Chinese travelers facing COVID-19 testing requirements from more countries amid outbreak

China is dealing with an explosive outbreak of COVID-19 as health officials relax their draconian “zero-COVID” containment policy, prompting several countries around the world to mandate tests for Chinese travelers

The U.S. cited the surge in infections as well as a “lack of adequate and transparent epidemiological and viral genomic sequence data” from China’s government in announcing a testing requirement last week.

Australia announced on Monday that travelers from China, Hong Kong, and Macau will have to undergo pre-departure testing for COVID-19.

“This decision has been made to safeguard Australia from the risk of potential new emerging variants, and in recognition of the rapidly evolving situation in China and uncertainty about emerging viral variants,” Australia’s Department of Health explained.

Mexican prison attack death toll up to 17, gang leader one of 25 escapees officials say

Mexican authorities on Monday raised the death toll in a prison attack intended to free a local gang leader across the southern border from El Paso, Texas to 17.

Security Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez said 10 of the dead were prison guards who were attacked by gunmen who arrived early Sunday in armored vehicles and fired on the entrance and inside dormitories.

In total, 25 inmates escaped during the violence. They were members of the Mexicles gang, which Rodríguez associated with the Caborca Cartel. The leader of the Mexicles gang was among those who escaped, she said.

The Caborca Cartel had been led by drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero, who was recaptured by authorities in July.

When authorities went inside the prison, they found 10 “VIP” cells outfitted with televisions and other comforts. One even had a safe filled with cash. Also found in the prison was cocaine methamphetamine, heroin, fentanyl, and marijuana.

Two other gunmen killed after attacking local police a short time before the attack on the prison were likely a diversion, Defense Secretary Luis Cresencio Sandoval said. They were not included in the 17 dead, which were made up of 10 guards and seven inmates.

The state prison was the scene of a riot in August that spread to the streets of Juarez, resulting in nearly a dozen people dead.

In that case, two inmates were killed inside the prison and then alleged gang members started shooting up the town, including killing four employees of a radio station who were doing a promotion at a restaurant.

Ohio State kicker misses game-winning field goal exactly as the ball drops in Times Square

When the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Eve, Ohio State was having a much different night than the rest of the East Coast.

The Buckeyes dominated the defending national champions for most of the Peach Bowl on Saturday night, entering the fourth quarter with a 14-point lead but Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett closed the gap to 41-35 with a minute left before taking the lead with a 76-yard drive and a 10-yard touchdown pass to Adonai Mitchell.

UFC's Dana White, wife Anne apologize after video of alcohol-fueled slapping incident surfaces

UFC president Dana White apologized Monday for an incident in Mexico involving his wife, Anne, while the two were ringing in the New Year over the weekend.

The fracas allegedly occurred at a nightclub in Cabo San Lucas. White told TMZ Sports he and his wife had been drinking but it was no excuse for him allegedly slapping his wife after she had struck him. Anne was seen talking with her husband before slapping him first.

Video of the incident went viral across social media.

“There was definitely a lot of alcohol, but there’s no excuse,” White told TMZ Sports. “I’m literally making no excuses for this thing at all. It’s never happened before. It’s the first time that it’s ever happened, and people are going to say what they’re going to say.

“It is what it is. And whatever people do say, it’s deserved. I deserve it. It happened. I don’t know why it happened and my wife and I have apologized to each other, we’ve apologized to our kids, and this is one of those things that everyone is going to chime in. Ex-NFL star Boomer Esiason rips Patriots' Mac Jones over alleged 'd—–ness' body language

It may not have been a pretty season but the New England Patriots are on the brink of making the playoffs behind a rock-solid defense and second-year quarterback Mac Jones.

Jones’ play has been far from outstanding.

He missed some games due to injury and has only managed to pass for 2,753 yards and 11 touchdowns in 13 games. He’s only thrown for more than 300 yards in a game twice this season.

For former NFL star Boomer Esiason, Jones’ body language is an issue. The one-time NFL MVP appeared on “The Greg Hill Show” on WEEI radio Monday and ripped the former Alabama standout.

