What is wave season? Perhaps the cheapest time to book a cruise

The Points Guy

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information.

When is the cheapest time of year to book a cruise? It might very well be wave season.

Well then, what is wave season, you ask? It’s the time frame at the start of every year when all the cruise lines tout discounted fares or special deals in the hopes of booking up their voyages for the next 12 months. It dovetails nicely with the period in which many couples and families plan their vacations for the year.

If you’ve had your eye on a cruise vacation, wave season is the perfect time to price it out and see what kind of special cruise deal you can snag. You may find a great low price on your next cruise vacation. Or, you may get a slew of freebies that stretch your vacation dollars that much further.

Read on to find out what wave season is, when it takes place, the cruise deals to look for and how to get the best possible value during this extra cheap time to book a cruise.

What is wave season?

PETER ADAMS/GETTY IMAGES

Wave season is the time of year when cruise lines run some of their most competitive sales. This promotional period gets its name from the “wave” of deals convincing travelers to take a trip “on the waves.” It’s a win-win; the cruise lines fill many berths for the coming year, and cruisers take advantage of discounts and value-adds on their booking.

Wave season promotions are designed to entice you to not only book a cruise for later in the year but also ones for dates as far as two years in the future. Last-minute voyages may also be on sale. You can find wave season promotions from nearly every major cruise line, including big-ship, small-ship, river and expedition lines, plus deals on sailings around the world, from Alaska to Antarctica and from the eastern Caribbean to the Western Mediterranean.

When is wave season?

Wave season generally starts in January and concludes at the end of March. Just like how Christmas decorations are lately appearing in retail stores earlier than they used to, we’ve seen the big cruise sales starting even earlier over the past several years, too. These days, it’s common for cruise lines to release deals for Black Friday and Cyber Monday in November and keep them active into the following year, when they’re rebranded as wave season deals, perhaps with small tweaks.

There are several reasons why wave season takes place when it does. Cold winter weather in many northern areas has travelers dreaming of and eager to book warm-weather getaways. Many families make that year’s vacation plans at the start of the year after the hectic season of holiday shopping, entertaining and traveling is over. Plus, cruise lines have closed the books on the previous year and are eager to start filling ships for the coming year. This convergence of interests makes January through March the perfect time to offer incentives for people to book a cruise.

What cruise deals are offered?

ANDREW PEACOCK/GETTY IMAGES

The important thing to know about wave season sales is that you aren’t just looking for reduced cruise fares, though those are a great place to begin. The real incentive is the bevy of bonuses cruise lines add to their promotions, making it tough to pass up booking a cruise (or three).

Here are the three types of booking incentives you’ll see during wave season.

Cruise deals and discounts

Some cruise lines take the direct approach and offer you money back on your booking. These cruise deals can take many forms, such as:

Discounted cruise fares (e.g., 40% off, $500 back, etc.).
Reduced deposits (e.g., lock in your cruise with just $1 or $25 and pay the remainder 90 days before sailing).
Two-for-one cruise fares, or get a discounted second fare when you pay full price for the first.
Third and/or fourth passengers in a cabin sail free or at a discounted rate.
Kids sail free or at a discount.

Freebies and extra-value perks

Some cruise lines prefer to keep prices higher during wave season but offer certain amenities for free that you would otherwise have to pay. These include perks that add value to your purchase and save you from a higher onboard bill when you finally set sail.

Complimentary booking perks might include:

Free airfare from select U.S. gateways.
Pre-cruise overnight hotel stay.
Onboard credit you can use to pay for specialty dining, shore excursions and more.
Beverage packages.
Prepaid specialty dining fees.
Prepaid gratuities.
Free internet access.
Complimentary shore excursions or tour credit.

Cabin upgrades

The last type of offer you can expect to see during wave season is complimentary cabin upgrades. You pay the rate for one type of cabin but get to stay in a “nicer” room that would usually cost more.

