Republican Presidential candidate Nikki Haley said the battle in Gaza and Israel will be “hard” and “long,” but “necessary” in a social media post Thursday evening.
“At the UN, I saw how Israel was criticized. It will be worse this time,” she posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. “The battle in Gaza will be hard & long, but it’s necessary.”
Haley, the former governor of South Carolina and former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said the United States’s support for Israel must not waver.
Statements from lawmakers and officials in the U.S. have overwhelmingly supported Israel in its fight to defeat Hamas after the group invaded the country in a surprise attack that has left thousands dead and many unaccounted for. Protests in support of both Palestine and Israel have begun across the country and around the world.
“Much of the civilized world stands w/ Israel when she gets hit,” Haley continued. “We must continue to stand with Israel when she hits back.”
President Biden has pledged his support for Israel. The U.S. provides about $3 billion in aid each year to Israel, but an emergency aid package may be held up in Congress with the House unable to elect a new Speaker.
