Audi’s Upcoming S6 E-Tron Is For RS6 Fans Who Want To Stay Incognito

Carscoops

The upcoming Audi R6 e-tron caught the attention of our spy photographers last month, and the shots they fired off and fired back to us confirmed that Audi will be carrying over one important ICE RS6 design feature to the electric version. That feature is the wider fenders, which won’t only help the RS6 stand out from BMW and Mercedes rivals but will also make it easy to distinguish from its S6 little brother.

Maybe the S6 e-tron’s ears were burning because this month a prototype of the second-stringer performance sedan ventured past our photo team’s lenses, showing off its stealthier, narrow-body look ahead of its official reveal in 2024.

But even without the fat fender flares, there’s no mistaking the S6’s performance pedigree. It sits incredibly low over wheels that must be at least 21 inches tall, and though the brake rotors are plain, and not drilled, like the ones on the next RS6, you can still clearly make out its large six-piston monobloc calipers at the front end.

Obviously, with this being an EV there’s no sign of the quad tailpipes we’d expect to see on an ICE-powered S-branded car from Audi, and we’re curious to see what Audi will do with the blanked grille to differentiate the S6 and RS6 from regular A6 e-trons, which will share the split headlight arrangement visible here.

Related: 2025 Audi Q6 E-Tron Previewed With 100 kWh Battery And Up To 510 HP

We can still make out some classic S honeycomb mesh in the lower bumper at the front, and there also appears to be some kind of diffuser at the rear, along with a small lip spoiler at the trailing edge of the liftback hatch. Though these pictures only show the sedan, we’re expecting Audi to offer the A6, S6, and RS6 in both sedan and Avant wagon body styles.

The A6 e-tron family is based around the same Premium Platform Electric architecture going into the Q6 SUV and that car’s Porsche sister, the Macan EV. And while the S6 won’t make as much as the 805 hp (600 kW / 816 PS) the RS6 is rumored to put out, if it gets the same drivetrain as the SQ6, it will have a respectable 483 hp (360 kW / 490 PS) that can be temporarily bumped up to 510 hp (380 kW / 517 PS) in boost mode. Audi quotes 4.5 seconds to 62 mph (100 km/h) for the taller and heavier SQ6 SUV, so expect the sedan to knock several tenths off that time and get to 60 mph (97 km/h) in a whisker under 4 seconds.

Daihatsu Shows Its Vision For The Future With Five Wacky Little Concepts

Carscoops

The Vision Copen might have caught our attention, but it’s just one of the five Daihatsu concepts set to debut at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show, which is the successor to the Tokyo Motor Show.

Beginning with the Daihatsu Osanpo, it’s an electric crossover convertible that blends charming design with heightened ground clearance and a substantial amount of plastic cladding. While it shares the same 3,395 mm (133.7 inches) length as the Copen kei car, the Osanpo boasts a taller stance and an elongated 2,440 mm (96.1 inches) wheelbase.

Daihatsu Osanpo Concept

Moving on to the me:Mo, it’s an urban EV, that places a strong emphasis on sustainability and versatility for various life stages. Sporting a boxy design with rounded corners and a 3-seat cabin, this compact EV measures 2,955 mm (116.3 inches) in length. Despite its smaller stature, the me:Mo compensates with minimal overhangs, compact wheels, and flat sides, likely resulting in a roomy interior.

Eating Foods That Decrease Gut Inflammation Is an Effective Way To Boost Your Mood, Says a Nutritional Psychiatrist—Here’s How

Well+Good

If you struggle with stress, overwhelm, or anxiety (ahem… me on the daily), it’s worth remembering that there are some dietary patterns linked to a more balanced emotional state, largely due to the gut-brain connection, or axis. And while a diverse, nutrient-rich, gut-friendly diet certainly won’t guarantee that you’ll be anxiety-free, it can definitely make a dent on your symptoms and improve your overall well-being for the better.

