Now live: Earn 5% back at Target, supermarkets and gyms this quarter (Chase Freedom/Freedom Flex)

The Points Guy

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information.

2023 is here, and Chase is kicking off the new year with a bang. For the first quarter, Chase Freedom (no longer available to new applicants) and Chase Freedom Flex℠ cardholders can celebrate with the return of bonus category favorites grocery stores and gym memberships as well as a brand-new Target category.

Freedom and Freedom Flex cardholders can now activate and earn 5% cash back (or 5 points per dollar) on the Q1 bonus categories. The bonus-earning Q1 window is now open and runs through March 31, 2023.

After activation, cardmembers can earn 5% back (or 5 points per dollar spent) on up to $1,500 of spending in these categories during the eligible quarter, and 1% (or 1 point per dollar spent) after that.

As we enter this new year, many of us are making resolutions related to improving our physical and financial health. With these Q1 categories, cardholders will be rewarded for their new (or continuing) gym memberships as well as the grocery shopping for cooking more at home.

And for the first time, cardholders will also be rewarded for their Target purchases. No matter what resolutions you’re spending to achieve, you can earn bonus rewards with your Freedom or Freedom Flex card.

Here’s how it all works.

Chase Freedom and Freedom Flex Q1 2023 categories

Now through March 31, Chase Freedom and Chase Freedom Flex cardmembers can earn 5% cash back (or 5 points per dollar) on spending in the following categories:

Grocery stores.
Fitness club and gym memberships.
Target.

As noted above, you must activate your card to unlock the bonus-earning potential in these categories.

JOHN GRIBBEN/THE POINTS GUY

It’s simple to complete this process online through your Chase account — with your last name, last four digits of your card and ZIP code. Registration is open now.

Analyzing the Q1 bonus categories

Whether you’re looking to make a big gym membership purchase to push you toward your health goals or just want to maximize your daily spending, these categories make it easy for you to earn rewards on your goals in Q1.

Here are the bonus details:

Target: A new quarterly category for Chase Freedom, Target offers the opportunity to save on everything from clothing and home goods to electronics and toys.
Grocery stores (excluding Walmart): Cardmembers can earn cash back on purchases for cooking and dining at home. Additionally, cardmembers can earn 5% cash back on Instacart purchases (grocery store deliveries only) when activated through Chase Ultimate Rewards.
Fitness Club and Gym Memberships: For those who’ve set a 2023 fitness goal, earning cash back on fitness club and gym memberships can help cardmembers make healthy choices for themselves and their wallets.

Note that Chase limits the 5% back (or 5 points per dollar) to the first $1,500 spent in combined bonus categories each quarter you activate the bonus. After you reach the maximum, you’ll earn 1% back on these purchases.

Frequently asked questions about Chase Freedom and Chase Freedom Flex bonus categories

How do rotating categories work?

Each quarter, Chase announces a group of bonus categories that will earn 5% cash back (or 5 points per dollar) throughout the upcoming three-month period. Generally, these categories are announced halfway through the month before the new quarter starts to give cardmembers time to activate new categories beforehand. However, you can activate your categories up until midway through the last month of the quarter.

The categories tend to repeat periodically — for instance, grocery stores, restaurants and gas stations are all common categories that you’ll notice frequently pop up on the cash-back calendar. So depending on the categories and whether you can maximize them, these two cards can offer quite a nice chunk of cash back or bonus points over the course of a year.

How much cash back can I earn each quarter?

Chase limits the 5% back (or 5 points per dollar) to the first $1,500 spent in combined bonus categories each quarter you activate the bonus.

While that may not sound like a lot, that cash back adds up over time. Maximizing the cash-back categories each quarter, you’ll earn $75 in cash back quarterly and up to $300 per year. For a no-annual-fee credit card, that’s a lot of value.

Alternatively, since the cash back you earn comes in the form of Ultimate Rewards points, you’re looking at a potential of up to 30,000 bonus Ultimate Rewards earned each year. Suppose you also have a premium product, such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card. In that case, you can combine the Ultimate Rewards points you earn with your Chase Freedom or Freedom Flex card with those you earn from your more premium Ultimate Rewards-earning card, and they become fully transferable.

