What does the drone do?

The drone, known as the TJ-FlyingFish, was developed by a team of scientists from China’s Shanghai Research Institute for Intelligent Autonomous Systems, Tongji University, and the Unmanned Systems Research Group at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

Aquatic flying drone stats

It is an amphibious drone that can both swim underwater and shoot into the sky and act as a quadcopter.

  • 3.6 pounds weight
  • 6 minutes hovering time
  • 6.5 feet per second underwater swimming speed
  • Runs without human intervention on artificial intelligence only
  • Developed by Chinese

The drone weighs just 3.6 pounds and can hover in mid-air for 6 minutes. When it’s underwater, it can swim at speeds of 6.5 feet per second. Plus, the dual air and underwater drone does not need a human to operate it.

Its operating system is run completely by artificial intelligence. Those in control of the AI system can give the drone a mission, and it will accomplish it autonomously without the need for human intervention.

What good can come from an amphibious flying drone?

Drones can be helpful for all kinds of reasons, and as this one can both fly and swim underwater, it’s safe to assume that it can be used for some great missions.

Some missions for the technology could include taking aerial and aquatic surveys, remote sensing, and search-and-rescue operations.

Professor Ben Chen from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and his colleagues will be presenting a paper on their research on the drone at the 2023 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation in London this May.

So until that happens, we’ll be watching to see what kind of other work the TJ-FlyingFish may be used for.

Maria Bartiromo discusses Biden's foreign policy agenda with Reps. Tenney, Arrington, Gooden, and more

SEN ERIC SCHMITT (R-MO) SLAMS THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION’S RESPONSE TO THE OHIO TRAIN DERAILMENT

MARIA BARTIROMO: I want to get your take on the Ohio train derailment response as well. For two weeks, FEMA’s said they were not going to help Ohio because the damages were not eligible, which was just mind boggling. You are on the Commerce Committee. What kind of response should the country be having to the potential cancerous chemicals that were dispersed? And how worried are you that that goes into other states beyond Ohio?

SEN ERIC SCHMITT: Well, I think there’s a complete disconnect here when you hear the president talking about sending American tax dollars to Ukraine to help pay for their pensions. And he does nothing about the millions of people who stream across our southern border distributing fentanyl. Human trafficking and crime across the country. It is completely out of touch to not address this. And people to judge was a no show this week in our committee to talk about FAA problems they had in January with the travel system across the country. He’s been a no show in Ohio. And so the American people are right to be upset about this. They demand answers. They demand a presence by this administration to know that they’re going to take care of these issues. But I think it’s part and parcel. A lot of these folks who claim to be environmentalists don’t care much about the environment. They care about climate alarmism to scare people so they can gather more and more power and control. That’s what this is about. But again, the biden administration and p bu to judge specifically has absolutely failed on this ohio environmental disaster.

REPS LANCE GOODEN (R-TX) AND JODEY ARRINGTON (R-TX) REACT TO SEC. BLINKEN’S ‘SOFT ON CHINA’ RESPONSE TO PROVOCATIONS

MARIA BARTIROMO: Lance Gooden. Told him it could never happen again. I’m sure the Chinese are shaking in their boots. What is your response to the way Biden is handling China?

REP LANCE GOODEN: Well, he’s been absent ever since the Afghanistan withdrawal, and his actions there have given China the green light to go forward with what they’ve been doing. This president of our country is weak and the president of China is very strong. He’s a ruthless dictator. He plays to win. He’s playing the long game. The Chinese civilization has been around for a lot longer than ours, and they are looking toward the long game, which is why they’re sending their citizens across our southern border. They’re sending drugs in our community to kill our children and our families. And they don’t care what Joe Biden’s protege in Munich says. They don’t respect him. I suspect there’ll be more of the same Jody Arrington.

BLINKEN ISSUES WARNING TO CHINA ABOUT SPY CRAFT IN ‘CONFRONTATIONAL’ MEETING WITH COUNTERPART

REP JODEY ARRINGTON: We have a saying, Lance and I and the Texans that we represent all hat no cattle. This guy is all talk. Blinken, Biden. They’re projecting weakness. We’re not respected by our adversaries. We’re not trusted by our friends. This is the new sort of world order because of the Biden projection of weakness there. Our adversaries are emboldened. And it’s it’s it’s trade related. It’s border related and it’s spy balloons. It’s collecting data. It’s buying up land around strategic assets. The list goes on. The bottom line is they don’t respect our president and commander in chief.

