These 10 Cars And Brands Have Big Birthdays in 2023

Are you celebrating a major birthday in 2023? Some of the world’s best loved cars and brands are, including Honda, Lamborghini, Corvette and the Porsche 911.

A couple of the cars we’ve featured went out of production long ago, but most of the names are still alive and kicking even after 60 or 70 years in the limelight, which is some achievement. How many do you think will last another decade?

1. Chevrolet Corvette – 70 years

These 10 Cars And Brands Have Big Birthdays in 2023

Let’s kick things off with a big one, the Chevrolet Corvette’s 70th anniversary. It’s fair to say that the Vette didn’t get off to the best start. GM came close to axing the whole project in the early years, yet in 2023 the now mid-engined Corvette is in arguably its best shape ever (if not actually the best-shaped Corvette ever). Demand for the base car is still massive, the Z06 is a real supercar killer, and there’s so much more to come, including hybrids, an EV, and allegedly a crossover.

2. Porsche 911 – 60 years

The Porsche 911 didn’t officially go on sale until 1965, but the car made its global debut in the fall of 1963 as the 901. The name might have changed at Peugeot’s insistence, but even 60 years later the silhouette is almost exactly the same. And of course the engine is still slung out beyond the rear axle, though today’s 380 hp (385 PS) entry-level Carrera makes almost three times as much grunt as the 128 hp (130 PS) 2.0-liter original.

3. Honda – 60 years

These 10 Cars And Brands Have Big Birthdays in 2023

Honda was founded in 1946, but it didn’t make its first automobile until 1963. And that was just a tiny T360 pickup truck built to meet Japanese kei microcar regulations – not exactly a harbinger of world domination. Yet by 1990 Honda’s Accord would be the best selling car in America and in 2021 the CR-V was the third-best selling car globally, racking up almost 900,000 sales.

4. Lamborghini – 60 years

These 10 Cars And Brands Have Big Birthdays in 2023

You could reasonably argue that Lamborghini as we know it wasn’t born until the fully dressed mid-engined Miura chassis was first shown to the world at the 1966 Geneva Motor Show, but the company itself dates back to 1963 and the front-engined 350 GTV prototype. The GTV didn’t make it to production, but the engine – a 3.5-liter V12 with two overhead cams per bank to Ferrari’s one – did, and Lamborghini has been a thorn in Maranello’s side ever since.

5. Caterham – 50 years

These 10 Cars And Brands Have Big Birthdays in 2023

The Seven sports car celebrated its 60th birthday in 2017 but this year marks its half century as the Caterham Seven. Colin Chapman sold the rights to Caterham in 1973 when he wanted to take Lotus upmarket, and even he’d be astonished to see how relevant and desired it remains today thanks to Caterham’s nurturing and the rightness of the original design.

6. Chrysler Minivans – 40 years

These 10 Cars And Brands Have Big Birthdays in 2023

In today’s SUV-obsessed age it’s easy to forget what a massive deal minivans used to be – particularly the Chryslers that helped kick-start the craze. The Voyager was Plymouth’s version of the groundbreaking Chrysler S-series minivan that launched in late 1983, and while the Plymouth name died over 20 years ago, the Voyager badge and Chrysler’s minivan is still going strong. Today, the Chrysler-branded minivan goes by the Pacifica name, but fleet customers get a basic version sold as a Voyager.

7. Aston Martin DB5 – 60 years

These 10 Cars And Brands Have Big Birthdays in 2023

The DB5 was only in production for a couple of years after its 1963 launch, and actually wasn’t much different from the DB4 Series V, the main upgrade being a straight-six enlarged from 3.7 to 4.0-liters. But it’s become such an icon thanks to its association with the James Bond franchise that you just know Aston will be planning some of its own 60th anniversary celebrations this year.

8. Cadillac Escalade – 25 years

These 10 Cars And Brands Have Big Birthdays in 2023

Cadillac only got around to giving the Escalade the high performance V treatment last year, but the basic Escalade hits its quarter century in 2023. Needing a luxury rival to the new Lincoln Navigator, GM put lipstick on a GMC Yukon Denali, and 25 years later the current truck still shares its body-on-frame DNA with the Yukon and Chevy’s Tahoe/Suburban. And all of those vehicles are based on the same GMT1XX platform found under the Chevy Silverado, which also turns 25 this year.

9. Audi TT – 25 years

These 10 Cars And Brands Have Big Birthdays in 2023

The TT better make the most of this birthday because it’ll be its last. Audi is replacing its stylish coupe and convertible sports cars with an EV, though that new “emotive model” will at least be in the same price range, the company assures us. But we’ll be amazed if the new car looks as fresh as the original TT does at 25 years old.

10. Ford Mustang II – 50 years

These 10 Cars And Brands Have Big Birthdays in 2023

The Mustang everybody loves to hate was introduced in the fall of 1973, only two months before the first oil crisis. Little wonder then that sales of the drastically downsized pony car almost trebled to 386,000 despite the car’s distinct lack of performance – you couldn’t order it with a V8 that first year, and even the 5.0-liter ’78 King Cobra pictured couldn’t muster more than 139 hp (141 PS).