Cabin upgrades come in two types:

Upgrade within a cabin category (e.g., from a cheaper inside cabin to a larger or better located inside cabin).
Upgrade to the next cabin category (e.g., pay the inside cabin price but stay in an outside or even balcony cabin).

Typically with wave season promotions, these upgrades are essentially a discount on the higher-category room, and you still get to pick the location of the upgraded cabin.

Where can you find wave season deals?

Nearly every cruise seller wants a piece of the wave season spending spree, so you can expect to find wave season deals in many places.

Almost every cruise line will offer its own wave season deal, which will be valid whether you book directly through the cruise line, via an online travel seller or with a travel agent. It’s not just the major cruise lines that offer promotions at this time. A small expedition cruise line might put its bucket list Antarctica voyages on sale, or a river cruise line you’ve been eyeing might slash fares on its Rhine and Danube river sailings.

In addition to the lines themselves, travel sellers may tack on their own promotions as well. The travel agent down the street might throw in a bottle of Champagne, or your favorite travel website, such as Expedia, might offer an extra deal or two. Cast a wide net when looking for deals, and you’re sure to find a bunch.

How do you know if you’re getting the best deal?

It is true that cruise lines can sometimes be tricky when it comes to deals. That “free” beverage package might require you to pay actual money for an automatic bar gratuity calculated on its theoretical value, and that 50% off deal might be based on an inflated cruise fare that no one ever pays. If you want to make sure you’re getting the best deal during wave season, you need to do some research in advance.

As you narrow down your cruise choices in the fall, take note of the current per-passenger fares and any available perks for the cruises that interest you most. Don’t forget any special discounts you might be eligible for (think: senior, teacher, military, Florida resident). Price out different cabin categories above and below the room you think you’ll book. Also, look up prices for onboard extras, such as beverage packages, internet access and specialty restaurant meals, so you have a sense of what you might spend on top of the cruise fare.

Then, as cruise lines announce their sales and included promotional perks, you can compare the promotional rates to previous prices. In that way, you can determine if the sale actually represents a good value for you.

How to prepare for wave season

ASHLEY KOSCIOLEK/THE POINTS GUY

So, how can you prepare to make the most of wave season? There are a few methods.

Research which cruises you want to book

You’ll be better able to jump on a wave season deal if you’ve already thought about the places you want to cruise, the specific cruise lines you wish to sail, available itineraries and dates that you’d consider. Do you want to plan a family cruise with the kids, a solo getaway or a multigenerational reunion trip? Or, perhaps you’re dreaming of a warm-weather getaway to the Caribbean or a bucket list journey to Alaska.

If you don’t know which cruise line would suit you best, don’t just choose whichever line has the best wave season deals because the onboard vibe might not fit your personality. Instead, read TPG’s beginner’s guide to picking a cruise line to help you determine which brands and ships are the best match.

Armed with this knowledge, you can then keep an eye out for wave season deals for the trip parameters you’ve determined.

Join cruise line email lists

You could monitor cruise line websites and social media feeds over the next few months so you don’t miss any sales, but an even better idea is to join the email lists for the cruise lines you like. That way, they’ll tell you exactly when a sale is about to begin.

Find a travel agent

While you might not use a travel agent for other sorts of trips, you should consider one whenever you cruise. Agents that specialize in cruise travel often get advance notice of sales. They also typically have access to special rates or perks you won’t be able to find on your own, and they tend to offer their own suite of bonuses as an incentive to book through them.

For example, the right travel agent could get you several hundred dollars in onboard credit, even with Disney Cruise Line, which is notoriously light on sales and discounts. You can work with a large online travel seller, all of whom have sales representatives you can call for help, or find an individual travel agent in your area. Ask your friends if they can recommend someone, call up your local AAA office or locate a cruise-certified agent on the Cruise Lines International Association website.

Also, note that cruise line deals have all sorts of terms and conditions. A knowledgeable travel agent will know which itineraries offer the best version of the current deals and can guide you appropriately.

