Aaron Rodgers suffers game-ending ankle injury four plays into New York Jets' debut and will reportedly miss rest of 2023 season

CNN
 —

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, making his debut with the New York Jets, was carted off the field after suffering an ankle injury on just his fourth play in the team’s Monday Night Football game against the Buffalo Bills and will now reportedly miss the rest of the 2023 season.

An MRI on Tuesday showed a complete tear of Rodgers’ left Achilles tendon, according to multiple sources.

CNN has reached out to the Jets and Rodgers’ representatives for details. Jets head coach Robert Saleh is expected to address the media in a previously scheduled virtual availability at 3:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

The injury occurred during the team’s first drive in the first quarter when Rodgers was sacked by Bills edge rusher Leonard Floyd.

The four-time Most Valuable Player hobbled up for a few moments before going back down to the ground. He was attended to by the Jets’ medical staff before being helped off the field at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

After being looked at in the blue medical tent on the sidelines, the 39-year-old was taken to the locker room on a cart, and he missed the rest of the game.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh told reporters in the postgame news conference, “(We’re) concerned with his Achilles. MRI’s probably going to confirm what we think is already going to happen with his Achilles, so prayers tonight. But, it’s not good.”

Rodgers’ X-rays “were negative,” the team posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Backup quarterback Zach Wilson entered the game for the injured Rodgers.

“I hurt for Aaron, and how much he’s invested in all of this,” Saleh said. “I’m still going to say a prayer. I’m still going to hold out hope.”

Before being traded in the offseason, Rodgers had spent the first 18 seasons of his NFL career with the Green Bay Packers, where he led the team to a 31-25 victory in Super Bowl XLV in 2011.

Rodgers won MVP awards in 2011, 2014, 2020 and 2021 while setting numerous records for his accuracy and deadliness over the years.

An auto strike looks likely. Should I buy a car now?

CNN
 —

If you’re thinking about buying a new car, you might be warily watching news about a possible United Auto Workers strike. And, yes, experts say, there could be some serious downside for those shopping for certain models of cars, trucks or SUVs, at least in the longer term.

There’s no single answer to what a car shopper should do, though. It depends on the vehicle you’re shopping for and on your own level of flexibility in that choice. First of all, keep in mind that only General Motors, Ford and Stellantis face strikes by the United Auto Workers, So, if you’re thinking of buying a Toyota, Honda or Hyundai, any potential strike should make little difference to you.

And if you’re thinking of buying a Ford, Chevrolet or Jeep — brands that are manufactured by Ford, GM and Stellantis, respectively — but you’re not very particular about the color or specific options, you might still have time to shop around, even if a strike happens.

But the emphasis is on “might.”

Automakers are just recovering from manufacturing disruptions caused by Covid-related parts shortages. New vehicle inventories are leaner than they’ve been before past strikes, said Pat Ryan, CEO of the car shopping site CoPilot, which closely tracks dealership inventories.

There are differences even among these three companies, though. GM has the tightest inventories of the three, while Stellantis — which makes Jeep, Dodge and Ram models, among others — has lots of vehicles on its dealer lots.

“They’ve got so much inventory, this might help them clear out some of that inventory,” Ryan said of Stellantis.

On the other hand, if you’re looking at a GMC, Chevy or Cadillac SUV or truck, there are already wait times for some of those models, he said. Ryan said that’s especially true if you want something very specific.

“The challenge for buying some of those is that, already, you would have to order or wait to get exactly what you wanted,” he said.

If you’re more flexible in your choices, there’s no need to make a panic buy right now, though, said Ivan Drury, an industry analyst with Edmunds.com. There will be a little time before the situation gets dire if the strike runs very long.

“If you’re looking at an American automaker, you’re already seeing that they’re offering low [interest rate financing], they’re offering cash back on some stuff,” he sad. “I would probably just pull the trigger sooner than later so that you don’t get caught in that potential gray zone three to four months from now, when they could start running lean if the factories are shut down.”

Beyond Stellantis, there are still some specific models that are especially plentiful right now, noted Michelle Krebs, an analyst with AutoTrader. The Ford Bronco Sport and Escape, the Chevrolet Equinox and full-size pickups are in good supply, she said in an email.

But, pickups, because of their wide variety of types and options, generally require a larger selection for customers to find just what they want on the lot, Ryan noted.

You might think that models built in Mexico or Canada, where factories don’t employ UAW workers, will never be in short supply just because of a strike in the United States. Unfortunately that’s not the case, because automakers’ factories in North America, which includes Canada and Mexico, are all tied together, Thomas Goldsby, professor of supply chain management at the University of Tennessee wrote in an email.

Factories in the US make components shipped to factories across US borders, he pointed out. So vehicle production at Mexican and Canadian factories could well shut down at some point if a strike drags on.