“Here’s the thing that I really dislike about Mac Jones if you want to get to the root of it,” Esiason said. “His body language, his facial expressions, his gyrations on the field p—s me off. There’s a d—–ness to them. I don’t know how to explain it.

Esiason then compared Jones to seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady and how the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback “could be d—chey too at times” but backs it all up with his performance on the field.

“So, all I’m saying is that, I don’t necessarily know that he’s earned the right to act the way that he does at times, like frustrated, looking at the coaches and screaming and yelling, putting his hands to his head,” Esiason added. “Body language for a quarterback is so important. And I hate when quarterbacks sulk on the sideline; they have to be above all of that. They have to have the backbone. They have to have the leadership bone. They have to be able to look guys in the face and know what they’re doing. Don’t come off with your hands in the air.”

WARNING: EXPLICIT LANGUAGE

Jones guided the Patriots to the playoffs last season after winning the starting quarterback role from Cam Newton in 2021.

In 30 games, Jones has 6,554 yards, 33 touchdowns and 21 interceptions with a 66.5 completion rate. He was a Pro Bowler in 2021 – no other running back, wide receiver or tight end made it nor did they make it in 2022.

“We can confirm that Jeremy has suffered blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries and has undergone surgery today, January 2nd 2023,” the statement read, according to People. “He has returned from surgery and remains in the intensive care unit in critical but stable condition.

“Jeremy’s family would like to express their gratitude to the incredible doctors and nurses looking after him, Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue, Washoe County Sheriff, Reno City Mayor Hillary Schieve and the Carano and Murdock families,” the statement continued. “They are also tremendously overwhelmed and appreciative of the outpouring of love and support from his fans.”

A source told People magazine on Monday that Renner’s injuries were “extensive.” The “Mayor of Kingstown” and Marvel star’s rep shared that Renner is in “critical but stable condition” and is “receiving excellent care.”

Renner was injured in an area near Mt. Rose Highway, a road linking Lake Tahoe, which straddles the Nevada-California border, and south Reno. The Washoe County (Nevada) Sheriff’s Office said late Sunday that Renner had to be flown by helicopter to a hospital for treatment.

Renner owns a home in Washoe County, which includes Reno, and told the Reno Gazette Journal in 2019 that he chose the area because Reno was the right-sized city for him, it has majestic scenery and it allowed him and his family to ski frequently.

Fox News Digital has reached out to Renner’s rep for comment.

Renner was the only person involved in Sunday’s accident, and the sheriff’s office said in a news release that it is investigating.

“At approximately 9:00am on January 1, 2023, the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office responded to a traumatic injury in the area of Mt. Rose Highway in Reno, Nevada,” the release read.

“Upon arrival, Deputies coordinated with Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District and REMSA Health to arrange for medical transport of Mr. Jeremy Renner via care flight to a local area hospital,” it continued. “Mr. Renner was the only involved party in the incident.”

Idaho murder suspect’s former student says behavior changed after slayings: ‘He seemed preoccupied'

Bryan Kohberger was on the tail end of his first semester as a PhD student in Washington State University’s criminal justice program when he allegedly broke into a house in Moscow, Idaho, and stabbed four college students to death on Nov. 13.

The brutal slayings reportedly didn’t stop Kohberger from attending class at WSU’s Pullman campus, where he worked as a TA and was described as a tough grader whose disposition and teaching style changed in recent weeks.

“Definitely around then, he started grading everybody just 100s. Pretty much if you turned something in, you were getting high marks. He stopped leaving notes. He seemed preoccupied,” Hayden Stinchfield, a student in one of Kohberger’s classes, told CNN.

“The couple times that he did come after, or around that time period, he had a little more facial hair, stubble, less well-kept. He was a little quieter.”

Another criminology student in one of Kohberger’s classes, Joey Famularo, told the Spokesman-Review that Kohberger “always seemed a little bit on edge.”

“We just assumed he was kind of shy,” Famularo told the local newspaper.

Missouri could become first state to execute a transgender woman

Missouri may be the first state to ever execute a transgender woman in the United States, unless the state’s governor grants clemency, according to reports.