How Ram’s 1500 Revolution Compares To Electric Trucks From Ford, Chevy, GMC, Tesla, Rivian And Lordstown

Editor’s Note: This article has been updated with all the latest arrivals in the electric pickup segment including from Ram, Lordstown and GMC

Ram has finally unveiled the first details about its upcoming all-electric, full-size pickup truck with the Ram 1500 Revolution concept, so we can finally compare it to the competition. Set to go into production in 2024, it won’t hit the road until much later than its cross-town rival, the Ford F-150 Lightning, and even the Chevrolet Silverado EV. Today we’re asking, will it be worth the wait?

The last of the Detroit three to throw its hat in the electric pickup ring, the Ram 1500 Revolution has a lot of work to do to make up for its late arrival. The automaker promises, though, that its pickup will be a leader in the “areas customer care about the most: range, towing, payload, and charge time.”

Those qualities should help it compete against not just its cross-town rivals but the new school of all-electric startups like Rivian, Tesla, and Lordstown, all of which want a slice of the apparently quite popular electric pickup pie.

Ram 1500 Revolution

RAM 1500 REVOLUTION SPECS
› 0-60mph N/A
› Estimated 500 miles or range
› Can recover additional 100 miles of range in 10 minutes
› Adjustable air suspension
› Price: Anticipated to start at around $55,000
› Towing Capacity: >10,000 lbs

To start with, let’s look at the new Ram’s stats. Because the vehicle the brand unveiled today is still just a concept that’s set to go into production in more than a year, a variety of details remain unknown. These include the price, how quick it will be, how much power it will put out, and more. We do know, however, that the STLA platform on which it will be based is being designed to deliver more than 500 miles (805 km) of all-electric range, which exceeds that of most of the competition, as you’ll see below.

Ram promises that it will be able to recover 100 miles of range in just 10 minutes at a 350 kW fast-charging station. And, although it hasn’t revealed any towing figures yet, it has said that it will “lead the competition,” which suggests that it will be able to trailer more than the 10,000 lbs (4,536 kg) that the Chevrolet Silverado and Ford F-150 Lightning can manage, and may even beat the Tesla Cybertruck’s 14,000 lbs (6,350 kg), though it’s unclear if the stainless steel special will even be on roads by 2024. High-tech features like a removable center touchscreen and a movie projector, meanwhile, could help the Ram appeal to more than just contractors.

Prices for the production electric Ram 1500 have not yet been revealed, but it is expected that the automaker will try to keep them in-line with competition like the Ford F-150 Lightning, which now starts at $56,000.

2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV

CHEVROLET SILVERADO EV SPECS
› 0-60mph 4.5 seconds
› Up to 400 miles of range (manufacturer est.)
› Up to 100 miles of range added in 10 minutes of charging
› Independent front and rear suspension
› Price: $39,900 base/$105,000 RST First Edition (before tax credits)
› Towing Capacity: 10,000 lbs

› Payload: 1,300 lbs

Based on GM’s Ultium platform, the Silverado EV is capable of making up to 754 HP (562 kW / 764 PS) and 785 lb-ft which should help it get to 60 mph (96 km/h) in as fast as 4.5 seconds. The truck will also be capable of going up to 400 miles (644 km) on a single charge. Standard DC fast charging, meanwhile, should help it get back to work in a hurry.

It will be capable of trailering up to 10,000 lbs (4,536 kg) and can handle up to 1,300 lbs (590 kg) of payload, says Chevy. The Silverado EV will get a work truck variant that, like the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Tesla Cybertruck, was expected to start at around $39,000 when it was announced in early 2022. That price is likely to change before it hit showrooms in fall 2023. Although the Silverado lags behind Ford’s electric pickup, it will have been on the market for a while before the Ram is ready for sale.

2024 GMC Sierra EV

How Ram’s 1500 Revolution Compares To Electric Trucks From Ford, Chevy, GMC, Tesla, Rivian And Lordstown

GMC SIERRA EV SPECS
› 0-60mph <4.5 seconds
› Driving range of up to 400 miles
› Recharges up to 100 miles in 10 mins (DC fast charge)
› Price: from $50,000 (Estimate from October 2022)
› Towing Capacity: up to 9,500 lbs

Payload: 1,300 lbs

The all-electric version of the GMC Sierra will arrive shortly after the Chevrolet Silverado, in early 2024. The pickup will focus more on a premium experience than it will on capital T truck stuff compared to its competition.

That means a relatively low towing capacity of just 9,500 lbs (4,309 kg) and a payload capacity of 1,300 lbs (590 kg). Available with up to 754 hp (562 kW / 764 PS) and 785 lb-ft (1,063 Nm) of torque in Max Power mode, though, it should be able to hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in less than 4.5 seconds.

