Arte Moreno decides he won't sell Angels in surprise announcement

Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno has had a change of heart, announcing Monday afternoon that his MLB franchise is no longer up for sale.

It’s a shocking move as many believed that a deal would be coming soon. But in a statement published on the Angels’ team Twitter page, Moreno explained how selling the franchise now just doesn’t feel right.

“During this process, it became clear that we have unfinished business and feel we can make a positive impact on the future of the team and the fan experience,” the statement read.

“We are grateful to Galatioto Sports Partners for their outstanding efforts throughout the process that allowed us to meet with a number of highly qualified individuals and groups who expressed strong interest in the Club. However, as discussions advanced and began to crystallize, we realized our hearts remain with the Angels, and we are not ready to part ways with the fans, players and our employees.”

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred also released a statement following Moreno’s announcement.

“Despite strong buyer interest in the Angels, Arte Moreno’s love of the game is most important to him. I am very pleased that the Moreno family has decided to continue owning the team,” the statement read via ESPN.

ANGELS OWNER ARTE MORENO TO EXPLORE SELLING TEAM

Galatioto Sports Partners were hired by Moreno to aid in the potential sale, and though it was exploratory at first, it appeared that the 76-year-old was ready to move on from the team after saying “now is the time” in a statement announcing the financial adviser hire.

During the MLB Winter Meetings, Manfred also said that interested buyers were looking into the team’s financials, which indicated the process was moving along nicely.

“The club would like to have the sale resolved before Opening Day,” Manfred said.

Sources told ESPN that prospective buyers were getting tours of Angel Stadium, but no formal bids were made public, if any.

It was predicted that Moreno could have sold the franchise for $2.5 billion, with Golden State Warriors majority owner Joe Lacob and L.A. Times owner Patrick Soon-Shiong among those interested.

All of that doesn’t matter now as Moreno is committed to bringing Angels baseball back to the forefront of the game.

When he purchased the team in 2003 from The Walt Disney Company for $183.5 million, the Halos had just won the World Series in 2002 after defeating the San Francisco Giants in seven games. Moreno was also the first Hispanic owner of a major sports team in the United States.

ANGELS’ GM SAYS NO TRADE FOR STAR PLAYER SHOHEI OHTANI THIS OFFSEASON

The Angels did well during the reign of manager Mike Scioscia from 2004 to 2009, with Los Angeles capturing five division titles in that span. Moreno was also well-liked by the fans, especially for showing the want for top talent like Vladimir Guerrero and, of course, lowering beer prices, among other fan experiences.

However, in recent years, Moreno has caught some heat for the way the Angels have been built. Despite having arguably the top two players in the game – center fielder Mike Trout and superstar hitter-pitcher Shohei Ohtani – the Angels haven’t had a winning record since the 2015 season when they went 85-77.

They haven’t made the playoffs since the 2014 season either, when they were swept in the American League Division Series by the Kansas City Royals.

There is also the death of Tyler Skaggs in 2019, which has been a black cloud over the organization for years. Eric Kay, a longtime public relations employee with the franchise, was sentenced to 22 years in prison as a result of Skaggs’ death, and a wrongful death lawsuit is still pending.

Moreno, though, continues to show his commitment to wanting a better product on the field for Angels fans. This offseason, he and GM Perry Minasian bolstered their rotation by signing Tyler Anderson to a three-year, $39 million deal. Minasian also traded for Gio Urshela to add infield help as well as Hunter Renfroe to give the lineup more power at the plate.

SHOHEI OHTANI HAS ‘NEGATIVE IMPRESSION’ OF SEASON AS ANGELS’ STRUGGLES CONTINUE, DESPITE STELLAR YEAR

The Angels are also banking on a comeback year for Anthony Rendon along with Trout and Ohtani’s consistent threat when penciled in.

Los Angeles finished 33 games behind the World Series-champion Astros in the AL West, finishing the 2022 season with a 73-89 record. Along with the Astros, the Seattle Mariners also made the postseason with a 90-72 record. And though the Oakland Athletics are in full rebuild mode, the Texas Rangers continued to spend money this offseason, most notably for starter Jacob deGrom, as they look to recapture postseason glory.

