Jim Harbaugh 'thinks' he'll stay with Michigan amid NFL rumors

Despite a reported meeting with Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper about their head coaching position, Jim Harbaugh says it’s likely he will stay at the University of Michigan in 2023.

Harbaugh’s meeting with Tepper was not described as a formal interview, but the former San Francisco 49ers head coach has reportedly drawn interest from other NFL teams.

However, he thinks he will be in Ann Arbor for a ninth season.

“Although no one knows the future, I think I will be coaching Michigan next year,” Harbaugh told the Queen City News.

Harbaugh was in conversations with the Minnesota Vikings last year but described it as a “one-time thing” and said that would be the last time he sought NFL coaching opportunities.

Carolina defensive tackle Derrick Brown said last week that “everybody” wants interim head coach Steve Wilks to get the job permanently.

“I’ll speak for everybody in that locker room in saying we want Coach Wilks to be our next head coach. That’s for sure,” Brown said. “I think every single week we’re gonna come in, he’s gonna tell you exactly how it is. He doesn’t sugarcoat nothing.

“He keeps it plain Jane, per se. He lets you know exactly what’s going on. You could be one of the best players, but you walk into that building on Monday, he’s gonna tell you exactly how he felt about how you played. That level of clarity, that’s exactly what we want.”

TCU PULLS OFF LARGEST UPSET IN CFP HISTORY WITH WIN OVER MICHIGAN IN FIESTA BOWL

The Panthers are 5-6 with Wilks after starting the season 1-4 with former head coach Matt Rhule.

Michigan lost the Peach Bowl to TCU in the College Football Playoff semifinals, and TCU will meet Georgia in the national championship game Monday. It was the second straight CFP appearance for Michigan.

Harbaugh is 51-17 since joining Michigan in 2015. Including his stops at Stanford and the University of San Diego, his college head coaching record is 74-25. During his four seasons with the 49ers, he went 44-19-1, making three straight NFC championships and the 2013 Super Bowl, which he lost to his brother, John, and the Baltimore Ravens.

China undercounting COVID-19 cases and deaths, WHO says: 'We still do not have complete data'

Coronavirus cases have surged in China since the country relaxed its draconian “zero-COVID” strategy last month, but officials there are likely undercounting the extent of the outbreak, a World Health Organization official said on Wednesday.

“We believe the current numbers being published from China underrepresent the true impact of the disease in terms of hospital admissions, in terms of ICU admissions, particularly in terms of death,” Mike Ryan, WHO’s emergencies director, told reporters in Geneva. “We still do not have complete data.”

China has been reporting just a handful of deaths from COVID-19 on a daily basis, bringing the total to 5,258 since the pandemic began.

Many international health officials believe that the true numbers are much higher, with UK-based health data firm Airfinity predicting last week that about 9,000 Chinese citizens are likely dying from COVID-19 each day.

Hospitals and morgues are also reportedly overwhelmed in China. Graphic videos emerged on social media this week of family members cremating relatives’ bodies in the streets.

The surge has prompted several countries, including the U.S., Canada, Japan, Australia, and South Korea, to place restrictions on Chinese travelers.

European Union officials recommended on Wednesday that Chinese passengers should have a negative COVID-19 test before boarding a flight to any of the bloc’s 27 nations.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning lashed out at the restrictions this week saying that they are “unacceptable” and lack “scientific basis.”

Prince Joachim of Denmark's four children lose royal titles after Queen Margrethe's decision, website updated

Four grandchildren of Queen Margrethe of Denmark, who officially lost their royal prince and princess titles on New Year’s Day, have had their new titles of count and countess updated on the official royal family website.

Nikolai, 23, Felix, 20, Henrik, 13, and Athena, 10, are the children of the queen’s youngest son Prince Joachim, 53.

The children will keep their place in the succession after their father, who is sixth in line to the throne.

Joachim shares Nikolai and Felix with ex-wife Alexandria, Countess of Frederiksborg, and Henrik and Athena with his current wife Princess Marie.

IS KING CHARLES WATCHING? QUEEN MARGRETHE’S CHOICE TO STRIP ROYAL TITLES FROM GRANDKIDS ISN’T PERSONAL: EXPERT

The decision to remove their titles was announced in September and went into effect in the new year.

While the queen said she made the decision in her grandchildren’s and the monarchy’s best interests, the stripping of their titles has caused tensions within the royal family.