PETER SCHWEIZER TELLS MARIA THAT THE EVIDENCE IS MOUNTING AGAINST THE BIDEN FAMILY’S BUSINESS TIES TO CHINA

MARIA BARTIROMO: Yeah, John Ratcliffe told us so right before the election that what those 51 had written was not true. But look, you both have done incredible reporting on this subject. Peter, do you see any hope of justice here?

HUNTER BIDEN, AN OBAMA AMBASSADOR AND CHINESE BUSINESSMEN: A ‘VERY GOOD RELATIONSHIP

PETER SCHWEIZER: Yeah, I do. Look, I think the investigation is ongoing. I think the evidence continues to mount and the Biden team will not answer a basic question, which is when it comes to China, for example, you had three Chinese businessmen that funneled tens of millions of dollars to you. Each one of those three, Che Fang, Henry Zhao, Chairman, ye all had direct, abiding and deep ties to Chinese intelligence when they were arranging these deals for the Bidens. And that’s not me saying that. That’s according to Hong Kong corporate records. They were business partners with the vice minister of state security who was responsible for foreign recruitment of spies. They were business partners with a former family of the director of the Ministry of State Security, which runs the entire spy apparatus. In the case of Chairman Yee, they actually worked as part of the spy apparatus. So what I would say is, you know, some attractive journalist needs to go to Jim Clapper and these other 50 intelligence experts and ask them, does this not have the hallmark of a Chinese intelligence operation? And I think if they give you an honest answer, the answer would be yes.

Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) on how the Biden administration is ignoring to report on the Iranian regime.

Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) on how the Biden administration is ignoring to report on the Iranian regime. (Fox News)

REP CLAUDIA TENNEY (R-NY) ON HOW THE BIDEN ADMINISTRATION IS IGNORING TO REPORT ON THE IRANIAN REGIME

MARIA BARTIROMO: Congresswoman, I want to get your take on Iran. You have been very supportive of the women in Iran amidst all of these protests. You sent a letter to the administration slamming it for failing to comply with a mandated reporting requirements on Iran’s military capabilities. Tell us what you want to know.

CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP

REP TENNEY: Well, first of all, the NDAA, the National Defense Authorization Act, requires that the Biden administration disclose to the American people and to the Congress what is happening with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. That’s the Iranian military and what their weapons situation is. Are they continuing to arm Hezbollah, the Houthis, unknown terrorist organizations? And they failed to report it’s been over 240 days, I believe, since they were supposed to report, and they failed to do that. And that’s critical to know what’s happening with Iran. The biggest disruptor of peace and potential peace in the Middle East and and the biggest state sponsor of terrorism across the nations in the Middle East. So we’re demanding that the Biden administration provide that information. And we we just have received no response to date.

Pete Buttigieg ripped for being 'no-show' in toxic Ohio train derailment: 'Complete disconnect'

More than two weeks after the toxic Ohio train derailment, the Biden administration is taking flak for how it has handled the toxic spill after refusing to approve a FEMA disaster declaration.

Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., is one of the White House’s critics, and he joined “Sunday Morning Futures” to discuss how the administration’s handling has indicated a “complete disconnect” from the American people.

“I think there’s a complete disconnect here when you hear the president talking about sending American tax dollars to Ukraine to help pay for their pensions, and he does nothing about the millions of people who stream across our southern border distributing fentanyl, human trafficking and crime across the country,” Schmitt told Maria Bartiromo. “It is completely out of touch to not address this.”

WHITE HOUSE EXPLAINS WHY IT TURNED DOWN DISASTER RELIEF FOR OHIO

“And Pete Buttigieg was a no-show this week in our committee to talk about FAA problems they had in January with the travel system across the country,” he continued. “He’s been a no show in Ohio, and so the American people are right to be upset about this. They demand answers. They demand a presence by this administration to know that they’re going to take care of these issues.”

The Biden administration has said the crisis in East Palestine does not meet legal requirements for a FEMA declaration, even though the agency has deployed resources to the city.

“What East Palestine needs is much more expansive than what FEMA can provide,” a Biden administration official told Fox News Digital. “FEMA is on the frontlines when there is a hurricane or tornado. This situation is different.”