Sign up for the right credit card

If you’re a fan of stacking deals, you can enjoy cruise discounts, cash back and perks when you work with a travel agent to book a cruise during a sale and pay with a credit card that gives you a cruise-related bonus. If you don’t already have a card that gets you extra perks for your cruise purchases, such as The Platinum Card® from American Express, you might want to apply for one in advance of wave season.

A cruise booking, plus the affiliated travel purchases (think: a pre-cruise hotel stay and flights to the departure port) can be a significant investment, even with wave season promotions. Consider signing up for a new credit card and using your cruise purchase to reach the minimum spend necessary to earn the booking bonus. You’ll want to apply in advance of wave season so you’ve got the new card in hand when you’re ready to pay for that sailing.

Bottom line

Cruise lines come out with deals throughout the year, so there’s always an opportunity to find a low price on select sailings. But if you want a smorgasbord of offers to choose from all at the same time, wave season is one of the best times for finding a cheap cruise or more inclusive fare. Do your homework in the fall or over winter break, and you’ll be well prepared to jump on a bargain as soon as you see one in the new year.

‘Avatar’ Sequel Again Dominates Box Office

USA – Voice of America

Avatar: The Way of Water” is the box office king for a third straight week and shows no sign of slowing down.

James Cameron’s long-awaited sequel to the first “Avatar” film brought in an estimated $63 million over the holiday weekend, roughly the same as the previous week, and now has made more than $400 million domestically and more than $1.3 billion globally. “The Way of Water” is already the 15th highest global release ever, just behind the first “Black Panther.”

Numbers released Sunday by Comscore showed “Avatar” far ahead of the runner-up, Universal’s “Shrek” spinoff “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” which made an estimated $16 million, and Disney’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which brought in around $4.8 million.

The Sony biopic “Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance With Somebody” made $4.2 million in its second week of release. “Babylon,” the epic of early Hollywood starring Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, continued to fare badly despite its five Golden Globe nominations. The Paramount release earned just $2.7 million in its second week, a 24% drop, and averaged just $815 per location. By comparison, the new “Avatar,” a 20th Century Studios film, averaged more than $15,000.

New Year, new drama: Grief-stricken woman wonders if she can ‘sneak out’ of a friend’s father-daughter dance

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

A grieving Reddit user has been reassured by others on the social media site that skipping out during a friend’s “father-daughter” wedding dance would not be inappropriate after she — the Reddit user — shared her worries and conflicted feelings about the sentimental moment.

A user by the name of “Wakalakatime” asked others if she would seem like a jerk “for leaving my friend’s wedding party during the father-daughter dance?”

She shared her query on Reddit’s “Am I the A*****e” (AITA) subreddit on Dec. 30, 2022.

WEDDING MISHAP: BRIDE STOPS ENTIRE CEREMONY WHEN SHE FORGETS PART OF HER WEDDING DRESS

The user said she had recently lost her own father — and that the two “were incredibly close and the grief has been all-consuming” for her.

She added, “I don’t enjoy social events anymore because the grief follows me like a dark cloud, but I’ve agreed to go to my friend’s wedding, which is abroad.”

“Wakalakatime” and her friend are both 28-year-old women, she said.

In addition to the emotional challenges for her of attending the friend’s wedding, “Wakalakatime” said she has a “breastfed infant” at home whom she’ll be leaving behind with her mom while she travels.

While “Wakalakatime” said she knows she will need to “be a supportive and happy presence” for her friend on the woman’s wedding day, she does not think she’ll be able to handle the father-daughter dance portion of the event.

AMERICAN BRIDE GOES VIRAL FOR FAMILY’S ‘SURREAL’ REACTION TO HER INDIAN WEDDING ATTIRE

“My husband has suggested we quietly pop outside for some air during this, and I like the idea,” she said.

However, one of her colleagues — a 38-year-old woman whom “Wakalakatime” said is “wedding obsessed” — disagreed with her plan.

The colleague “implied that I would be [the jerk] for ‘making it about myself,'” she wrote on Reddit.

“It’s only one song, and we should be able to sneak out without anyone noticing, but now I’m questioning the whole thing,” the woman also shared.

