The police are investigating whether “negligence” led to the deaths

Police in Uganda have arrested the high-profile events organiser behind a New Year concert that ended in a crush killing 10 people, mostly children.

Abbey Musinguzi, also known as Abitex, is a much sought-after promoter.

The crush occurred as the crowd rushed to the venue’s parking lot to watch a fireworks display at midnight in the capital, Kampala.

Only one of the four exits at the Freedom City mall was open at the time, police spokesman Fred Enanga said.

“The revellers had one point of entry and exit. Therefore several victims were trapped and trampled upon through the narrow passage which became a bottleneck for many, mostly juveniles,” he said.

He added they were investigating if “negligence” was to blame for the loss of life.

An estimated 500 people were at the venue along the Kampala-Entebbe highway when the crush happened.

The mall, which has an indoor children’s play area and a swimming pool, is a popular venue for family events.

The mother of two of the children who died said she started heading out of the venue at 23:00 local time, but the people manning the only exit leading to the parking lot closed it and ordered them back inside, trapping people in a narrow alley, local Daily Monitor news site reports.

“Many people started fainting and children started crying. My older children were holding each other and got separated from me… I then started looking for the younger children but I couldn’t move. I was also struggling to stay alive. Some people fell down.”

She managed to get out of the crowd and started looking for her children, but found their bodies at different hospitals.

Some people died on the spot from suffocation while others died later in local clinics.

Local media report that the event organisers had closed the other three exit gates to prevent people who didn’t have tickets from using them to enter the venue.

The event organisers have not made any public comment.

A spokesman for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, Patrick Onyango, told the BBC on Sunday that seven children were among the dead.

Police said on Monday that the investigations were ongoing and they are looking for other people who were involved in organising the event.

Other businesses in the shopping centre are operating as usual but a police tape has been put around the scene of the crush.

Vice-President Jessica Alupo met parents of the bereaved and announced that the government would give them five million Ugandan shillings ($1,300; £1,100) to cover funeral expenses for each person who died.

Ugandans have been enjoying the December holiday celebrations for the first time since 2020 when the government banned public gatherings as a health measure to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.

Scandals in the UK: Boris Johnson’s ‘partygate,’ Prince Andrew’s demise and other misdeeds

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

MANCHESTER, England – Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s downfall was just one of many big stories in the U.K. this past year, as Johnson’s time as prime minister was overshadowed by scandal after scandal.

In fact, Johnson shook off so many of them during his time in office, it seemed his political standing would remain undamaged – leading to him being dubbed ‘Teflon Johnson’.

However, the “Partygate” scandal over parties, events and other gatherings held in government buildings, in breach of the U.K.’s strict COVID-19 lockdown rules, would slowly undermine his authority.

Johnson was accused of knowingly breaking the rules, feigning ignorance and lying about his knowledge of the illegal gatherings.

BORIS JOHNSON ‘BROUGHT DOWN BY BORIS JOHNSON,’ BUT WEAKENED ECONOMY DIDN’T HELP, EXPERTS SAY

The scandal remained in the spotlight for months as more details leaked out and became public, with Johnson maintaining his innocence, despite a flurry of newspaper headlines.

It proved particularly damaging because so many families who were forced to follow the rules were denied seeing loved ones who died of the virus – leading to accusations of double standards.

Police investigated, and it emerged Johnson had attended at least three parties, including one the day before the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral.

In April 2022, he was fined for breaking lockdown rules, along with his wife Carrie and then-Chancellor of the Exchequer and current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Johnson became the first serving prime minister to break the law and face police sanctions; his reputation never recovered.

Additionally, when he was accused of misleading Parliament over claims senior Conservative Party colleague Chris Pincher had groped two men at a private club, it prompted many government ministers and Members of Parliament (MPs) to resign.

UK PRIME MINISTER BORIS JOHNSON APOLOGIZES AS PRESSURE MOUNTS FOR HIM TO RESIGN OVER ‘PARTYGATE’

Johnson later apologized for his handling of the affair, but it did little to calm the crisis, and he was forced to quit in July.

Below are some of the other stories making big headlines in the U.K. in 2022.

PRINCE ANDREW

A long-running civil case involving the late Queen Elizabeth II’s son, the Duke of York, came to an end in March.

Prince Andrew was sued by Virginia Giuffre for sexual abuse following claims he had sex with her when she was 17 and had been trafficked by his friend, the billionaire pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

Andrew claimed he never met Giuffre but paid her an out-of-court settlement, reported to be as much as $14.5- million.

The scandal rocked the British royal family and severely damaged the duke’s public standing.