Amber McLaughlin, 49, is a transgender woman and is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection tomorrow, after being found guilty of killing a former girlfriend in 2003.

Amber McLaughlin was found guilty of first-degree murder for killing her girlfriend in 2003. McLaughlin was tried as Scott McLaughlin, and did not transition until after the conviction.

MISSISSIPPI DEATH ROW INMATE DINES ON PORK CHOPS, BISCUITS IN LAST MEAL BEFORE EXECUTION

The Associated Press reported that McLaughlin was in a relationship with 45-year-old Beverly Guenther before transitioning and would sometimes show up at an office in St. Louis where Guenther worked.

At times, McLaughlin hid inside the building, according to court records, leading Guenther to obtain a restraining order.

On the night of Nov. 20, 2003, Guenther’s neighbors called police after she failed to return home, the AP reported.

Officers went to the office where Guenther worked and found a broken knife handle near her car and a trail of blood. The next day, McLaughlin showed police where Guenther’s body had been dumped in the Mississippi River.

McLaughlin was ultimately convicted of first-degree murder in 2006 and sentenced to death after a jury deadlocked on the sentence, AP reported. In 2016, a court ordered a new sentencing hearing, but in 2021, the federal appeals court panel reinstated the death penalty.

With no appeals pending, McLaughlin’s attorney Larry Comp told AP, clemency is being sought.

ALABAMA’S FAILED LETHAL INJECTION EXECUTION IS UNPRECEDENTED THIRD SINCE 2018

The request for clemency does not primarily focus on McLaughlin’s gender identity, but instead on traumatic childhood and mental health issues which were never presented to a jury during trial.

AP reported that the clemency petition claims when McLaughlin was with a foster parent as a toddler, that person rubbed feces in her face. Another time, her adoptive father used a stun gun on her, according to the petition.

The petition also claims McLaughlin suffers from depression and attempted to kill herself several times.

When it comes to McLaughlin’s gender identity, the petition addresses a diagnosis of gender dysphoria, which is a condition that can cause anguish and more because of a person struggling between their assigned sex at birth, and their gender identity, AP reported.

“We think Amber has demonstrated incredible courage because I can tell you there’s a lot of hate when it comes to that issue,” Komp told AP on Monday. But he added it is not the focus of the clemency request.

Missouri Gov. Mike Parson is reviewing the request for clemency, which a spokesperson for the governor told AP is still underway.

The Death Penalty Information Center, according to AP, said there is no known case of a transgender inmate being executed in the U.S.

This is also the first use of the death penalty on a woman since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated capital punishment in 1976, according to U.S. House of Representative members Cori Bush and Emanuel Cleaver, who urged Parson to grant clemency.

House faces temporary chaos if McCarthy stumbles in bid for speakership

The 118th Congress convenes for the first time on Tuesday at noon.

“Opening day” in Congress is always full of pageantry. Lawmakers pour into the Capitol with their families from all over the country. Toddlers and kids run up and down the aisles. Freshmen bring everyone to Capitol Hill. They pack their offices with constituents, supporters and families, serving punch and local delicacies from back home.

It’s a lot like the first day of school.

And this year will likely be like any other opening day in the House of Representatives – until about 2 p.m.

That’s usually when the House votes on a speaker. The new speaker, in turn, swears in the entire body, and we’re off to the races.

And for the first time in a century, things might not go down like that. It’s far from certain that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., will become speaker. And, what’s even more cryptic is how long it may take the House to elect McCarthy as speaker, or someone else.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif.

(Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images)

This could take a few hours. Or, it may even take a week or more.

The first order of business in the House is electing a speaker. It can’t do anything — including swearing in the new members — until the House chooses a speaker.

The last time the speaker vote even went to a second ballot was 1923. It took nine ballots and three days before the House reelected Speaker Frederick Gillett, R-Mass. The House frittered away two weeks before electing Speaker Howell Cobb, D-Ga., in 1849. But that was efficient compared to the two months the House squandered in late 1855 and early 1856 before finally electing Speaker Nathaniel Banks, D-Mass., — on the 163rd ballot.

