EAGLE PASS, Texas – Alabama’s newest U.S. senator has spent more time at the southern border than on Capitol Hill during her brief time in office.

“The people of Alabama did not elect me to let grass grow under my feet,” Sen. Katie Britt said, standing in the shadow of a farmhouse outside Uvalde, Texas. “They elected me to get in here and to do something.”

Britt was in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 3 to get sworn in the U.S. Senate. The next week, the Republican joined a delegation of senators visiting the southern border, speaking with officials and others impacted by the migrant crisis.

“In Washington, we have a problem with people who do a lot of talking but don’t actually take action,” Britt said. “It’s day six on the job. It took Joe Biden 718 days to make it to the border, and here I am. Seeing it firsthand matters.”

Britt is considered a rising star in the GOP, handily winning a primary fight with former Alabama Rep. Mo Brooks. She went on to defeat her general election opponent, Democrat Will Boyd, by 36 points.

But the University of Alabama alumna is no stranger to Capitol Hill. She worked as chief of staff to Sen. Richard Shelby, who she succeeded this month.

Britt described herself as senator “100 out of 100” in terms of her place in the pecking order on Capitol Hill. She later clarified that she was actually 99th — though still last — since Ben Sasse vacated his Nebraska seat and hadn’t been replaced when she made the remark.

“When people say, ‘senator?’ I still kind of sort of look around and say, like, ‘who’s around me?’ So it has not quite sunk in,” Britt said.

“I am a wife. I am a momma of two school aged kids,” said Britt. “My husband [former NFL player Wesley Britt] and I wrestled with even getting in this race.”

“We believed that if our generation didn’t step up and fight for the next generation, we weren’t sure what was going to be left for our children,” she continued.

Britt said there was “no shortage” of issues to tackle when the Senate returns to Capitol Hill later this month.

“Obviously, reining in spending, making sure that we drive down inflation, becoming not only energy independent again, but energy dominant,” Britt told Fox News. “Unfortunately, right now in our country, whether we’re looking overseas at what’s going on there, here on our border or here at home, we have a lot in front of us.”

“But I believe in this nation,” she added. “I believe that it is my generation’s time to step up and to contribute, to make sure that the American dream is alive and well for the next generation.”

Actor Kevin Spacey was in the northern Italian city of Turin on Monday to receive a lifetime achievement award, teach a master class and introduce a screening of the 1999 film “American Beauty.”

The sold-out events were billed as Spacey’s first speaking engagements since #MeToo-era allegations derailed his soaring career. The two-time Academy Award winner lost his starring role on the Netflix series “House of Cards” and saw other opportunities dry up.

Spacey filmed his most recent movie, director Franco Nero’s “The Man Who Drew God,” in Turin. He is set to receive an award for contributing to the growth of cinema and to be interviewed about his career at the city’s National Museum of Cinema.

Spacey is scheduled to go on trial in London in June on a dozen charges alleging he sexually assaulted four men between 2001 and 2013, including when he was the artistic director at the city’s Old Vic theater. He has pleaded not guilty.

In October, a federal jury in a New York civil case found that Spacey, 63, did not sexually abuse actor Anthony Rapp when both were relatively unknown Broadway actors in 1986 and Rapp was 14 years old. The jurors deliberated a little more than an hour before deciding that Rapp, now 50, hadn’t proven his allegations.

Spacey previously faced allegations in Massachusetts that he groped a man at a bar. Prosecutors later dropped the charges.

A judge in Los Angeles in August approved an arbitrator’s decision to order Spacey to pay $30.9 million to the makers of “House of Cards” for violating his contract by sexually harassing crew members.

Gov. Tony Evers plans to appoint a former Democratic legislator to lead Wisconsin’s parole commission.

The governor’s office said Friday that he plans to pick former state Sen. Jon Erpenbach to serve as chairman of the commission. Erpenbach will replace Christopher Blythe. Evers’ spokesperson, Britt Cudaback, didn’t immediately respond to a message seeking details about why Blythe is leaving the position and when Erpenbach would take over.

Erpenbach will inherit a commission that was rocked by Republican criticism last year over then-chairman Jon Tate’s decision to parole a convicted murderer who had served less than half his sentence.

Douglas Balsewicz was convicted in 1997 of stabbing his 23-year-old wife to death and had served less than 25 years of his 80-year sentence when Tate decided to release him.

Evers, who was in the middle of a reelection campaign, asked Tate to rescind Balsewicz’s parole. Tate complied just days before Balsewicz was set to be released. Tate resigned in June at Evers’ request and the governor picked Blythe to replace him.

Erpenbach was first elected to the state Senate in 1999 and represented the Middleton area for 23 years. He decided not to seek reelection last year and retired from the body on Jan. 3.

Erpenbach said in a statement released by the governor’s office that the commission’s success depends on balancing the law, public safety and keeping dangerous people off the streets while supporting victims, survivors and their families.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Monday it recommended that China monitor excess mortality from COVID-19 to gain a fuller picture of the impact of the surge in cases there.