In that case, TPG values Chase points at 2 cents apiece, so the 30,000 you can earn in a year would be worth more like $600.

How do I activate my 5% categories each quarter?

You can head over to Chase’s site to activate your 5% cash back (or 5 points per dollar) for this quarter. You can also register through your Chase mobile app, making one less credit card website you’ll need to visit regularly this year.

Here’s how to register:

Head to the Chase bonus activation page or log in to your Chase account.
Enter your last name, the last four digits of your card number and your billing ZIP code. If you don’t have your card on hand, log in to your Chase account to retrieve these digits.
Click “Activate your 5%” to register.
If you have multiple Chase Freedom cards, make sure to register each one.
Save a screenshot of your activation, just in case there are any issues later — though you should also receive a “You’re Activated!” confirmation email.

Can I have both the Chase Freedom and Chase Freedom Flex to double my earning potential?

Yes, you can have both cards. So if you already have the Chase Freedom and want to add the Chase Freedom Flex to your wallet, you’re free to do so. Remember that the original Freedom card is no longer open to new applicants.

But if you’d rather only have one, the Freedom Flex is available as a product change.

And of course, you’ll also want to ensure you’re eligible for a new Chase card.

How do I maximize my Freedom and Freedom Flex cards?

The most important thing is to make sure you activate your card to earn the 5% cash back (or 5 points per dollar) each quarter in the specific categories, and then actually use your card for purchases in those categories.

You can set up a recurring reminder in your calendar, or you can sign up for the TPG newsletter (we send out a reminder when it’s time to activate every quarter — plus tips and tricks for maximizing your card strategy and scoring some excellent award redemptions).

Better yet, paired with a Chase credit card that earns fully transferable Ultimate Rewards points like the Chase Sapphire Reserve or the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card, the Chase Freedom Flex’s 5% cash back effectively becomes 5 Ultimate Rewards points per dollar, as you can learn all about in our guide detailing the “Chase Trifecta.”

In that case, you’ll be able to transfer the points earned with the Freedom Flex to Ultimate Rewards points and to travel partners like SouthwestHyatt and United.

What are common bonus categories for the Freedom and Freedom Flex?

Of course, you’ll also want to make sure that you’ll potentially be able to maximize other bonus categories throughout the year. For reference, here are the previous Chase Freedom quarterly categories all the way back to 2012, so you can decide if common categories make sense for your spending patterns:

Bottom line

Chase Freedom and Freedom Flex card members can now earn 5% back (or 5 points per dollar) on Target, grocery store, and gym membership purchases.

In addition to the rotating 5% cash back bonus categories, the Freedom Flex accrues 5% cash back on travel booked through Chase Ultimate Rewards, 3% cash back on drugstores, 3% cash back on dining (including eligible delivery services) and 1% unlimited cash back on all other purchases.

Official application link: Chase Freedom Flex with a sign-up bonus of $200 cash back after spending $500 on purchases within the first three months of account opening.

Chiefs hold off Russell Wilson’s late surge to pick up 13th win

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

Patrick Mahomes threw for 328 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to Jerick McKinnon, and the Kansas City Chiefs overcame another sloppy start to hold off the Denver Broncos 27-24 on Sunday.

Isiah Pacheco and Blake Bell also scored for the Chiefs (13-3), who overcame a 17-13 third-quarter deficit to beat the Broncos for the 15th consecutive time while keeping alive their hopes for the AFC’s No. 1 seed and lone postseason bye.

The Chiefs began the day tied with the Bills, who play Cincinnati on Monday night, for the conference’s best record.

For a while the Broncos (4-12) looked as if they would cap a chaotic week that began with the firing of first-year head coach Nathaniel Hackett in a stunning victory. But a late letdown by one of the league’s best defenses, and another interception by embattled quarterback Russell Wilson, resulted in the first loss for interim coach Jerry Rosburg.

Wilson threw for 222 yards and a touchdown while also running for a pair of scores, the second of them — after two costly penalties on the Kansas City defense — pulling Denver within 27-24 with 6:14 left in the game.

The Broncos got the ball back with just under four minutes to go, too, and picked up a quick first down. But the Kansas City defense stiffened near midfield, and Chris Jones sacked Wilson on fourth-and-2 to effectively end the game.