Fox News Digital reached out to “Wakalakatime” for comment.

On the AITA subreddit, Redditors can reply to posts saying that the poster is “NTA” (“Not the A*****e), “YTA” (“You’re the A*****e”), “NAH” (“No A*****e Here”) or “ESH” (“Everyone Sucks Here”).

Users also can “upvote” responses they think are helpful and “downvote” ones that are not.

Every other Redditor who replied to the post said that “Wakalakatime” would not be acting poorly if she makes a discrete exit during the father-daughter dance at her friend’s wedding.

The top upvoted comment, written by Reddit user “MbMinx,” said that “there’s nothing rude about” stepping out of the reception for a moment, “especially if you just go quietly.”

“I lost my father nearly 10 years ago, and I would still struggle watching a father-daughter dance,” this person wrote.

“Grief is like that,” she said.

“You aren’t making the moment ‘about you.’ You are planning to let them have their moment. We can’t turn our feelings off just because others might find them inconvenient,” the same individual wrote.

The person also wrote, “Anyone who sees wedding etiquette as more important than literal life and death is just plain wrong.”

Yet another person wrote to her, “Really, the bride and groom not only likely won’t mind but won’t even notice. When I got married, I was so busy that I didn’t notice what individual people were doing.”

Other people, though, were critical of the “wedding-obsessed” coworker.

“Your colleague is a massive AH. Just putting that out there. Anyone who sees wedding etiquette as more important than literal life and death is just plain wrong,” wrote a Reddit user who goes by the name “mynamecouldbesam.”

Trump rings in new year at Mar-a-Lago with club members, political allies

Just In | The Hill

Former President Trump’s annual New Year’s Eve party at Mar-a-Lago was packed this year, with the guests reportedly including hundreds of the club’s members and Trump political allies.

Among the attendees were MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell and the former president’s onetime attorney Rudy Giuliani. Eric Trump and wife Lara were also in attendance, as well as Melania Trump, according to The Palm Beach Post. But several other family members appeared notably absent, including Donald Trump Jr. and Ivanka Trump.

Giuliani tweeted multiple videos from the event, including one in which Trump gives the former New York City mayor a shout-out, saying “Rudy Giuliani, the greatest mayor in the history of New York, and couldn’t we use him now, right? Thank you, Rudy!”

None of the high-profile figures who attended said anything about Trump or their expectations for 2023 as they walked the event’s red carpet, The Palm Beach Post reported.

The former president, who announced his 2024 presidential run in November, spoke briefly with the media, reiterating some of his key policy concerns while avoiding certain questions.

“We need a strong border and we need it now,” he said, according to The Palm Beach Post. He later added, “We also have to bring back the economy … with inflation destroying our country.”

But Trump reportedly evaded reporters’ questions about whether he would support banning abortion nationwide and a request for a probe into COVID-19 vaccines made by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), long seen as the former president’s most formidable potential challenger for the 2024 GOP nomination, earlier this month.

When asked about this week’s second anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, the former president walked away, according to The Palm Beach Post.

The party comes after the House committee investigating the insurrection last month released its final report, in which it concluded that Trump was the “central cause” of that day’s events, and unveiled four criminal referrals against the former president. The committee recommended that the Department of Justice (DOJ) investigate Trump for inciting an insurrection, conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to make a false statement and obstruction of an official proceeding.

In addition to its own probe into Jan. 6, the DOJ is also conducting an investigation into the potential mishandling of government documents at Mar-a-Lago. The FBI conducted a raid of the property in August during which it said it recovered more than one hundred classified records.

Trump slammed the FBI while speaking to a reporter at the party, according to Newsweek, saying, “I think it’s a disgrace what’s happening with the FBI and with the weaponization of justice. There’s never been anything like this and it is disgraceful.”

New BMW 7-Series Tries On The Faces Of Its Predecessors

Carscoops

This story contains renderings created by Thanos Pappas for CarScoops that are neither related to nor endorsed by BMW.