With a range of 400 miles (644 km) and DC fast-charging technology, it will be able to regain as many as 100 miles (161 km) of range in just 10 minutes. Thanks to a bidirectional charging system, the truck will also be able to power a home’s essential necessities for up to 21 days, the automaker promises.

2023 Ford F-150 Lightning

FORD F-150 LIGHTNING SPECS
› 0-60mph 4.4 seconds (says Joe Biden)
› 230 miles std range, 300 extended range (EPA est.)
› 41 min to charge to 80 percent
› Independent rear suspension, 14.1-cu ft frunk
› Price: Starting at $56,000
› Towing Capacity: 10,000 lbs (extended range)

Payload: 2,000 lbs

Ford now looks like an early adopter (though it was beaten to the punch by Rivian), but that quick start also means that the F-150 Lightning is slightly behind its Detroit rivals in terms of power. Rated at 563 hp (571 PS/420 kW), and 775 lb-ft (1,051 Nm) of torque, its motors struggle to keep up with the Chevy’s and the GMC’s, which are rated at up to 780 lb-ft (1,058 Nm) and 785 lb-ft (1,063 Nm) of torque, respectively.

Despite that, Ford claims that its truck is able to trailer just as much as the Silverado and has a larger payload, which is set at 2,000 lbs (907 kg). Its range, however, tops out at 300 miles, leaving it at something of a disadvantage compared to the competition, especially for those looking to “go further.”

2023 Rivian R1T

RIVIAN R1T SPECS
› 0-60mph 3.2 seconds
› Driving range between 230-400 miles
› Recharges up to 140 miles in 20 mins (DC fast charge)
› Price: from $73,000
› Towing Capacity: up to 11,000 lbs

› Payload: 1,760 lbs

Rivian’s R1T was called a game-changer when it was unveiled, but its $73,000 starting price tag is considerably higher than the competition—though Ford’s prices keep creeping up closer to it. That said, the company is mostly focused on customer trucks, not bare bones work trucks, making the price a little easier to understand.

Despite being the first pickup to the electric party, its stats are still up-to-date. It’s no slouch, with motors that make up to 800 hp (811 PS/596 kW) and 900 lb-ft (1,220 Nm) of torque, and it can to tow up to 11,000 lbs (4,990 kg). Its payload rating, however, is lower than the Ford’s at 1,760 lbs (798 kg).

With a wide variety of lifestyle tricks and an interior designed for comfort, it may appeal to the weekend warriors who are really in the market for a premium pickup. Whether the company can leave a tough 2022 behind it and shine in 2023, though, remains to be seen.

2024 Tesla Cybertruck

TESLA CYBERTRUCK SPECS
› 0-60mph 6.5-2.9 seconds (single motor/tri-motor)
› Range 250-500 miles (single motor/tri-motor, EPA est)
› 44 min to charge to 80 per cent (est)
› Armor glass, 100-cu ft lockable bed with ‘magic’ tonneau
› Price: from $39,900 (claimed)
› Towing Capacity: 7500 lbs std, 14,000 lbs opt

For those who like a gamble, there’s the Tesla Cybertruck. Although it was announced and previewed in 2019, the production version of the vehicle has yet to be unveiled in final production form. The company is still making announcements about the truck, though, including that it will use the same megawatt charging technology as the company’s newly released Semi truck.

With a range between 250 to 500 miles (402-805 km), it should be right up there with the Ram 1500 EV as the longest-distance pickup on sale when it arrives. With up to 690 hp (699 PS/514 kW) and 824 lb-ft (1,117 Nm) of torque, it won’t be the most powerful, but Tesla promises that it will be able to tow up to 14,000 lbs (6,350 kg) and will have 3,350 lbs (1,520 kg) of payload capacity. Despite its outlandish appearance, Tesla has already taken more than 250,000 pre-orders for the futuristic truck.

2023 Lordstown Endurance

How Ram’s 1500 Revolution Compares To Electric Trucks From Ford, Chevy, GMC, Tesla, Rivian And Lordstown

LORDSTOWN ENDURANCE SPECS
› 0-60mph 6.3 seconds
› Driving range between 200 miles
› Charges from 20 to 80% in 45 minutes
› Price: from $45,000
› Towing Capacity: up to 8,000 lbs

› Payload: 1,050 lbs

And, finally, there’s the underdog Lordstown Endurance. Made by a company that has known no shortage of troubles, the truck’s makers have long believed in its in-hub motor technology to reduce the number of moving parts and give it true all-wheel-drive.

Unfortunately, despite the comeback story (the company has finally started delivering trucks to customers), and its neat technology, the truck’s specs are a little disappointing when compared to the competition. It has about half as much range as many upcoming trucks, less towing capacity, and is slower than the rest, despite making 550 hp (410 kW/558 PS) at peak output.

Although the company’s earning in 2022 were pretty bleak, thanks to materials costs that affected the rest of the industry, too, it did manage to deliver a few trucks in 2022, which puts it ahead of a lot of the trucks above.

