Captain of boys' soccer team rescued in Thailand cave in 2018 dead at 17

The captain of the boys’ soccer team that was dramatically rescued from a flooded cave in Thailand in 2018 has died in England while attending a sports academy, reports say.

Duangpetch “Dom” Promthep of the “Wild Boars” team was one of 12 players who along with their coach became trapped in the Tham Luang cave during an unexpected rainstorm in June that year.

Faced with tremendous challenges, a team of the world’s most experienced divers navigated the maze of flooded, narrow cave tunnels. The divers were joined by Thai forces and more than 10,000 volunteers to complete the daring rescue mission.

“Duangpetch Promthep has now gone to another world,” Supatpong Methigo, a Buddhist monk who taught the team in Thailand’s northern Chiang Rai province, wrote on Facebook, according to Reuters. “I hope he will be reborn and become my student again in the next life.”

Promthep, 17, was found unconscious in his dorm room at the soccer academy he was attending in Leicestershire since late 2022, the BBC reports. He later died at a local hospital.

“I am saddened to hear that Dom Duangpetch Phromthep, captain of the Wild Boars football team from the 2018 Tham Luang cave incident, has died in the UK,” British Ambassador to Thailand Mark Gooding tweeted. “My condolences to Dom’s family and friends.”

The cause of his death was not immediately clear, but Leicestershire Police told the BBC it is not being classified as suspicious.

“I wanted to see his dream realized … but rest well now Dom,” Kiatisuk Senamuang, a former coach whose foundation helped Promthep get a scholarship at the Brooke House College Football Academy, said in an Instagram post, according to Reuters.

The principal of the college, Ian Smith, said in a statement obtained by Sky News that “”We unite in grief with all of Dom’s family, friends, former teammates and those involved in all parts of his life, as well as everyone affected in any way by this loss in Thailand and throughout the college’s global family.”

Former teammates who were rescued with Promthep in the cave also are paying tribute.

Super Bowl hot mic catches Jason and Travis Kelce with mother Donna on field: 'I love you, Momma!'

Donna Kelce, the mother of Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce and Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce, knew Super Bowl LVII was going to be hard to watch. While she was cheering every time someone had the ball because they both played on offense, she knew one of her sons would come up short while the other celebrated the victory.

Thanks to some hot mics during the 38-35 win for the Chiefs at State Farm Stadium, we were able to hear how Donna reacted once she hit the turf with red and yellow confetti falling from the rafters.

As such, her younger son, Travis, was the first one she found.

“Momma!” Travis yelled as he hugged his mother tight.

“I’m so happy for you,” she said in his ear.

“Ahh, I love you mom,” Travis responded. “How about this? You had the week of your life, I had the year of my life.”

Then, it was time to find Jason, who already embraced his brother despite losing to him in the game. The interaction was nothing but sportsmanship and brotherly love, as they both said how proud they were of the other.

“I love you. Good job. It was so fun to watch you all week,” Donna said while choked up. You could tell Jason was also getting a bit choked up as well, as he kissed his mother on the cheek.

“Go celebrate with Trav,” Jason Kelce said as he walked away.

The emotions were running high all week for Donna, who been involved since opening night last Monday. She surprised her sons while they took questions, and it wasn’t the first time she had a microphone in front of her.

Being the first mother to have two sons playing in the same Super Bowl made her a hot topic.

Patrick Mahomes jumps into Chiefs-Eagles Twitter battle after Super Bowl LVII

What started as a Valentine’s Day troll by JuJu Smith-Schuster to James Bradberry has turned into a Twitter beef where Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes got involved.

Mahomes was the latest to jump in on a back-and-forth exchange between players on the Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday following Super Bowl LVII.

It began with Smith-Schuster sending an ultimate troll to Bradberry, creating a Valentine’s Day card that read “I’ll hold you when it matters most” with a photo of Bradberry on it.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, everybody,” Smith-Schuster captioned it.

The troll is in reference to Bradberry’s crucial holding penalty that was called late in the fourth quarter that ultimately led the Chiefs to kick a game-winning field goal in the 38-35 victory at State Farm Stadium on Sunday.