CHIEFS’ TRAVIS KELCE SPECULATES ON WHAT PROMPTED MAC JONES BLOCK ON ELI APPLE: ‘PROBABLY GOT FED UP WITH IT’

The Chiefs’ sluggish start against the downtrodden Broncos wasn’t all that surprising. For all their success this season, they have habitually played down to the opposition, whether it was in their overtime win at Houston or their 34-28 victory over the Broncos just three weeks ago.

Kansas City fumbled a hold on an early PAT. Mahomes threw an interception in the end zone. And Kadarius Toney fumbled a punt return deep in Kansas City territory, setting up Wilson’s touchdown run that gave Denver a 10-6 lead.

But the Chiefs also have proven over the years their ability to strike quickly, and they did that after falling behind for the first time Sunday. Mahomes answered with long passes to Toney and McKinnon, a penalty on third down gave them a fresh set of downs, and McKinnon turned a screen pass into a touchdown reception for the fifth straight game.

That streak is the longest for an NFL running back since Bill Dudley of the Lions in 1947.

The Chiefs struggled to maintain momentum after halftime, though, going three-and-out on their first three possessions. And the Broncos, with their third play-caller of the season in offensive coordinator Justin Outten, capitalized with a 63-yard touchdown drive that gave them a 17-13 lead late in the third quarter.

Then the Chiefs began looking like the Chiefs. And the Broncos like the Broncos.

RUSSELL WILSON’S BRONCOS TEAMMATES SUPPORT QB IN RESPONSE TO RUMOR HE LOST LOCKER ROOM: ‘FALSE STATEMENTS’

Mahomes led the AFC West champs briskly downfield before hitting Bell from 17 yards for his first regular-season touchdown catch. And on the very next play, Wilson threw a wobbler under pressure that L’Jarius Sneed picked off, setting up McKinnon’s second touchdown catch of the day and his eighth in the past five games.

The Broncos scored in the fourth quarter to give themselves a chance before Kansas City put the game away.

INJURIES

Broncos: RB Marlon Mack (hamstring) left in the first quarter and LG Dalton Risner (elbow) in the third. CB Damarri Mathis went into the concussion protocol in the second. LB Baron Browning (back) and DL D.J. Jones (knee) were inactive.

Chiefs: LG Joe Thuney (ankle) left late in the third quarter and WR Skyy Moore (hand) in the fourth. Sneed also hurt his hip on his interception return in the fourth.

UP NEXT

The Broncos conclude their season next Sunday against the Chargers.

The Chiefs visit the Raiders on Sunday in their regular-season finale.

Brazil’s Silva sworn in, pledges to rebuild country, hold outgoing Bolsonaro admin accountable

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

For the third time, Brazil’s Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was sworn in as president, taking office amid heightened political tensions after a close race with the far-right incumbent Jair Bolsonaro.

In a speech in Congress’ Lower House, Lula promised to bring his country “hope and reconstruction.”

“The great edifice of rights, sovereignty and development that this nation built has been systematically demolished in recent years,” he said. “To re-erect this edifice, we are going to direct all our efforts.”

Though not naming Bolsonaro by name, he promised that members of his predecessor’s administration would be held accountable.

FEDERAL POLICE IN BRAZIL SERVE SEARCH WARRANTS TARGETING PRESIDENT BOLSONARO’S SUPPORTERS FOLLOWING PROTESTS

“We do not carry any spirit of revenge against those who sought to subjugate the nation to their personal and ideological designs, but we are going to ensure the rule of law,” Lula said. “Those who erred will answer for their errors, with broad rights to their defense within the due legal process.”

The leftist defeated Bolsonaro in the Oct. 30 vote by less than 2 percentage points. For months, Bolsonaro had sown doubts about the reliability of Brazil’s electronic vote and his loyal supporters were loath to accept the loss.

Many have gathered outside military barracks since, questioning results and pleading with the armed forces to prevent Lula from taking office. His most die-hard backers resorted to what some authorities and incoming members of Lula’s administration labeled acts of “terrorism” – prompting security concerns about inauguration day events.

Lula has said his priorities are fighting poverty and investing in education and health. He has also said he will bring illegal deforestation of the Amazon to a halt. He sought support from political moderates to form a broad front and defeat Bolsonaro, then tapped some of them to serve in his Cabinet.