So what do you think? Which of the upcoming crop of all-electric pickups will win out, and which will struggle for sales?

Rogue Fan Causes Confusion By Applying For Boat And Plane Trademarks On Tesla’s Behalf

Carscoops

Jerome Eady said he was just trying to help when he applied for trademarks on Tesla’s behalf. The self-professed fan of the brand, though, mostly caused confusion, after his actions led some to believe that the automaker was working on boats and airplanes, in addition to cars.

Trademark applications were reportedly filed by Eady on December 28, though according to the documents, the trademark would actually be owned by Tesla. The filings were discovered early this week by Electrek, which noted that they were intended to extend the Tesla brand trademark to encompass electric motors that are “not for land vehicles.”

In the application, it is written that the company does not currently use the trademark for those categories, but “intends to use” it for “motors for airplanes,” “boat motors,” and “electric motors for toys.”

The story caused some confusion after being picked up by websites like Investing.com, because the applications made it appear that the company was thinking about branching out into the naval and aeronautical spaces. When reached for comment by Bloomberg, though, Eady admitted that he has no affiliation with Tesla.

In fact, he claimed that the filing was made without the company’s knowledge. He said, however, that he was making the applications proactively, following comments from Tesla CEO Elon Musk that the Cybertruck could “serve briefly as a boat.”

The fact that those comments led to objections from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources, which tweeted that it was “begging you to understand that anything that ‘serves briefly as a boat’ should not be used as a boat” over a picture of a car in the process of being swept away by a raging river, apparently did not deter Eady.

In addition to making bold promises about how waterproof the Cybertruck is, Musk has also ruminated publicly that he would someday like to work on an electric flying vehicle. He admitted after saying that, though, that he was not in a position to actually focus his or Tesla’s efforts on such a project.

Despite that, Eady still wrote the trademark application on Tesla’s behalf. If you really want a Tesla-related boat, though, it may soon be possible to buy one, because one of the company’s former executives has launched a company that plans to make an 800 hp (596 kW/811 PS) electric yacht. Unfortunately, boaters will have to wait until at least 2024 before they can buy it.

Could You Be *Too* Hopeful? Here’s How To Appreciate What You Have While Still Being Open

Well+Good

It’s a New Year, and for many, that calendar distinction functions as a line in the sand that signals fresh-start energy. No matter whether you’re a resolutions person or have more of a “new year, same me” philosophy, it’s tough to ignore the energetic opportunity that early January presents for checking in with yourself. Being introspective about any number of facets of life and how you feel about each in the scope of what you ultimately dream for yourself can be positive. But sometimes, a laser focus on the future can function as a barrier to enjoying the present. Indeed, being too hopeful is possible, and it could lead to a lack of fulfillment.

In this week’s episode of The Well+Good Podcast, host Ella Dove speaks with Lia Avellino, LCSW, therapist and co-founder and CEO of therapy group Spoke, about the conundrum of needing to be and feel good “enough” can unintentially shield us from joy.

Listen to the full podcast episode here:

According to Avellino, many folks feel pressure that’s both internal and external to create a life that’s optimized, or, some might say, perfect. But, if you feel the need to secure a dream job, find a soul-mate partner, have a tight-knit circle of friends, and, in general, check all the boxes that one would assume add up to a quality life, you may well feel like you’re running at full tilt on a hamster wheel. Worse yet, even if all those boxes are checked, the hamster wheel doesn’t stop or even slow, because there’s always room for improvement when you desire to optimize your life. That’s why Avellino wants you to stop being too hopeful, embrace the concept of “good enough,” and find a sense of happiness with what you have.

“The goal of ‘good enough’ is to broaden the lens to not only looking at lack, but also looking at the fullness; where we might be hitting the mark already and [where] we might be missing it.” —Lia Avellino

“The goal of ‘good enough’ is to broaden the lens to not only looking at lack, but also looking at the fullness; where we might be hitting the mark already, and [where] we might be missing it,” Avellino says. This isn’t to say that being introspective and having intentions to mindfully work on parts of ourselves and our lives isn’t worthy, but constantly chasing self-improvement can be exhausting and diminishing. So, what’s the right balance?

According to Avellino, having hope for the future is an important tool that can be helpful for visualization and achieve goals. But it’s a double-edged sword in that having a fixation on tomorrow can obscure all that we can learn and appreciate today. “If we’re constantly staying in a realm of hopefulness, we are not necessarily connecting with what we already have,” Avellino says. “We’re trying to escape by living in the future and making things better rather than feeling that a full life means discontentment,” she says.

So, have hope, but don’t allow that hope to make you disengage from what’s happening in the present—even if you don’t love the way the present feels. “A full life does not mean happiness all the time,” Avellino says. “Happiness is a fleeting emotion, and aliveness is not happiness… [Aliveness] is feeling the spectrum, the fear, the sadness, the grief, the anger.” To harness hope the right way, take stock of the present as well.