The BMW 7-Series is one of the most widely recognized luxury sedans as a direct competitor to the rival Mercedes S-Class. From a grand total of seven generations, some 7ers are considered stunning, and others polarizing. According to most people, the brand-new 2023 BMW 7-Series is not one of the lookers, which is why we decided to face-swap it with some of its predecessors.

Our goal was to discover if an older front end looks better combined with the latest body. Among the seven generations, we chose the original and now-classic E23 (1977-1986), the gorgeous E38 (1994-2001), and the controversial E65 (2001-2008) to balance things up a little bit.

E23 (1977-1986)

Let’s start with the first generation of the 7-Series that debuted in 1977 replacing the older E3 sedans at the top of the BMW range. The size difference between the classic sedan and the new 7-Series is as massive as the 45-year gap that separates them. In fact, the first gen is 531 mm (20.9 inches) shorter, 150 mm (5.9 inches) narrower, and 114 mm (4.5 inches) lower than the current seventh gen. This makes it harder to swap parts between the two, although we tried our best.

The shark nose of the E23 penned by Paul Bracq and Manfred Rennen is compatible with the long bonnet of the G70, but the thin bumper needed quite an extension, which is why we kept the lower portion of the modern car. The quad round headlights, the ultra-thin kidney grille, the chrome accents, and the retro alloy wheels complete the conversion. The latter have been adjusted in diameter to match the tire size of the new 7-Series, since the old model’s wheels were tiny in comparison.

E38 (1994-2001)

For the next face swap, we skipped the admittedly great-looking E32 (1986-1994) and went straight up to the E38 (1994-2001) which is considered by some as the peak of the 7 Series in terms of exterior styling. The model, penned by Boyke Boyer, is known for its slim silhouette and sharp styling cues that dictated the looks of the entire BMW range in the following period. For our render we choose the front end of the facelifted version that appeared in 1998 with slightly revised headlights.

The result is surprisingly neat, again with a little adjustment in terms of the size of the front clip. Thankfully BMW designers kept the Hoffmeister’s kink and the horizontal character line on the profile of the new 7-Series which makes it more compatible with the timeless design of the third-gen model. The ’90s wheels also help with the transition, while a similarly revised tail would probably result in a legitimate reverse restomod.

E65 (2001-2008)

The E65 is easily the most talked-about generation of the 7-Series so we couldn’t ignore it. Designed by Adrian van Hooydonk under the direction of Chris Bangle, it represented a significant departure from its predecessor in terms of styling, size, and proportions. Despite the hate it received from hardcore BMW fans, the E65 proved to be a sales hit. Today, some people find it has matured pretty nicely, since it doesn’t look out of place among modern vehicles.

For our conversion, we opted for the front end of the original instead of the softer and more mainstream 2005 facelift. The then-unconventional headlights with the indicators above the main beams look simple compared to today’s LED units, the kidney grille looks tiny in comparison, and the bumper is minimalist to say the least. Overall, it feels like we fixed the design of the E65 instead of the G70, by eliminating the Bangle butt.

Read: Dealer Brings Together Seven Generations Of The BMW 7-Series

The faces of the 7 Series that followed – the F01 (2008-2015) and the G11 (2015-2022) – wouldn’t look that much different combined with the profile of the current G70 which is why we skipped them.

G70 (2022-present)

So we wrap things up with the photo of the current G70 generation which was the starting point for today’s face-swapping session. As you can see, the grille is larger than ever, accompanied by the new split headlights and the rather complex bumper intakes. The fully electric i7 is differentiated from the ICE-powered sibling with redesigned bumpers, but overall it still looks like a 7-Series.

BMW design boss Domagoj Dukec made it clear that polarizing styling is one of the major selling points for its models. Thus, unlike other automakers who rely on evolution rather than revolution, BMW won’t be using tried-and-tested styling cues for its future range. Our renderings might be far from this strategy but if you had the power to choose as the CEO of the Bavarian automaker, which one would you send as a brief to the designers for the next update of the 7-Series?