Andrew stepped back from royal duties in late 2019, saying the case had become a “major disruption.” In January, the Queen took steps to distance the royal family from him as the prospect of a damaging trial loomed.

‘BULLY’ PRINCE ANDREW HAD A ‘REVOLVING DOOR’ OF WOMEN ENTERING ‘HIS BEDROOM,’ FORMER ROYAL OFFICER CLAIMS

She stripped the duke of his honorary military roles, and he was forced to stop using his “His Royal Highness” title.

Reports have claimed Andrew wishes to return to public life, but the move is opposed by his brother King Charles III, who succeeded his mother on the British throne following her death in August.

BORIS BECKER

Tennis star Boris Becker was jailed in April for hiding $3-million of his assets to avoid paying his debts.

The three-time Wimbledon champion, 55, was declared bankrupt in June 2017 – owing creditors almost $61-million over an unpaid loan of more than $3.6-million on his estate on the Spanish island of Mallorca.

He was legally obliged to disclose all of his assets so that trustees could distribute available funds to creditors, but his trial heard he had acted “deliberately and dishonestly”.

Becker was released from prison in early December after serving eight months of his two-and-a-half year sentence and was deported from the U.K., albeit in a private jet, after living there since 2012.

BORIS BECKER CLAIMS INMATE TRIED TO KILL HIM WHILE IN PRISON: ‘I WAS SHAKING SO BAD’

He filmed a two-part documentary with Apple TV in which he talks about the emotional turmoil he felt prior to being jailed. In it, he admits he hit rock “bottom” while he was waiting to be sentenced.

FROM PARLIAMENT TO REALITY SHOW

Former U.K. Health Secretary Matt Hancock was already a controversial figure over his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Charged with leading the government’s response to the biggest peacetime emergency the U.K. faced, Hancock was heavily criticized for the decisions he made amid accusations more lives could have been saved.

However, it was his affair with his government-funded aide Gina Coladangelo that forced his resignation in June 2021 after CCTV cameras caught the couple kissing in his office.

Hancock admitted to breaking the government’s own social distancing rules, and he was forced to apologize for “letting people down”.

He was able to stay on as an MP, but there was further controversy when he appeared on popular reality-TV show ‘I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here,’ which sees contestants competing in various challenges in an Australian jungle.

UK HEALTH SECRETARY MATT HANCOCK RESIGNS AFTER IMAGES SHOW HIM KISSING AIDE

It was claimed he picked up as much as $485,000 for his appearance and he still received his MP’s salary on top, despite being thousands of miles away from the people he was supposed to represent.

Unsurprisingly, he was criticized my many, including Conservative Party colleagues. Additionally, some opponents branded his stint on the show an “insult” to bereaved families who had lost loved ones to COVID.

He was suspended as an MP, but when it became obvious he had lost the support of party members, he announced his intention to quit politics for new challenges.

LONDON’S POLICE CHIEF FORCED OUT

The head of the U.K. Metropolitan Police, Cressida Dick, resigned in February.

It followed a series of scandals that rocked the force following claims of institutional misogyny, racism and homophobia.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan later said that the public had lost “trust” in the force, and he had lost “confidence” in Dick to carry our the necessary changes needed.

It followed claims from Dick that she had felt “intimidated” into stepping down.

Among the scandals that led to her resignation was the murder of Sarah Everard by serving Metropolitan Police firearms officer Wayne Couzens.

A vigil for the victim drew criticism after women were handcuffed and detained while other officers shared inappropriate and offensive messages about Everard and other women – leading to claims of a culture of misogyny in the force.

There were also delays in investigating the “Partygate” affair, which involved then-Prime Minister Johnson and other government colleagues, and another scandal involving racist, sexist and homophobic messages shared by officers on WhatsApp and Facebook groups.

Newt Gingrich sounds alarm over opposition to Kevin McCarthy’s speaker bid: GOP in danger of a ‘meltdown’

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

Fox News contributor Newt Gingrich issued a stark warning over the future of the Republican Party as Rep. Kevin McCarthy faces opposition to his bid to become the next House speaker. Gingrich joined “Fox & Friends” to react to Rep. Bob Good, R-Va., and several other Republicans vowing not to support McCarthy.

