MSNBC host Rachel Maddow warned a second stint in the White House for former President Trump could be dangerous for the free press, going as far to say Trump wants to “execute us.”
“He wants to cancel the news, so they’re done,” Sara Haines, a co-host of The View said as Maddow appeared on the weekday table talk program on Wednesday.
“He wants to put MSNBC on trial for treason so he can execute us,” Maddow responded.
Trump last month suggested the federal government would investigate Comcast, the parent company of NBCUniversal, if he is elected president in 2024, blasting the media company “for their knowingly dishonest and corrupt coverage of people, things, and events.”
The former president regularly ridicules the media generally and NBC specifically, complaining about several of its leading hosts who are frequently critical of him and his ideas.
Trump nonetheless sat for an interview earlier this fall with veteran journalist Kristen Welker, who the network recently tapped to serve as moderator of Meet The Press.
Trump is the front runner for the GOP nomination for president in 2024, with most national polls showing him with a double-digit lead on the rest of the Republican primary field.
Maddow, who has scaled back her hosting duties on MSNBC in recent months to focus on special projects, remains a staple of the cable channel’s live coverage and analysis of major events, including Trump’s ongoing political and legal battles.