This is what opening day will look like in the House – before things might get dicey.

Clerk of the House Cheryl Johnson will call the House to order promptly at noon on Tuesday. Johnson is the holdover from the Democratically-controlled House. She will preside from the dais – and be in charge of the House until its members select a speaker.

So, the longer it takes Republicans to figure out a speaker, the longer the House is run by an appointee of outgoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

The first thing the House must do is take attendance. All members elected in November are asked to come to the chamber and record their presence. The House starts at 434 members: 222 Republicans to 212 Democrats. There is one vacancy: the late Rep. Donald McEachin, D-Va., died just after the election.

Then, it’s on to the selection of speaker.

REPORTER’S NOTEBOOK: SANTOS ADDS BAGGAGE TO GOP’S HOUSE MAJORITY TAKEOFF

House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., will nominate McCarthy. House Democratic Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., will nominate Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y.

If this were a typical year, that would be it. But Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., plans to challenge McCarthy for the speakership. It’s possible that someone could nominate Biggs or even another candidate. There’s no requirement that the speaker of the House be a member of the body – although that’s never happened. However, it is routine for a few members to vote for a few non-members in protest.

The vote is of the highest order at that moment in the House. The House then begins with the Reading Clerk alphabetically calling the roll of each name. Members respond verbally with their pick for speaker. The winner is the candidate who receives an outright majority of the House by those who voted for someone by name. In other words, if all 434 members vote for someone by name, the magic number is 218. But there are at least five known opponents of McCarthy. If they all vote for someone else by name, McCarthy only has a maximum of 217 votes.

However, it gets trickier yet.

There are often a few absences. So the House may not start at 434 members. Or, it’s possible members just decline to vote for speaker. Lawmakers who vote “present” don’t count against the total. The “218” threshold begins to dwindle.

(AP Photo/Barry Reeger)

The problem for McCarthy is if several members cast ballots for someone else by name. Such a scenario blocks McCarthy from obtaining an outright majority of ballots cast for someone by name. He may have the most votes. But that’s not the rule.

The successful speaker candidate doesn’t need 218. Pelosi and former House Speakers Newt Gingrich, R-Ga., and John Boehner, R-Ohio, each prevailed in at least one election with fewer than 218 votes.

But the complicating factor is that the “magic number” for speaker is unknown until the first tally is complete. We then know the total number of ballots cast for someone by name.

If there’s no winner, the House must vote again and again and again – until it selects a winner.

Things could get chaotic if McCarthy nor anyone else prevails on the first ballot. The House will find itself in a posture not seen in 100 years. There’s not a lot of precedent as to how things should unfold in the House.

This is all we know on Jan. 3: Cheryl Johnson, the Democratic Clerk of the House, remains in charge. And, there are no members of the House.

Let me say that again: there are no members of the House.

The House is not fully constituted because there is no speaker to swear them in. The members-elect only become members when they are sworn in by the speaker.

You may be cooling your heels at the Hyatt Regency bar until you see them sworn in. And forget about staged photo-ops with the new speaker. Those are on ice, too.

Fox is told this could become a staring contest that takes days to play out. The reason is that both sides are so dug in that no one concedes right away. There will be debates. Horse trading. Raised voices. Tempers will flare.

All the while, the Republican-led House could get off to one of the most inauspicious beginnings for any Congress in history. No bills to cut IRS agents. No legislation on abortion. The House can’t even fully constitute its committees.

And, if this speaker saga drags on through Jan. 13, the lawmakers themselves and certain aides won’t get paid.

However, it’s possible the House could eventually elect a speaker without an outright majority of those casting ballots by name. In both the elections of Howell Cobb in 1849 and Nathaniel Banks in 1856, the repeated voting wore members down. For both Cobb and Banks, the House adopted a resolution that then allowed it to pick a speaker with a simple majority. In other words, the resolution said that the winner simply secured the most votes. It’s possible the House could do the same in these circumstances if it fails long enough to elect a speaker.

