Political environment favors Republicans: Gallup

Just In News

Influential pollster Gallup said in a new report that the political environment this year favors Republicans for the presidency.

The pollster pointed to multiple conditions that it said were positive for Republicans. Those included President Biden’s low approval rating in a recent survey — 39 percent — for how he “is handling his job as president,” and Americans’ negative emotions on “the way things are going in” their country, with 22 percent saying they aren’t “satisfied” when it comes to their country’s direction.

“Nearly all Gallup measures that have shown some relationship to past presidential election outcomes or that speak to current perceptions of the two major parties favor the Republican Party over the Democratic Party,” Jeffrey M. Jones, a senior editor with Gallup, said in the Monday report.

“Chief among these are a Republican advantage in U.S. adults’ party identification and leanings, the belief that the GOP rather than the Democratic Party is better able to handle the most important problem facing the country, Americans’ dissatisfaction with the state of the nation, and negative evaluations of the economy with a Democratic administration in office,” Jones continued.

Other findings the Gallup report noted included more Americans saying the GOP is the “political party” they “think will do a better job of keeping the country prosperous” in coming years, at 55 percent versus only 44 percent saying the same about Democrats.

Vice President Harris is leading former President Trump in an average of polls from The Hill/Decision Desk by 3.9 points, with the vice president garnering 50.4 percent support to the former president’s 46.5 percent.

The 2024 presidential race has experienced multiple shakeups, including Biden stepping away from his campaign, an assassination attempt against Trump in July and then another apparent one earlier this month.

The Gallup survey took place between Sept. 3 and 15, polling 1,007 people, and has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence level.