Former Labor Secretary mocked for blaming egg prices on corporate greed: 'Why weren't they greedy last year?'

Robert Reich, former Secretary of Labor during the Clinton administration and a prominent progressive academic, was criticized for blaming increased egg prices on corporate greed on Friday.

The price of eggs were up 60% in December from a year prior after nearly 58 million birds were affected by the Avian flu virus in 2022 and consumers have noticed. In the search for answers, Reich offered his own theory.

“Egg prices are up 60%. That’s absurd. People are paying up upwards of $6 and $7 for a dozen eggs. Why? Corporate greed. Cal-Maine, the largest egg producer in the US, is raking record profits — $198 million in its latest quarter. That’s a 65% increase from a year ago,” Reich tweeted.

SCALISE SHAMES WASHINGTON SPENDING SPREE: A ‘DRUNKEN SAILOR’ WOULD DO BETTER

Reich’s comments were met with disagreement by many on the right.

“I’ve noticed for Bob, that ‘corporate greed’ explains everything. And giving people like Bob more power fixes everything,” Nick Freitas, a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, tweeted.

Geoffry Miller, a psychology professor at the University of New Mexico, tweeted, “So, egg producers were somehow less greedy a year ago and suddenly became greedy? That makes no sense at all, and you know it.”

“Crazy how companies and universities randomly decide to get greedy. Is there a list somewhere where we can just see who’s next? Would save everyone a lot of time, not to mention make the study of economics moot. It’s all just corporate greed, after all,” tweeted the Libertarian Party of California.

LIBERALS BLAME CAPITALISM FOR SOARING EGG PRICES: ‘HAPPENING IN A HYPER-CAPITALIST COUNTRY’

Soho Forum director Gene Epstein replied to Reich’s tweet with numbers, “This chart tracks the rolling 12-month % change in egg prices in the Consumer Price Index, Jan 2000-Dec 2022. If we credit RBR’s warped view of price inflation, then egg producers’ ‘greed’ is quite cyclical. As recently as April 2021, they accepted an 8.9% price decline!”

Brian Wesbury, chief economist at First Trust Portfolios LP, agreed and slammed Reich.

“He’s not an economist anymore…and could never, ever run a business. Sad,” he tweeted.

Search underway for San Francisco State wrestler after jump into ocean during ‘polar plunge’

A San Francisco State University student-athlete went missing Thursday after jumping into the waters near Pacifica during a polar plunge, police announced.

According to authorities, Hamzah Alsaudi, 22, was hit by a large wave while he and two others were swimming at Esplanade Beach at approximately 10:30 a.m. The wave pulled Alsaudi away from the shoreline.

A search then quickly began for Alsaudi, who was a member of the school’s wrestling team. The North County Fire Authority is assisting the Coast Guard in the search and rescue efforts.

How to watch the 'Green Comet' as it makes closest approach in 50K years

A green comet shooting through the morning skies is scheduled to make its closest approach to Earth at the beginning of next month.

Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) was first spotted in March of last year, when it was already inside Jupiter’s orbit. It’s reportedly making its closest approach in 50,000 years.

NASA has said that it will make its closest approach to our planet on Feb. 2.

If this comet continues its current trend in brightness, it should be easily visible with a small telescope or binoculars

‘Scooby-Doo’ spinoff ‘Velma’ jokes about sexualizing teens as woke series endures blistering ratings, reviews

HBO and actress Mindy Kaling‘s “Scooby Doo” spin-off series “Velma” added more controversial content to its repertoire in its latest episode, this time treating sexualizing kids as a joke.

During episode four, titled, “Velma Makes a List,” the new series makes multiple jokes about children in a sexual manner. The first involves the local town mayor lusting over attractive high school teenage girls, and the other involves lead character Velma’s impression of young boys and their talent for drawing male genitalia.