Blinken Discusses US-China Relationship in Call With China’s Qin

USA – Voice of America

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with incoming Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang over the phone Sunday, Blinken said on Twitter, after China last week appointed its ambassador to the United States to be its new foreign minister.

Blinken said he discussed the U.S.-China relationship and maintaining open lines of communication in his phone call with Qin.

China on Friday appointed Qin, its ambassador to the United States and a trusted aide of President Xi Jinping, to be its new foreign minister, as Beijing and Washington seek to stabilize rocky relations.

Qin, 56, replaces Wang Yi, who had been foreign minister for the past decade. Wang, 69, was promoted to the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party in October and is expected to play a bigger role in Chinese foreign policy.

Though Qin sounded optimistic about U.S.-China relations during his relatively brief, 17-month stint as ambassador in Washington – his predecessor had held the post for eight years – his tenure nonetheless coincided with deteriorating ties between the two superpowers.

Wang’s stint as foreign minister saw a sharp rise in tensions between Beijing and Washington on a wide range of issues ranging from trade to Taiwan.

Old men helped cause the Soviet Union’s collapse. Historians say it’s a warning sign for the United States.

Business Insider

The Soviet Union became a gerontocracy in its final years, contributing to its collapse.
Historians say it’s a cautionary tale for the US, whose leaders have been in power for decades.
One Soviet historian told Insider these US politicians “seem to hold on to office like grim death.”
Read more from Insider’s “Red, White, and Gray” series.

President Ronald Reagan once joked that Soviet leaders “kept dying” on him during his first few years in office.

Though Reagan at the time was the oldest president to ever enter the White House — he was 69 at his inauguration in 1981 — the US didn’t hold a candle to the Soviets when it came to geriatric leaders.

In 1981, the average age of the powerful 14-man Politburo that ruled over the USSR was 69 — a solid 13 years more senior than the average age of Reagan’s Cabinet that same year.

And Reagan was right: Soviet leaders had consistently died on the job. Leonid Brezhnev, who led the USSR for 18 years, died at 75 in 1982. He was followed by Yuri Andropov, who died in 1984 at 69. Andropov’s successor, Konstantin Chernenko, died in 1985 at 73.

Fast-forward to 2022.

The United States’ leadership has more parallels with the latter days of the USSR than those leaders might care to admit. President Joe Biden is 80. His predecessor, Donald Trump, entered office at 70 and six years later is considered a frontrunner for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is 82. The average age in the Senate is 63, and the average age in the House is 58. Meanwhile, the median age in the US is 38. When it comes to age, Congress is not especially representative of the general population.

Yelena Biberman, a political scientist and senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s South Asia Center, told Insider that the age of an individual politician should be inconsequential because “mental and physical acuity varies greatly between individuals at old age.” But she added that it’s “very concerning” when there’s “an entire cohort of very old politicians at the highest levels of the federal government.”

During the final decades of the USSR, its corrupt, aging leaders embraced policies that derailed the Soviet economy as they continued to live in opulence. They refused to embrace large-scale changes and helped set the next generation up for failure.

Historians and political scientists say the Soviet Union’s morphing into a gerontocracy toward its end contributed to its demise, arguing that this serves as a cautionary tale for other countries — particularly the US, at a time when many of its top leaders are well beyond the age of retirement typical in other fields.

Insider’s “Red, White, and Gray” series explores the costs, benefits, and dangers of life in a democracy helmed by those of advanced age, where issues of profound importance to the nation’s youth and future — technology, civil rights, energy, the environment — are largely in the hands of those whose primes have passed.

Recent history from across oceans offers insight.

‘Detached’

The Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev in Moscow on May 9, 1981.

When Mikhail Gorbachev came to power in 1985, he was the fourth leader the Soviet Union had seen in three years. At 54, he was also the youngest Soviet leader in years. Within six years, he would oversee the downfall of a superpower.

