Giants clinch first playoff berth since 2016 in blowout win vs Colts

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

The wait is over for New York Giants fans, as their team is heading to the playoffs for the first time since the 2016 season after a dominant 38-10 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

In front of a sold-out MetLife Stadium crowd, the Giants knew destiny was in their own hands and clearly understood the assignment, scoring over 30 points for the first time since Week 5 of the 2020 season.

A lot of that has to do with the play of Giants quarterback Daniel Jones. Not only did he throw for two touchdowns, but he also scored two rushing touchdowns in the second half to lead the Giants in one of his best career games.

Because they were up 38-10 in the fourth quarter, head coach Brian Daboll pulled Jones and other starters out of the game, and the crowd erupted with a chant for Jones. He finished with 177 yards and two passing touchdowns on 19 of 24, while leading New York in rushing with 91 yards and two scores on 11 carries.

The Giants were methodical as always on offense, which included an 11-play, 71-yard drive that ate 6:48 minutes of clock for their first touchdown of the game. Jones scrambled out to his right and found Richie James for six yards to cap off the drive and take the lead, 7-3.

GIANTS’ KAYVON THIBODEAUX CELEBRATES SACK AS COLTS’ NICK FOLES WRITHES IN PAIN

From there, it was all New York. After a short drive by the Colts, the Giants went right back on the attack, and Isaiah Hodgins secured the six-yard touchdown pass from Jones to go up 14-3.

Colts quarterback Nick Foles, getting his second start in two weeks, didn’t finish the game under center after a Kayvon Thibodeaux sack led to a rib injury. He was in immediate pain after Thibodeaux took him down, and he was eventually carted off the field.

Foles finished the game 8 of 13 for 81 yards with no touchdowns and one interception by Landon Collins, who took it 52 yards to the house for a pick-six in the second quarter to make it 21-3.

Sam Ehlinger would replace Foles and find Michael Pittman Jr. for a touchdown in the third quarter. But that’s all he could produce on the scoreboard, tallying 60 yards on 9 of 14 passing.

Looking more into the stat sheet, Saquon Barkley had a pedestrian game compared to his Pro Bowl-level production, totaling 58 yards on 12 carries. James led the Giants receiving with 76 yards and his touchdown catches on seven receptions. Hodgins and tight end Daniel Bellinger both had 42 yards receiving as well.

While their playoff ticket is punched, the Giants still have a Week 18 bout against the Philadelphia Eagles on the road next week to complete the regular season. It will be interesting to see how Daboll plays his guys, as well as the Eagles, with both teams wanting to be as healthy as possible heading into the postseason.

As for the Colts, who move to 4-11-1 on the season, they will have one last game against the Houston Texans at home next Sunday.

2024 contest comes into view with hurdles for both parties

Top News: US & International Top News Stories Today | AP News

NEW YORK (AP) — Both political parties are opening the new year confronting critical questions about the people and policies they want to embrace as the next election speeds into view.

The challenges are particularly urgent for Republicans, who hoped to enter 2023 with a secure grip on one, if not both, chambers of Congress. Instead, an underwhelming midterm election yielded only a thin House majority that will expose fierce intraparty divisions this week as California Rep. Kevin McCarthy fights for the speakership. And before the end of the month, the Republican National Committee must resolve a divisive leadership battle of its own.

A central figure in virtually everything is Donald Trump, the former president who transformed the GOP more than seven years ago and is still fighting to exert his will over Republicans in Congress, the RNC and Republican voters just as the next presidential primary season begins.

RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel acknowledged, in an interview, that her party’s greatest political challenge ahead may come from within as party leaders navigate Trump’s outsized role.

“There’s so much at stake we can’t afford to be divided heading into 2024,” McDaniel said, promising that the RNC would be neutral in the looming presidential nomination process. “If we are divided, we will lose.”

For now, at least, Democrats appear to be far more united than their Republican counterparts.

But much depends on Joe Biden and whether the 80-year-old president will follow through on his plan to seek reelection. If he eschews another term — and a formal announcement may be months away — Democrats would be thrust into a murky future with no obvious popular alternatives.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who did not rule out another presidential bid of his own, said Democrats are also at a “pivotal moment,” facing cracks in their delicate political coalition among young people, African Americans, Latinos and working-class voters.

“It pains me very, very much that we’re seeing more and more working-class people voting Republican,” he said in an interview. “Politically, that is a disaster, and Democrats have to recognize that serious problem and address it.”