After Velma is tasked with thwarting a local murderer who seems to be targeting only pretty high school girls, the middle-aged town sheriff suggests that she rank the hottest girls in her school and help them be less attractive to save their lives.

HBO "Scooby Doo" spinoff "Velma" has been annihilated by critics since it debuted earlier this month.

HBO “Scooby Doo” spinoff “Velma” has been annihilated by critics since it debuted earlier this month.

Though the town mayor’s salivating reaction to Velma’s makeover reveal shows she has failed in her task, and gives “Velma” viewers an uncomfortable scene of a middle-aged white man lusting over underage girls.

Talking to the mayor and sheriff during the reveal, Velma says, “Mayor Dave, Sheriff Cogburn, I want you to remember this moment. For far too long, we have told girls that pain is beauty. Well, today you will see these painfully beautiful girls transform from ‘Damn’ to ‘Eh…’”

As noted by NewsBusters, once Velma reveals the girls, who don’t appear to have changed their appearance in any way, the mayor says, “Ooh, they are so hot. Daddy likey…Wait. You were supposed to do the opposite. What the h—, Velma?”

In another scene from the same episode, Velma attempts to make a comment on sexism to her friend but accidentally makes a bizarre statement on little kids and genitalia.

She says, “Our whole lives, girls are told by guys there’s a right way to be hot, and I’m not it. Guys even teach us to be ashamed of our own bodies. Every little kid knows how to draw a penis, but make a little kid draw a vɑgina, and what happens?” Her friend Norville replies, “You go to jail?” to which she says, “Exacty.”

The R-rated humor is just the latest stunt from the HBO animated series, which has already been the subject of many headlines for flipping the concept of the beloved “Scooby-Doo” Mystery Gang on its head in an attempt to appeal to modern audiences.

The show has been blasted for its over-the-top woke themes. For example, it has race-swapped several of the main characters, most notably Shaggy, who is now an African American male named “Norville.” It also features lesbian scenes between the titular character, who is now of Asian/Pacific Island descent, and Daphne, who is now half Asian, half White.

In addition, the series devotes story beats to portraying former beloved character Fred as a rich White male who gets taken down a peg because of his privilege.

As Fox News Digital previously reported, “Velma” also “features limbs being severed, one of the main characters going to a strip club with her dad, and two teenage boys making out at their high school.”

These elements have added up to a show that has been annihilated by critics. Fox noted, “Though the critic reviews are bad, the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is even worse with most giving it a half a star (out of five). One viewer called it ‘so insulting to the Scooby-Doo fan base.’ Another observed, ‘Very current year. This culture sucks so bad.’”

Reviews have been so bad that some have wondered whether the show was a conspiracy to annoy right-wingers. Forbes contributor Paul Tassi mentioned this notion, writing, “Velma is so bad in fact, that it’s spawning conspiracy theories that creator Mindy Kaling made what is essentially a parody of what the right wing thinks left wing comedy is like.”

The Daily Mail even reported that “Velma” is “now the third worst rated TV show in IMBD history, having aired just four episodes of its first season.”

Fox News Digital spoke to conservative Hollywood and entertainment critic Christian Toto about why creators would push a raunchy Scooby-Doo spinoff, just for it to get slammed by audiences. He said, “Hollywood artists don’t appreciate the frustration many feel about these woke makeovers. In their circles, diversity and social justice are vital tools in their storytelling kits.”

Toto – who runs the popular conservative film and entertainment commentary site Hollywoodintoto.com – explained that bad reviews entice producers to double down on their creative decisions.

He said, “What’s more interesting is that when confronted with angry viewers the response is often to double down and slam critics as racist, sexist, etc. We saw that with the backlash against ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ on Amazon Prime.”

Though Toto did acknowledge that “audiences in turn, often overreact. They’re angry at not just one show but a cultural landscape that pushes these reboots. So they lash out on properties like ‘Velma’ by slamming them on TV review sites and social media.”

Hilaria Baldwin ripped for 'beyond offensive' accent while talking to paparazzi

Social media reactions ripped Hilaria Baldwin for continuing to use an “offensive” Spanish accent after she spoke with paparazzi this week.