RUSSIA’S LAVROV FLAT OUT REJECTS ZELENSKY’S CONDITIONS FOR ‘PEACE FORMULA’

Lula left office with a personal approval rating of 83%, but political analysts doubt he will ever retain the popularity he once enjoyed. The credibility of Lula and his Workers’ Party were also tarnished by a corruption investigation. Party officials were jailed, including Lula — whose convictions were later annulled on procedural grounds. The Supreme Court later ruled that the judge presiding over the case had colluded with prosecutors to secure a conviction.

Lula and his supporters have maintained he was railroaded. Others were willing to look past possible malfeasance as a means to unseat Bolsonaro and bring the nation back together.

But Bolsonaro’s backers refuse to accept someone they view as a criminal returning to the highest office. And with tensions running hot, a series of events has prompted fear that violence could erupt on inauguration day.

How Do Winter Tires Stack Up Against Those Used In The WRC?

Carscoops

If you’ve been anywhere near social media this past week, you’ve likely seen how even the slowest maneuvers in treacherous conditions have the potential to go horribly wrong, and we’re willing to bet that a fair few of these incidents involved cars that didn’t have winter tires installed.

After proving that swapping out your summer or all-season tires for a set of winters does indeed make a significant difference to everyday driveability on snow, Jonathan Benson from Tyre Reviews is back to compare Pirelli’s Ice Zero 2 with the Pirelli SottoZero used on snowy stages of the WRC.

While the Ice Zero 2 is one of the highest-rated studded road tires, straight off the bat, it’s had to make compromises in the name of practicality. The tires themselves have to comply with the road car fitment, which means they’re typically as wide as your conventional tire. The Ice Zero 2 also has to be rated for use on public roads to ensure that driving conventional cars with these 1mm studs don’t do too much damage to the bitumen.

The WRC-spec SottoZero tires, on the other hand, don’t need to make any such regulatory accommodations. In addition to having a higher density of studs per centimeter, the rally car tires’ metal studs are 6mm longer — or in other words, seven times as long as those allowed on the road car winter tires.

Read: Which Is More Effective On Snow And Ice, All-Wheel Drive Or Winter Tires?

The WRC snow and ice tires are thinner too. While this may seem counterintuitive at first, it means there’s more pressure on the smaller surface area, allowing the SottoZeros to dig through the powdery and icy stuff to the surface below.

The results are remarkable, as Benson finds out on a purpose-built winter test track. According to him, the WRC tires make a huge difference in the traction and braking but crucially enable the car to respond even better laterally thanks to vastly-improved grip levels.

The proof is in the timings, with the racing tires being 8.2 seconds faster than the road tires around the snow circuit. Things get even more impressive on ice, with the longer studs and thinner footprint of the rally tires allowing Benson to better his winter rubber time by an astounding 17.9 seconds.

Sadly, many of us will never be able to get the opportunity to experience a proper WRC snow tire on a Lapland-like rally course. But for those of you battling the elements on the roads, you’ll still be afforded some extra grip with a set of studded black circles.

1 killed, at least 9 others injured in New Year's Eve shooting in Alabama

CNN
 —

A 24-year-old man was killed and nine others were injured in a shooting in Mobile, Alabama, Saturday night, according to local police, just blocks from where people had gathered for the city’s New Year’s Eve celebration.

Officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 200 block of Dauphin Street around 11:14 p.m. CT, the Mobile Police Department said in a news release.

When officers arrived, they found an “unknown subject” had shot a 24-year-old man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said.

Nine other victims, ranging in age from 17 to 57, also suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to local hospitals “with injuries ranging from non-life-threatening to severe,” according to the release.

No arrests have been made and it’s unclear what motivated the shooting, which happened as crowds were in the downtown area for the MoonPie Over Mobile event.

“This is an active investigation,” Mobile Police said in the release. “We will provide updates as details become available.”

California, Nevada face flooding, power outages amid winter storm

Just In | The Hill

Northern California and western Nevada were slammed over the weekend by a powerful winter storm that deluged towns and counties with several inches of rain and snowfall.