Some models from these brands are imported from outside North America, though. For instance, the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Trax are built in South Korea, Stellantis’s Dodge Hornet is built in Italy and GM’s Buick Envision is assembled in China.

Auto plants in other continents are unlikely to be affected by these strikes since automakers rarely ship major components between factories on different continents, said Goldsby.

In some ways, you might find this all somewhat similar to car shopping during the era of post-covid vehicle shortages, said Ryan.

“It will more likely be quite specific around certain brands, and particularly certain models, where you really feel and see that,” he said. “Frankly, it might be an interesting time to reconsider the Stellantis brands if you like any of them, because you’re probably going to get a much better deal on those.”

Powerful earthquake strikes Morocco, killing more than 1,000 and damaging historic Marrakech

CNN
 —

More than 1,000 people have been killed after the deadliest earthquake in decades struck central Morocco, with rescuers digging through rubble in remote mountainous areas to find victims.

The 6.8-magnitude earthquake shook Morocco’s High Atlas mountain range shortly after 11 p.m. local time on Friday at the relatively shallow depth of 18.5 kilometers (11.4 miles), the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said, with the epicenter located about 72 kilometers (44.7 miles) southwest of Marrakech, a city of some 840,000 people and a popular tourist destination.

At least 1,037 people were killed with more than 700 others in a critical condition, Morocco’s state TV Al Aoula said, citing the interior ministry.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of destruction in the Atlas Mountains foothills following the earthquake.

Fatima, 50, told CNN her house in the mountain village of Asni – near the earthquake’s epicenter – had been destroyed. “I barely got the chance to grab the kids and run out before I saw my house collapsing in front of my eyes. The neighbor’s house has also collapsed and there are two dead people under the rubble,” she said.

Mohammed, 50, from the nearby town of Ouirgane, lost four family members in the quake. “I managed to get out safely with my two children but lost the rest. My house is gone,” he said.

Rescue operations there are ongoing. “We are out in the streets with authorities as they try to pull the dead from the rubble. Many many people were transported to hospital in front of me. We are hoping for miracles from the rubble,” he said.

Not since 2004 has the country seen a comparable disaster, when a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck the port city of Al Hoceima, claiming around 630 lives. Morocco’s worst earthquake of modern times was in 1960 near the western city of Agadir which killed at least 12,000 people.

Many Moroccans spent Friday night on the streets fearful of aftershocks. Health authorities also called on people to donate blood to help victims.

Most deaths occurred in mountain areas close to the epicenter that were hard to reach, authorities said, and rescue teams were having difficulty accessing the worst affected areas after roads were damaged, Al Aoula reported.

The Royal Moroccan Armed Forces warned residents to pay close attention to follow-up tremors.

“We remind you of the need to exercise caution and take safety measures due to the risk of aftershocks,” the military wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The USGS said Friday night’s quake was unusually strong for that part of Morocco.

“Earthquakes of this size in the region are uncommon, but not unexpected. Since 1900, there have been no earthquakes M6 (magnitude 6) and larger within 500 km of this earthquake, and only 9 M5 (magnitude 5) and larger earthquakes,” USGS said.

The US body predicted that “significant damage is likely and the disaster is potentially widespread,” noting that many people in the area reside in structures that are “highly vulnerable to earthquake shaking.”

Al Aoula on Saturday broadcast video of multiple collapsed buildings near the quake’s epicenter and reported that thousands of people had fled their homes after the country’s National Institute of Geophysics warned of aftershocks.

A damaged vehicle is pictured in the historic city of Marrakech on Saturday.
A woman stands among the rubble of a building in the earthquake-damaged old city of Marrakech.

In the old city of Marrakech, a UNESCO World Heritage site, some residents were injured as buildings and city walls were damaged and partially collapsed, according to CNN researcher Benjamin Brown who is on the ground.

Brown, who was at the rooftop of his hotel when the ground started shaking, said it took a few seconds for everyone to realize what was going on.

People initially remained calm as they made their way out of the narrow alleyways to find a safe place outdoors, many in their pajamas, according to Brown.

“It kicked in a couple of minutes later, screaming began… when the extent of the injuries became apparent, that’s really when the panic kicked in,” he said.

“I saw many people brought out of their homes in stretchers or wrapped in carpets…some of them with what appeared to be quite serious head injuries with lots of blood.”

At least one ambulance had to turn away an injured woman because it was already full with injured people, Brown said.

Some parts of the historic red walls that surround Marrakesh’s old city center – which were first laid out in the early 12th century – also crumbled, he added.

Residents of Marrakech stay out at a square after the earthquake struck the region on Friday night.

Videos and photos show open spaces in the city, including squares and traffic roundabouts, filled with people, some setting up makeshift beds to stay the night.