In an October statement, the queen said she was “sorry” after she “underestimated the extent to which” Prince Joachim and his children felt affected by her decision.

She explained that “holding a royal title involves a number of commitments and duties that, in the future, will lie with fewer members of the royal family. This adjustment, which I view as a necessary future-proofing of the monarchy, I want to take in my own time.”

In September, the palace announced that the royal titles would be “discontinued” and that they would be referred to as excellencies rather than royal highnesses.

The grandchildren inherited their prince and princess titles upon birth and the queen bestowed their count and countess of Monpezat titles in 2008.

“The Queen’s decision is in line with similar adjustments that other royal houses have made in various ways in recent years,” the September statement added.

The queen sought to give her grandchildren more freedom to “shape their own lives to a much greater extent without being limited by the special considerations and duties that a formal affiliation with the Royal House of Denmark as an institution involves.”

Joachim told a Danish publication after the announcement that his family “are all very sad,” according to Entertainment Tonight.

“It’s never fun to see your children being mistreated like that. They themselves find themselves in a situation they do not understand,” he said.

Alexandria likewise said that her children feel “ostracized” by the queen.

Iran outraged after French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo publishes cartoons mocking Khamenei

A series of offensive cartoons depicting Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo has provoked outrage in Tehran.

The magazine’s latest issue features the winners of a recent cartoon contest in which entrants were asked to draw the most offensive caricatures of Khamenei, who has held Iran’s highest office for more than 30 years.

The contest was billed as a show of support for anti-government protests rocking Iran in response to the death of a woman in the custody of Iran’s morality police in September.

One of the finalists depicts a turbaned cleric reaching for a hangman’s noose as he drowns in blood, while another shows Khamenei clinging to a giant throne above the raised fists of protesters. Others depict more vulgar and sexually explicit scenes.

IRAN SENTENCES TWO TEENS TO DEATH FOR WAGING ‘ENMITY AGAINST GOD’ IN PROTEST AGAINST REGIME

On Wednesday, Iran summoned the French ambassador to condemn the cartoons. Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian vowed a “decisive and effective response” to the publication of the cartoons, which he said had insulted Iran’s religious and political authorities.

Charlie Hebdo has a long history of publishing vulgar cartoons mocking Islamists. On Jan. 7, 2015, two French-born al-Qaida extremists attacked the newspaper’s office, killing 12 cartoonists, and it has been the target of other attacks over the years.

The magazine presents itself as an advocate for democracy and free expression but it routinely pushes the limits of French hate speech laws with often sexually explicit caricatures that target nearly everyone.

Women have taken the lead in the protests, with many stripping off the compulsory Islamic headscarf in public. The protesters have called for overthrowing Iran’s ruling clerics in one of the biggest challenges to their rule since the 1979 Islamic Revolution that brought them to power.

Harry Hamlin, 71, says he changed his college major from architecture to acting after taking psychedelic drug

Harry Hamlin might have never pursued an acting career if he hadn’t taken a road trip to “one of the most magical places on Earth” before starting college in the early 1970s.

The 71-year-old actor told People magazine that he initially intended to study architecture at UC Berkeley, but his plans changed after taking a psychedelic drug given to him by a Hell’s Angel during a trip to a redwood forest outside of San Francisco.

“I began to see things in a different way and my curiosity was sort of turbo-charged,” the “Mad Men” alum recalled.

Two days before registration for architecture classes at the university opened, Hamlin was invited on a road trip to La Honda, California.

HARRY HAMLIN ALMOST DIVORCED LISA RINNA WHEN SHE JOINED ‘REAL HOUSEWIVES’

The former “L.A. Law” star remembered that he and his friends spent the night at a hidden compound with tree houses.

The group was gathered around a campfire when they were approached by a Hell’s Angel who asked to borrow a wrench. The man used the wrench to open up a pipe in one of the tree houses and took out a “pile of blue pills,” which turned out to be psychedelics.

The biker gave Hamlin and each of his friends a blue pill to thank them for their help. Afterward, the California native missed the first day of registration.

“By the time I got there, a guy said classes had filled up but if I hot-footed it over to the drama department, I might be able to satisfy my requirements,” he explained.

The actor, who is pictured in 1979, said he took a "blue pill" during a road trip to "one of the most magical places on earth" before starting college in the early 1970s.

