HiPhi Teases Hotted-Up Z Sedan That Could Have Over 1,000 HP

Carscoops

A selection of patent images and teasers from China has revealed that the distinctive HiPhi Z all-electric sedan is about to receive a performance-focused variant that will be even more powerful and quicker.

In standard form, the HiPhi Z has a pair of electric motors that combine to churn out 672 hp and 605 lb-ft (820 Nm) of torque. Those are solid numbers for an electric sedan but with vehicles like the Tesla Model S Plaid, Lucid Air Sapphire, Zeekr 001 FR, and a forthcoming tri-motor version of the Porsche Taycan all delivering over 1,000 hp, there’s certainly a market for an even more powerful version of the Z.

Teasers and patent images reveal that this new version of the Z has undergone a radical aerodynamic transformation. The front end has been thoroughly revised and includes a new splitter with large fins on the outer edges. HiPhi has also designed a new hood for the car that appears to have a channel running under a small spoiler just above where the license plate will sit.

These images also show that the potent HiPhi Z variant will rock a set of unique wheels and have bespoke side skirts with large fins attached to the rear doors. Whereas the Model S Plaid and Lucid Air Sapphire are subtle, this Z is anything but. The most outlandish changes can be found at the rear where there are a pair of spoilers attached to the roof and a more overt diffuser.

Technical details about the ultimate version of the Z are not yet known but the publication of teaser images suggests to us that we won’t have to wait long to see it in the flesh. If we were to guess, we’d suggest that it will adopt a tri-motor setup like its rivals and punch out over 1,000 hp. The bold aerodynamic changes made also lead us to believe that it will generate much more downforce than the Model S Plaid and Air Sapphire.

BMW 5-Series Touring Teased, Arrives In Spring 2024 – But The U.S. Misses Out

Carscoops

BMW shared the first official teaser of the upcoming 5-Series Touring, shortly after a set of leaked patent drawings effectively revealed the exterior design of the model. The more practical version of the 5-Series and i5 will premiere in spring 2024, and will be exclusively available to customers in Europe, Japan, and Taiwan – which means that U.S. buyers will miss out on the premium midsize wagon.

The single shadowy image of the profile shows the silhouette and LED lighting signature of the midsize estate that has been spotted on numerous occasions by our spy photographers. Predictably, the front section of the bodywork is shared with the sedan, but the rear end has been redesigned, adding the practicality of an upright tail and proposing a low-slung alternative to SUVs.

BMW confirmed that the powertrain lineup of the 5-Series Touring will be shared with the sedan. This means that the CLAR-based model will offer a wide range of petrol, mild-hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric (i5 Touring) options.

On the top end of the food chain in terms of performance and visual attitude will be the M5 Touring which is rumored to produce 790 hp (588 kW / 800 PS) from an XM-sourced plug-in hybrid V8. It will also look the part thanks to a version-specific wide bodykit differentiating it from lesser versions. Those in search of a powerful family hauler will also have the option of the fully electric i5 M60 xDrive, coming with a more modest but still impressive 593 hp (442 kW / 601 PS).

The market launch of the eighth-generation 5-Series Touring has been confirmed for spring 2024, but you can check out every detail of the base-spec model in the patent drawings below. Unfortunately, if you live outside Europe, Japan, or Taiwan, you won’t have access to the estate, since BMW decided to limit its availability to those markets.

Note that the new BMW 5-Series Sedan has already been launched in South Korea, and will soon arrive in other markets including Germany where the first deliveries are expected on October 21. The executive midsize sedan will make its US road debut on October 28, with other global markets following on November 25.

California Lifts Lowrider Ban Legalizing Cruises After More Than 30 Years

Carscoops

Lowrider lovers can rejoice as California Governor Gavin Newsom just signed a bill repealing the ban on the popular cruisers. Decades after a law made it illegal to cruise some areas in a lowrider back in the early 1980s, the practice is going to be legal again beginning in 2024. Advocates say that past concerns with the practice have no merit.

More than 30 years ago, California lawmakers passed a law enabling local governments to ban cruising. While it didn’t directly ban lowriders specifically, it did tend to apply to them more than everyday vehicles. Now, that’s all going away with Assembly Bill 436.

Specifically, it bans the new laws that restrict the display of customized classic cars by cruising on city streets. Signed National City Asm. David Alvarez is the representative that introduced Assembly Bill 436 and he thanked the Governor for taking action.

