Kia EV3 Concept Is A ‘Baby’ EV9, While EV4 Sedan Eyes Tesla Model 3

Carscoops

Kia has unveiled two new electric concepts at its first annual EV Day. The EV3 and EV4 concepts preview two lower-priced battery-electric models that the company hopes to bring to market as soon as next year.

The Korean automaker’s extended electric vehicle lineup is designed to provide consumers with a range of smaller EV options, priced between $30,000 and $80,000. The company has ambitious goals, aiming to sell its first million electric vehicles by 2026 and projecting annual EV sales to exceed 1.6 million units by 2030.

Kia’s EV Concepts And Strategy Revealed

The EV3 is a compact SUV that will sit below the mid-sized EV5. Meanwhile, the EV4 is billed as a four-door sedan but adopts a coupe-like rear end that continues to be the trend for the segment. Both concepts pay particular attention to their interiors, with natural materials taking center stage in Kia’s continued quest for sustainability, combined with processes that reduce carbon emissions.

The rest of Kia’s EV Day event focused on the company’s strategy going forward. That includes addressing concerns such as charging infrastructure, making their customer experiences more user-friendly, and providing in-vehicle artificial intelligence (AI) services.

The Kia EV3 Concept

Kia is billing the EV3 as a miniature EV9, and while the design language is undoubtedly shared, the concept manages to retain a unique take. From the front, it manages to soften the harder edges that exist on its biggest sibling, while in profile the compact dimensions aren’t played down.

The side view continues to blend the soft curves and hard edges that have become a staple of Kia’s design approach, complemented by a set of wheels that closely mimic the ones showcased on the EV9.

Inside the EV3 concept, Kia talks of a cabin that promotes “emotional well-being.” As such, you get soft mood lighting, ergonomic seating, and a whiff of minimalism.

There’s lots of sustainability inside too. The seats are made out of natural fiber, which is touted as having an exceptionally strong structure, combined with being zero waste in comparison to carbon fiber. The EV3 concept’s center console meanwhile, was “grown” from mushroom roots (mycelium) using a process called bio fabrication.

The Kia EV4 Concept

Much like the Concept EV3, the Concept EV4’s exterior appearance is likely to carry on into production with minimal changes to the design.

It follows the same complex approach to surfaces as exhibited across Kia’s electric range, but adds a sleeker silhouette with a low snout up front. While Kia’s claims that the EV4 concept “redefines electric saloons” may be a stretch, their affirmation that the profile is evocative of sports and racing cars is closer to being on the money. Just about.

The interior of the Concept EV4 follows the path set out by the Concept EV3, incorporating new materials into its construction. Instead of mushroom roots, the EV4’s center console uses hemp fibers — a plant that grows quickly and requires minimal resources in its cultivation.

Other areas of the Concept EV4’s interior feature 100 percent recycled cotton, dyed naturally using madder roots and walnut shells. Designers also incorporated hand-woven fabric stripes to create a 3D knit finish to the storage area and dashboard, similar to the seat covers found in the EV3.

Finally, the Concept EV4 comes with a new ‘Mind Modes’ feature that adjusts ambient lighting and ventilation patterns. For instance, in ‘Perform’ mode, the driver is given all the information needed for their day upfront. In contrast, the ‘Serenity’ mode offers a range of digital graphics to create a more relaxed ambiance.

Production-Ready Versions Around The Corner

Kia has confirmed that an EV3 compact SUV will be making an appearance sometime next year as a 2024 model, while we may have to wait a little longer for the unveiling of the production-ready EV4.

Both the EV3 and EV4 will likely ride on the E-GMP architecture, which would enable the crossover and sedan to use the 58 kWh and 77.4 kWh battery pack options from the larger EV6.

Thieves Ram Through Gate Stealing 1500 TRX, Charger, And Porsche 911 GT3 RS From CT Dealer

Carscoops

The owners of a dealership in South Windsor, Connecticut, woke up this morning to discover that a trio of high-end vehicles was stolen overnight. Police estimate that the $380,000 worth of vehicles were stolen in the dead of night.

In all, the dealership lost four vehicles: a 2022 Ram 1500 TRX, a 2022 Dodge Charger, a 2015 Porsche 911 GT3 RS and a 2022 GMC Terrain that was used to ram through the gate guarding the dealership’s lot and spare the high-performance vehicles.

The theft occurred at 1:10 a.m. on October 11, reports WFSB. The culprits managed to make their way into the lot, then forced their way into a dealership building by breaking a window, and drove away with the vehicles.