Though many voters may be tired of the never-ending campaign that is U.S. politics, especially after a high-stakes midterm election in 2022, the tense dynamics guarantee the political spotlight will only burn brighter in the new year. If history is a guide, the opening presidential primary debates are just seven months away. And the debate stage is expected to be crowded — at least on the GOP side. No fewer than 10 high-profile Republicans are actively weighing 2024 presidential bids in open defiance of Trump, emboldened by the growing belief that the former president is as politically vulnerable as he’s ever been.

At the moment, Trump is the only announced candidate in the Republican primary. But a handful of candidates are expected to join by the end of March, while some higher-profile contenders — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, among them — believe they can wait until late spring or even early summer to make their intentions known.

Few believe Trump will be easy to topple in a GOP primary. Already, he has begun to lash out at would-be rivals by name, and he maintains a rock-solid grip among the party’s most active voters, who will dominate GOP primary contests.

Still, voters will have several options in a likely field that features DeSantis, former Vice President Mike Pence, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and outgoing Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, among several others. Most have already begun actively courting donors and making connections on the ground in early states on the presidential primary calendar.

Before the presidential nomination process begins in earnest, the GOP must first resolve a contentious leadership fight in the House. And by month’s end, the Republican National Committee will decide whether to elect McDaniel to a fourth two-year term.

Much of the energy from Trump’s Make America Great Again movement has rallied behind California attorney Harmeet Dhillon in an increasingly nasty leadership fight that will be decided at the committee’s winter meeting later in the month after three consecutive disappointing election cycles.

Trump and his loyalists will figure prominently in each of the clashes. But prominent establishment Republicans are pushing back much more aggressively.

Steven Law, a key Mitch McConnell ally who leads the Senate GOP’s leading super PAC, vowed to “play a much more assertive role” in shaping future Senate contests. That’s just as the incoming head of the Senate GOP campaign arm, Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., suggests that his committee will actively play in Republican primaries to ensure that candidates who can be more competitive with the broader general election audience advance. That’s a notable reversal from the committee’s current hands-off practice, which was blamed for elevating candidates who failed to expand their support beyond the base.

On paper, Senate Republicans have major opportunities ahead in red states like West Virginia, Montana and Ohio, where Democrats are up for reelection in 2024. To take full advantage, however, the GOP must avoid the same “candidate quality” issues that plagued the party in the November midterms as a slate of deeply flawed Trump-backed candidates lost key Senate contests in Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, New Hampshire and Pennsylvania.

“Recruitment is going to be job one, starting now,” Law said. “The first step is to do everything we can to get the best possible candidate in the field.”

Law was optimistic that Trump would stay out of Senate primary contests in 2024 given the needs of his presidential campaign. McConnell, R-Ky., the Senate’s Republican leader, offered a similar sentiment in a recent interview with NBC News.

“We can do a better job with less potential interference,” McConnell said of Trump. “The former president may have other things to do.”

Meanwhile, Democrats have issues of their own to sort out — the most pressing, of course, is whether Biden will seek a second term. Already, he is the oldest president in U.S. history. Polling suggests that a significant number of voters in both parties don’t want him to run again.

The Democratic president, who spent new year’s weekend with family in the U.S. Virgin Islands, has said he aims to make a final decision over the holidays.

Biden told reporters the day after the midterms that he intends to run, but that he is a “respecter of fate.” Aides and allies are already making preparations for a campaign launch, though they are avoiding overt steps that could be seen as getting in front of Biden’s decision-making process.

A formal campaign launch isn’t expected until the second quarter of 2023, both to maximize the incumbency advantage offered to Biden — allowing him to try to stay above the political fray for as long as possible — and to avoid having to report fundraising during the historically weak first quarter.

And while a 2024 Biden run is likely, some Democrats are working to change his mind.

A progressive group has been running ads under the banner “Don’t Run Joe” across Georgia, Michigan and South Carolina in recent days. The ad campaign features Democratic voters condemning the president as “status-quo Joe,” while highlighting his weak polling numbers.

“If he runs, the election is at serious risk,” one voter says of Biden in the new ad, which will also begin running on CNN in Washington, D.C., on Monday, according to one of the group’s leaders, Norman Solomon.

There is no clear Democratic alternative should Biden not run, however. That may help explain why most Democratic officials are openly encouraging the president to run again.

In an interview, progressive leader Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., said he wouldn’t challenge the president in a primary and he discouraged anyone from the party’s progressive wing from doing so.