“On behalf of the thousands of advocates who supported this culturally significant legislation, the low rider communities and car clubs from all over California, I would like to thank the Governor for signing AB 436 into law,” Alvarez said in a statement. “The law will allow the historical legacies of cruising to continue for the current generation and many more.”

Enthusiasts and their communities across California, long considered the birthplace of the lowrider, are celebrating this decision, as it opens up opportunities for public events and gatherings centered around these classic cars. Technically, the law goes into effect on January 1st, 2024 but some cities, like National City, have already dropped their ban.

That includes cities like Sacrament, Modesto, and San Jose. Other places like Los Angeles, Santa Ana, and Fresno still have laws in place preventing the practice, for now. In the past, advocates for the ban cited potential street racing as cause for the legislation.

Speaking to KMPH, city councilmember Luis Chavez poured water on those concerns. “Completely different. Drag racing is obviously illegal, and it’s just two cars going fast,” he said. a low rider is not designed to go fast, it’s designed to just cruise, and that’s the bid distinction that we want to make sure our community understands that this is cruising, it is not drag racing.” Prepare to see a lot more chrome and flake paint in California in 2024.

Stellantis Bails On CES As UAW Strike Drags On

Carscoops

Stellantis is pulling out of CES 2024 as “part of the contingency plan implemented since the beginning of [the] UAW strike.” This means the company is cancelling its display and presentations at the tech-focused event in Las Vegas.

The automaker didn’t say much about the move, but noted they’re focusing on “business fundamentals in the wake of ongoing UAW negotiations.” The company added they’re “executing comprehensive countermeasures to mitigate financial impacts” of the strike to “preserve capital.”

While Stellantis won’t be at CES next year, they said they’ll demonstrate their transformation into a “mobility tech company” through other means. This suggests we can expect a more affordable and low-key debut in the future.

Newspress

It’s not immediately clear what Stellantis planned to show at CES, but the automaker was originally slated to have a display alongside BMW, Honda, Hyundai, and Mercedes. That being said, the automaker normally makes technology and EV-focused announcements at the show and has previously used the event to unveil the Peugeot Inception and Ram 1500 Revolution concepts. The company also used last year’s show to announce the expansion of their Free2move service, which offers car-sharing, rental, and subscription services through dealerships.

The decision to dropout of CES is interesting as the union hasn’t hit Stellantis as hard as Ford or General Motors. That being said, the UAW is striking at parts distribution facilities as well as the Toledo Assembly Complex, which builds the Jeep Gladiator and Wrangler.

Li Auto Mega Breaks Cover As China’s Bullet Train Of Electric Minivans

Carscoops

China‘s minivan market is heating up, drawing more companies into this expanding segment. The latest entrant is the Li Auto Mega, setting itself apart with a streamlined design resembling a bullet train. This model marks the debut production electric vehicle from the Beijing-based startup, following a series of hybrid range-extender SUVs.

Li Xiang, the CEO of the company, published two photos of the electric minivan on his official social media account, effectively revealing the exterior design of the upcoming model. At first glance, it is obvious that the Li Auto Mega has an unconventionally aerodynamic shape with a swooping uninterrupted line from the front bumper all the way to the rear glass. We can also see a thin LED bar under the front windshield, similar to the Hyundai Staria which also looks like the source of inspiration for the bumper-mounted headlights.

In the caption of the post, the CEO asked his followers to guess the drag coefficient figure of the EV. While this has yet to be announced by the company, some commenters suggest it could be around 0.21 cd, which is an impressive number for the standards of the segment.

Camouflaged prototypes of the Li Auto Mega have been spotted in China during development testing, inspiring speculative renderings by independent designer sugardesign_1. While the production model looks very similar to those illustrations, Li Auto’s CEO didn’t seem to like them that much. According to a screenshot of one of his previous posts on social media, he joked that if the model ended up looking like this, he would kill the entire design team and jump out of a window.

Below you can see the illustrations so you can decide for yourself.

Setting aside all this design-related drama, the Li Auto Mega will ride on the Whale architecture. Energy will be stored in a CATL Qilin ternary battery pack that supports ultra-fast charging of up to 500 kW. This is said to add as much as 600 km (373 miles) of driving range in only 22 minutes of charging, as long as you find a compatible fast charger. The model will also come equipped with sophisticated autonomous driving capabilities, as hinted at by the roof-mounted lidar.