Bradberry admitted after the game that he did indeed tug Smith-Schuster’s jersey, making it the right call despite many believing the refs should’ve swallowed their whistle there.

Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown had his teammate’s back, though.

“First off congratulations. Y’all deserve it,” Brown wrote on Twitter. “This is lame. You was on the way out the league before mahomes resurrected your career on your 1 year deal Tik-Tok boy. He admitted that he grabbed you but don’t act like your like that or ever was. But congratulations again!”

Bradberry would later send a subtweet saying “ALL-PRO #APJB,” in reference to making second-team All-Pro after a fantastic first season in Philly.

But then Mahomes got involved with a subtweet of his own.

Nets' Ben Simmons faces ridicule after passing up open lay up: 'Borderline unplayable'

Brooklyn Nets star Ben Simmons faced renewed scrutiny on Monday night as the team lost to the New York Knicks for the first time since January 2020, 124-106.

Simmons, who is in the middle of a five-year, $177.2 million contract, came off the bench and played 13 minutes as he tries to navigate knee soreness and outside criticism about failing to live up to the money he’s earning. But the voices didn’t go away during the game against the Knicks.

In the first quarter, Simmons received a bounce pass from Cam Johnson and had a lane to the basket. Instead of finishing at the hoop, he dumped the ball off to Nic Claxton at the last moment. Claxton tried to get through the Knicks defenders but missed the shot.

NBA fans were left befuddled.

“It’s going to be some work that we have to do,” Vaughn told reporters, via SNY. “Because you just take a look at what the lineups could potentially look like. You put another big next to Ben, then you got to figure out what the spacing is around him. Then if you put a playmaker next to him, then you got to figure out what Ben looks like without the basketball. Then if you go small with Ben, then you have to figure out can you rebound enough with him.

“So, the challenges are ahead of us. We’ll look them head on. We’ll figure it out. We have the personnel to figure it out. Whether it is me mixing and matching throughout different pieces of the game, and allowing him to have a group and run with a group, that part we’ll figure out, but you see the challenges that lie ahead.”

Simmons told reporters Monday morning before the game he was unsure what his role was.

“Everything’s been changing all year, so it’s hard to really understand what’s going on, but hopefully we find some rhythm and consistency,” he said, via the New York Daily News. “It’s different. Michigan State University shooter Anthony McRae found dead after caller's tip to police, officials say

A tip from a member of the public led Lansing law enforcement to the man who opened fire on Michigan State University, killing three students and critically wounding five more, police revealed Tuesday.

Anthony McRae, 43, was located “shortly after” the on-campus shooting, and was found to have died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in an off-campus area within hours.

“It was a caller’s tip that led law enforcement to that suspect in the city of Lansing,” Michigan State University Police and Public Safety Deputy Chief Chris Rozman said Tuesday.

Police said late Monday three people were killed and five more were critically wounded after the gunman opened fire inside one of the college’s on-campus academic halls.

Four of the five surviving wounded victims required surgery. Officials have not yet identified the victims, but said they would be doing so later Tuesday.

McRae is not affiliated with the university, and police are still working to “ascertain his place of residence”, Rozman said. Public records identify McRae as being a Lansing resident.

Investigators currently have “absolutely no idea” of his motive, Rozman said.

According to police, McRae opened fire shortly before 8:30 p.m. inside Michigan State University’s Berkey Hall, an academic building in the northern portion of campus.

“We had officers in that building within minutes and in that building they encountered several students who were injured,” Rozman said. He confirmed that two of the students were slain inside Berkey Hall, along with several of the surviving victims.

The university ordered its students to shelter in place shortly thereafter.

Laundrie attorney files new motion to dismiss lawsuit from Gabby Petito's parents

FIRST ON FOX: Attorneys for Brian Laundrie’s parents have filed a new motion to dismiss a lawsuit from Gabby Petito’s family that accuses them and their lawyer Steve Bertolino of inflicting emotional distress following her strangling death in the Wyoming wilderness.

Joseph Petito and Nichole Schmidt filed the lawsuit against Christopher and Roberta Laundrie in March and, in their second amended complaint in December, asked the court to add Bertolino.

