Crenshaw says pressure campaign by Jordan is ‘dumbest way’ to support GOP nominee for Speaker

Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-Texas) blasted some of his fellow Republicans for planning an online pressure campaign on behalf of Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), saying that they will not get more votes backing him that way.

“So what I would really recommend to Jordan’s allies too, is a lot of them have mounted this high-pressure campaign,” Crenshaw said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “They’re going to whip up Twitter against the people who are against Jordan.”

“That is the dumbest way to support Jordan, and I’m supporting Jordan. I’m going to vote for Jordan. And as somebody who wants Jim Jordan, the dumbest thing you can do is to continue pissing off those people and entrench them,” he continued.

The House GOP has been in turmoil since eight of its members joined with Democrats to oust Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from the Speakership nearly two weeks ago. Since then, Republicans have not been able to reach a consensus on who should lead them next.

The GOP conference voted to nominate Jordan for the role last week, but it is unclear whether he will have enough support on the House floor to clinch the top spot.

Crenshaw also said that Jordan will be facing an uphill battle for the Speakership this week, but reiterated that any issues that people may have with him should not be dealt with in such a public light.

“Come on people, everybody’s got to grow up, get it together,” he said. “If there’s differences, let’s sort them out. I don’t think we should take it to the floor. I don’t think we should have that play out. You know, people are like, ‘It’s gonna be more public and then we can have pressure.’ And it’s already pretty public. It’s not necessary at this point.”