Some houses in the city have collapsed and people were moving debris by hand while they waited for heavy equipment, local resident Id Waaziz Hassan told Reuters news agency.

“The chandelier fell from the ceiling and I ran out. I’m still in the road with my children and we’re scared,” Houda Hafsi, another Marrakech resident, told Reuters.

A former imperial city with a history that dates back nearly 1,000 years, Marrakech is tightly packed with medieval-era palaces, mosques, gardens and bustling markets. Its historic quarters are surrounded by red earth walls and filled with buildings constructed in red sandstone, which gave the city its nickname the “red city.”

Marrakech drew nearly three million tourists in 2019, before the Covid pandemic.

In addition to its rich culture and history, Marrakech is also Morocco’s fourth largest city and a major economic center.

Shaking was also felt in the capital Rabat, some 350 km (217 miles) north of the High Atlas mountains, Reuters said, citing eyewitnesses.

Offers of help and messages of condolence have been pouting in from across the international community.

Algeria, which severed diplomatic relations with Morocco in 2021, pledged to open its airspace for humanitarian aid and medical flights going to and from Morocco, Algerian state news agency APS reported, citing a statement from the country’s president.

US President Joe Biden said he is “deeply saddened” following the disaster, while Turkish President Recep Erdogan of Turkey, whose country experienced its own horrific earthquake earlier this year, said: “I convey my best wishes to all Moroccan people affected by the earthquake disaster in friendly and brotherly Morocco.”

Spanish prosecutor files 'sexual assault and coercion' complaint against Luis Rubiales over unwanted kiss on Spain star

CNN
 —

The Spanish national prosecutor has filed a complaint against the suspended president of Spain’s soccer federation, Luis Rubiales, “for the crimes of sexual assault and coercion against Jennifer Hermoso,” according to a press release.

On Tuesday, La Roja star Hermoso filed an official complaint with prosecutors against Rubiales over an unwanted kiss after the Women’s World Cup final, leading to this new development.

The complaint from the prosecutor’s office – part of the Spanish legal process – paves the way for Spain’s national court to launch a formal investigation into Rubiales, who has refused to quit as president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), and begin gathering evidence, which could lead to possible charges.

“The complaint is filed after, on September 5, the player appeared before the prosecutor, accompanied by her lawyer, and expressly made a complaint of the events that, according to her statement, occurred without her consent,” the press release by the prosecutor’s office added.

According to the press release from the prosecutor’s office, Hermoso “also referred in her statement that both she and people close to her suffered constant and repeated pressure from Luis Rubiales and his professional environment.

“The prosecutor considers that this harassment could constitute a crime of coercion.”

The statement added that it would request information from Australian authorities “on the classification of crimes against sexual freedom in its criminal regulations.”

CNN has contacted RFEF to find out if Luis Rubiales has any legal defense, but the federation has indicated that it lacks any details in this regard as the soccer boss – who has been suspended from all football-related activities for 90 days by world governing body FIFA – cannot use RFEF legal resources.

The unwanted kiss has prompted a major shake-up in Spanish soccer, with the government pushing for Rubiales to resign and RFEF removing World Cup-winning manager Jorge Vilda from his role. He was replaced by Montse Tomé, the first woman in Spanish national team history to hold the position.

Rubiales has apologized and described the kiss on August 20 as “mutual” – a claim Hermoso denied, saying she was not respected.

More than 80 Spanish soccer players then put their name on a statement supporting Hermoso, saying they would not return to the national team “if the current leaders continue” in their posts.

Public outcry to the unwanted kiss has come from every sphere of Spanish society, including from politicians and sports stars.

Spain basketball great Pau Gasol, a two-time NBA champion with the Los Angeles Lakers, told a press conference at the FIBA World Cup on Friday that it was “very disappointing” to see Rubiales’ behavior and said it should not be “tolerated or accepted.”

“Me being a Spanish citizen and seeing my country win for the first time ever the World Cup in women’s soccer, it was a little bit disappointing, well, very disappointing actually, to see that happen, to see that moment happen and that type of behavior,” Gasol said.

“To take away from a moment of joy and happiness, and those amazing women did an amazing job winning the World Cup, it was difficult. It was very challenging for me and for our country in a way to experience that, and now we’re still dealing with it.

“As a president of a federation, you should know better, but it happened so now you’ve gotta deal with it and make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

At least 14 killed as fierce storms and severe flooding lash southern Europe

CNN
 —

At least 14 people have died and several remain missing across Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria as torrential rain and severe flooding batter southern Europe.

Flooding has claimed at least three lives in mainland Greece, seven in Turkey and left at least four people dead on Bulgaria’s Black Sea coastline.

Greece, which has seen particularly intense rainfall, is braced for more flooding as the storm continues on Thursday.