The Li Auto Mega is set to make its full debut in December 2023, and sales are slated to begin in January 2024, with initial deliveries anticipated in February. The starting price is expected to be around ¥500,000, equivalent to $68,363 in today’s exchange rates.

With so many gray hair dyes and coloring products out there to choose from, we’re taking some of the guesswork out of the process. Keep scrolling to see which gray hair colors stylists and reviewers said were truly the best for covering and blending silver hair.

Before you get started, here are some things to consider.

Why is gray hair so hard to cover?

Have you ever attempted coloring your gray roots only to find that they’re still showing after an at-home color treatment? “There are a few reasons gray hair is tougher to color,” says Wendy Gutkin, lead stylist for Schwarzkopf Color. “Gray hair tends to be coarse with a closed cuticle, so it’s harder to penetrate the color molecules. A great tip is to apply color around the hairline first, so it sits longest on the hair to process.”

“The second reason gray hair can be a challenge is that it has absolutely no color in it to act as a foundation for hair color to stick to,” Gutkin says. Here’s her trick for getting the shade you want: “If you consider your hair extra, extra resistant, pick a hair color in a warm tone of that shade. The warmth acts as a ‘filler’ to deposit the color molecules so they stick to the hair.”

What is the best hair dye for gray hair?

Permanent hair color may be the best type to go with if you’re looking to cover silver hair. Semi- or demi-permanent hair dyes often don’t provide full coverage and will tend to fade much faster. Some may not even cover your grays at all.

Is it better to highlight or cover gray hair?

If you’re trying to decide whether to highlight or color your gray hair, Gutkin says it’s important to ask yourself this question: What’s your end goal? “When you use a lightener or highlighter on the hair, it softens the hair and opens the cuticle up. This is good when you are looking to do more gray blending,” she adds. “By using a color that has excellent gray coverage in a light shade, you can achieve a look that brings tone back into the hair thanks to the heavier color concentration.”

Is it better to go lighter or darker to cover gray hair?

“It’s important to remember that the darker the color, the more distinct the line of demarcation will be as [grays] grow out,” says Gutkin. “Stick to neutral or ash tones to keep it looking natural. When you get more into warmer tones it will start to look more like colored hair.”

What is the safest dye for gray hair?

Gray hair is often finer and more brittle than pigmented hair, so you’ll want to be careful about the ingredients in your color. “Always check if peroxide is used in your gray hair color,” says Janel Sealy Smith, licensed cosmetologist, resident hair expert for KISS Colors & Care and owner of Cocoa Mane Salon in New York. “Some grays grow brittle and peroxide may cause added unnecessary damage.”

How often should you color gray hair?

When and how often you color gray hair will depend on your individual rate of hair growth. “Color hair as often as you need it. Everyone has hair that grows at different speeds and has different amounts of gray,” Gutkin says. “It is safe to say that 4 to 6 weeks is the average time suggested between colors.”

If you’re worried about damaging your hair with coloring too often, try using a hair dye that contains ingredients like keratin or lean on root touch-up products between treatments.

2024 Dodge Charger Daytona SRT EV Leaked – Is That A Transmission Tunnel?

Carscoops

It’s no secret that a new generation, battery-powered Dodge Charger is coming to replace the Challenger in 2024, with a four-door version expected to enter production soon after. Stellantis spilled the beans last year when it revealed the Charger Daytona SRT electric concept coupe.

Naturally, there’s plenty of buzz surrounding the model, and now, someone has captured photos of what appear to be at least three body shells of an early pre-production Charger Daytona SRT coupe. For obvious reasons, there’s no information or backstory regarding the images, but they’ve been widely distributed on a number of internet forums and social media channels.

From the get-go, a couple of things immediately caught our attention. First, the presence of a B-pillar, a departure from the concept’s clean design, while the window extends further to the mid-point instead of the start point of the wheel arch. Second, and more intriguingly, what seems to be a transmission tunnel, although there is some room for doubt regarding the latter. The driver’s side also has what looks like a fuel door, though it could very well be a charging port.

Photos LX & Beyond Nationals

Dodge has said for some time now that the next Charger is coming as a battery-electric vehicle. In fact, it’s patented an interesting system that emulates exhaust sounds and it’s provided specific details about trim levels too.