An atmospheric river storm pulled in moisture from the Pacific Ocean before pushing through the western states. As of Sunday afternoon, power was out in more than 170,000 California homes, with about 35,000 homes in Nevada also in the dark, according to poweroutage.us.

More than five inches of rain fell over the San Francisco Bay Area on Saturday, marking the region’s second wettest day on record.

Photos shared online show a flood of murky brown rainwater streaming through San Francisco’s streets.

The California Highway Patrol shut down a major route, US-101, on New Year’s Eve before re-opening it on Sunday.

A large semi-truck drove through a road closure on Saturday night and had to be towed away before the highway was re-opened, according to the agency.

Across the San Francisco Bay in Oakland, about 4.75 inches of rain fell on Saturday night. The rainfall set a new record in the city, breaking a previous one set in 1982.

Oakland crews are working to clear streets of flooding and debris, including downed trees, while also providing sandbags to residents to divert water from their homes.

The city is asking residents to stay off the roads while the work continues.

A flash flood warning is still in effect north of Oakland in Sacramento, where the National Weather Service reported several roads were underwater in the central and southern parts of the state capital.

Officials are discouraging travel around the areas of Wilton, Herald and Galt in Sacramento County and also shut down a major interstate, state route 99, after flooding was unleashed in the region from the Cosumnes River on Saturday night.

Heavy snowfall also pounded the Sierra Nevada mountains, bringing up to three feet of snow in some areas.

More snow is expected in the region this week from another, smaller storm developing along the west coast.

Several inches of snow also hit areas across western Nevada, where some regions were expecting up to 18 inches of snowfall.

Packers put up 105-yard kickoff return, pick-six in wild first quarter vs Vikings

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

The Green Bay Packers came into Lambeau Field against their NFC North rival Minnesota Vikings holding destiny in their own hands: They win out and they will make it into the playoffs.

Well, they got off to the best start possible with some incredible plays on special teams and defense.

After the Packers had a punt blocked which led to a Vikings field goal, Green Bay was looking to bounce back, and it was dynamic return man Keisean Nixon that understood the assignment.

Nixon took a kickoff from Greg Joseph five yards into the end zone out and ran it all the way back for a 105-yard return for a touchdown to go up 7-3.

NFL SLAPS PACKERS’ ALLEN LAZARD WITH $10K FINE FOR TAUNTING, WR CALLS REPRIMAND ‘VERY CONTRADICTORY’

Nixon has come close to notching his first career kickoff return for a score in recent weeks but couldn’t quite go all the way. This time, though, the Packers gave him the perfect blocks and he found the seams he needed to split the tacklers and head all the way into the end zone.

But the Packers weren’t done making game-changing plays. With the Vikings facing a 4th-and-2 on the Packers’ 37-yard line, they opted to go for it. The decision didn’t work in their favor.

Cousins dropped back to pass and tried to find T.J. Hockenson over the middle. However, Packers cornerback Darnell Savage caught the tipped pass and immediately looked for more yards upfield.

PACKERS CORNERBACK SAYS JUSTIN JEFFERSON’S DOMINANT WEEK 1 PERFORMANCE AGAINST GREEN BAY WAS A ‘FLUKE’

Savage got his blockers out in front of him, scampered past a couple tacklers, and took it to the house for a 75-yard pick-six to make it 14-3.

These are the type of plays the Packers need, as the Washington Commanders’ loss to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday makes it so that Green Bay can reach the playoffs with a win over Minnesota this week and one against the Detroit Lions in Week 18.

LeBron James stuns fans with supportive Deshaun Watson tweet after sex assault allegations against Browns QB

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

LeBron James on Sunday was dealt with some backlash for a tweet supporting quarterback Deshaun Watson during the Cleveland Browns’ game against the Washington Commanders.

Watson had three touchdown passes in his nine-completion game. The performance in the 24-10 win earned praise from the Los Angeles Lakers superstar.

“Yessir D Watson!! Another one. That boy getting his rhythm back!” James wrote.

Watson appeared to be getting his “rhythm back” after being suspended for more than half the season following more than two dozen civil lawsuits accusing him of sexual assault. The Browns quarterback settled a majority of them and didn’t receive any criminal prosecution from any of the cases.

The tweet led to some scrutiny against James.