Shamar Mahon, the son of Mike and Tony Auto Sales & Service’s owner, said that the theft made him feel exasperated. In addition to the vehicles, the gate that was supposed to protect them was also expensive.

“It’s tough waking up in the middle of the night to see we’ve been violated,” said Mahon. “We’ve invested tens of thousands of dollars to make sure that this doesn’t happen again. You’ll put in the proper precautions. We installed that gate, but it seems like no matter what we do, we can’t escape from the grips of these criminals.”

Although the investigation into this theft is still active, police said that one of the vehicles’ tracking equipment suggested that it had made its way to New York City by 3:45 a.m. Unfortunately for Mike and Tony Auto Sales, this is neither the first time its vehicles have been stolen, nor the first time they have ended up in New York State.

Indeed, South Windsor’s town manager, Michael Maniscalco, claimed that automotive crime in the area has been rising in recent years. For now, the dealership has filed a police report, and anyone with any information relating to this theft is asked to reach out to South Windsor police.

VW Up Officially Bows Out Of Production, This Time For Good

Carscoops

This story has been updated with the official confirmation of VW Up’s end-of-production (10/11).

Volkswagen announced it will end production of the Up city car in the fourth quarter of 2023, a full 12 years after its debut. The discontinued entry-level model in VW’s European lineup is expected to be replaced by the fully electric ID.1 although this won’t arrive before 2026.

As reported by Autocar, Volkswagen issued the following statement: “Production of the Up and the e-Up at the Volkswagen plant in Bratislava will come to an end in the fourth quarter. Therefore individual configuration of the vehicle (on the UK and German websites) will no longer be possible. Customers can still contact their local Volkswagen retailer for information about pre-configured cars remaining in stock.”

A few days ago, the UK publication reported that the last example of the Up had already rolled out of the production line in Slovakia. A quick tour of VW’s official websites reveals that the Up is still available in various European markets including Germany, Italy, and France, at least for as long as the remaining stock lasts. The model was on and off sale for some time due to supply issues and the relatively high demand.

More: The VW Up! GTI Is Dead

The facelifted VW e-Up!

The ICE-powered VW Up currently starts from €14,555 ($15,349) in Germany, although it has gotten significantly more expensive in other markets like France where it starts from €19,400 ($20,468). Indicative of the market change in the past decade is that the starting price of the VW Up in the UK increased from as low as £7,995 ($9,765) back in 2011, to over £15,000 ($18,320) in 2023.

The forthcoming demise of the Up means that VW’s smallest and cheapest offering in Europe will now be the Polo supermini. However, there is a replacement on the horizon, in the form of an “all-electric SUV for the high-volume A-segment” that will enter production in 2026. With a targeted starting price below €20,000 ($21,089), the rumored VW ID.1 will be the cheapest offering in VW’s range, positioned under the ID.2.

12 Years Of Urban Adventures

The VW Up was originally introduced in 2011 as a successor of the forgettable Fox, with a mid-lifecycle update following in 2016. On the other hand, the fully electric e-Up debuted in 2014 and got facelifted in 2019 receiving a significantly larger battery pack for a longer range. The most powerful version of the city car was the discontinued VW Up GTi with 114 hp (85 kW / 115 PS) from a turbocharged 1.0-liter engine that was exclusively mated to a 6-speed manual. Other notable versions include the adventurous-looking Cross Up and the CNG-powered eco Up.

The VW Up is one of the VW Group’s triplets for the A-Segment, alongside the closely related Skoda Citigo and Seat Mii which shared the same underpinnings, interior, and most of their exterior. The little Volkswagen is the last surviving member of the pack since the Skoda and the Seat ended production in 2020.

The VW Up GTi was likely the most desirable version of the city car.

This Is The World’s Only V10-Powered BMW E46 M3 With A DCT

Carscoops

If we were to ask you what is the finest M car that BMW has ever produced, there’s a good chance you’ll answer the E46 M3. If we were to then ask what is the most exciting engine BMW has ever built, many would answer the S85 5.0-liter naturally-aspirated V10 of the E60 M5. So, what do you get when you combine the two? Automotive perfection, that’s what.

The owner of one particular E46 M3 in Germany decided to make a V10-powered M3 a reality and AutoTopNL recently had the opportunity to put it through its paces. It seems remarkable and may prompt you to buy a ticket to Germany to try and sample it yourself.

