercise “accountability” of U.S. funding in the country.

The Biden administration announced on Friday a $3.75 billion military assistance package to send new equipment to Ukraine, including artillery systems, armored personnel carriers, surface to air missiles and ammunition.

King said such vehicles will help Ukrainians have a “fighting chance” to win the war.

“And to put it in perspective for Americans, it’s as if our East Coast, from Maine to Florida and then west to Houston, Texas, was being occupied by a foreign power,” King said.

“The entire eastern edge of Ukraine is occupied,” King added. “And that’s where this fight is going to be. And that’s why these maneuver vehicles are going to be so important.”

This new package for Ukraine is the 29th installment of U.S. arms and equipment for the country since August 2021. Other allies, like France and Germany have also announced that they will send armored vehicles to Ukraine in support of its war efforts.

These 10 Cars And Brands Have Big Birthdays in 2023

Are you celebrating a major birthday in 2023? Some of the world’s best loved cars and brands are, including Honda, Lamborghini, Corvette and the Porsche 911.

A couple of the cars we’ve featured went out of production long ago, but most of the names are still alive and kicking even after 60 or 70 years in the limelight, which is some achievement. How many do you think will last another decade?

1. Chevrolet Corvette – 70 years

These 10 Cars And Brands Have Big Birthdays in 2023

Let’s kick things off with a big one, the Chevrolet Corvette’s 70th anniversary. It’s fair to say that the Vette didn’t get off to the best start. GM came close to axing the whole project in the early years, yet in 2023 the now mid-engined Corvette is in arguably its best shape ever (if not actually the best-shaped Corvette ever). Demand for the base car is still massive, the Z06 is a real supercar killer, and there’s so much more to come, including hybrids, an EV, and allegedly a crossover.

2. Porsche 911 – 60 years

These 10 Cars And Brands Have Big Birthdays in 2023

Related: Do You Know How The Iconic Porsche 911 Got Its Name?

advertisement scroll to continue

The Porsche 911 didn’t officially go on sale until 1965, but the car made its global debut in the fall of 1963 as the 901. The name might have changed at Peugeot’s insistence, but even 60 years later the silhouette is almost exactly the same. And of course the engine is still slung out beyond the rear axle, though today’s 380 hp (385 PS) entry-level Carrera makes almost three times as much grunt as the 128 hp (130 PS) 2.0-liter original.

3. Honda – 60 years

These 10 Cars And Brands Have Big Birthdays in 2023

Honda was founded in 1946, but it didn’t make its first automobile until 1963. And that was just a tiny T360 pickup truck built to meet Japanese kei microcar regulations – not exactly a harbinger of world domination. Yet by 1990 Honda’s Accord would be the best selling car in America and in 2021 the CR-V was the third-best selling car globally, racking up almost 900,000 sales.

4. Lamborghini – 60 years

These 10 Cars And Brands Have Big Birthdays in 2023

You could reasonably argue that Lamborghini as we know it wasn’t born until the fully dressed mid-engined Miura chassis was first shown to the world at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show, but the company itself dates back to 1963 and the front-engined 350 GTV prototype. The GTV didn’t make it to production, but the engine – a 3.5-liter V12 with two overhead cams per bank to Ferrari’s one – did, and Lamborghini has been a thorn in Maranello’s side ever since.

5. Caterham – 50 years

These 10 Cars And Brands Have Big Birthdays in 2023

The Seven sports car celebrated its 60th birthday in 2017 but this year marks its half century as the Caterham Seven. Colin Chapman sold the rights to Caterham in 1973 when he wanted to take Lotus upmarket, and even he’d be astonished to see how relevant and desired it remains today thanks to Caterham’s nurturing and the rightness of the original design.

6. Chrysler Minivans – 40 years

These 10 Cars And Brands Have Big Birthdays in 2023

In today’s SUV-obsessed age it’s easy to forget what a massive deal minivans used to be – particularly the Chryslers that helped kick-start the craze. The Voyager was Plymouth’s version of the groundbreaking Chrysler S-series minivan that launched in late 1983, and while the Plymouth name died over 20 years ago, the Voyager badge and Chrysler’s minivan is still going strong. Today, the Chrysler-branded minivan goes by the Pacifica name, but fleet customers get a basic version sold as a Voyager.

7. Aston Martin DB5 – 60 years

These 10 Cars And Brands Have Big Birthdays in 2023

The DB5 was only in production for a couple of years after its 1963 launch, and actually wasn’t much different from the DB4 Series V, the main upgrade being a straight-six enlarged from 3.7 to 4.0-liters. But it’s become such an icon thanks to its association with the James Bond franchise that you just know Aston will be planning some of its own 60th anniversary celebrations this year.

8. Cadillac Escalade – 25 years

These 10 Cars And Brands Have Big Birthdays in 2023

Cadillac only got around to giving the Escalade the high performance V treatment last year, but the basic Escalade hits its quarter century in 2023. Needing a luxury rival to the new Lincoln Navigator, GM put lipstick on a GMC Yukon Denali, and 25 years later the current truck still shares its body-on-frame DNA with the Yukon and Chevy’s Tahoe/Suburban. And all of those vehicles are based on the same GMT1XX platform found under the Chevy Silverado, which also turns 25 this year.

9. Audi TT – 25 years

These 10 Cars And Brands Have Big Birthdays in 2023

The TT better make the most of this birthday because it’ll be its last. Audi is replacing its stylish coupe and convertible sports cars with an EV, though that new “emotive model” will at least be in the same price range, the company assures us. But we’ll be amazed if the new car looks as fresh as the original TT does at 25 years old.

10. Ford Mustang II – 50 years

These 10 Cars And Brands Have Big Birthdays in 2023

The Mustang everybody loves to hate was introduced in the fall of 1973, only two months before the first oil crisis. Little wonder then that sales of the drastically downsized pony car almost trebled to 386,000 despite the car’s distinct lack of performance – you couldn’t order it with a V8 that first year, and even the 5.0-liter ’78 King Cobra pictured couldn’t muster more than 139 hp (141 PS).