A level 2 of 3 warning for severe storms was issued Wednesday for parts of Greece, with threats including torrential rainfall and potentially tornadoes.

The storm, which has officially been named Daniel by the national meteorological services in southeast Europe, has lashed the country with several months’ worth of rain, flooding homes, businesses and roads.

It has claimed at least three lives in Greece. The latest victim was a man in his 80s who was swept away by the flooding near the town of Karditsa, in central Greece.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Greek Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias called the storm an “unprecedented phenomenon.”

He said that four people remain missing in central Greece, the part of the country that has been hit the hardest by the storm.

People and dogs are rescued by firefighters from floods in the city of Larissa, Greece, September 6, 2023.

Kikilias noted that the port city of Volos, located around 330 kilometers (190 miles) north of Athens, is still dealing with heavy rains and the aftermath of the flooding, which damaged buildings and cars and caused the collapse of roads and bridges. The port of Volos was non-operational on Wednesday as much of the city remained without electricity.

Residents of a nursing home in the city had to relocate after a part of the building collapsed due to the rains, Greek public broadcaster ERT said on Wednesday.

During a televised briefing Wednesday, meteorologist Dimitris Ziakopoulos, who works for the Greek government’s civil protection department, said the rainfall “is a huge number for Greek records and for most regions in Europe.” Greek meteorologists have said the rainfall exceeds the amount normally seen in an entire year.

According to observations by Greece’s meteorological service, 600 to 800 millimeters of rain fell in the area around Mount Pelion, near Volos, within 24 hours.

Roads have collapsed in the area and dozens of residents trapped in the floods in Pelion were evacuated by the Greek fire service.

Traffic has been banned in the towns of Trikala, Farsala and Karditsa in central Greece, according to police.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said the country was facing a “totally extreme weather phenomenon,” as he urged the public to follow instructions from authorities.

Flooding in Arnavutköy, Başakşehir and Küçükçekmece in Istanbul province, Turkey, on September 6, 2023.

In Turkey, at least five people have been killed in flash floods caused by torrential rain in Kırklareli, in the north-western part of the country, according to state news agency Anadolu. Two of the bodies were found on Tuesday and three on Wednesday.

Another two people died in the Istanbul districts of Başakşehir and Küçükçekmece on Tuesday, according to the Turkish Ministry of Interior Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD).

Severe flooding has also struck Bulgaria’s Black Sea coastline. Four deaths have been confirmed in the municipality of Tsarevo in southern Bulgaria, one of the country’s worst affected areas, according to national broadcaster BNT.

Weather conditions along the southern Black Sea coast have improved, and electricity and water have been turned back on, according to BNT. However, water can only be used for domestic purposes and not for drinking, according to BNT.

Many of the roads and bridges in the area have been damaged and repairs are underway, BNT reported.

“What is expected in the coming days is to evaluate the most urgent repairs that need to be done,” Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov said Wednesday, according BNT.

The severe rain is the result of a very strong low-pressure system. The center of the storm has slowed to a crawl west of Greece in the Mediterranean and is expected to bring heavy rounds of rainfall across the region for the next day or so.

The storm appears to be forming into a tropical-like cyclone known as a “medicane”. These systems can bring dangerous conditions to the Mediterranean Sea and coastal countries, similar to tropical storms and hurricanes in the Atlantic or typhoons in the Pacific.

The flooding tops off a summer in Europe characterized by extreme weather, from heat waves to devastating wildfires. Scientists are clear that as the human-caused climate crisis accelerates, this kind of extreme weather will become more common and more severe.

The daughter of the woman killed by Pennsylvania prison escapee Danelo Cavalcante told police he said he was going 'to do something bad' to their lives

CNN
 —

The prisoner who is now the subject of a massive manhunt after escaping from a Pennsylvania prison last week had killed his ex-girlfriend in a brutal 2021 stabbing in front of her two young children, authorities say.

Danelo Souza Cavalcante, a 34-year-old who was convicted just last month in the killing, escaped from the Chester County Prison some 30 miles west of Philadelphia on Thursday morning, sparking a search involving hundreds of officers.

Investigators believe he escaped the facility by climbing onto the roof and fleeing from there, a law enforcement source told CNN.

The manhunt’s range expanded Tuesday morning after he was spotted in trail camera footage in Chester County, just south of the perimeter authorities originally believed him to be in. Two school districts canceled classes amid the search.

Cavalcante is a Brazil native who is roughly 5 feet tall with long, curly black hair and brown eyes, authorities have said. He is extremely dangerous and desperate not to get caught, officials have warned, and they’ve urged residents in areas near the prison to keep their doors locked, stay inside, check on each other and check their security cameras.

Cavalcante also is wanted in a 2017 homicide case in Brazil, according to the US Marshals Service.

Authorities are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

Here’s what we know about him.

This photo, provided by the Chester County Prison, shows Danelo Cavalcante.