Limited details about the car’s build process are known. The engine bay of the E46 M3 is quite spacious but we suspect jamming the S85 V10 in there was a bit of a challenge. A little bit of digging reveals that AutoTopNL first drove this car back in November 2021 where it confirmed that the V10 is now mated to the dual-clutch transmission of an E92 M3. While this isn’t the only V10 E46 M3 on earth, it is thought to be the only one in the world that pairs this V10 with the DCT.

As you can probably imagine, fitting a new engine into an E46 M3 and then mating that engine to a transmission it was never designed to work with, is not an easy process and requires a lot of work. However, the finished result is truly something to behold. Making things even crazier is the implementation of an aftermarket exhaust system that allows the engine to really sing.

Ferrari CEO Has Already Taken Brand’s First EV For A Spin – And Loved It

Carscoops

We’ve known for a while now that Ferrari plans to launch its first all-electric model in 2025, and recent reports suggest the model is well on its way. The brand’s CEO, Benedetto Vigna, has already taken a prototype of the car for a spin, and “liked it a lot.”

The new CEO revealed that he had driven the car in an interview with Bloomberg Television, which is embedded below. Unfortunately, the EV remains mysterious, as Vigna declined to share more details about the model.

Vigna did say that the brand has a very deliberate process for vehicle development that takes several quarters. However, we know that Ferrari has the capacity to build EVs today, having recently completed work on its “e-building,” which will produce fully electric vehicles alongside hybrids like the 296 GTB.

Read: Ferrari Is Taking Very Careful Steps Towards An Electrified Future

Indeed, Ferrari has laid out a plan to slowly reduce the proportion of internal combustion vehicles it produces. It intends for electrified vehicles to make up 60 percent of its sales by 2026, and 80 percent by 2030.

However, with the help of e-fuels, it expects to keep internal combustion engines in its showrooms for years to come. By 2030 it expects to still be selling ICE-only vehicles, as well as a selection of plug-in hybrid models.

The automaker, along with other smaller supercar brands, has successfully lobbied to be allowed to adopt electric power more slowly than the rest of the industry, and for e-fuels to be acceptable under the European Union’s emissions regulations for the future.

Unfortunately, details relating to the brand’s first electric vehicle remain scant. However, a patent filing suggests that it could be sold with a “sound reproduction device” that creates a noise that relates to a vehicle’s speed – something that electric vehicles lack, and which many enthusiasts associate positively with fast cars.

New Lexus EV Concept Teased Again, Previews Production EV For 2026

Carscoops

This story has been updated with new teasers and information shared by Lexus (10/11).

A new Lexus concept will make its global premiere at the Japan Mobility Show 2023 on October 25, previewing the first member of the automaker’s next-gen BEV range set to enter production in 2026. The company revealed the lighting signature and aerodynamic silhouette of the yet-unnamed concept which appears to adopt a low-slung bodystyle rather than being an SUV.

Judging from the teasers, the concept appears to be related to the Lexus-branded sketch published by Toyota in April 2023. Common features include the sharp lines on the front fenders, the slim L-shaped headlights, and the sloping roofline. The upper portion of the body including the greenhouse is painted black, contrasting the silver exterior shade. We can also see the illuminated Lexus lettering at the back, the large-diameter wheels, and the air curtains on the bumpers.

More: 2026 Lexus IS Could Morph Into An EV In Sedan And Shooting Brake Forms

The official teasers for the upcoming EV concept look very similar to the Lexus-branded profile sketch that was published earlier this year.

Lexus claims that its next-generation battery EV will “revolutionize the modular structure of the car body, make major changes to production methods, and completely revamp the software platform”, with a design that is “thoroughly focused on the Lexus characteristics”.

The exterior gives emphasis to aerodynamics, combined with sustainable but also high-quality materials inside the cabin. Weight reduction will also play an important role, bringing benefits to performance and efficiency. Bear in mind that Hiroki Nakajima, Executive Vice President of Toyota, previously said that the design and driving performance of their next-gen BEVs will “set hearts racing”.

Lexus is focused on providing a fun-to-drive experience in its future fully electric models while offering new kinds of services. Core technologies will include the Direct4 four-wheel-drive system and the steer-by-wire targeting a “linear steering feel”. The BEV is expected to ride on a new modular architecture that will eventually underpin several new models from Toyota and Lexus. There is no word on power output figures but it is safe to assume that an undisclosed number of electric motors will offer more than decent performance.