Ahead, Uma Naidoo, MD—a Harvard-trained nutritional psychiatrist, professional chef, nutritional biologist, and author of the forthcoming book Calm Your Mind with Food—shares need-to-know insights on the interplay between inflammation and anxiety. Plus: a few of the top anti-inflammatory, mood-boosting foods that comprise her yay list and which to consume in moderation.

The link between inflammatory foods and anxiety

As Dr. Naidoo explains, the gut and brain are intimately connected before we take our first breaths. “These organs arise from the same cell line in the human embryo,” she shares. It’s no surprise, then, that the food-mood connection—via the gut-brain axis—is robust. Inflammatory foods can wreak havoc in the gut, which can manifest in inflammation in the brain, thus triggering mind and mood imbalances. “Gut inflammation or dysbiosis can cause an increase in symptoms of anxiety. I see this in my clinical work all the time,” Dr. Naidoo says.

Many of the same foods that you likely know you should limit for overall health top the nutritional psychiatrist’s list, but they’re worth recapping.

Ultra-processed foods

FWIW, not *all* processed foods are quote-unquote bad. Staples including but not limited to canned beans, oats, and Greek yogurt can very well be a part of a balanced, anti-inflammatory diet. However, ultra-processed foods that pack additives and artificial ingredients and lack brain-boosting vitamins, minerals, and fiber are a different story. According to Dr. Naidoo, you can typically spot these if they have lengthy ingredient lists (often with unrecognizable and/or hard-to-pronounce names), long shelf lives, and processed additives such as sugar and saturated and/or trans fats. Such foods “feed the bad microbes in the gut for worsened inflammation and, therefore, stress,” she explains.

Tip: Dr. Naidoo suggests opting for whole foods when possible: fresh and frozen fruits, veggies, whole grains, fatty fish, legumes, and the like. “Focus on the produce section, of course, but the center aisles are especially great for budget-friendly items like dried beans, lentils, legumes, canned wild salmon, oysters or mussels, organic beans, and chickpeas,” she notes.

Added and refined sugars

Sugar is added to countless food items. You might not even realize it, in part since it can be hidden under the guise of over 250 different names. While you’re bound to be privy to the fact that sugar is in some of your favorite treats like pastries, chocolate, and candy, Dr. Naidoo cautions that the sweet stuff also lurks in less obvious items including salad dressing, ketchup, and pasta sauce. “The hyper palatability of these foods may initially please taste buds, but they ultimately wreak havoc on gut health, exacerbate inflammation, and overwhelm the body with more sugar than it needs—which, all in all, can increase anxiety and [lead to an] uneven mood,” she says.

By the way, artificial sweeteners won’t make for a good dupe. “One study showed that people who consume artificial sweeteners, mostly via diet drinks, are more depressed than those who don’t consume such beverages,” Dr. Naidoo shares. She also cites research illustrating how artificial sweeteners have potentially toxic effects by altering brain concentrations of neurotransmitters that help regulate mood.

Tip: Going cold turkey on sweets can seem daunting—not to mention unrealistic. Instead, Dr. Naidoo suggests relying on fruit and other antioxidant-rich snacks to satisfy your sweet tooth, like enjoying a bowl of berries with high-quality dark chocolate.

“Focus on the produce section, of course, but the center aisles are especially great for budget-friendly items like dried beans, lentils, legumes, canned wild salmon, oysters or mussels, organic beans, and chickpeas.” —Uma Naidoo, MD

Industrial oils

Dr. Naidoo is wary of highly processed oils, the bulk of which are byproducts of abundantly grown industrial crops. “These include corn, soybean, palm oil, and more. Through processing, these oils become incredibly high in inflammatory omega-6 fatty acids, and ultimately devoid of anti-inflammatory omega-3s.” For reference, omega-6s aren’t “bad” in and of themselves. But an excess of them (and an imbalance in relation to omega-3s) “contribute to an excess of inflammatory molecules throughout the body, especially in the gut and brain,” Dr. Naidoo continues.