“At this point, I don’t think a candidacy from someone would do anything other than weaken the president. And why would you want to do that headed into an election that’s going to be close?” he said.

Quentin Wathum-Ocama, president of the Young Democrats of America, has been critical of Biden in the past but said he’s “good” if Biden wants to run again.

Even if young people are not overly excited about the Biden administration, he said, they feel a “sense of duty and obligation” to support the party because of the threats to democracy that Trump and his allies represent.

“We’re not always going to be super enthused, but we’re going to show the hell up,” Wathum-Ocama said. “We’re obligated to show up because we know what happens next — and that could be something even scarier than what we saw on Jan. 6.”

Sanders insisted that the Democratic Party “has got to be more than the anti-Trump party.”

The Vermont independent said Democrats in Congress must move with real urgency to address the erosion of working-class voters who are increasingly willing to support Trump and his Republican allies. He called on Senate Democrats to adopt a higher minimum wage, among other worker-friendly legislation that would test the new Republican-controlled House’s commitment to working-class voters.

As for his own 2024 intentions, the 81-year-old Sanders, who sought the Democratic nomination for president in 2016 and 2020, said it was not the right time to discuss whether he might launch another White House bid.

“I’ll make a decision at the appropriate time,” Sanders said. “People need to breathe.”

NASA chief warns China could claim territory on the moon if it wins new 'space race'

NASA’s top administrator says the U.S. is in a new space race with China and warned that a Chinese win could result in the country claiming to “own” vast swaths of the moon.

NASA administrator Bill Nelson, a former astronaut and Florida senator, warned that it is entirely possible that China would cordon off the most resource-rich areas of the lunar surface if they establish a presence there first, Politico reported Sunday.

“It is a fact: we’re in a space race,” he told the outlet. “And it is true that we better watch out that they don’t get to a place on the moon under the guise of scientific research. And it is not beyond the realm of possibility that they say, ‘Keep out, we’re here, this is our territory.’”

Nelson went on to point to China’s aggression in the South China Sea, where the Chinese government has routinely made claims of sovereignty over areas belonging to other countries.

New Year, new drama: Grief-stricken woman wonders if she can ‘sneak out’ of a friend’s father-daughter dance

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

A grieving Reddit user has been reassured by others on the social media site that skipping out during a friend’s “father-daughter” wedding dance would not be inappropriate after she — the Reddit user — shared her worries and conflicted feelings about the sentimental moment.

A user by the name of “Wakalakatime” asked others if she would seem like a jerk “for leaving my friend’s wedding party during the father-daughter dance?”

She shared her query on Reddit’s “Am I the A*****e” (AITA) subreddit on Dec. 30, 2022.

WEDDING MISHAP: BRIDE STOPS ENTIRE CEREMONY WHEN SHE FORGETS PART OF HER WEDDING DRESS

The user said she had recently lost her own father — and that the two “were incredibly close and the grief has been all-consuming” for her.

She added, “I don’t enjoy social events anymore because the grief follows me like a dark cloud, but I’ve agreed to go to my friend’s wedding, which is abroad.”

“Wakalakatime” and her friend are both 28-year-old women, she said.

In addition to the emotional challenges for her of attending the friend’s wedding, “Wakalakatime” said she has a “breastfed infant” at home whom she’ll be leaving behind with her mom while she travels.

While “Wakalakatime” said she knows she will need to “be a supportive and happy presence” for her friend on the woman’s wedding day, she does not think she’ll be able to handle the father-daughter dance portion of the event.

AMERICAN BRIDE GOES VIRAL FOR FAMILY’S ‘SURREAL’ REACTION TO HER INDIAN WEDDING ATTIRE

“My husband has suggested we quietly pop outside for some air during this, and I like the idea,” she said.

However, one of her colleagues — a 38-year-old woman whom “Wakalakatime” said is “wedding obsessed” — disagreed with her plan.

The colleague “implied that I would be [the jerk] for ‘making it about myself,'” she wrote on Reddit.

“It’s only one song, and we should be able to sneak out without anyone noticing, but now I’m questioning the whole thing,” the woman also shared.

Fox News Digital reached out to “Wakalakatime” for comment.

On the AITA subreddit, Redditors can reply to posts saying that the poster is “NTA” (“Not the A*****e), “YTA” (“You’re the A*****e”), “NAH” (“No A*****e Here”) or “ESH” (“Everyone Sucks Here”).

Users also can “upvote” responses they think are helpful and “downvote” ones that are not.