Prosecutors say Deborah Brandão, Cavalcante’s ex-girlfriend, was outside her home with her two children on April 18, 2021.

Cavalcante arrived, grabbed her by her hair, “threw her to the ground, and stabbed her 38 times in virtually every vital organ … causing her to bleed to death,” the Chester County district attorney’s office said in a Facebook post.

Deborah Brandão is seen here in an undated picture.

Brandão’s 7- and 4-year-old children ran to neighbors asking for help and Cavalcante fled, the district attorney’s office said.

The 7-year-old girl told police that when Cavalcante began stabbing Brandão, he said he was going to kill her, court records show.

He was arrested several hours later in Virginia, prosecutors said. Authorities believe he was attempting to flee to Mexico with the intention of heading later to Brazil, District Attorney Deb Ryan has said.

Schuylkill Township police were dispatched to the home at roughly 4:17 p.m. on the day of the killing, and found Brandão on the ground “with multiple stab wounds to the chest,” the district attorney’s office said.

A neighbor attempted lifesaving procedures on Brandão while they waited for emergency medical services to arrive, but she was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after.

She was 33.

After the stabbing, Brandão’s 7-year-old daughter told police Cavalcante showed up at their house and “said he was going to do something bad to their lives and pulled two knives out from a black bag that was behind his back,” according to a probable cause affidavit.

The daughter said she was screaming and Cavalcante threw a rock at her, hitting her leg, police wrote in the affidavit.

After running to the neighbor for help, the girl looked outside and saw Cavalcante leave in a black car, the documents said.

Brandão had filed a protection from abuse order against Cavalcante in December 2020, according to the probable cause affidavit. The order alleges he had a history of assaulting Brandão and previously pulled a knife on her.

“This was a senseless tragedy that has impacted countless people due to the defendant’s cold, calculated, and heinous actions,” Ryan, who led Cavalcante’s prosecution, said last month.

“Ms. Brandão’s children are now left motherless and she will never have the opportunity to watch her children grow up, finish school, or have families of their own,” the district attorney said.

Brandão’s daughter testified in the case and “helped obtain justice for her mother,” the district attorney said. The girl also identified Cavalcante in a photograph shortly after the killing and told police, “That’s him, that’s the guy that killed my mom. Please get him and put him in prison,” the affidavit shows.

On August 16, 2023, Cavalcante was convicted of first-degree murder and possessing an instrument of crime in the killing, according to the district attorney’s office. Just days later, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, the office said.

Attorneys for Cavalcante told jurors during the trial that he was provoked and “snapped” when he attacked Brandão, and said he acted in the heat of passion, according to the Chester County newspaper Daily Local.

Officials are searching for 34-year-old Danelo Cavalcante, who broke out of the Chester County Prison at around 8:50AM Thursday, according to the Chester County District Attorney's office.

‘His depravity knows no bounds’: Chester County DA on escaped murderer

While officers continued their search for Cavalcante over the weekend, authorities urged residents in Pocopson Township, which is next to the prison, to stay in their homes.

Danelo Cavalcante is seen in this image from surveillance footage released by Pennsylvania State Police.

“Lock your doors. Lock your cars. He is still considered an extremely dangerous individual,” Ryan, the district attorney, said in a Saturday news conference.

“People need to be on high alert. … He has killed someone. He’s alleged to have killed another person. So people need to take every precaution possible: Lock your doors, keep your eyes on your kids and keep your eyes on your neighbors and your friends,” Ryan had said a day earlier. “Everyone needs to be on high alert.”

Since his escape, there have been “several credible sightings” of him in an area within the township, Pennsylvania State Police Lt. Col. George Bivens said in a Tuesday morning news conference.

Surveillance footage on Monday also captured Cavalcante in Longwood Gardens, a popular tourist attraction just south of the area authorities were searching near the prison, prompting the search area to shift, Bivens said.

The escapee also appeared to have obtained some items, including a backpack, a “duffel-sling type pack” and a hooded sweatshirt, Bivens said.

Bivens added that residents in the area should be alert, use caution and be aware of their surroundings.

“We’re asking them to lock their vehicles, if they don’t ordinarily do that,” he added. “And pay attention to what’s going on, pay attention to your neighbors, anything that’s unusual there. … But really, it’s vigilance that we’re looking for from people right now.”

“He’s clearly in escape mode, but he’s desperate,” Bivens said. “His history is that he’s a dangerous individual. … If we identify that he’s in a very specific area, my recommendation then would be, ‘Stay in your homes.’”

Zimbabwe's President Mnangagwa sworn in after disputed polls

CNN
 —

Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa was sworn in for a second five-year term Monday, a week after securing an absolute majority in a disputed presidential vote.