Twitter users immediately seized on fresh video to once more lambaste Baldwin for her accent, with one user writing, “It’s beyond offensive at this point that she continues with this Spanish accent.”

“Regardless of the chaos of her mind and this situation – you’re not Spanish,” the user wrote.

The 37-year-old yoga/wellness expert faced widespread criticism in Dec. 2020 when it came to light that she was born in Boston, and not Spain, as she had implied. Many also criticized her for allegedly faking a Spanish accent – a criticism that continues to follow her to this day.

ALEC BALDWIN FACES INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER CHARGES: A LOOK AT THE ‘RUST’ STAR’S HISTORY IN THE HEADLINES

Following the initial scandal, Baldwin wrote on Instagram that her parents “raised my brother and me with two cultures, American and Spanish, and I feel a true sense of belonging to both.” She said she should have “been more clear” and apologized for the controversy, but she maintained she had a “deep connection to two cultures.”

Baldwin courted further criticism this week when she spoke up in defense of her husband, actor Alec Baldwin, after the New Mexico courts announced a charge of involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of “Rust.” Baldwin told the paparazzi to leave her family alone and “let this play out.”

“I’m going to tell you what I’m going to say, you’re not going to ask me questions,” Baldwin told paparazzi Friday. “I want you guys to realize we have seven kids, and you being here to escort them to school and to be there when they come home is not good.”

“So on a human level, you know I’m not going to say anything to you. You know that,” she continued, speaking with a Spanish accent. “So please, leave my family in peace, and let this all play out, okay?”

Another user criticized Baldwin for her accent even as they expressed sympathy for the family

“I saw people feeling badly for her being stalked by [paparazzi], and of course that’s valid, but the AAAAACCENT my GOD,” the user wrote, adding that others “are completely correct” in criticizing Baldwin.

Another user who was stunned that “she’s still doing it” even after it was “revealed” that she wasn’t from Spain.

Daily Blast Live cohost Tory Shulman mockingly asked, “How do you say – you’re from Boston?” in reference to when Baldwin said she couldn’t remember the word for cucumber during a cooking segment on The Today Show.

One user, claiming to be Spanish, said that Baldwin had a “pretty convincing Madrid accent,” adding, “Not saying that it’s 100% fake, just that, as a Spaniard, it would have 100% fooled me lol.”

But another user chimed in that Baldwin and actor Austin Butler, who recently won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Elvis, “need some kind of support group for people who can’t turn off the fake voice.”

Baldwin, who goes by Hilaria but revealed her real name is Hillary, previously apologized for the scandal and tried to correct some of the “misconceptions” that she said people had picked up about her, saying that she “spent time in Boston and Spain,” but that her family “now lives in Spain.”

(CyberGuy.com)

SURPRISINGLY, THIS APP IS CAUSING NEARLY 50% OF MACOS MALWARE

What does this malware do?

The malware known as IcedID has been put into action through threat actors actively spreading it by using modified versions of the Zoom application. This has affected tons of businesses, as Zoom has grown immensely in popularity, especially among companies that transitioned to working from home at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The malware acts as a loader (a type of malware that is used to install other malware onto a computer) by stealing private information from these companies and dumping additional malware onto their employees’ computers.

This means that it is stealing sensitive information and also potentially installing other harmful software that can cause further damage. This can cause significant harm to the affected businesses, as they may lose valuable information and suffer from additional security breaches or system disruptions.

Aside from being a loader, IcedID can also download additional modules from the internet and deliver other malware families, making it significantly difficult for the user to get rid of the malware once it’s planted into a computer. Once downloaded, its primary purpose is to steal private banking credentials.

How does the malware spread?

The most common way IcedID had been spread among users is by appearing via spam emails. The malware is hidden in email attachments found within malicious office files. However, these Zoom hackers tried a new technique that many were unprepared for this time around.