China said on Saturday that nearly 60,000 people with COVID-19 had died in hospital since it abandoned its zero-COVID policy last month, a big jump from the figures it reported prior to facing international criticism over its COVID-19 data.

“WHO recommends the monitoring of excess mortality, which provides us with a more comprehensive understanding of the impact of COVID-19,” the U.N. agency told Reuters in a statement when asked about China.

WHO added that there was no fixed time for another meeting with Chinese officials after WHO Director General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus spoke with Ma Xiaowei, director of China’s National Health Commission, at the weekend, but that it would continue working with China to provide advice and support.

After criticising Beijing for not being forthright about the scale of the outbreak, WHO said on Saturday that Chinese authorities had provided it with information on hospital deaths and outpatient care that allowed for a better understanding of the situation.

Lawrence Gostin, a professor at Georgetown Law in Washington, D.C., who closely follows WHO, said China’s decision to reveal more data had been down to “WHO prodding”.

“Getting more accurate death tolls is refreshing,” he said. “But it would be even more important to get full GSD (genetic sequence data) of circulating virus in China. That’s the really big global concern.”

Sam Hubbard may have saved the Cincinnati Bengals’ season at the goal line.

Baltimore Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley was rolling in the fourth quarter. He had a touchdown pass to Demarcus Robinson to tie the game at 17 and appeared to be getting ready to give his team the lead after a 25-yard run that got the team to within 2 yards of a touchdown.

However, Logan Wilson and Hubbard had different ideas.

Huntley went over the top of the line of scrimmage to try and get a touchdown but Wilson knocked the ball out of the quarterback’s hands and Hubbard recovered. The defensive lineman ran the ball 98 yards for a touchdown for one of the wildest touchdowns of the 2022-23 postseason so far.

The Bengals are the defending AFC champions and were looking to get past a tough division rival in the Ravens.

LeBron James reached another milestone on Sunday as the Los Angeles Lakers took on the Philadelphia 76ers.

With 5:47 left in the first quarter and the Lakers up 18-17, James got a pass from Russell Westbrook right in front of the three-point line and drained a jump shot. The two-pointer would put him in the 38,000-point club with only Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar ahead of him.

James finished the quarter with 16 points, four assists and three rebounds. He is only a couple hundred points away from Abdul-Jabbar’s record with 38,387 points.

The Lakers superstar talked about the possibility of breaking Abdul-Jabbar’s record back in October. He said he and the Basketball Hall of Famer had “no relationship” but explained what the mark meant to him.

Abdul-Jabbar had been critical of James in the past – particularly when it came to urging Americans to get the COVID-19 vaccine.

“Yellowstone” actor Gil Birmingham spoke at the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday about his experience working on the show with co-star Kevin Costner.

Birmingham, who plays Tribal Chairman Thomas Rainwater on the show, told reporters that Costner is “a major leader” when asked how it was working with the star actor.

“Kevin is [an] extraordinary talent, he has been for his whole career and it’s not any different on our show,” Birmingham said. “He’s a major leader, and we have such deep respect and appreciation for him.”

Birmingham further praised Costner as a mentor to the “Yellowstone” actors and staff. He also complimented Costner’s acting abilities for his portrayal of John Dutton.

Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman Sam Hubbard returned a fumble 98 yards for a touchdown and it helped his team defeat the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday night, 24-17, to advance to the divisional round of the NFL playoffs.

Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley fumbled the ball at the Bengals’ 2-yard line and Hubbard picked it up and ran it all the way back for the touchdown. The fourth-quarter play changed the trajectory of the game for the Bengals and helped them stave off their division rival.

Before that play, Huntley was driving and it appeared Baltimore was going to take the lead.

Huntley had thrown a touchdown pass to Demarcus Robinson to tie the game at 17 apiece and got a chance to take the lead after the defense forced the Bengals to punt – and he was on a roll.

He threw a 25-yard pass to Mark Andrews and then set the team up for a potential score with a 35-yard run. It was all Huntley until he tried to reach out at the goal line and the ball was punched about by Bengals linebacker Logan Wilson. Hubbard was on the ball and the rest was history.

Huntley’s last-ditch effort to win the game failed. He finished 17-for-29 with 226 passing yards, two touchdown passes and an interception.

Baltimore had a 10-9 lead over Cincinnati at halftime. Huntley found J.K. Dobbins for a 2-yard touchdown pass and then Justin Tucker made a 22-yard field goal before the whistle sounded. But their only score in the second half came on the touchdown pass to Robinson.

Dobbins led the Ravens with 62 yards on the ground. He also had four catches for 43 yards. Andrews led the team with five catches for 73 yards.

Joe Burrow and the Bengals got started early with an Evan McPherson 39-yard field goal in the first quarter. Burrow then found Ja’Marr Chase for a 7-yard touchdown pass.