The 80-year-old Mnangagwa took the reins of power for another term in a colorful ceremony attended by thousands of Zimbabweans and regional leaders including the presidents of South Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mozambique.

Mnangagwa was reelected after winning more than 2 million votes – 52.6% of the total ballots – to defeat his main challenger, Nelson Chamisa of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party, who received 44% of the votes, according to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission.

Chamisa’s party rejected the results, alleging electoral fraud, and called for fresh elections. The hotly contested poll was also criticized by observers, who said the election process fell short of many regional and international standards.

In a preliminary report, the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU EOM) said “fundamental freedoms were increasingly curtailed” during the elections, and that “acts of violence and intimidation” resulting in a “climate of fear” were also witnessed during the polls.

A total of 41 election monitors were arrested by Zimbabwe’s police, ahead of the final tally of the votes, for allegedly coordinating the release of results.

The arrests had followed the release of a report by the Zimbabwe NGO Forum that documented irregularities on polling day, according to Amnesty International.

The opposition CCC party told CNN on Monday it will not challenge Mnangagwa’s victory at the courts, because it is unsure of getting justice through the country’s legal system.

“Our courts are compromised … it’s pointless to seek remedy in a lopsided court,” said CCC spokesperson Promise Mkwananzi.

Mnangagwa took the reins of power for another term in a colorful ceremony attended by thousands of Zimbabweans and regional leaders.
Mnangagwa's supporters cheer before his inauguration in Harare.

“We are challenging the results politically and diplomatically,” Mkwananzi added. “We are calling for a fresh, free and fair election … We’ll be applying pressure at the diplomatic level and also locally in the country, in which we are saying the citizens must insist that their votes must be respected, and their votes must count.”

The August 23 vote was the second election in Zimbabwe since authoritarian leader Robert Mugabe was deposed by the military in 2017.

Mnangagwa, nicknamed “The Crocodile,” succeeded Mugabe after helping to orchestrate the coup that ousted him.

Five deaths in Virginia connected to statewide meningococcal disease outbreak

CNN
 —

Five people have died from complications of a “rare but serious illness” in Virginia following a statewide outbreak of meningococcal disease, the Virginia Department of Health announced.

Twenty-seven cases of the disease, caused by the bacteria Neisseria meningitidis type Y, have been reported in eastern, central, and southwest Virginia since June 2022, according to the department.

Most case-patients are Black or African American adults between 30 to 60 years of age, according to the Virginia Health Department. Only one person was vaccinated for Neisseria meningitidis type Y out of the 27 reported cases.

“This development is three times the expected number of cases during this time period,” the department said in a news release Wednesday.

The strain associated with this outbreak is known to be circulating more widely in the United States, according to the Virginia Health Department.

Most of the cases are in residents of eastern Virginia, where a regional outbreak was first announced in September 2022, according to the release. There were three deaths and 12 cases reported in the most recent alert from the department in March 2023, prior to Wednesday’s notice.

What is meningococcal disease and how does it spread?

Meningococcal disease refers to any sickness caused by Neisseria meningitidis, CNN previously reported. The infection can lead to both meningitis and a serious infection of the bloodstream called septicemia, or blood poisoning.

The bacteria can spread from person to person through the exchange of respiratory and throat secretions, and typically occurs via kissing, coughing, sneezing or living in close contact with others who are infected.

Symptoms can mimic the flu or Covid-19 and include a headache, fever, nausea or vomiting, brain fog, sensitivity to light, sleepiness or trouble waking, a stiff neck and possibly a skin rash.

Health experts say anyone experiencing related symptoms should get treatment quickly.

“Doctors treat bacterial meningitis with a number of antibiotics. It is important to start treatment as soon as possible,” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Meningococcal prevention and safety

The CDC advises keeping up to date on vaccines as a key step in preventing bacterial and viral meningitis.

The Virginia Department of Health also recommends the following measures to prevent the spread while the outbreak continues:

  • Don’t share personal items (e.g., vapes, lipsticks, toothbrushes).
  • Practice good hand hygiene.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Do not delay seeking care if you experience symptoms of meningococcal disease.
  • Ensure adolescents and teenagers receive the meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY) on schedule at 11 or 12 years of age and then a booster dose at 15-16 years of age.
  • Speak to your healthcare provider if you are at increased risk for meningococcal disease to ensure you are up to date on the MenACWY vaccine.

Florida judge rejects state congressional map championed by DeSantis

CNN
 —

A Florida judge on Saturday struck down congressional district lines for northern Florida advocated by Gov. Ron DeSantis, ruling that the Republican governor’s map had improperly diluted Black voting power.

Circuit Judge J. Lee Marsh concluded that the congressional boundaries – which essentially dismantled the seat once held by Al Lawson, a Black Democrat – violated the state’s constitution, which protects minority-access districts.