Tip: To curb inflammation and anxiety, Dr. Naidoo suggests opting for heart-healthy cooking oils such as EVOO for the likes of dressings and dips, or avocado oil when cooking.

Finals words on inflammatory foods and anxiety

Reducing inflammation—especially by way of diet—can make an impact on stress and anxiety. “By eating to help lower inflammation in our bodies, we decrease the load of ‘lifestyle’ stress upon our brains, and therefore our mental health,” says Dr. Naidoo. In time, we can become better equipped to adapt to duress and thus bolster long-term mental health. “In addition, when gut inflammation is reduced, the function of the neurotransmitter serotonin, which improves mood, and tryptophan, which calms stress, are shown to improve,” she continues. The result? Fewer symptoms of anxiety and depression and a balanced gut, to boot.

All said, it’s not just about restricting what causes or exacerbates inflammation; it’s equally crucial to know what to add to your diet to support your mind and mood with food. Dr. Naidoo advises adding flavorful spices with antioxidant potential to your dishes. Think: turmeric (always with a smidge of black pepper), rosemary, saffron, and oregano. In addition, she advocates for eating a rainbow a day. “The compounds in produce that give them color are actually powerful plant nutrients, termed phytonutrients, that exhibit a high degree of antioxidant activity,” she explains. However, this tip isn’t only limited to produce on the ROYGBIV spectrum. “From the allicin in white-colored garlic and onions, to the anthocyanins behind berries’ vivid blues and purples, a diet rich in colorful produce has shown to reduce damage from free radical compounds in the body,” she shares. If you ask me, the calming, anti-inflammatory potential of these foods is enough to elicit an initial sigh of relief and make your mouth water.

BMW M3 CS Touring Could Launch In 2025, Capped At 2,000 Units

Carscoops

Roughly six months after our spy photographers stumbled across what appeared to be a BMW M3 CS Touring testing at the Nurburgring, a new report has surfaced that suggests the car could launch in 2025.

The M3 Touring has been well received by enthusiasts since its launch and it only makes sense for BMW to want to capitalize on its popularity with an enticing new variant. It is logical to assume that the M3 CS Touring will follow the same recipe as the sedan and adopt a handful of new components, weight-saving measures, and some small power gains to make it even better.

BMW Blog notes that the M3 CS Touring will be based around the sole available M3 Touring variant, the Competition xDrive.  This model is good for 503 hp from its 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder but the CS should deliver the same 543 hp as the sedan. Drive will continue to be sent through all four wheels and like the sedan, its bound to be offered exclusively with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Read: BMW Confirms M4 CS For 2024, Provides Updates On M3 Facelift And New M5

The M3 CS Sedan is able to hit 62 mph (100 km/h) in a mere 3.2 seconds and it’s reasonable to expect the M3 CS Touring to almost keep pace with it. Various other changes will be made, including the implementation of various new lightweight carbon fiber parts and distinctive wheels. The sedan also has a cast aluminum strut brace and benefits from changes to the camber, adaptive dampers, anti-roll bars, and steering. The Touring should receive all of the same modifications and will be slightly lighter than the standard model.

BMW will also make a series of interior changes to the M3 CS Touring like the availability of its hardcore carbon fiber bucket seats.

Production of the M3 CS Touring will be limited. Given how popular the standard model has been, BMW Blog notes that it could be a challenge to find the capacity to build all that many examples. It understands that fewer than 2,000 units will be produced globally.

Daihatsu Vision Copen Concept Previewed As A Possible Mazda MX-5 Rival

Carscoops

Daihatsu has revealed its concept lineup for the Japan Mobility Show 2023 in Tokyo, featuring the Vision Copen as the standout model. What’s intriguing is that this concept deviates from the typical kei car category, instead embracing the identity of a “compact sports convertible” while carrying forward the DNA of the smaller Copen.