GOP FACES DELAY IN UNLOCKING FULL POWERS OF HOUSE IF MCCARTHY CANNOT CLINCH SPEAKERSHIP

NEWT GINGRICH: I think the Republican Party right now is in the greatest danger of meltdown that it’s been since 1964. I think that’s true in the Senate. It’s true in the presidential race. I thought McCarthy, frankly, who had won two consecutive elections… they gained seats in ‘20. They gained seats in ’22. He was the singularly most active, best fundraiser, biggest campaigner. I thought at least the House was going to be a sign of stability. And these five guys decided to go out as kamikazes and see if they can’t sink the whole Republican Party. And that’s what they’re doing. This is not about Kevin McCarthy. This is about the right of any five members to basically throw away the entire rest of the conference and tell the rest of the conference it doesn’t matter.

‘Knots Landing’ star Donna Mills, 82, details her workout regimen for the new year: ‘You have to keep moving’

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

Donna Mills believes her dedication to breaking a sweat has been essential to remaining youthful.

The former “Knots Landing” star caused a stir in December when she revealed some of her secrets to staying in shape to AARP – The Magazine. Now, the 82-year-old is sharing a sneak peek into her workout regimen for those seeking to kick off their New Year’s resolutions.

“I’ve never stopped exercising just because I’m getting older,” the actress told Fox News Digital. “I think a lot of people tend to have the mindset of, ‘I’m too old now. I don’t need to do that anymore.’ But I think it’s the opposite. You have to keep moving. I think it’s so important to sweat every day.

“There are days when it can be difficult because I have to be at the set at seven o’clock in the morning. But I think the key is carving out that time each day when you can just sweat. I think that’s really important. Your body will just kind of atrophy if you don’t keep using it.”

‘KNOTS LANDING’ STAR DONNA MILLS, 81, DETAILS HER SECRETS TO STAYING FIT: ‘I’M CAREFUL’

Mills said she’s not a fan of going to the gym because it can be awkward “having other people around” during the middle of a workout. So, she decided to create a space in her home where she can work out any time. She’s also a fan of tennis and plays five times a week for two hours.

“I have a Peloton, which I absolutely love,” she said. “It helps me to explore the world while I’m on it. It’s really nice and fun, which I also think is important if you want to stick to something. There are some classes on it too that you can do if you need the extra motivation.”

“It takes you to many beautiful places virtually. I also keep a set of light weights nearby. Nothing heavy. I’m also a dancer, so I have my own ballet barre to stretch. It’s really good to keep your legs in shape and maintain that elasticity. If you don’t have one, a kitchen counter works just fine.”

Mills previously told AARP that, during her soap opera years, she “never ate pasta, sugar, bread, ice cream, cookies or any of that stuff.” Mills admitted that the no-nonsense approach isn’t the easiest, but it kept her figure in camera-ready shape.

“I keep saying to myself, ‘You gotta go back to what you did then,” she chuckled. “That kept me extremely healthy. I never missed a day’s work on ‘Knots Landing.’ For nine years I never missed a day of work. And I think it’s because I just ate really well, which kept me healthy.”

“It’s not that I just didn’t eat pasta. I didn’t eat starches. I ate mostly protein, vegetables and that was it. I seldom even had a glass of wine because there was too much sugar in it, and I never had sugar back then. I really do still believe that white sugar is poison.”

While she’s relaxed about her eating habits, Mills said she prioritizes eating “clean and green” with a vegetable-rich diet.

Mills also reflected on taking a break from Hollywood. She became a mother at age 54 when she adopted her daughter Chloe.

“I worked the first couple of years when she was an infant, a little tiny thing,” said Mills. “That’s because I could take her with me on set, and it was wonderful. She was with me all the time. But once she started going to school, I knew I wasn’t going to leave her for the movies. I didn’t want to take her out of her school either. So it wasn’t a difficult decision. Fortunately, I was in a position where I didn’t have to work. And it was the most wonderful time. My entire focus was just being her mom. I have never regretted making that decision.”

‘KNOTS LANDING’ STAR DONNA MILLS EXPLAINS WHY SHE TOOK A BREAK FROM HOLLYWOOD FOR 18 YEARS

Chloe, now 28, is a model and an executive at Soho House, an elite, private club for those involved in the arts, politics and media.

Mills previously revealed that her love life didn’t flourish until she was in her 60s.

“I met [actor and producer] Larry Gilman at age 60,” Mills told AARP. “I lucked out. Before him, I kind of went for the bad boys. But when I met him, I just knew I was going for the not-bad boy.”

Life, she said, has proven to be fruitful.

“We have a big hill behind our house,” Mills shared. “Larry wanted to build a vineyard up there. And I was just like, ‘No, you’re crazy, the vines will dislodge the hill.’ I was worried. It was one of the few fights we ever had. He didn’t listen to me, and it’s good he didn’t. The vines solidified the hill, and now we have our own commercial vineyard. And it is just beautiful.”