Back in 2021, Lexus showed a number of electrified concepts previewing its future lineup.

Toyota recently announced details about the next-gen battery technology which will most likely be shared with Lexus. A good candidate for the upcoming model is the Performance lithium-ion battery set to debut in production models in 2026. It promises 497 miles (800 km) of range and a 10-80 percent charge time of 20 minutes, while being 20 percent cheaper to produce compared to the current battery packs. The next step is a High-Performance lithium-ion battery coming in 2027-2028 offering over 612 miles (1,000 km) of range while bringing being a further 10 percent improvement in cost savings. Finally, Toyota’s solid-state battery is expected to arrive in 2027-2028, charging from 10-80 percent in as little as 10 minutes. The driving range will eventually exceed 746 miles (1,200 km), reaching as much as 932 miles (1,500 km) further in the future.

Lexus also showed us a preview of its booth at the Japan Mobility Show 2023, inspired by traditional Japanese craftsmanship and made of sustainable bamboo material. The automaker will exhibit electrification and AI technology that will be used in its next-gen BEVs as it moves closer to its target of becoming an EV-only brand by 2035. Finally, the “Lexus Electrified VR Experience” will allow guests to try out a personalized virtual driving experience that is a sign of things to come.

Rolls-Royce Teases New Bespoke Ghost Inspired By A Celestial Phenomenon

Carscoops

Rolls-Royce is back at it again, and it appears to be preparing to reveal a new, special-edition model. So far, the automaker has only hinted at what’s to come with a darkened image on social media, but it seems to to be a custom take on the Ghost that will be revealed on October 12.

In fact, based on the fuel economy figures that Rolls-Royce was forced to share with this image, we can be certain that it’s the Ghost, since it gets 17.9 MPG/15.8 L/100 km on the WLTP cycle.

Unfortunately, the only other piece of solid information we get besides the fuel economy and the reveal date, is that the car will be inspired by a “celestial phenomenon.” Of course, this won’t be the first time Rolls-Royce uses the skies as a muse.

Beyond the starry headliner it has become famous for, the automaker has released a number of models inspired by celestial phenomena in the past. In fact, in 2013, it released the Phantom Celestial.

Inspired by the fact that BMW took ownership of Rolls-Royce at midnight on January 1, 2003, the special edition model featured dark paint that was meant to evoke the night sky. Inside, the starlight headliner was a perfect recreation of the skies as they appeared on that special date.

More recently, the automaker released the Cullinan Blue Shadow, which features an “Edge of Space Headliner.” Its fiber optic stars were complemented by a hand-stitched moon that was woven into the headliner over the course of two days.

Custom one- and few-off models have become a more important part of the luxury market recently, and Rolls-Royce has taken advantage of that trend. Over the last decade and a half, the brand says that it has started selling more “Bespoke” models than ever, helping to double the average value of the vehicles it sells.

Whatever is going on with this specific model, we will find out at 1 p.m. BST (8:00 a.m. EDT), on October 12. Check back in with us then to find out what Rolls-Royce has up its sleeve.

Porsche Design’s Latest Chronograph Pays Homage To 1970s Timepiece

Carscoops

Porsche Design has just unveiled its latest timepieces but this one is a little different than most new ones introduced by the brand. In fact, it has been created as a homage to the original ‘Military Chronograph’ that Porsche Design offered in the 1970s.

This new watch, known as the Chronograph 1 Utility is made from titanium carbide that isn’t just light but offers great scratch resistance and is hypoallergenic. It is also Porsche Design’s first chronograph to use this material that’s not affiliated with a specific Porsche sports car. Paying tribute to the watch that inspired it is a matte black dial.

The German firm’s latest creation uses its in-house WERK 01.240 chronograph caliber with COSC certification and a flyback function that allows for quick starting, stopping, and resetting, meaning it is excellent “for outdoor and winter sports as well as racing activities,” or so Porsche Design says. The Chronograph 1 Utility also incorporates a screaming marmot on its dial as a homage to the tiger’s head that was found in the timepiece from the 1970s. Sitting above this element is text reading ‘Mankei’, the colloquial name for marmots in Pingzau, Austria.

A number of other elements pay tribute to the original Military Chronograph. These include a TiC logo between the 1 and 2 o’clock dials that references the use of titanium carbide and sits in place of the 3H symbol of the original watch to signify its use of hydrogen isotope tritum. The new watch also includes Super-LumaNova material which glows a bright shade of blue in the dark.