For more of Avellino’s tips and thoughts for how to feel fulfilled and abandon a need for perfection, listen to the full episode.

Mercedes Becomes First Automaker To Get Approval For Level 3 Autonomy In The U.S.

Carscoops

Mercedes-Benz said today that it has received regulatory approval to operate Level 3 autonomous driving function on Nevada’s roads. That makes it the first automaker to earn such an approval in the United States.

The automaker made the announcement today at CES, per Autonews, and the function will be available on the Mercedes S-Class and the all-electric EQS. According to SAE International, Level 3 automation allows a vehicle to drive itself under limited conditions. When that happens, the driver can take their eyes off the road and the person in the driver’s seat is not considered to be “driving.”

Mercedes’ Drive Pilot system, though, only works at speeds of up to 40 mph (64 km/h). That means that it will primarily be used during traffic jams. While that’s not quite full autonomy, it does at least mean that a driver could answer emails or take their focus off the road during their commute.

Read: Mercedes Will Take Legal Responsibility For Accidents Involving Its Level 3 Autonomous Drive Pilot

The person in the driver’s seat cannot fall asleep, though, because the car may ask them to take over control at any time. If the driver does not respond to the vehicle within 10 seconds, it will make an emergency stop.

Although some companies have started operating fully autonomous vehicles in places such as San Francisco, those are being used as robotaxis. Mercedes’ Drive Pilot, meanwhile, is aimed at customer vehicles.

After Nevada, Mercedes said it aims to seek a similar certification in California. Though new in the U.S., the automaker already offers Drive Pilot in Europe. In Germany, it is an option that costs €5,000 ($5,331 USD at current exchange rates) on S-Class, and €7,430 ($7,922 USD) on the EQS.

In addition, to Drive Pilot, Mercedes said that its Automatic Lane Change feature will also be rolled out in North America this year. The system allows vehicles to change lanes while cruise control is on.

Stellantis’ Free2move To Bring Car-Sharing, Rentals, And Subscriptions To U.S. Dealers

Carscoops

Stellantis’ Free2move has largely flown under the radar in the United States as the company only has a presence in seven markets including Austin, Denver, Los Angeles, and San Diego. However, it appears 2023 is the year that Free2move will go mainstream as the company has used CES to reveal ambitious plans for growth.

In particular, the company announced an expansion plan that will see Free2move open mobility hubs in Dallas and Pasadena early this year.  More importantly, the company plans to become the “ultimate American mobility reference” by offering new programs that will provide car-sharing, rental, and subscription services through dealers.

Stellantis and Free2move said this will benefit consumers and dealers alike with the latter gaining a variety of new revenue streams.  The companies added dealers will receive dedicated support from Free2move as well as special fleet management tools for overseeing their vehicles.

Also: Hertz Expands Subscription Service Across The US, Priced From $599

Dealers will have the option of signing up for two different tiers with the first seeing them become a Free2move Mobility Corner.  This is billed as a “first step” into the Free2move ecosystem and it will enable them to offer vehicles for rent and subscription.

The next step up is becoming a Free2move Mobility Operator.  The company didn’t go into many specifics, but said “in addition to rental options, [this] program also includes special access to Stellantis vehicles and increased online visibility.”

The dealer program kicks off this year and is expected to rapidly increase Free2move’s footprint.  In particular, the company aims to have 38 Free2move Mobility Operators and 30 Free2move Mobility Corners in 2023.  This could add 3,000 vehicles to the service as well as new cities such as Chicago, Dallas, Detroit, Miami, and Tampa.

While Free2move has mainly used Jeep Renegades in America, the Fiat 500e is now envisioned to be their flagship offering for “free-floating and subscription car services across the U.S. and Europe.”  As you may recall, Fiat used last year’s Los Angeles Auto Show to announce the redesigned 500e will come stateside in early 2024.

Getting back to Free2move, the company said city dwellers no longer use a single mode of transportation so they’re envisioning a “near future” where their smart assistant will find the “most efficient path from A to B.”  This is envisioned to take a variety of transportation modes into account including e-bikes, autonomous shuttles, private cars, and even electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.  The latter isn’t too surprising as the automaker is investing in Archer Aviation and plans to build their Midnight flying taxi in Georgia.

Does Skin-Care Infused Makeup *Actually* Have Legitimate Skin Benefits? A Derm and Cosmetic Chemist Investigate

Well+Good

Makeup artists and beauty lovers agree: Good makeup requires good skin care. That philosophy, along with a marked rise in “skinimalism,” has led to the emergence of a new beauty category altogether that blends the lines of skin care and makeup.

While multi-tasking products were on the rise pre-2020, there’s no denying that the pandemic’s mass eschewing of full-face makeup days sent the trend into overdrive. Think about it: There are new iterations of these makeup-skin-care hybrids entering the market daily, particularly when it comes to complexion products. You know the type, skin tints that soothe with tiger grass, foundations infused with arnica, niacinamide-powered BB creams—the list goes on and on.