“I ended up in Acting 101,” Hamlin added. “I never got back to the architecture school.”

Hamlin later transferred to Yale University where he graduated with bachelor of arts degrees in drama and psychology in 1974.

He later launched a successful career in acting which now spans almost five decades. Over the course of his career, Hamlin won a Primetime Emmy Award and has been nominated for three Golden Globe Awards.

“I think the key to longevity is to always pursue the next impossible task as an actor because you can never be an expert in this,” Hamlin told People. “There’s always another challenge.”

The “Clash of the Titans” star explained that he enjoys taking risks with his acting projects. While pursuing an M.F.A. in acting at San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theater, he appeared naked on stage while starring in a production of “Equus.”

“They didn’t have us rehearse taking our clothes off so the first time we took our clothes off was actually the first night on stage together,” he remembered. “It was trial by fire.”

Hamlin added, “To have that experience as your first professional experience, nothing is going to scare you after that.”

In 1976, the actor starred in a television production of William Shakespeare’s play “The Taming of the Shrew.” He has also performed in stage productions of “Henry V,” “Hamlet” and “Macbeth.”

In his interview with People, he revealed that he takes acting classes every Saturday, where he is studying “King Lear.”

“My lifelong pursuit has been to try and untangle the Shakespearean roles that I’ve done and want to continue to do,” Hamlin said.

“The thing about Shakespeare is it’s a big mystery and every play is a big mystery and you’ve got to figure out the key to get in — and unlock the mystery.”

“I’m just getting into Lear so to deconstruct this, and get to the point where I know what I’m doing with it, will probably take six months,” he added.

“And then you have to memorize the play and then you spend another six months trying to figure out how to do it right.”

Hamlin will next be seen in the new AMC series “Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches,” which will premiere on Jan. 8. He is also starring alongside Sally Field, Jane Fonda, Rita Moreno, Jimmy O. Yang, Lily Tomlin and Tom Brady in the upcoming movie “80 for Brady.” The comedy is set to be released in theaters on Feb. 3.

House Speaker vote derby the 'anti-Groundhog Day' because McCarthy's prospects keep getting worse, critics say

Unlike Bill Murray’s character in the film “Groundhog Day” – who was forced to relive February 2 over and over again – Kevin McCarthy seems to be experiencing an “anti-Groundhog Day” as his chances of being elected House speaker appear to be growing slimmer after several failed votes, Fox News host Greg Gutfeld said on “The Five” Wednesday.

“This is not Groundhog Day at all. It’s the opposite of Groundhog Day because in the movie, he actually got better,” Gutfeld said. “This is the opposite. He’s not. No one’s learning anything. It’s anti-Groundhog Day.”

“The Five” host nodded to observers making the point that the House Republican caucus‘ repeated votes to name a speaker continue to end in a repetitive, predictable stalemate.

McCarthy needs a majority – currently 218 votes – to attain the speakership. Democrats continue to stand in lockstep behind their chosen caucus leader, Rep.-elect Hakeem Jeffries of New York. In the outside chance some Republicans defect to Jeffries, he could become speaker instead with only a handful more votes.

The most recent vote tallies have recorded about 20 votes for Rep.-elect Byron Donalds, a conservative from Naples, Fla., who appears to have the support of most of the right-wing Freedom Caucus.

House Freedom Caucus Chairman Scott Perry of Pennsylvania nominated Donalds with an impassioned speech. Rep.-elect Victoria Spartz, R-Ind., most recently voted “present.”

On “The Five,” Gutfeld said he is changing is mind on whether Republicans should come to a prompt conclusion of the speaker election.

“I want it to go on forever. It’s like an extra inning game that, like. when it’s on, you go set the 22nd inning, you want it to go to 27, you want to go to that long disco,” he said. “It’s like a horrifying spectacle. But it’s also hypnotic.”

“I have a theory that this is all being done because it’s like they love to revert to being college kids pulling an all-nighter. So this is just an excuse to order 50 pizzas and make us pay for it.”

Co-host Judge Jeanine Pirro noted the “present’ vote by Spartz, reporting that the lawmaker wants to forge a discussion instead of continued rounds of voting-in-vain.

On the Democratic side, some lawmakers have, however, appeared to signal they are open to consensus candidates for speaker.