In the 1970s and 1980s, the USSR was largely controlled by old men who were increasingly detached from the public and whose calcified rule left Gorbachev with a mountain of problems that he ultimately failed to overcome. Gorbachev desperately tried to reform the Soviet system via perestroika and glasnost, vying to pump life into the stagnant economy by introducing elements of free-market capitalism while opening the door to increased freedom of expression and freedom of the press.

But the changes could not repair the damage. As Gorbachev put it in his resignation address in December 1991, “the old system collapsed before the new one had time to begin working, and the crisis in the society became even more acute.”

Biberman, a Russia scholar who’s an associate professor at Skidmore College, said the Soviet gerontocracy wasn’t the main reason the USSR dissolved but was intrinsically tied to the problems underpinning the collapse.

Economic stagnation and “unsustainable levels of military spending” were probably far more to blame, Biberman said, but there was also a general sense that “the world-historical mission that motivated the early cadres of the Soviet state” wasn’t worth believing in anymore. It made Soviet politics “a very stale affair which didn’t inspire the younger generations and ossified the ruling caste in place,” Biberman said.

Biberman pointed to similarities in the US system now.

“There is an aging — and already quite old — cadre of American politicians at the federal level who seem to hold on to office like grim death,” Biberman said, adding that this “stagnant caste” of US politicians has been “quite detached from the material concerns of ordinary citizens since perhaps the end of the Cold War.”

Much like the Soviet Union’s leaders, these politicians — on both sides of the aisle — aren’t offering society much in the way of “new ideas or political motivation,” Biberman added.

Susan Grunewald, a historian of the Soviet Union at Louisiana State University, told Insider that she’d be hesitant to directly compare the US and USSR but that “you can certainly see parallels.”

“It doesn’t matter whether it’s the Soviet Union or the United States — there’s always a clash” between older and younger generations, Grunewald said.

The older generation is grounded in years of experience and years in power, meaning those people “don’t necessarily want to change or radically alter the status quo,” Grunewald said. “And the youth has a different life experience. They have different approaches. They look at everything with a different perspective. And so naturally there’s going to be a disagreement.”

‘They clung to power’

Vladislav Zubok, a top Soviet historian at the London School of Economics who grew up in the USSR, told Insider that there was no single thing that led to the fall of the Soviet Union. But he emphasized that during that era of gerontocracy, “we were all aware of something going deeply wrong.”

“It looked like the generation of Brezhnev, Andropov, Chernenko, and all of them — they clung to power. They were afraid to let it go,” said Zubok, the author of “Collapse: The Fall of the Soviet Union.”

The Soviet government in those days was a subject of ridicule, Zubok said. “When people began to realize, for instance, that Brezhnev couldn’t quite speak properly, he quickly became a comical person,” he added.

Brezhnev’s health took a turn for the worse after a stroke in 1976, but he remained in power for years. The historian Roy Medvedev claimed in 1988 that Brezhnev had suffered clinical death in 1976 and went on to rule in a daze for the rest of his tenure.

“Many people in his entourage who were influential but totally wallowing in corruption needed Brezhnev to appear from time to time in public as at least a formal head of state. They literally led him around by the hand,” Medvedev said at the time.

Zubok said the Soviet gerontocracy was largely derived from the generation who fought World War II and felt they had a “special credibility” to rule, but by clogging up the system for so long they made it difficult to prepare the leaders of tomorrow. They also resisted reforms that might have improved citizens’ quality of life, a period that Gorbachev called the “era of stagnation.”

By the time Gorbachev took over, Zubok said, he’d “inherited so many systemic problems converging at the same time.”

Gorbachev’s lack of experience created within him the impression that he was there to change history and made him more willing to take risks, Zubok said, adding: “He began to experiment without sufficient knowledge of how these experiments might backfire but with great idealism. And that did become a central factor in the demise of the Soviet Union.”

‘Pernicious role of money’

People hold signs and cheer during a rally calling for an end to corporate money in politics on January 21, 2015, in Washington, DC.