Every other Redditor who replied to the post said that “Wakalakatime” would not be acting poorly if she makes a discrete exit during the father-daughter dance at her friend’s wedding.

AS JOE BIDEN’S GRANDDAUGHTER IS MARRIED TODAY, HERE’S A LOOK BACK AT OTHER WHITE HOUSE WEDDINGS

The top upvoted comment, written by Reddit user “MbMinx,” said that “there’s nothing rude about” stepping out of the reception for a moment, “especially if you just go quietly.”

“I lost my father nearly 10 years ago, and I would still struggle watching a father-daughter dance,” this person wrote.

“Grief is like that,” she said.

“You aren’t making the moment ‘about you.’ You are planning to let them have their moment. We can’t turn our feelings off just because others might find them inconvenient,” the same individual wrote.

The person also wrote, “Anyone who sees wedding etiquette as more important than literal life and death is just plain wrong.”

Yet another person wrote to her, “Really, the bride and groom not only likely won’t mind but won’t even notice. When I got married, I was so busy that I didn’t notice what individual people were doing.”

Other people, though, were critical of the “wedding-obsessed” coworker.

“Your colleague is a massive AH. Just putting that out there. Anyone who sees wedding etiquette as more important than literal life and death is just plain wrong,” wrote a Reddit user who goes by the name “mynamecouldbesam.”

“She’s a bully. I’m so sorry. I lost my dad when I was 15 and our weddings were hard for both my sister and I. She clearly doesn’t understand the grief,” wrote Reddit user “Lucia_of_Carlentini.”

“Stepping outside is actually the kind thing to do. If you stayed [inside] and started crying, that might actually cause a scene. You’re spot on and doing the right thing,” this user added.

Giants’ Kayvon Thibodeaux celebrates sack as Colts’ Nick Foles writhes in pain

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

New York Giants rookie Kayvon Thibodeaux has made a major impact for his team over the last few weeks and the solid play continued against the Indianapolis Colts.

The young pass rusher had four tackles, a sack and two tackles for a loss against Colts quarterback Nick Foles in the first half of their game. New York took a 24-3 lead into halftime.

But it was a sack on Foles toward the end of the Colts’ final drive of the first half that raised eyebrows. Thibodeaux got to Foles for his fourth sack of the season and celebrated by doing snow angels on the dry turf at MetLife Stadium. Next to Thibodeaux’s snow angels was Foles, who was down in pain.

Foles appeared to be writhing in pain as the pass rusher celebrated next to him. It wasn’t clear whether Thibodeaux knew that Foles was injured on the play but the optics didn’t look great and the NFL world watching the game voiced their opinion about the move on social media.

DANIEL JONES, SAQUON BARKLEY RETURN ON GIANTS’ TO-DO LIST IN OFFSEASON: REPORT

Sam Ehlinger came into the game for Foles in the second half.

The Giants came into the game needing a win to get into the playoffs for the first time since the 2016 season.

Thibodeaux has been a big reason why the Giants have turned things around. New York made him the No. 5 overall pick of the 2022 draft and he’s been a key player since making his debut in Week 3.

He had 44 tackles, three sacks and a fumble recovery for a touchdown coming into the game against the Colts.

Commanders’ Carson Wentz faces boos as he throws two interceptions in first half

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

Washington Commanders quarterback Carson Wentz faced boos from the fans at FedExField on Sunday in his return to the field against the Cleveland Browns.

Wentz first started to hear the boos rain down on him in the first quarter when he threw an interception to Browns cornerback Denzel Ward. He heard them again in the second quarter when his third drive of the game led to a Grant Delpit interception. Two interceptions in the first half was not a good start.

Washington was able to get some points on the board before the end of the first half.

Wentz led the team on a 21-play, 96-yard drive to get the Commanders on top 7-3. The drive ended with a Wentz quarterback sneak at the goal line for the score.

DANIEL JONES, SAQUON BARKLEY RETURN ON GIANTS’ TO-DO LIST IN OFFSEASON: REPORT

The veteran quarterback was 6-of-10 with 62 passing yards and two picks in the first half. He was sacked once. Logan Thomas led the way with three catches for 32 yards.

Wentz was put back into the starting lineup after coming into the game against the San Francisco 49ers last week. He had been out since Week 6 due to a fractured ring finger and lost his job to Taylor Heinicke for a bit.

But the Commanders’ inability to keep their winning ways up led Ron Rivera to go back to Wentz.