But we have not addressed a unique scenario which could unfold this Jan. 3: whether to seat Rep.-elect George Santos, R-N.Y.

We noted earlier that once the House concludes its initial quorum call, the next order of business is to select a speaker. Fox is told it’s possible members could try to challenge whether the House should seat Santos. Members of both parties view Santos as tainted. So why should he get to cast what could be a decisive ballot for speaker when he may be a fraud?

Late House Democratic Caucus Chairman Vic Fazio, D-Calif., attempted to sidetrack the vote in 1997 because Newt Gingrich had faced an ethics investigation. However, it was ruled that the selection of the speaker was of the highest importance to begin the new Congress. So ethics questions must wait.

CONGRESS MISSES ITS DEADLINE TO FUND THE GOVERNMENT AGAIN

One could anticipate a similar situation – and outcome – if there’s a challenge to seat Santos before the speaker vote.

However, once the House picks a speaker – yet before the speaker swears in the members – a lawmaker could contest whether the House should seat Santos.

Regardless of Santos’ problems, 142,673 voters in New York’s 3rd Congressional District elected him as their congressman. Article I, Section 2 of the Constitution states that “No Person shall be a Representative who shall not have attained to the Age of twenty five Years, and been Seven Years a Citizen of the United States, who shall not, when elected be an Inhabitant of that State in which he shall be chosen.”

Santos meets that bar. We think.

But Article, I, Section 5 of the Constitution also says that the House and Senate have the final say as to who is seated.

This brings us to a phenomenon in Congress known as “exclusion.”

The House has challenged the seating of dozens of members over the years. Lawmakers have raised questions about ethics, finances, bigamy, polygamy and residence. In 1985, the House refused to seat either the late Rep. Frank McCloskey, D-Ind., or his GOP challenger Richard McIntyre because of a dispute over ballots. The House investigated and finally re-seated McCloskey months later. But McCloskey did not get to be a member on opening day.

In early 1967, House Speaker John McCormack, D-Mass., decided against seating Rep. Adam Clayton Powell, D-N.Y., due to a host of ethics and financial issues. Later that year, the House voted 307-116 to exclude Powell from taking his seat in the House. Powell then sued McCormack and the House and ran again for his vacant seat. Powell won, and the House seated him in January 1969. The Supreme Court ruled in Powell v. McCormack that the House overstepped its bounds by barring Powell from being seated in 1967.

The Constitution is clear about the requirements to become a member. But the House may not add requirements for people to be sworn-in. It says nothing about character.

So, any challenge regarding Santos may have to wait until after the speaker vote is complete – whenever that is.

Moreover, once the House swears in Santos, it could move to expel him. Nothing in the Constitution says how long you get to stay. That’s why Article I, Section 5 of the Constitution also grants the House and Senate the right to kick out members. Expulsion requires a two-thirds vote. The House has only expelled five members in its history.

So, this could be a doozy of a few days on Capitol Hill. And, it may be a while until America’s bicameral legislature has two functioning bodies.

Bucs' Jake Camarda receives praise for heads up punt in closing moments against Panthers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers got monster performances from Tom Brady and Mike Evans in their win over the Carolina Panthers but it may have been their punter who made the play of the day on Sunday.

With 42 seconds left in the game, the Buccaneers were forced to punt the ball away. Jake Camarda lined up to kick the ball away but he fumbled the snap. He managed to run to his left and kicked the ball away with his right foot.

Camarda’s extra effort helped Tampa Bay avoid a blocked punt or worse. A penalty on the play also gave the Buccaneers a second chance at putting the Panthers away. The second punt attempt was driven 41 yards and Carolina was forced to start at their own 8-yard line.

Fans were quick to applaud Camarda’s punt in the tricky situation.

Brady had three touchdown passes and a rushing touchdown to lift the Buccaneers to a 30-24 victory over the Panthers and clinched the NFC South title. He finished the game 34-of-45 with 432 passing yards and added a rushing touchdown to his tally.

It was the first time he’s gone over 400 yards passing since Week 16 against the New York Jets last season.