To most viewers, the prototype model appears like a modernized and beefier version of the first-generation Copen that debuted back in 2002. It features rounded lighting units on both ends and shares some similarities in its body surfacing.

In terms of dimensions, it’s a hair smaller than a Mazda MX-5 ND, measuring 3,835 mm (151 inches) in length, 1,695 mm (66.7 inches) in width, and 1,265 mm (49.8 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 2,415 mm (95.1 inches). These figures represent a substantial increase of 440 mm (17.3 inches) in length compared to the currently available second-generation Copen in Japan, with the extended wheelbase contributing to its more mature proportions.

The cabin features a straightforward and driver-focused design, incorporating a more restrained digital cockpit, touch-sensitive controls on the center console, and a set of sporty seats. In general, both the exterior and interior of the Vision Copen convey a production-ready appearance rather than a futuristic design concept, sparking speculation that Daihatsu may be contemplating an entry into the compact sports car segment.

Furthermore, the presence of a 1.3-liter engine under the hood adds weight to this speculation. While specific details haven’t been disclosed by Daihatsu, they did mention that it can operate on carbon-neutral fuel. The interior rendering hints at its pairing with an automatic gearbox. Given that this engine has twice the capacity of the 658 cc motor found in the production Copen kei car, it’s reasonable to expect a substantial increase in power output.

We’ll have more details on the Vision Copen during our coverage of the Japan Mobility Show at the end of October.

2024 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 E Performance Goes On Sale With Minor Updates

Carscoops

The Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance 4-Door is one of the most remarkable performance sedans on sale and has received a handful of alterations for the 2024 model year. Sales of the updated model have just kicked off in Germany with prices starting from €207,708 ($218,884).

In refreshing the flagship version of the GT 4-Door, Mercedes-AMG took inspiration from the second-generation GT Coupe. As such, the four-door now sports a host of Coupe-inspired elements that include a revised grille with vertical slats and an element at its base painted in gloss black. The car then ditches the outgoing model’s large front air intakes in favor of more subtle vertical gills. The headlights have also been updated and the 2024 model can now be painted in Opalite White.

Some changes have also been made to the interior of the 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S E Performance 4-Door but they are minor. For example, an electric sunroof and a wireless smartphone charger between the rear seats now comes standard while the carmaker has also updated its MBUX multimedia system. This revised MBUX system has new AMG-specific displays and individually configurable functions.

Toyota Crown Sport Hybrid SUV Launched In Japan With A $40k Price Tag

Carscoops

The Toyota Crown Sport was launched in the Japanese market, as a member of an expanded range of electrified Crown-badged models. The SUV mirrors the sporty design of the previewing concept from last year and comes with self-charging hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain options.

Many will point out the similarities between the Crown Sport with the Ferrari Purosangue in terms of their low hatchback-style silhouettes and the slim LED headlights hugging the nose. Toyota’s hammerhead face is a common feature among the Crown series, also adopted by the latest Prius and the bZ range of EVs. The profile of the Crown Sport is characterized by the sculpted bodywork and the toned-up rear fenders, highlighting the 21-inch alloy wheels. The rear end is equally sporty with horizontally arranged LED taillights, a narrow and heavily inclined windscreen, plus vertical outlets on the rear bumper.

The Toyota Crown Sport measures 4,720 mm (185.8 inches) long, 1,880 mm (74 inches) wide, and 1,565 mm (61.6 inches) tall. This makes it 260 mm (10.2 inches) shorter, 40 mm (1.5 inches) wider, and 25 mm (1 inch) taller than the Crown Crossover.

The SUV is available in 6 exterior shades and 5 bi-tone options. Those can be combined with the new Sand Brown and Black option for the interior. The dashboard looks familiar, adopting a 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreen and a very similar – if not identical – dashboard to the Crown Crossover. Toyota made use of high-quality materials, in line with its strategy for the Crown series.