Central to the civil lawsuit is an excerpt from the Sept. 14, 2021 statement that Bertolino released to the media regarding what was then believed to be a search for a missing person. The judge denied a prior motion to dismiss last summer.

The full statement is as follows:

GABBY PETITO UPDATE: NEWLY RELEASED HIGH-RES PHOTO SHOWS INJURIES FROM UTAH DOMESTIC CALL

Gabby Petito's family released this selfie photo with blood on her face their lawyers say was taken shortly before an Aug. 12, 2021 traffic stop in Moab, Utah. A witness had called police to report a domestic assault.

“This is understandably an extremely difficult time for both the Petito family and the Laundrie family.

It is our understanding that a search has been organized for Miss Petito in or near Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. On behalf of the Laundrie family it is our hope that the search for Miss Petito is successful and that Miss Petito is reunited with her family.

On the advice of counsel the Laundrie family is remaining in the background at this juncture and will have no further comment.”

The lawsuit argues that the statement was “insensitive, cold-hearted and outrageous” and inflicted emotional distress because it led the family to believe Petito could still be alive when, allegedly, the Laundries knew she was already dead.

Read the motion (App users go here)

“Two days [after Bertolino’s statement], the attorney for the Petito family, Richard Stafford from New York, issued a statement to the Laundries in which he said, ‘We believe you know the location of where Brian left Gabby,'” the motion, written by attorney Matt Luka, continues. “Clearly, at that time Plaintiffs did not believe Mr. Bertolino’s statement meant that Ms. Petito was still alive.”

An FBI-led search effort uncovered her remains at a Wyoming campground on Sept. 18.

The new motion to dismiss also includes two new arguments from the Laundrie lawyers.

“1) Mr. Bertolino’s statements are privileged, so the Laundries cannot be liable for them,” the filing reads. “And 2) the allegations against Mr. Bertolino render the allegations against the Laundries implausible.”

The parties were due back in court Tuesday morning.

Laundrie left his parents’ house on Sept. 13 and is believed to have killed himself in the Myakkahatchee Creek Environmental Park. Investigators didn’t find his remains until Oct. 20 after floodwater receded.

Near his remains, the FBI recovered a notebook that contained a handwritten confession.

I ended her life,” he wrote. “I thought it was merciful, that it is what she wanted, but I see now all the mistakes I made. I panicked. I was in shock.”

The Teton County coroner ruled Petito’s death a homicide by manual strangulation and blunt-force trauma. Laundrie left her in the brush near a campsite they had shared in late August, then drove home from Wyoming to Florida in her van, arriving at his parents’ house on Sept. 1.

In the 10 days between Laundrie’s return home and the missing person report, he went camping with his family at a beach south of St. Petersburg and said nothing publicly about her whereabouts.

Just days earlier, the couple was involved in a domestic violence stop in Utah – where a witness reported seeing Laundrie hitting Petito and trying to steal her phone outside a grocery store.

Police ultimately split the couple up for the night and filed no charges – a decision that led Petito’s parents to file a separate wrongful death lawsuit against the Moab Police Department.

Native American attorney named as top legal advisor to Interior Secretary Deb Haaland

A Native American attorney who oversaw New Mexico’s Indian Affairs Department has been tapped to serve as a top legal adviser to U.S. Department of the Interior Secretary Deb Haaland.

The department announced the appointment of Lynn Trujillo as senior counsel to the secretary Friday.

Trujillo is a tribal member of Sandia Pueblo on the outskirts of Albuquerque and has ties to Acoma and Taos pueblos. Haaland is the first Native American to serve as a U.S. Cabinet secretary.

She also promoted the pursuit of justice for missing and murdered Indigenous people across New Mexico and agreements authorizing tribal cannabis programs to spur economic development in Native American communities. New Mexico legalized recreational cannabis sales last year amid concerns about conflicts with federal prohibition.

Trujillo previously worked as a national Native American coordinator at the U.S. Department of Agriculture on its rural development programs and as general counsel to Sandia Pueblo.