Biden faces questions over whether he can beat DeSantis

Just In | The Hill

President Biden is entering the new year riding high off a better-than-expected midterm election performance for his party that has improved his political standing while damaging his chief GOP rival — former President Trump.

Yet Biden also enters the new year with lingering questions over his age and his overall political strength — most notably whether he can defeat a different Republican in Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis if he is the GOP nominee in 2024.

DeSantis has said he’s focused on his job in Florida and, unlike Trump, he’s not officially in the 2024 race. But he’s expected to come under pressure to get in as Republicans look for a stronger candidate in 2024 than the former president.

While Trump’s image has been tarnished by the GOP’s disappointing midterm elections, DeSantis coasted to reelection in Florida as Republicans overall in his state performed strongly.

If Biden had a good midterm, DeSantis had a great one, and he’d represent a very different kind of challenge than Trump for Biden — if he were to defeat Trump in a GOP primary.

Cristina Antelo, a Democratic strategist who runs Ferox Strategies, said Biden’s age remains a concern among Democratic voters, despite a string of legislative accomplishments by Democrats under Biden — and his party’s midterm performance.

Biden, 80, would finish a second term at the age of 86. Running against DeSantis, 44, instead of the 76-year-old Trump could draw a different kind of contrast for Biden.

“It’s crazy to me that Biden is polling so low, even with Dems, considering how much has been accomplished in these first two years,” Antelo said. “But, yes, Dems seem worried that ‘an old white guy’ at the top of the ticket just isn’t going to cut it if the threats to democracy that Trump embodies aren’t on the ballot.”

Biden’s rise in 2020 had a lot to do with Trump. A big part of his campaign was that he was the Democrat best positioned to end the Trump presidency. Biden himself said he likely would not have run for the White House that year if Trump had not been president.

Polls continue to show Biden with an edge over Trump, but the head-to-head polls matching up Biden and DeSantis give Republicans reason for optimism.

A Marquette Law School poll released on Dec. 1 found Biden and DeSantis tied in a 2024 match-up, with 42 percent of registered voters picking each candidate.

The poll showed Biden 10 points ahead of Trump, suggesting the incumbent president might be a bigger favorite against his old opponent.

Most Democrats, at least on the record, express confidence in Biden regardless of who his opponent is, though some do acknowledge DeSantis could have some advantages compared to Trump.

“Not having Trump’s insurmountable baggage is a huge advantage for DeSantis, but it remains TBD whether he possesses Trump’s talents as a candidate,” said Bruce Mehlman, a former assistant secretary at the Commerce Department under former President George W. Bush.

Other polls give credence to Democratic fears about Biden’s age.

A recent USA Today-Suffolk University poll found that 50 percent of Americans want a president between 51 and 65 years old, while 25 percent want a president 35 to 50 years old. Only 8 percent said they wanted a president who is between the ages of 66 and 80.

Biden will almost certainly be the Democratic nominee in 2024 unless he decides against a run, or if his health does falter.

And a number of Democrats say he’ll be tough to defeat no matter who his GOP opponent is.

“In essence, it always comes down to can you motivate the base,” said Ivan Zapien, a former Democratic National Committee official.

He said it could be a tougher challenge for Biden against a non-Trump GOP nominee, but added that Biden “has proven that he can motivate the base very effectively and that’s a proof point that I think works to his advantage if he decides to run regardless of who he runs against.”

Democratic strategist Michael Starr Hopkins said Biden has already proved his detractors wrong once with the coalition he has been able to build.

“President Biden has managed to unify the Democratic Party in a way that no Democrat could have predicted four years ago. He’s built a coalition of progressives and moderates that proved during the midterms can be a winning combination,” Hopkins said. “If I’m Ron DeSantis, I would think twice about running against Biden in this cycle.”

Marc Lampkin, a Republican lobbyist at Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck and a former adviser to former Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), said the midterm elections were less about personality than they were about issues, like the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. That helped Democrats and could continue to do so in 2024.

“In the midterm election, there were two competing narratives: There was the Republican narrative of inflation and referendum of Joe Biden. Democrats were talking about the Trump overhang, but also were able to talk to some key constituencies after the Dobbs decision,” Lampkin said, referring to the Supreme Court decision toppling Roe v. Wade.

Other Democrats say that no matter who Biden faces, he should focus on selling his own achievements.

“The president needs to spend his time selling the accomplishments that he has had and then talking about what he would do if he’s reelected,” said Steve Elmendorf, a Democratic lobbyist and donor.

“I think for this reelection, or any reelect, you have to worry about things you can control. I don’t know that they can really control what happens on the Republican side,” he added. “As we’ve seen with Trump from the day he started, people underestimate him.”