Designers put a lot of emphasis on making ingress and egress as easy as possible, something that sounds really helpful for Japan‘s aging population. This was made possible by the high hip point in combination with the height of rocker panels and the shape of the rear door trim set to aid leg movement. Last but not least, the Crown Sport is the first Toyota with a “sound-regulating ceiling” reflecting sounds within the cabin to assist conversations between occupants. The equipment also includes the latest version of the Toyota Safety Sense ADAS suite with features like the Proactive Driving Assist and the Toyota Teammate Advanced Drive for assisted driving in traffic congestion.

The Toyota Crown Sport will be available with two powertrain options. The self-charging hybrid is the 2.5-liter E-Four Parallel Hybrid System from the Crown Crossover producing a combined 231 hp (172 kW / 234 PS) that is transmitted to all four wheels via an electric 4WD system. As for the plug-in hybrid, Toyota didn’t give us the specs but said it will offer an extended EV range thanks to a new “large-capacity lithium-ion battery” that won’t compromise cabin space.

The TNGA underpinnings of the Crown Sport have been tuned for an “enjoyable driving experience”, promoting the communication between the driver and the vehicle. For a more agile character, the SUV comes equipped with the Dynamic Rear Steering (DRS) system.

The Toyota Crown Sport will be produced at the Tsutsumi Plant in Japan, with a planned output of 700 sales per month. At launch, there is a single available Hybrid Sport Z grade, priced at ¥5,900,000 ($39,620). The automaker is already accepting orders in Japan with the first deliveries of the hybrid expected in November and the plug-in hybrid set to follow in December. The lineup will expand further with the Crown Sedan that will debut in November and the Crown Estate (large SUV) later in 2024, joining the already available Crown Crossover.

Stolen Vehicle Suspect Rams Police, Drives Off Embankment, Then Hides At Denny’s

Carscoops

Police say that a 26-year-old woman led them on a lengthy and violent chase Monday night. The pursuit spanned multiple counties including La Habra, Orange, San Bernadino, and Riverside. It only ended after the suspect rammed police vehicles, broke through a fence, drove down an embankment into oncoming freeway traffic, and then fled on foot to hide inside a Denny’s restaurant.

According to authorities, the young woman stole a heavy-duty work truck in La Habra. Local news station ABC 7’s AIR7 helicopter caught up with the chase soon after it began and followed it for over 75 minutes. For just over 30 minutes, the pursuit isn’t what you’d call particularly noteworthy. Speeds aren’t particularly high and the driver obeys many traffic laws.

Things take a quick turn though as the driver exits the freeway and then stops. They then put the truck in reverse and rammed the pursuing police officer’s car multiple times. The collisions happened at very low speeds though so damage appeared to be minimal and the cars were able to continue the pursuit.

Read: What Do You Think Caused This Weird Freeway Crash?

That pursuit led almost immediately into a dead end where three police cars attempted to surround the suspect. That didn’t work either though as the driver simply pushed a police cruiser out of the way before driving through a fence to escape. One officer appears to total his own vehicle in an attempt to knock a tree down onto the fleeing truck.

The suspect then drove down an embankment into oncoming traffic on the 91 freeway. That successfully put distance between themselves and the officers but the truck didn’t make it much further. At that point, video shows the suspect get out of the truck, run across the freeway, and finally into a Denny’s where police would later arrest them.

Police say that the woman was already on parole for burglary but is now facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon against officers, possession of stolen property, and evading.

Japan Slams Brakes On Used Car Exports To Russia

Carscoops

Since the escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian war in early 2022, Russia started buying up used cars from Japan in record numbers. However, Japan has since moved to bar most used-car sales to Russia.

Soon after international sanctions prompted many of the world’s largest car manufacturers to stop selling their vehicles in Russia, the demand for used vehicles from the Land of the Rising Sun soared. In fact, Russia accounted for more than a quarter of all of Japan’s used-car exports and the prices of these cars averaged almost $8,200, more than double the average price in 2020.