Porsche Design will offer the new chronograph with either a leather strap, similar to the one of the original, or should buyers prefer, a slate-grey strap made of calfskin. Each timepiece also comes with an extra white textile strap with a badge complete with the coordinates of the F.A.T. ICE Race in Zell am See, Austria.

Just 250 examples of the new Chronograph 1 Utility will be manufactured, each priced from $13,000. Pre-orders opened on October 10.

THK’s Electric Crossover Concept Was Penned By Ex-Nissan Design Boss

Carscoops

Japanese company THK might not be widely known, but it is heavily involved in the production of various mechanical components for cars. This explains the THK LSR-05 concept that’s set to make a public debut at the Japan Mobility Show 2023, featuring advanced EV technology developed in-house.

The LSR-05 name combines the initials of “luxury, sport, and revolution” with the number 5 as a nod to the 50th anniversary of THK. The crossover coupe was penned by the independent studio SN Design Platform, headed by former Nissan chief designer, Shiro Nakamura.

The exterior looks modern and close to production, featuring a grille-less face, full-width LEDs, sculpted fenders, discreet cladding around the wheel arches, a sloping roofline, and a Kamm-tail design. The prototype’s length of 4,995 mm (196.7 inches) and width of 1,965 mm (77.4 inches) are very similar to a Porsche Taycan Cross Turismo, but the height of 1,530 mm (60.2 inches) is about 120 mm (4.7 inches) taller.

Inside the four-seater cabin, there is a “stealth seat slide system” which allows the floor to be completely flat. The interior features wooden trim on the suicide doors, combined with a suede-like upholstery that also covers the dashboard. The centerpiece is a single full-width panel housing the infotainment touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, and screens for the mirror-replacing cameras.

High-Tech Underpinnings

The 800V electric powertrain comprises two variable magnetic flux in-wheel motors at the rear producing 125 hp (93 kW / 126 PS) each, and a third electric motor at the front producing an extra 295 hp (220 kW / 299 PS). The company didn’t give us the combined output but the tri-motor system adds up to 544 hp (406 kW / 552 PS). The concept also features four-wheel-steering, electric brakes, and an active suspension utilizing THK’s MR fluid active damper tube. The press release mentions a “contactless power supply system” although it doesn’t get into specifics.

As you might have guessed, the THK LSR-05 is not destined for production, but the technology exhibited by it will most likely find its way into future EVs by other companies. Besides the full-scale prototype, THK will also exhibit a chassis model, providing a better insight into its battery electric underpinnings.

October’s Birthstones Symbolize Transformation, Compassion, and Tolerance

Well+Good

October marks the end of summer and the beginning of fall season, ushering in not only sweater weather and pumpkin-spice everything but also two new birthstones: opal and tourmaline. Each October birthstone is unique—and not just on the surface level. In the world of healing crystals, they’re believed to be imbued with energetic powers that people can tap into, regardless of whether they were born in the month of October.

To understand unique properties of opal and tourmaline, Well+Good spoke with crystal expert at Tiny Rituals Brett Larkin and numerologist and certified crystal healer Joy Woodward about the October birthstones.

Properties of opal, the October birthstone of transformation

Photo: Getty Images/ Panchro Gelatin

Birthstone color: Iridescent
Element: Water
Planet: Venus
Chakra: All chakras
Origin: Varied

Opal is composed of silica, and it comes in two main varieties: common and precious opals, the latter of which is commonly associated with the month of October, says Woodward. According to Larkin, precious opals have a prismatic quality that not only sets it apart from its counterpart, but also all other gemstones. Its intrinsic microstructure—consisting of tiny and tightly packed silica spheres—allows the stone to diffract white light into a kaleidoscope of colors, which change as the opal or the viewer shifts.

This prism-like effect is also what makes precious opal so prized among jewelers, and though it can be sourced from around the world, like Brazil, Honduras, Mexico, and the United States, Woodward says most precious opals come from Australia.

Birthstone meaning and symbolism of opal

Opal is a stone of joy, but it is also an “emotional amplifier,” says Woodward. Whether you’re happy, angry, or sad, opal can amplify your current emotional state—and moreover, illuminate the emotional energies that you might be lurking underneath the surface. This makes opal ideal for shadow work, she says, as the stone can provide an assist in helping you identify your shadows—an important step in the healing process.