But do these skin-care-infused makeup products actually have legitimate skin-care benefits? And if so, how do they factor into our skincare routines, and can they potentially replace them altogether? To find out, we asked the experts.

Do makeup-skin-care hybrid products actually have skin-care benefits?

“Skin-care ingredients in makeup products can work, but much like in regular skin care, whether or not it actually works comes down to the specific ingredients and formula,” says Michelle Wong, PhD, cosmetic chemist and content creator (you might know her as Lab Muffin).

Unfortunately, there isn’t a clear answer as to whether skin-care-infused makeup can really make a difference in your routine. “There’s a case to be made for certain ingredients, but for many of them, it’s going to be difficult to compete in this space without doing what the competition [in the traditional skin-care space] is doing,” says board-certified dermatologist Ranella Hirsch, MD. Wong points out that it’s hard to make generalizations within the skin-care/makeup hybrid category because it’s incredibly varied and new. And because brands are unlikely to publish studies comparing the effects of their hybrid products to skin-care products, it’s hard to determine how they truly stack up.

As a result, there are a few reasons why you won’t want to rely exclusively on makeup to meet your skin-care needs. For starters, Wong notes that hybrid formulas only really work for delivering ingredients that don’t need to penetrate the skin too deeply. Since makeup is the last step of your routine, it’s likely being layered over other products that might interfere with how well it can sink into the skin—for example, putting a retinoid-infused product over a moisturizer may weaken its potency, which is great for minimizing irritation but may not give you the full range of benefits.

What’s more, specific products and ingredients are inevitably going to offer different levels of different benefits, and Dr. Hirsch explains that anything can be “bad” for skin if it’s incompatible with someone’s complexion needs or if they’re using it the wrong way. While some fairly ubiquitous actives, like hyaluronic acid (a humectant that draws moisture into the skin), are unlikely to cause issues in excess, others, like niacinamide (a redness-reducing antioxidant), are only beneficial at specific percentages and can cause irritation if they’re overused. So you’ll want to keep in mind which actives are already a part of your skin-care routine before layering on even more of them with your makeup.

She adds that another common concern among dermatologists is that people will rely on SPF-infused hybrid products as their sole provider of sun protection, and “the hard reality is that no one uses enough of a coverage product to get the labeled sunscreen dose.”

Is there any reason someone should prioritize these makeup-skin-care hybrids over traditional makeup products?

As you may have gathered, some hybrid formulas are better than others. Dr. Hirsch notes that those made with hydrating ingredients can effectively moisturize the skin and help makeup go on more smoothly, and are unlikely to come with any risk of irritation. She’s also a fan of products that both cover and treat hyperpigmentation at the same time, which means those with calming ingredients like niacinamide and aloe are a solid bet—but, again, you’ll want to make sure you’re not overdoing it on the actives, so pay close attention to how your skin reacts any time you’re using these types of formulas.

For Wong, the chief benefits of this emerging category are simply convenience and simplification—they can be great for anyone looking to pare down their routine, but whether or not they actually work really depends on your skin type, the product, and how it’s being used in conjunction with the rest of your routine.

Either way, both experts agree there’s certainly an appeal to guilt-free makeup application. And even if your hybrid products aren’t necessarily transforming your skin, they likely aren’t hurting it (the way the pore-clogging foundations of yore used to) either. As long as you aren’t relying on your makeup to meet all of your skin-care needs and are taking care not to overdo it or mix it with incompatible products elsewhere in your routine, we say this category is worth getting excited about.

Kosas Revealer Concealer — $28.00

A beauty editor favorite and Hailey Bieber’s concealer of choice, the Revealer Concealer is an iconic product in the hybrid space. The formula is infused with caffeine, pink algae, arnica, vitamin B5, peptides, and hyaluronic acid—all of which work together to brighten, soothe, and plump the skin in addition to concealing blemishes and imperfections. Did we mention its extra creamy texture?

Westman Atelier Face Trace Cream Contour Stick — $48.00

This seemingly pedestrian contour stick does far more than just sculpt and define cheekbones (which it does quite well). It uses jojoba seed oil to improve hydration and strengthen the skin barrier, berryflux vita to boost hydration, and kaolin clay to absorb excess oil and help the formula stay in place. Keep in mind that kaolin clay can be drying, so this product is best suited for oily skin and should be used with caution if you have other drying ingredients in your routine.

Haus Labs Triclone Skin Tech Medium Coverage Foundation — $45.00

Packed with fermented arnica to visibly reduce redness and irritation, along with two proprietary blends that promote calming and protect the skin from stress, this medium-coverage foundation delivers longwear performance without compromising the skin. If that weren’t enough, it also comes in a whopping 51 shades.

Ilia C Beyond Triple Serum SPF 40 — $64.00

This serum packs a punch, bringing together vitamin C, SPF, and niacinamide together in a stabilized formula that comes in three translucent tones to boost skin’s natural glow. While we suggest using this an SPF boost (not your main source of sun protection), this hard-working serum blends the line between makeup and skin-care for a totally unique formula that can be used alone or under makeup.