Burrow ran the ball in on the goal line and then completed the 2-point conversion on a pass to Tee Higgins. Cincinnati was up 17-10 at that point. The Ravens would answer on the following drive.

Burrow was 23-of-32 with 209 passing yards and a touchdown pass to Chase. The star wide receiver had nine catches for 84 yards. Joe Mixon led the team with 39 rushing yards.

Cincinnati is back in the divisional round of the playoffs. The team will play the Buffalo Bills next week. Their matchup in Week 17 was ruled a no contest after Damar Hamlin collapsed on the field.

The team won the AFC Championship last season only to lose to the Los Angeles Rams in the Super Bowl.

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence led his team to a 27-point comeback for the 31-30 win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday night and did the obvious thing afterward – went to Waffle House.

Lawrence and a few Jaguars teammates were spotted at the eatery and received cheers when they walked in. He guided Jacksonville to its first playoff win since the 2017 season.

He also fired off a perfect tweet in the aftermath of the win, a meme of a high school football player who went viral a few years ago for his breakdown of his team’s own comeback victory.

Lawrence had 288 passing yards, four touchdown passes and four interceptions and led Jacksonville on a second-half comeback after being down by as many as 27 points. Three of Lawrence’s four touchdown passes came in the second half, including a 9-yard score to Christian Kirk. Riley Patterson kicked a 36-yard game-winning field goal.

Jacksonville will find out who they play next once Sunday is over. The Jaguars could potentially play a home game in the divisional round.

The family of an American jailed in the United Arab Emirates slammed the Biden administration for neglecting their family’s plea for help shortly after securing the release of WNBA star Brittney Griner. 

Zack Shahin has been held in a Dubai jail for 15 years, and is currently on his deathbed, his family says – but the Biden administration has dismissed their urgent calls for intervention to bring him home. 

“I feel like the fact that the United Arab Emirates helped broker the deal for Griner’s release was kind of a slap in the face to my family and I,” Ramy Shahin, Zack’s son, told co-host Rachel Campos Duffy Sunday.”And they gave my father’s case… not an ounce of respect.”

“He’s an American citizen that’s been abandoned by the Biden administration as well as the State Department,” he continued. “Nobody has answered our plea for help, and then seeing Brittney Griner get all the attention… maybe we’re not famous enough. Zack was abducted during a business meeting back in 2008 over fraud allegations. He was sentenced to more than five decades behind bars, in horrific conditions, but his family has stressed his innocence.

His family told ‘Fox & Friends Weekend’ that Zack has been fighting for his life in the hospital for the last three months, facing many surgeries, as his body continues to fight an infection.

Zack has reportedly had portions of his body cut away as the infection continues to take hold.

His family said they have pushed for government intervention through the Levinson Act, which provides resources to loved ones who have family members held abroad, but have been unsuccessful. 

Zack’s sister-in-law, Aida Dagher, said Zack’s case met a vast majority of the criteria under the bipartisan measure, but the government turned its cheek anyway. 

Zack’s mental and physical health have deteriorated greatly while in prison and his family said he won’t survive much longer.

In a final attempt to get Zack home, his family submitted mercy letters to the State Department on Nov. 23. The Shahins went back and forth with State Department officials for nearly two weeks, revising their letters until they were finally sent to the United Arab Emirates on Dec. 6. 

The Shahins didn’t know it, but the U.S. was simultaneously negotiating the release of WNBA star Brittney Griner, which the UAE helped facilitate.

“We had seven criteria out of the 11, and we did not get any form of response,” Dagher said. “We just got ignorance. In fact, we’re getting neglect and ignorance from the State Department, from the Biden administration. There is complete silence. We are demanding answers. Why was he denied? President Biden promised to take care of wrongfully detained Americans. He is very much wrongfully detained.”

“We don’t want to talk here about how innocent he is because he is… it took them nine and a half years to convict him,” she continued. “They had nothing against him. The big four auditing firms went through his accounts. There was nothing, no provisions, nothing.”

Zack is from Lebanon, but moved to Texas as a young child. He worked his way up through the corporate ladder at Pepsi, first becoming a truck driver in his home city of Houston. 

The last known person to witness Zack in jail, Martin Lonergan, detailed horrific “inhumane” and “degrading” conditions he is currently facing as he endures the fight for his life.

He said while he was there for 10 months. His bed was never changed, he didn’t have access to fresh air, bedding, and was not provided any nutrition. 

Martin Lonergan, who spent 279 days in the Dubai prison with Zack, said he lost a third of his body weight and developed a heart condition due to the inhumane conditions.

Lonergan said he lost around 77 pounds, himself, just while he was there. 

“Zach is dying… I don’t know how much longer he’ll last,” Martin Lonergan said. “His mental health is failing. He’s trying to take his own life several times recently. His conditions are so harsh. It’s a wonderful, amazing place for the five-star hotels, but down the road, there is a hell that you cannot imagine.”