SIMPLE IPHONE HACK MAKES READING EVERY APP EASIER

They use a phishing website called explorezoom.com to deliver the malware. This is a fake  website disguised as an official Zoom domain whose sole purpose is to deliver the IcedID malware. The page tells users that to use Zoom, they must download a file called ZoomInstallerFull.exe. The file will download the actual Zoom application to distract the user from realizing that IcedID malware is also being downloaded onto their device.

How can I protect myself from IcedID?

The best way to protect yourself from any type of malware is by installing quality antivirus protection onto your device. You can install this on your phone, tablet and laptop.  It would be a good idea for you to suggest this to your company if you’re someone who works from home and uses a device provided by your employer.

New Titans GM recalls when wife almost dumped him for wanting to join a front office: 'La La Land'

Ran Carthon was introduced as the Tennessee Titans‘ general manager on Friday, a life goal at least 20 years in the making.

Carthon was a running back at the University of Florida in the spring of 2003 when he told his girlfriend (now his wife) he wanted to be a general manager of an NFL team eventually.

Well, those dreams were a little too far-fetched for her, says Carthon.

In fact, his career goals alone almost cost the couple their entire relationship.

LAURA INGRAHAM: Rejecting basic standards of merit never works out

Fox News host Laura Ingraham explains how woke schools are fighting against merit to promote diversity and equity and what this means for children on “The Ingraham Angle.”

LAURA INGRAHAM: It’s not just laziness or sloppiness at play here. In our schools, in our corporate boardrooms and in politics, what’s best about America is slowly being erased, replaced by a slavish devotion to equity and diversity. These concepts are being relentlessly promoted in woke curricula from kindergarten on up. In high school, we see how evil this really is. Consider what just happened in Northern Virginia, where school administrators purposely withheld from students applying to college the fact that they had, in fact, been recognized as National Merit Scholars. All because the administrators didn’t want to hurt the feelings of the students who didn’t get the scholarships. What does this mean? Well, this means that the students were punished by woke schools because the students excelled.

Instead of keeping the bar high to encourage hard work by students across the country, schools dropped standards, dropped standardized test requirements. And to this day, those tests remain optional for many colleges. Now, while this helped increase the pool of diverse applicants, it does nothing to change the fact that we have generations of minority students who’ve been cheated by liberal educators. Last October, a report revealed the shocking state of things for Illinois third-graders. Yet measuring objective merit, as they did in that study itself, the left argues, is racist — ridiculous. George W. Bush was right when he called this the soft bigotry of low expectations.

Priyanka Chopra is looking back on the first year of her baby daughter’s life, admitting she and her husband Nick Jonas didn’t know if Malti would “make it” while they kept vigil over her in the neonatal intensive care unit for three months.

“I’ve been really protective of this chapter of my life with my daughter. Because it’s not about my life only. It’s hers too,” Chopra told British Vogue for its February issue. The article was published just after her daughter’s first birthday.

Chopra and Jonas’ daughter was born on Jan. 15 last year via a surrogate a full trimester prematurely.

“I was in the OR [operating room] when she came out,” the “Quantico” actress told Vogue during an interview at her house while playing with Malti. “She was so small, smaller than my hand. I saw what the intensive-care nurses do. They do God’s work. Nick and I were both standing there as they intubated her. I don’t know how they even found what they needed [in her tiny body] to intubate her.”

She said for the next three months they spent every day with Malti on her or his chest before they were able to bring her home.

“I didn’t know if she would make it or not,” she explained.

Malti is now “healthy and thriving,” Chopra celebrated, but said as a “NICU mom” she still struggles to shed those worries about her daughter’s health.

“The first time she had a solid morsel [of food] she gagged and I thought I’d killed her,” she said, adding that her mother and in-laws have been extremely supportive with the baby, explaining that things like that are normal in babies.

“But because I’m a NICU mommy, the stakes are so high,” she said “And I have to shed that. I will.”

“We had to celebrate,” he said. “She went through a pretty wild journey in the early part of her life, so we had to celebrate in style. She’s one. She’s beautiful. It’s amazing — the best.”