Though the political systems of the US and the USSR are drastically different, Zubok underscored that what happened in the Soviet Union still serves as a warning. The fact the US is a democracy makes it even “more painful” to see it move toward being gerontocratic, Zubok said, laying much of the blame on the “pernicious role of money” in the seemingly nonstop cycle of elections.

With no congressional term limits, incumbents in Congress are offered ample opportunity to consolidate power and influence. This often translates to congressional incumbents raising more money than their opponents and helps explain why they win most races each election.

For the past 40 years, incumbent reelection rates in the US House have hovered between 85% and 98%, according to the nonpartisan research organization OpenSecrets. In the Senate, reelection rates for officeholders have ranged from 75% to 96%. And while some lawmakers choose to quit in their primes, others stay well into advanced age amid questions about their abilities to carry out their duties.

In short, it’s very difficult to defeat a congressional candidate who’s already in Congress. And it’s a large part of the reason some congressional lawmakers remain in their seats for decades.

Even with “periodic elections” in the US, Zubok said, it’s still ending up with “the same kind of people who grow old” in power. Biden is just one example of current leaders in Washington who’ve served in powerful roles for decades. He became a senator at 30 in 1973; half a century later, he’s in the White House. Pelosi, meanwhile, has been in Congress for 35 years.

‘People who don’t know when to go’

Brezhnev’s 75th-birthday celebration at the Grand Kremlin Palace in December 1981.

Fiona Hill, who served as the top Russia advisor on the National Security Council in the Trump administration, said that “of course” the gerontocracy in the Soviet Union contributed to its ruin.

But she also cautioned against writing off the elderly or succumbing to ageism, saying that “some of our greatest thinkers have come into their own late in life.”

Even so, Hill said that in the US, some groups seem to “have been bypassed in the political system,” and Americans have to ask why that is.

Joe Biden in 1978, when he was a US senator representing Delaware.

Hill said the issue with politicians like Biden is not so much their age but how long they’ve been in power, which is why many voters turned against political dynasties like the Bush family or the Clintons in recent election cycles. “People were looking for something fresh and new,” she said, emphasizing that the problem is the “ossification of the system.”

Political institutions in the US “just seem to be dominated by people who don’t know when to go” and appear to view their positions as “lifetime appointments,” Hill said, creating the perception that it’s “an arena that is so out of touch with reality, and increasingly so.”

A system with clogged arteries

A gerontocratic government is not necessarily an inherent sign of democratic decline — but in a country like the US, it can point to deep flaws in the system.

“The American gerontocracy is composed of a group that has for decades refused to relinquish power,” Biberman said. “A healthy mix of generations in political office would have its advantages.”

Countries with younger leaders have been applauded for their approaches to major issues. Finland, led by Prime Minister Sanna Marin, 36, was ranked the happiest country in the world for the fifth consecutive year in 2022. As economic powerhouses with older leaders like the US struggled with their responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, New Zealand’s prime minister, Jacinda Ardern, 42, was lauded for her measured approach that helped prevent the virus’ spread.

Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin arrives for a European Union summit in Brussels on July 17, 2020.

That’s not to say that countries with older leaders cannot be innovative or that nations with young leaders are always prosperous. But there are few examples in the past century of countries ruled by a gerontocracy where the leadership adopted reforms that increased economic competitiveness or improved their citizens’ quality of life.

Now, countries with older leaders clinging to power tend to be autocratic. The Chinese leader Xi Jinping, for example, turned 69 in June, breaking the customary age limit of 68 for top leaders in the Communist Party. He’s overseen the elimination of presidential term limits and is on the verge of an unprecedented third term. That Xi broke from China’s past efforts to prevent gerontocracy is one of many signs of the country becoming increasingly authoritarian under his rule. It’s clear he intends to rule for life.

A country led by people who have been in power for decades — regardless of whether its government is authoritarian or democratic — points to underlying problems that can induce stagnation and instability.

“It shows that the system does not perform well, that the arteries get clogged at some point,” Zubok said. “Instead of pushing new blood up upwards, they’re clogged.”