Marsh’s order blocks the state from using the map in congressional elections and orders the legislature to draw a new one. The DeSantis administration is expected to quickly appeal the case all the way to the Florida Supreme Court.

The eventual outcome in Florida – and other litigation pending in states such as Alabama and Georgia – could play a significant role in which party controls the US House of Representatives after next year’s congressional elections. Republicans currently hold a narrow majority in the chamber.

Voting and civil rights groups that brought the challenge hailed the decision Saturday as a rebuff to an aggressive effort by DeSantis – who is seeking his party’s presidential nomination – to implement a map that heavily favored the GOP. In a rare move last year, DeSantis inserted himself into the redistricting process by vetoing a map drawn by the Republican-led legislature that had preserved existing districts represented by Black Democrats. Instead, he submitted his own map that lawmakers approved in a special session that DeSantis called.

“Voters should be empowered to pick their leaders, not the other way around,” Jasmine Burney-Clark, the founding director of Equal Ground Education Fund, one of the groups that sued, said in a statement. “Today’s ruling reinforces the fact that Gov. DeSantis forced a compliant Legislature to adopt a gerrymandered congressional map that diminished minority representation.”

Aides to DeSantis and Florida Secretary of State Cord Byrd did not immediately respond to requests for comment Saturday.

Under the map used in last year’s midterm elections, a significant number of Black voters from Lawson’s district were moved into communities represented by White Republicans. Lawson ran for the redrawn 2nd District, a Republican-leaning seat anchored in Tallahassee, and lost to GOP Rep. Neal Dunn by 20 points.

Under a recent agreement, plaintiffs in the redistricting battle agreed to narrow the scope of the case to the North Florida district, dropping what had been a broader challenge to Florida’s congressional map. The parties also agreed to pave the way for fast appeals to the state Supreme Court. Most of the judges on Florida’s high court have been appointed by DeSantis, now in his second term.

A separate federal challenge to the state’s congressional map is still pending.

Law enforcement seeks help to identify barns in BTK serial killer cold case investigations

CNN
 —

A law enforcement team in northeast Oklahoma believes the prolific serial killer known as “BTK” may be responsible for several additional unsolved missing person and homicide cases. Now they’re hoping the public can help them identify barns and silos in Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri that the self-proclaimed BTK killer Dennis Rader sketched in never-before-seen detailed drawings.

Last month, the Osage County Sheriff’s Office publicly confirmed it was investigating Rader as the “prime suspect” in a 1976 cold case in their jurisdiction and several other unsolved crimes across three states.

The investigators believe the killer may have buried 16-year-old Cynthia Dawn Kinney in a barn near the Kansas-Oklahoma border. Kinney was last seen at a laundromat in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, in 1976. Her body has never been found.

CNN obtained images of Rader’s drawings, which were first recovered by law enforcement after his arrest in 2005.

Rader pleaded guilty to 10 murders that took place from the 1970s to the 1990s in Wichita, Kansas, for which he’s serving 10 consecutive life sentences in a state prison. He suggested in a letter found long before his capture that he should be called “BTK,” short for “bind, torture, kill.”

In recent prison interviews, Rader told Osage County Sheriff Eddie Virden and other local area authorities he did not commit any other murders.

An attorney for the serial killer declined to comment to CNN.

CNN’s Jean Casarez sat down with Sheriff Virden for an exclusive interview about Rader’s drawings Virden hopes the public can help identify.

The sheriff launched an investigation back in January pouring over Rader’s writings, sketches and other evidence he obtained from Wichita police, finding what he believes are potential connections to several unsolved cases in the area.

Officials recovered hundreds of sketches in Rader’s belongings after his arrest years ago, but with the help of experts, Virden’s team believes a few rare color images may depict more crimes Rader committed.

Months after Kinney disappeared, the Osage County Sheriff’s Office documented an anonymous call from a man claiming the teen’s body could be found in an old barn along the Oklahoma-Kansas border, Virden told CNN.

Although investigators were able to track down the deputy who answered the call at the time, the barn is still a mystery.

Rader is now known for his signature cat-and-mouse games, sending clues about his murders to law enforcement in the years before he was eventually arrested.

Virden’s team believes a barn closely positioned next to a silo was likely a favored haunt of Rader.

“We’re hoping that releasing these, someone might recognize one of these barns or the unique features in them, or the closeness of the silo to the barn or possibly might have even found items that they didn’t know why were there that could be very important in this case,” Virden told CNN.

“Even if the barn’s not there anymore. We would still like that information.”

Just recently, law enforcement intercepted communications from Rader in prison revealing there may still be some hidden items in old barns, according to the sheriff.

Rader often sketched, according to his daughter Kerri Rawson. He honed the skills in a college drafting class, Rawson told CNN.