Tower28 BeachPlease Lip + Cheek Cream Blush — $20.00

Tower28 is known for their non-irritating formulas that are safe for use on all skin types without sacrificing any of the fun and color payoff that comes with traditional makeup. We particularly love their non-pore clogging lip and cheek cream blushes, which are made from a blend of soothing ingredients like aloe vera extract, green tea extract, and castor seed oil. We also love the brand’s multi-tasking bronzers

Summer Fridays Sheer Skin Tint — $42.00

Summer Fridays’ first foray into the makeup category is exactly what you’d expect from the brand: lightweight, uber hydrating, and packed with skin-loving ingredients. Ingredient highlights include tiger grass, glycerin, hyaluronic acid, squalane, vitamin E, safflower oil, and avocado oil.

Charlotte Tilbury Hyaluronic Happikiss Lipstick Balm — $34.00

Even textbook color cosmetic brands are getting in on the hybrid trend. Charlotte Tilbury’s hyaluronic acid-infused lipstick balm has the hydrating power of a balm with the color payoff of a lipstick. It also gives a glossy finish—what more could you want from a lip product?

Tatcha The Liquid Silk Canvas Primer — $54.00

When Tatcha came out with its set of primers, we knew it was going to be good. The innovative, luxe skincare brand consistently delivers, and the Silk Canvas Primer is no exception. Thin layers of silk act as a barrier between makeup and the skin to protect from pollutants, ensure smooth application, and keep product in place all day long.

Tarte Maracuja Juicy Lip Balm — $21.00

Another hybrid lip treatment, Tarte’s Maracuja Juicy Lip Balm is part lip gloss, part lip balm, and part lip treatment. It features goji, grapeseed oil, and maracuja oil to comfort lips, visibly plump, and smooth the appearance of lip lines.

Chanel No. 1 de Chanel Lip and Cheek Balm — $45.00

Yes, even Chanel is betting on the new hybrid category. This stunning lip and cheek balm is made with red camellia oil, which delivers immediate softness and comfort, and works long term to help maintain the skin’s barrier function. The buttery formula blends easily and lasts for hours.

3 Steps To Hack Your Morning Into the Best Part of Your Day, Starting With Breakfast

Well+Good

The alarm clock rings, and even the earliest birds dread the moment they’ll have to slide out from under the covers. Waking up is never not hard… but what if there was another way to rise and shine?

According to the experts, there totally is—and they’re helping us usher in the new year with a morning routine refresh. Registered dietitian Lauren Manaker, RDN, LD and certified run coach Jen Steele are sharing their go-to snacks and hacks, from the foods that give them fuel to the secret behind consistent fitness.

It starts with a simple three-step formula of solid sleep, a delicious breakfast, and physical movement to ease some of your wake-up woes and set the tone for the rest of your day. And if you need some added support instituting these small but effective changes, keep Samsung Galaxy Watch51 on hand (um, wrist). With features designed to support your health and enhance your adventures—like heart-rate monitoring2, goal-setting, and coaching—you just might find yourself rising and shining a little extra this year.

Keep reading for your expert-backed morning routine checklist.

1. A good night’s sleep

Your morning pep is only as strong as your night’s sleep. So as you kick off the new year, challenge yourself to high-quality rest and relaxation. Try limiting your screen time before bed, spritzing your pillow with lavender, and considering how the foods you eat could be impacting your shuteye.

According to Manaker, “certain factors of your diet may affect how you sleep. Eating too close to bedtime may make it harder to get a good night’s sleep, [and] not eating enough throughout the day can be linked to sleep interruption.” For a little help drifting into dreamland, she recommends foods that support certain sleep factors, like kiwi, dairy milk, and almonds.

For intel on your time spent asleep, cozy up with Galaxy Watch5. Advanced Sleep Coaching4 detects and holistically analyzes your snooze stages to help you manage your overall sleep quality better. You can even opt into a five-week program that includes helpful tips, missions, and checklists to improved your snooze. Sounds dreamy, right?

2. A bright-eyed breakfast

Next up on your morning routine checklist is breakfast. A hearty morning plate boosts your body with nutrients that help your brain and muscles thrive, Manaker says, and “eating a healthy breakfast is linked to people eating more important nutrients throughout the day.”

As they prep their breakfast, both Manaker and Steele hydrate with a tall glass of water. “When we are sleeping, we are obviously not replenishing the fluids that we lose by breathing or sweating,” Manaker says. “Replenishing the lost fluids in the morning can help start your day on the right foot [and] help you meet your fluid needs.”

From there, Manaker’s breakfast menu looks like a green smoothie with protein powder and chia seeds, or a veggie-packed egg scramble. But don’t just take her word for it—with body-composition analysis (BIA)5 on Galaxy Watch5, you can track how all these nutrients are supporting your overall health with readings on your basal metabolic rate, body water, skeletal muscle, and more.