Rep.-elect Ro Khanna of California told Fox News’ Neil Cavuto Wednesday that while he could not envision supporting Donalds, he would consider a crossover vote if the Republican were a moderate he has worked with constructively before, citing Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania.

Fitzpatrick has himself bucked his party at times, notably being the only Republican member of the state’s delegation not to endorse 2022 gubernatorial nominee Doug Mastriano after the conservative Trump supporter won his crowded primary.

Speaking with a reporter from Spectrum News, Rep.-elect Marcy Kaptur, D-Ohio – the longest-serving woman in Congress – also floated the prospect of supporting a certain Republican member.

“I wish I could be part of some kind of unity caucus that would yield [Kevin McCarthy] the votes because the Republicans hold the majority and maybe put us in a special category,” she said.

Pope Benedict XVI and Pope John Paul II: Catholicism's dynamic duo

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

I’ll never forget standing on the tarmac at Andrew’s Air Force Base in 2008 with a gaggle of journalists waiting for “Shepherd One” to touch down. Like the rest of my colleagues, my feet were killing me, but the excitement was palpable.

The honor guard was in place, Secret Service agents were in place, and dignitaries were queued up. Moments after the Alitalia airliner came to a halt, President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura Bush were first in line to greet the beaming German pontiff.

As he moved from the tarmac into an awaiting limo, he blessed the adoring crowds, including the journalists covering his visit.

America had only hosted two popes — Paul VI in 1965 and John Paul II on seven occasions — but this was the first and only visit of Pope Benedict XVI.

Sounding incredibly like his predecessor, Benedict lauded American values and its responsibility to guard freedom and protect the vulnerable.

“Freedom is not only a gift but also a summons to personal responsibility,” he said in his opening remarks, just before celebrating his 81st birthday at the White House.

“The preservation of freedom calls for the cultivation of virtue, self-discipline, sacrifice for the common good, and a sense of responsibility towards the less fortunate. It also demands the courage to engage in civic life and to bring one’s deepest beliefs and values to reasoned public debate.”

John Paul II had said almost the same thing to Americans on multiple occasions.

REV. ROBERT SIRICO: POPE BENEDICT LEFT US A LOT OF THINKING TO DO

It should come as no surprise that Benedict and John Paul were of one mind on most issues. Both men were formed in the crucible of the Second World War. Both were influential fathers of the Second Vatican Council. Karol Wojtyla — the future John Paul II — was a young bishop from Kraków. Josef Ratzinger — the future Benedict XVI — was an adviser to the archbishop of Cologne, Germany.

For both, the Council was the launchpad for their papacies.

Their contributions to Vatican II are legendary — Ratzinger’s to Dei Verbum, a document about the sources of revelation, and Wojtyla to Gaudium et Spes, about the Church in the modern world

Remarkably, they didn’t meet during the Council. Their paths crossed at the 1978 conclave that elected Italian cardinal Albino Luciani — Pope John Paul I.

Ratzinger later recalled his first impression of the Polish cardinal.

“I was particularly impressed by his human warmth and the deep inner rooting in God which appeared so clearly,” he said of that meeting. “And then, of course, I was also impressed by his philosophical education, his acuteness as a thinker, and his ability to communicate his knowledge.”

Shortly after his election in 1978, John Paul II asked Ratzinger to work with him in Rome. But the newly minted German cardinal declined, having only been archbishop of Munich for little more than 18 months.

The pope renewed his offer in 1981. This time Ratzinger accepted. He took on several roles at the Vatican in early 1982, including Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, a post he held until being elected John Paul’s successor in 2005.

Their 23-year partnership was one of the greatest in modern Church history.

“The collaboration with the Holy Father was always characterized by friendship and affection,” Benedict told an interviewer in 2013. “It developed above all on two planes: the official and the private.”

The two met regularly for lunch on Tuesdays and again on Friday evenings to discuss work. A deep friendship also developed.

“[The idea] that John Paul II was a saint came to me from time to time, in the years of my collaboration with him, ever more clearly,” Benedict said.

They became Catholicism’s dynamic duo. It was almost like Ratzinger was Robin to John Paul’s Batman. But it was deeper than that. Ratzinger’s input gave John Paul’s writings greater depth and clarity. Ratzinger was John Paul’s sounding board for many of his initiatives — from the launching of World Youth Day to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, first published in 1992.