Figures released by Russian analytical agency Autostat reveal that over 50% of the 303,000 used cars imported into the country through January-August this year were from Japan. At one point, used car exporter SV Alliance was sending an average of 6,500 used cars to Russia each month but business is now down 70%. Why?

Read: Floundering Car Sales Point To Badly Deteriorating Russian Economy

Well, in early August, the Japanese government banned exports of all cars to Russia, except for subcompacts. This has left exporters scrambling to find places where they can sell vehicles, meaning they are increasing their focus on markets including New Zealand, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Vehicles that can still be exported to Russia include the likes of the Toyota Yaris and Honda Fit.

Japan first banned exports of luxury vehicles to Russia in April 2022 and recently added a ban on the export of heavy trucks. A director for automotive trade policy at Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Takanori Kikuchi, says the government is “watching to see what kind of an impact” the sanctions will have.

Reuters notes that mandatory inspections required for used cars in Japan encourages the sale of new cars. As such, Japan has become a giant among used car exporters and companies have thrived. Many of these exporters have been hit hard by the new bans, including Element Trading, which has seen the share of Russia in its business slip from over 50% to less than 20%.

In Singapore, Just The Right To Own A Car Starts At $76,000 – Excluding The Car

Carscoops

Singapore has long been one of the most expensive countries on earth to buy a car and residents will now have to cough up more than ever to register and drive their vehicles on local roads.

To drive a car in Singapore, individuals must participate in a bidding process to obtain a Certificate of Entitlement (COE) that grants them the right to drive a vehicle for a decade. Introduced in 1990 to manage car numbers, COE costs have recently surged. The lowest certificate, Category A for vehicles with engines up to 1.6 liters or under 130 hp, now commences at S$104,000, roughly equivalent to US$76,000 in the United States.

For Category D, encompassing larger vehicles with engines exceeding 1.6 liters or over 130 hp, the COE commands a steep price of S$146,002 (US$106,000). Furthermore, the “Open” category, which imposes no restrictions on vehicle type, has soared to a record high of S$152,000 (US$112,000).

In the commercial vehicles segment, denoted as Category C that includes buses and vans, COE premiums are set at S$85,900 (US$63,000). As for motorcycles, listed under Category D, the COE costs S$10,856 or nearly US$8,000.

Nevertheless, as shown in the list above, Singaporean bidders exceeded the allocated quotas in this latest round. It’s also worth noting that the average income for a Singaporean is approximately S$70,000 (US$51,200) per year.

The tiny nation has capped the number of vehicles allowed on local roads to approximately 950,000. The cost of the entry-level COE plummeted to approximately S$30,000 ($21,904) in 2020 when fewer residents were using cars. However, it has since surged more than threefold due to an economic upswing following the COVID-19 pandemic.

Read: In Singapore, There Are Nearly 30x More BMWs And 5x More Porsches Than Teslas

Reuters notes that purchasing, owning, and driving a typical Toyota Camry Hybrid in Singapore costs around S$251,388 or the U.S. equivalent of $183,000. These prices have put car ownership out of reach for many of the nation’s 5.5 million residents.

In 2008, insurance agency Jason Guan purchased a Toyota Rush for S$65,000 (about US$48,000) including the price of the 10-year COE. He has since sold his car despite being the father to two children.

“As a family man, it doesn’t affect me much as Singapore still has a good and stable education system. In terms of security, it’s still one of the safest countries,” he said.

Despite the exorbitant money needed to own a car in Singapore, there remains a thriving car culture in the country. In fact, a recent video produced by Hagerty revealed that there are plenty of burgeoning private collections in Singapore, including a handful with million-dollar exotics.

Alice Chang, a representative from Toyota Borneo Motors, told the BBC that the dealers were not surprised by the increase in COE costs due to the extremely high demand for new vehicles. “Whenever we have luxury cars, buyers are queuing up outside our store,” she said.