However, it also acknowledged that it is theoretically possible to equip the new Charger with internal combustion engines down the line. As the brand’s CEO, Tim Kuniskis, conveyed to the press last year: “I can put an ICE engine in there. Doesn’t mean we’re going to. We’re certainly not launching with anything like that. We’re launching with full battery electric”.

More: Stellantis Teases Electric Concept Car For SEMA 2023

Apart from what is visible in the photos, nothing else is certain. According to the poster on the page of LX & Beyond Nationals, “We have not independently verified any of these images, nor can we confirm or deny what they may or may not be displaying.” That’s left us with little more than to speculate on the findings in the pictures.

As we’ve highlighted years ago, it would be odd for Dodge to use a combustion engine in the next-gen Charger even if it could. The company flat-out told us in 2021 that it would be BEV only. That said, perhaps the shift to electric is one that the brand has since decided to slow down with a mix of both EV and combustion power plants.

One thing is clear from the photos and that’s the silhouette sure seems similar to the Charger Daytona concept car. It’s not exactly the same but it’s very close. If this really is the next muscle car from Dodge it’ll have some big shoes to fill regardless of powertrain.

The real question here is whether these photos depict the upcoming next-gen muscle car or if they’re connected to something else, such as a SEMA concept vehicle potentially powered by the brand’s HEMI V8 or Hurricane I6. Or perhaps it could be an internal development vehicle purely for testing purposes, in case Dodge changes its mind about offering the Charger as an EV only. Who knows.

BMW, Mini, And Rolls-Royce EVs To Adopt Tesla Plug In 2025

Carscoops

The BMW Group announced today that it has joined the growing ranks of automakers that will adopt the North American Charging Standard (NACS) plug style championed by Tesla in the electric and electrified vehicles it sells in North America.

That means that starting in early 2025, vehicles sold by BMW, Mini, and Rolls-Royce will come from the factory with the ability to use the same charging stations as Tesla vehicles. In addition, they will be able to find Supercharger locations through their vehicle display, and owners will be able to make associated payments through their brand’s app.

“With six fully electric BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce models now available in the U.S. market, and more to come, it is our top priority to ensure that our drivers have easy access to reliable, fast charging,” said Sebastian Mackensen, President & CEO, BMW of North America. “This agreement is the latest in our longstanding and continued effort to expand charging options for our customers as we continue on the road to electrification.”

The decision only affects vehicles sold in the United States and Canada. In Europe, the Combined Charging System (CCS) style plug will continue to be used by the automaker, as its use is mandated for customer convenience.

The BMW Group joins several of its competitors, and a slowly growing majority of automakers, who plan to adopt the NACS plug for their EVs in the near future. Ford was the first automaker to announce that it would adopt the charging standard, before being joined by GM, Rivian, Volvo, Mercedes, Nissan, Jaguar, the Hyundai Group, and more.

The NACS plug got a head start in the U.S. and Canada thanks to Tesla’s early lead in the EV space. Its simple charge ports have also proven to be highly reliable, something that other charging providers have struggled with.

BMW says that its decision to adopt the NACS plug is independent of its decision to join a team of six automakers who are launching a joint venture charging network in North America. It hopes to have 30,000 new chargers in the near future, and to use both the NACS and CCS plugs.

Explosion At Supplier Factory Causes Toyota To Pause Production At Six Japanese Plants

Carscoops

Toyota has been forced to halt production at six factories in Japan due to a supply issue. The automaker’s plants will be down until at least Wednesday due to an explosion at one of its suppliers’ factories.

The production slowdown has been prompted by an incident at a Chuo Spring Company factory in the city of Toyota, in Aichi prefecture. The explosion occurred on Monday afternoon, injuring two workers, one in his 30s, and the other in his 40s. One of the men was taken to hospital for treatment.

The blast happened in the factory’s drying furnace, which cools hot steel, reports Nikkei. The cause of the accident is still being investigated, Chuo Spring said.

In total, the automaker will pause 10 production lines at six factories due to a lack of springs for its vehicles’ suspensions. Toyota does not yet know precisely when it will be able to resume production at all of the facilities.

Toyota operates a total of 14 assembly factories across Japan, which produce vehicles for both the domestic and international markets. The lines affected by this slowdown produce a range of popular vehicles, including the RAV4 and the Land Cruiser.