Like John Paul II, Benedict understood his responsibility to faithfully interpret the Second Vatican Council.

In some sense, Benedict’s reign was an eight-year extension of John Paul’s 26-year papacy. Both leaned heavily on Council documents in their encyclicals, speeches, and papal writings. Both men helped cement Church teachings on the priesthood, sexuality, and papal authority.

Benedict went on to break new ground on liturgy and ecumenism. His 2007 motu proprio loosened restrictions on priests’ ability to celebrate the Traditional Latin Mass. Two years later, he created a path for Anglicans to come into full communion with the Catholic Church.

History may remember Benedict XVI for his abdication in 2013 — the first pope to do so in more than 600 years. But he saw himself as a simple “co-worker in the truth” — the episcopal motto he chose for himself in 1977.

When he’s laid to rest in the crypt under St. Peter’s Basilica on Thursday, Benedict’s remains will fittingly occupy the tomb left vacant when John Paul was moved to the upper basilica in 2011. This will be only the second papal funeral in 44 years — and the first time a sitting pope presides over the funeral of a former pope in centuries.

Pope Francis may well quote Benedict who fittingly described John Paul II’s entrance into heaven while presiding over his funeral in 2005: “We can be sure that our beloved pope is standing today at the window of the Father’s house, that he sees us and blesses us. Yes, bless us, Holy Father.”

That’s a blessing I would readily accept again — this time from heaven.

Elle King recounts scary fall that left her with amnesia and a concussion: 'The baby is totally fine'

Elle King is on the road to recovery after a nasty fall down her stairs last month.

The “Ex’s & Oh’s” singer recounted the scary accident to “Entertainment Tonight,” sharing “I can laugh now, because I’m doing a lot better, but it was a very intense thing. They said I got amnesia and got post-concussion syndrome.”

King, 33, said she was going downstairs “in the middle of the night, to make a bottle” for her son. King is mother to nearly 18-month-old Lucky Levi, with fiancé Dan Tooker.

“I slipped and knocked myself unconscious,” she explained.

At the time, the Grammy-nominated singer’s initial worry was her son – whom she was home alone with at the time.

“The baby is totally fine, and I’m doing a lot better,” she noted.

“What I love about Nashville is the community that I haven’t really had in any of the last multiple cities that I’ve lived in, even if I’ve had a bunch of friends. There’s something beautiful about this city and my friends and my music family, they all totally gathered around me and were all so supportive and showed up for me and helped me with the baby.”

For King, recovery requires physical therapy.

“A lot of stretches, and a lot of, like, quiet, downtime which has never been my strong suit,” she said of adjustments she’s made since the fall.

Unfortunately for fans, she also had to cancel shows. At the time of the fall, King emotionally wrote to her Instagram story, “Just wanted to check in with a quick update and apologize to my fans in Tampa, Detroit, and Seattle. I share your disappointment that I had to cancel my radio shows this week. No one ever wants to pull out of shows, especially me. I live for performing.”

“To quote a Latvian woman I met at a hostel: you hear them coming like the thunder,” one user said. “More often than not, if they’re talking and laughing louder than everyone else, they’re American. Edit: I love my American neighbours! Sorry if I sounded rude. Canadians are also pretty loud when we get going.”

(Reddit users said American’s loud talking voice is one way they are recognized abroad.)

“And New Yorkers are a different breed,” another user agreed. “Their regular talking voice absolutely booms over everything else. Makes sense when you have to be heard over the 1,000dB noise pollution.”

“How much personal space they give themselves. Americans like at LEAST an arm length,” user Zonerdrone wrote.

“Americans tend to lean on things when standing still,” another offered.

It’s often said that Americans get a bad wrap in foreign cultures, and those biases routinely show up in film and television. In the first episode of the popular Netflix show “Emily in Paris,” for instance, a French character depicts Americans as obese.

“The people are so fat?” Emily’s boss Monsieur Brossard asks her, after a discussion on Chicago’s famous deep-dish pizza. “Why are they all so fat?”

“Well perhaps from the disgusting food,” her other French boss Sylvie, replies.

Other stereotypes have included that Americans are entitled, arrogant, or obsessed with their jobs.

Some Reddit users, however, had kinder things to say.

“I worked as a cashier in a touristic place in Paris, I always recognised Americans because they were kinda friendly to me and they always left tips,” one user said.

Several others agreed with the sentiment.