3. Get moving

Once you’ve fueled your body with fluid and nutrients, make time to move. According to Steele, “exercising in the morning [can] encourage healthier eating throughout the day, boost energy for the rest of the day, improve focus and cognition, put you in a better mood…and improve your quality of sleep.”

Never been much of a morning exerciser? “Start small,” Steele says. “To stay consistent, make your small goal specific.” And lean on Galaxy Watch5 for motivation and encouragement as you kick off your routine. “Wellness technology helps with so many aspects of understanding physical well-being,” Steele says. “When you can get in touch with those things on a physical and data level, it helps you connect to the emotional well-being side.”

If running is your modality of choice, Advanced Run Coaching on Galaxy Watch5 tracks your distance and holds you accountable to your set goals. Plus, VO2 max readings give you intel on your oxygen levels to help you manage and track your heart and lung endurance.6

And when you’re ready for cool-down, Steele recommends re-fueling with protein and carbs. As you fuel up on her favorite combo of oatmeal, fruit, and peanut butter, reflect on your new and improved wake-up call… and consider your morning-routine checklist checked.

More Car Buyers Than Ever Are Paying Over $1,000 Per Month To Finance Their New Vehicle

Carscoops

There are more new car buyers than ever before who are paying more than $1,000 per month to finance their new vehicle.

A study from Edmunds has found that 15.7 per cent of consumers who financed a new vehicle in Q4 2022 committed to a monthly payment of $1,000 or more. This is the highest percentage of consumers paying this much in history and represents a significant increase from the 10.5 per cent in Q4 2021 and the 6.7 per cent in Q4 2020.

The study from Edmunds also found that a growing number of consumers are also paying more than $1,000 per month for a used vehicle, 5.4 per cent to be precise. This is an increase from the 3.9 per cent of Q4 2021 and the 1.5 per cent from Q4 2020.

It has also been revealed that more shoppers of luxury vehicles are choosing to purchase their vehicles outright rather than lease them. Edmunds has revealed that new-vehicle lease penetration dropped to 16 per cent in Q4 2022 compared to 29 per cent in Q4 2019. New-vehicle lease penetration in the luxury segment dropped to 26 per cent in Q4 2022 from 53 per cent in Q4 2019.

“Just as new and used car prices finally started to cool off in Q4, rapidly rising interest rates created an even greater barrier to entry for consumers who rely on financing – which is the vast majority of car shoppers,” Edmunds’ director of insights, Ivan Drury, said. “Although the last quarter of the year typically skews toward luxury vehicle purchases, this near-record percentage of vehicles that are being purchased rather than leased reflect tougher market conditions far more than affluent consumers shelling out a bit more than usual to treat themselves over the holiday season.”

2,012 HP Estrema Fulminea Set To Attempt Nurburgring EV Record This Fall

Carscoops

We haven’t heard much from Automobili Estrema since the company unveiled the 2,012 hp (1,500 kW / 2,040 PS) Fulminea in 2021.

However, the model is back in the spotlight as the brand has provided an update and revealed the first production model will be unveiled this June.  Shortly thereafter in September, Automobili Estrema will travel to the Nürburgring and attempt to set a new lap record for electric sports cars on the Nordschleife.

Interestingly and somewhat unreassuringly, Automobili Estrema has launched a Kickstarter campaign to “support the costs involved with such an attempt.”  The campaign is seeking to raise $104,197 (£86,154 / €97,863) and it has already garnered $12,040 (£9,955 / €11,308) from 39 backers as of this writing.

The company also plans to produce a documentary that covers the “entire journey from inception until the race at [the] Nordschleife.”  Viewers will also be able to “follow the making of Fulminea” in nine episodes that are set to roll out between February and October.

Needless to say, there’s plenty of risk involved and the Kickstarter campaign notes “As a start-up company, we know that we might not be able to complete the Fulminea prototype and (or) miss the record attempt … but we also know that with our passion, experience, know-how and talent, the chance of being successful is bigger.”  That remains to be seen and the company finished up by saying, “We don’t know yet if our story will have a happy ending, let’s find it out together.”

With all that being said, the Fulminea is slated to be a revolutionary electric hypercar that features ultra-capacitors as well as a ‘hybrid’ battery pack that combines traditional lithium-ion battery cells with solid-state cells produced by Avesta Battery Energy Engineering.  This is slated to give the car a combined battery capacity of at least 100 kWh and a record energy density of 500 Wh/kg.  The company also noted the batteries are only slated to weigh 661 lbs (300 kg), while the car itself should come in at 3,307 lbs (1,500 kg).

If everything pans out, the four motor Fulminea will be able to rocket from 0-199 mph (0-320 km/h) in less than ten seconds and travel approximately 323 miles (520 km) in the WLTP cycle.  The company also says the car should be able to go from a 10% to 80% charge in less than 15 minutes.

Automobili Estrema added “initial production is underway” and they’ll only build 61 units that start at €1,961,000 ($2,087,396 / £1,725,827).