Kremlin says 63 soldiers killed in Ukrainian missile attack

Just In | The Hill

A Ukrainian attack on a building sheltering Russian soldiers in the occupied Donetsk region killed 63 service members on New Year’s Day, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Monday, which would be one of the deadliest strikes on Russian forces since the beginning of the war.

The number of those killed was disputed by Ukrainian military claimed that hundreds of soldiers were killed in the rocket attack, but the figure could not be independently confirmed, according to the New York Times.

Russian authorities said the Ukrainian military used a U.S.-made HIMARS guided rocket system to carry out the attack on a temporary Russian base.

“The Kiev regime struck with six rockets of the U.S.-made HIMARS multiple launch rocket system at the point of temporary deployment of one of the units of the Russian armed forces in the area of the settlement of Makeyevka,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

RIA Novosti, a Russian state-owned media organization, reported that two of the six missiles fired by the Ukrainian military were shot down.

Contrasting reports came in from both Russian and Ukrainian sources. A former Russian paramilitary commander Igor Girkin suggested the attacks were severe.

Girkin said in a post on Telegram, a social media app, that “many hundreds” were dead and wounded, and said the building temporarily housing the Russian troops was “almost completely destroyed.”

The strike on the city of Makiivka continues already intense fighting in the Donetsk region, which is one of the four areas that Russia illegally annexed in October. The reports of the Ukrainian attack comes as Ukraine officials also said Monday it had destroyed 40 exploding Russian drones that were headed for Kyiv overnight.

What appeared to be an easy fix was not as more personnel showed up to lend helping hands.

“There’s a joke in there. How many guys does it take to fix a rim in an NBA game?” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said, adding that the whole situation was a “buzzkill.”

Celtics star Jaylen Brown was unhappy with the situation after the game. Brown is a vice president of the National Basketball Players Association. He said there was “no communication” over what was happening on the court as the rim was being worked on.

“That’s how injuries and stuff happen,” Brown said. “That whole process was handled poorly, in my opinion, and that had an effect as well. But luckily nobody got hurt.”

Brown led the Celtics with 30 points and eight rebounds, but Boston would come up short.

Denver won the game 123-111. Nikola Jokic had 30 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists in the win.

New Year’s resolution: Exercise trainer discusses ways to ‘jump’ into the New Year

Latest & Breaking News on Fox News

The New Year is upon us!

Many people choose to get fit as a New Year’s resolution as they also hope to shed a few pounds in 2023.

A twist on the typical cardio workout could jumpstart your own New Year’s resolution — and it involves a mini trampoline.

LOSE WEIGHT, EAT HEALTHY AND MAKE MONEY: AMERICANS REVEAL THEIR 2023 NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

EvolveYou’s Melissa Kendter, a personal trainer who has a bachelor’s degree from Delaware Valley University, joined “Fox & Friends” on Monday morning to show ways to incorporate low-impact, cardio workouts with a mini trampoline in the comfort of your home.

She recommended starting with a light bounce to obtain balance.

“Get in an athletic stance. Core is tight. Bottom back a bit … slightly bounce,” she said.

FORGET THE NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION — TRY THE ‘MONDAY RESET’ INSTEAD

Kendter said that as people get more comfortable with the trampoline, they can add their arms to the mix.

For additional balance, Kendter recommended getting a stick or sturdy bar of some sort to hold onto if needed.

The mini trampoline can also be used for more than just jumping, she said.

Kendter showed how to use the trampoline as a stability tool for lunges.

She also recommended using it to help with a core exercise — sitting on the trampoline and engaging your core while moving your legs in and out.

NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION: ‘BIBLE MEMORY MAN’ SHARES TIPS FOR MEMORIZING THE BIBLE IN 2023

Kendter said the trampoline can also be used as a tool for elevated push-ups, for the ultimate full body exercise move.

To end the circuit, Kendter recommended getting back on the trampoline and jumping with a twist in the waist.

“It’s all about building healthy habits in the New Year,” she said.

For those who need to modify the trampoline jumping, Kendter recommended simply bouncing instead.

“You don’t have to jump up in the air — you can just bounce,” she said.

Kendter recommended looking online for a mini trampoline for purchase.

She said they can range from $50 to $500.

The fitness instructor recommended checking out local exercise facilities to see if they offer any trampoline fitness classes.

“Everything should be sustainable and maintainable, so we can build long-term success,” she said.

Plus, it’s fun!

Kendter is a functional training specialist, a run coach and a certified personal trainer. She owns her own private studio as well.