What’s more, it can transmute those energies and emotions into something positive. “It provides healing to the owner by boosting vibrations to achieve higher bliss,” says Larkin. Not only that, she says that it can bring harmony and balance to its owner, too. Like clear quartz, precious opal links to all of the seven chakras, working to “pull everything into alignment” and simultaneously “pull out what needs to go,” says Woodward, like negative energy and emotions.

Properties of tourmaline, the October birthstone of compassion and tolerance

Photo: Getty Images/ Lermannika

Birthstone color: Pink
Element: Water
Planet: Venus
Chakra: Heart chakra
Origin: Varied

Tourmaline is a semiprecious stone that “comes in every color,” says Larkin. “Some of these stones can actually change color, appearing green in fluorescent light and red under incandescent light.” While each variety of tourmaline is special in their own way, it’s pink tourmaline that is typically associated with the month of October, says Woodward. “It’s mainly found in Brazil, but also Madagascar, Russia, in the US, Africa, and Sri Lanka.”

Birthstone meaning and symbolism of tourmaline

Generally speaking, tourmaline symbolizes “joy, generosity, and creativity,” says Larkin. “Tourmaline is also a stone of reconciliation by offering compassion and the ability to keep a cool head in challenging times.” As such, pink tourmaline shares some of these qualities, but Woodward says, it can also “wrap you in a loving energy and offers protection and freedom from worry and negativity.” In this way, one might think of pink tourmaline as a force field powered by love.

“I always like to think you’re putting yourself in a bubble of pink, sparkly light when you’ve got a pink tourmaline,” says Woodward. “It can repair cracks, tears, and holes in your aura to offer you that protection.” In the same way that tourmaline in general can help users cultivate more compassion and keep a cool head, pink tourmaline can also help direct a user’s energy towards kindness and tolerance while preventing impulsive reactions.

Given that a loving energy is at the core of pink tourmaline, it also corresponds to the heart chakra. It can help open you to receiving and giving love, says Woodward, as well as heal emotional wounds and old issues that can weigh heavily on the heart.

With these in mind, it’s clear that opal and pink tourmaline have unique properties, but both can be beneficial to anyone who wants to harness their energetic powers. According to Larkin, they can be great stones for Libras and Scorpios born in October, and opal and tourmaline can even work synergistically to support these zodiac signs, says Larkin.

Think of Libra, for instance. “Although Libras have many strengths, including their passion for making sure that those around them are happy, one of their significant weaknesses is avoiding conflict, causing them to feel burnt out,” she says. “However, opal’s ability to bring harmony, paired with tourmaline’s reconciliation traits, can help Libras face conflict healthily by allowing them to keep calm when having difficult conversations and resolving problems.”

According to Larkin, indecisiveness is another one of Libra’s traits that the October birthstones can help bring into balance. “Libras can often be indecisive, so clarity and guidance from opal, on top of the wisdom from tourmaline, can keep them grounded and help them make decisions under pressure,” she says.

As for Scorpio, Larkin says that they can temper the zodiac sign’s vindictive side. “Scorpios are known for being incredibly loyal, but their weakness lies within their strong personality, which can cause them to be vengeful,” she says. “As opal is excellent for providing balance, this can help Scorpios to stabilize their emotions and deal with them fairly instead of being resentful, while tourmaline can help them find compassion in times of conflict and prevent them from resorting to extreme measures.”

Another one of Scorpio’s traits is stubbornness—and they can cling to feelings of anger or resentment when wronged. Opal and tourmaline can help overcome these feelings. “Opal’s harmonic traits and tourmaline’s ability to aid reconciliation can help Scorpios find forgiveness and make amends with loved ones,” says Larkin.

What are birthstones?

Birthstones are gemstones that represent a person’s birth month or zodiac sign. Their origins are believed to trace back to biblical times, and the first-century historian Flavius Josephus associated the 12 gemstones on Aaron’s breastplate in the Book of Exodus with the months of the year and the 12 zodiac signs. However, the custom of wearing an individual gem per month didn’t begin until around the 15th or 16th century in Germany or Poland. Birthstones are also found to have origins in Eastern Culture. The Ratna Pariksha, a fifth-century Hindu text, linked specific gems to deities, celestial bodies, and days of the week, while Vedic astrologers recommend certain gems to individuals based on their astrological birth chart.

In 1912, the American Council Association of Jewelers (which is currently known as the Jewelers of America) created a standardized list of birthstones in the United States. This list was updated by the Jewelry Industry Council of America and later by The American Gem Trade Association to include new types of birthstones for certain months of the year.