COMMANDERS’ CARSON WENTZ FACES BOOS AS HE THROWS TWO INTERCEPTIONS IN FIRST HALF

James, a noted Browns fan, was previously a fan of the Dallas Cowboys. Earlier in the NFL season, he revealed he was no longer a Cowboys fan because of the way Jerry Jones and the organization handled the wave of protests during the national anthem a few years ago.

“There was just a lot of things that was going on during when guys were kneeling, and guys were having freedom of speech,” James said in October. “They wanted to do it in a very peaceful manner. A lot of people in their front office and a lot of people that ran the organization was like, ‘If you do that around here, then you will never play for this franchise again.’ And I just didn’t think that was appropriate.”

The Cowboys knelt before the anthem in 2017 in a show of solidarity, but Jones made it clear he did not want any of his players on a knee during the anthem. Jones later said if the team is “disrespecting the flag” then they won’t play in the game, “period.”

CNN New Year's Eve spectators take to social media when network misses midnight

At the stroke of midnight Don Lemon and revelers in New Orleans were dancing to Juvenile’s “Back That Azz Up” on CNN rather than celebrating the start of 2023 with toasts and kisses.

Spectators of the network’s New Year’s Eve took to social media after the countdown in the Central time zone was missed.

“CNN has redeemed itself by ringing in the new year in New Orleans with ‘Back That Azz Up’ and not acknowledging the stroke of midnight in any way,” Timothy Burke tweeted.

“As the clock ticked over, Lemon is seen throwing beaded necklaces into the dancing crowd, only moments later seeming to realize that the countdown and announcement had been missed,” Business Insider reports.

FOX NEWS CHANNEL HAD LARGEST CABLE TV AUDIENCE FOR 7TH-STRAIGHT YEAR IN 2022

The network was already under a watchful eye due to a much-discussed on-air booze ban following host Andy Cohen’s admitted to being “overserved” during last year’s broadcast.

Some viewers speculated the technical mistake this year was a result of Lemon not being able to hear his producers through his earpiece.

Foo Fighters address future as a band without Taylor Hawkins after his tragic death

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

With the upcoming 1-year anniversary of Foo Fighter’s rocker Taylor Hawkins death in March, the band is sharing how they will proceed without their magnetic drummer.

In a statement shared to their social media, the band discussed the arduous year they have been through.

“As we say goodbye to the most difficult and tragic year that our band has ever known, we are reminded of how thankful we are for the people that we love and cherish most, and for the loved ones who are no longer with us. Foo Fighters were formed 27 years ago to represent the healing power of music and a continuation of life. And for the past 27 years our fans have built a worldwide community, a devoted support system that has helped us all get through the darkest of times together. A place to share our joy and our pain, our hopes and fears, and to join in a chorus of life together through music,” it read.

“Without Taylor, we never would have become the band that we were – and without Taylor, we know that we’re going to be a different band going forward.”

DAVE GROHL BREAKS DOWN IN TEARS ON STAGE WHILE PERFORMING ‘TIMES LIKE THESE’ AT TAYLOR HAWKINS TRIBUTE CONCERT

The Foo Fighters were initially created by former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl, who would later recruit Hakwins to the band.

Hawkins was found dead on March 25 in a hotel room in Chaperino, Columbia, during the South American leg of the Foo Fighter’s tour. Hawkins, 50, died ahead of a concert in Bogotá.

The District Secretary of Health in Colombia also confirmed the situation in which Hawkins passed, stating in a press release translated to English, “The city’s Emergency and Emergency Regulatory Center received a report about a patient with chest pain in a hotel located north of the city. An ambulance was dispatched to attend to the case.”

A day after his passing, an initial toxicology report was released by the office of the Colombian Attorney General, which revealed the drummer had 10 different psychoactive substances in his body including “THX (Marijuana), tricyclic antidepressants, benzodiazepines, and opioids, among others.”

Since the passing of Hawkins, the band has performed two tribute concerts in memory of their bandmate, one in London and one in California.

Addressing any upcoming plans for the band, the Foo Fighters told their followers, “We also know that you, the fans, meant as much to Taylor as he meant to you. And we know that when we see you again – and we will soon – he’ll be there in spirit with all of us every night.”

While they will make their way back to the stage, the band did not provide an immediate return date.