The incident has pointed out vulnerabilities in Toyota’s production network. Like others, the automaker employs an on-time supply network, which seeks to have parts arrive just as they’re needed. Although the strategy helps cut costs, it also means that plants have little to no surplus parts, which can lead to production pauses such as this one.

For example, production at all 14 of Toyota’s Japanese plants was halted last year, when one of its suppliers was the victim of a cyberattack. Its facilities were once again stopped in August of this year, due to a glitch in the parts ordering system.

If You’re Going To Invest in 1 Serum To Get Your Skin Ready for Winter, This Is It

Well+Good

Even on my best skin days, my complexion has a tendency to be dry and dull. This means that after the two-week stint I’ve just had—which included a lot of alcohol, six late nights out in a row, multiple marathon training runs, and fall weather that can’t decide how it wants to behave—I should be looking like a shriveled-up raisin. But this morning when I looked in the mirror, I couldn’t help but think to myself, “Damn, she’s glowy.” And it’s all because of the new Murad Cellular Hydration Repair Serum ($72).

Thankfully, this whirlwind of a time (… did I mention I casually got engaged in the midst of all that too?) perfectly aligned with when this super-smart serum landed on my desk. After two weeks of swapping it in place of all of the usual treatments in my routine—a risk, for sure—I can confirm that it’s helped my skin stand up to every twist, turn, and celebratory tequila shot that’s come its way.

Murad, Cellular Hydration Repair Serum — $72.00

How the Murad Cellular Hydration Repair Serum works

The product’s powers all come down to its ability to fortify the skin barrier. Any dermatologist will tell you that a having strong skin barrier is the number one most important factor in keeping skin healthy—which is where the formula’s stacked (and science-backed) ingredients list comes in.

“The skin barrier is the outermost layer of our skin and our skin’s main protection from the elements and pathogens—it keeps moisture in and irritants out,” says Anna Karp, DO, a board-certified dermatologist. “The peptides in this product, specifically the biomimetic hexapeptide-9, help to restore the skin barrier by emulating barrier-enforcing peptides that reduce water loss.”

The formula also contains omega-3 fatty acids, which also contribute to skin barrier strength. “They help create ceramides, which are the main building blocks of the skin barrier and help to keep the skin hydrated and protected from irritants,” says Dr. Karp. “Additionally, omega fatty acids also have anti-inflammatory properties which help the skin.”

One of the coolest things about the product, though, is how it works to nourish the skin from the inside out—that is, on a cellular level. “To hydrate the skin on a cellular level means to prevent water loss and [loss of] other essential nutrients to the individual skin cells,” says Dr. Karp. “This is important for overall skin health because well-hydrated skin is more plump, resilient, and less prone to dryness, irritation, and other problems.”
All of this can be particularly helpful as we head toward the colder, dryer months of the year—even if you aren’t challenging your skin with sweat, alcohol, and a lack of sleep the way I have been recently. These types of conditions can weaken the barrier, which means adding a product like this one to your routine can set you (and your skin) up for success this winter.

What happened when I tried it

The first thing I noticed about the Murad Cellular Hydration Repair Serum was, well, the smell. It definitely has a not-so-great odor, but considering some of the best skin-care products on the market literally stink, I chose to convince myself that this was a sign that this stuff is legit (I mean, I’ve never let the hot-dog water smell of SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic get in the way of my pursuit of brighter skin).

The texture of the product is essentially a milky serum—it’s viscous and opaque in a way that makes you think it will feel thick, but it glides easily into the skin and disappears immediately. Right after application, my skin looks plump and hydrated and stays that way throughout the day.

I’ve been using the serum for two weeks, and have noticed a visible difference in my skin. I can’t totally put my finger on what it is, but it just looks healthier overall—less dry and dull, more moist and even. After only five days, I stopped wearing foundation—which is pretty huge for me as a beauty editor… especially considering what my skin’s been through recently.

Going forward, I plan to add my usual dark spot treatment back into my routine (while this stuff helps with redness, it doesn’t do much for discoloration), but will definitely be keeping the Murad serum in my daily rotation for extra hydration. If it can help me look this good in the face of sweat, no sleep, and champagne, a regular day in the life should be a cinch. Plus, winter is coming, and with this formula, my skin will be ready.