“My father did drafting at our house, he drew up plans for the gardens,” Rawson said. “And my dad needed to always be outside and be in the air and winter was hard for him. And so we had to find things for him to do because when he got inside and he was too cooped up, he would get all angry.”

And he loved barns and silos.

“My father absolutely loves barns and silos. Every time we drove around going camping, fishing, to college, he’d absolutely say this one – like he said, I want to retire here. And he would tease my mom about it,” Rawson told CNN’s Jean Casarez in a sit-down interview. “And then after he was arrested, we found out later that he had massive fantasies about those specific locations. So now we’re driving around trying to find those by my memory and noting them because we need to go see, is there anybody missing or buried there.”

CNN exclusively obtained digital images of Rader’s disturbing sketches, which show three bound women in what investigators believe to be barns.

One drawing shows what looks like a young female gagged and bound at her arms and legs. Officials point to the black piping running through the barn walls.

“The reason you would have that is if you were moving livestock through there, that those bars would keep the livestock from hitting probably the tin or the wood on the outside of the barn so that if an animal hit it, you know, they wouldn’t go through and dent up the tin or knock the wood off the outside,” the sheriff told CNN.

Osage County investigators believe the sketch could be linked to a missing woman last seen in Southeast Kansas in 1991.

Her name has not been made public in connection with Rader at this time.

“We know from things Dennis said on this exact photograph that it was a drawing he created from an actual barn,” Virden told CNN.

Another color drawing depicts a female victim bound and gagged in a red top.

“That would be a barn that had wood slats. You know, possibly a rounded post but in that area of the barn what would have possibly a wooden floor, you know and a lot of times in tack rooms inside of barns or in feed rooms or storage. They wouldn’t leave a dirt floor because they didn’t have livestock in that area.”

A third drawing Rader penned in black ink, shows an angle glaring down at a female lying in a barn loft space bound by the neck to a staircase post. The staircase construction caught the attention of law enforcement.

“The support post appears to have a bracket and then a bolt that bolts through that to hold everything together,” Virden said.

Last month Virden’s team uncovered what Rader called a “hidey hole” containing new evidence not previously discovered by law enforcement on the lot that was once his family home. Bondage materials were among the recovered items, CNN previously reported.

City officials demolished the home in Park City, Kansas in the years after his arrest, but the reinforced hole, according to Virden, remained intact nearly two feet in the ground.

Rader himself led the investigators back to the scene. Virden’s team uncovered a letter he wrote in 2008 from prison describing items he hid under the floor of a shed behind his home.

Now Osage County investigators hope state and federal agencies will intervene to help process the evidence that could still contain DNA to connect the serial killer to the unsolved cases or rule him out as a suspect.

They also hope to test “trophies” recovered in 2005, matching the description of items last seen with the victims in the unsolved cases.

A spokesperson for the FBI’s Kansas City field office said they were unaware of the FBI actively assisting in any current BTK-related investigations.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigations has met with Osage County officials but has not assisted in any property searches, according to Melissa Underwood, the agency’s communications director.

The police force in Pawhuska, Oklahoma, did find an unexpected resource in the serial killer’s daughter who’s joined the team as a volunteer.

Rawson has walked old haunts with investigators, recalling childhood memories that might be significant, she told CNN.

And she confronted her father for the first time in 18 years, visiting him in prison twice in recent months.

Rader, now 78, is incarcerated at the El Dorado Correctional Facility in Kansas.

Rawson spoke to the man she says she still loves as a father for the first time about his crimes as the BTK serial killer.

She could not elicit a confession, she told CNN. “He’s literally sitting six feet across from me. He hasn’t seen me in 18 years and he’s lying to me.”

Rawson and investigators are concerned time is not on their side as evidentiary items age and Rader’s health fails in prison.

“He’s rotting,” his daughter said.

“He has scoliosis very severe. He’s in a wheelchair, he has no teeth left, so he doesn’t even look like he has a jaw,” Rawson said. “He went from this like vivacious man that was hiking with me right before he was arrested, to like an elderly man, you know, his legs wrapped with like bandages.”

Rader has access to a phone, television and a tablet device with internet capabilities, according to a spokesperson for the El Dorado Correctional Facility.

He has not spoken out publicly since law enforcement dug up his former family residence, a move uncharacteristic for her dad, according to Rawson.

During her recent visit, Rawson told her father she would sit with him in prison for months straight to learn about all the things he’s done, if Rader would confess to more crimes. He has not taken her up on it, Rawson said, but she will not stop trying.

“Now I’m not in contact with him outside of the walls, because it’s not safe. If my father is listening to this, he needs to understand that the force that is me is coming for him because I’m done,” Rawson told CNN.

“I’m hopeful that even if my father didn’t do any of this, we’re going to get some answers because there’s way too many missing and dead in the Midwest and I’m done,” Rawson said.