FEMA sent officials to the town in order to aid in ongoing assessments as residents remain concerned about the air and water quality following the spill.

Water from the city of East Palestine has been tested and is considered safe, but residents using well water have been encouraged to use bottled water

And even with hundreds of air samples from homes in the area indicating no present toxins, critics have been quick to note the Biden administration’s apparent delayed handling of the chaos.

“That’s what this is about, but again, the Biden administration and Pete Buttigieg specifically has absolutely failed on this Ohio environmental disaster,” he continued.

The Norfolk Southern Railroad freight train originally derailed on Feb. 3, but it wasn’t until three days later that officials conducted a controlled burn of the toxins inside the cars in order to avoid an explosion.

Following the burn, black smoke tainted the community as toxins like vinyl chloride, hydrogen chloride and phosgene filled the air.

Kim Kardashian fans suggest she's behind UFO sightings after alien-themed SKIMS ads: 'She knows something'

Kim Kardashian debuted her new alien-themed SKIMS swimwear ads amid a spate of recent UFO sightings in the United States — and now the reality star’s fans are questioning the curious timing.

The 42-year-old television personality unveiled her new swimwear campaign, which was shot by “Spring Breakers” director Harmonie Korine, in a post that she shared to Instagram on Thursday.

“SKIMS SWIM BY HARMONY KORINE launching Feb 21,” Kardashian wrote in the caption, adding an alien emoji.

The extraterrestrial-inspired campaign comes after three unidentified flying objects were shot down over Alaska, Canada and Michigan last week. Days earlier, a Chinese spy balloon that had traversed the United States for a week was brought down by a missile off the coast of South Carolina.

Amid all the inexplicable activity in the sky and with few immediate concrete answers, speculation that the UFOs were sent by aliens became rampant on social media.

After Kardashian posted her new SKIMS ads, fans flocked to the comments section to blame the UFO sightings on the businesswoman.

“All these UFOS shot down to prep us for the skims swim launch, it all makes sense now,” one follower wrote.

“So this is why we’ve been seeing UFOs lately,” another Instagram user mused.

“Kimmy rescued some of the aliens before their UFO got shot down…protect ET at all costs,” added a fan.

“Is she getting us ready for aliens now,” one social media user asked.

“I knew those UFOs had something to do with the Kardashians,” one commenter remarked.

“She knows something we don’t,” another agreed, with a suspicious smiley face emoji.

Some social media users declared that Kardashian and her family were actually extraterrestrials themselves.

“So you’re gonna sit here & tell me the kardashians aren’t aliens,” one fan wrote.

“She’s is definitely one of them!!! Ppl wake up!” another commented.

President Joe Biden gave his first public address on the Chinese spy balloon and the other three unidentified flying objects on Thursday. He said that the objects were “most likely balloons tied to private companies, recreation or research institutions studying weather or conducting other scientific research.”

Earlier in the week, White House officials dismissed rumors that the objects were connected to alien activity.

“I don’t think the American people need to worry about aliens with respect to these craft. Period,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby declared at the White House podium Monday.

“There is no indication of aliens or extraterrestrial activity with these recent takedowns,” said White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre. “We wanted to make sure that the American people knew that. All of you knew it. And it was important for us to say that from here because we’ve been hearing a lot about it.”

Kardashian co-founded SKIMS with Emma Grede and Jens Grede in June 2019. The shapewear company is now valued at $3.2 billion.

Biden admin mulls move to open pathways to green cards for temporary agricultural, seasonal migrant workers

FIRST ON FOX: The Biden administration is considering a rule that would open the door to allow temporary agricultural and seasonal workers to be able to apply for permanent residency in the United States, Fox News Digital has learned.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) previously announced it intends to issue a notice of proposed rulemaking to “modernize and reform” the H-2A and H-2B visas — which are used for temporary agricultural workers and temporary seasonal workers.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has said that rule will incorporate policies to address exploitation and abuse, protect workers and increase program efficiencies.

Fox has now learned that the rule process, which is still going through the consideration process at USCIS, would allow workers on those visas to take steps to become permanent residents and obtain a green card.

BIDEN ADMIN GRANTS 64,000+ EXTRA H-2B SEASONAL VISAS, 20,000 TO HAITI AND CENTRAL AMERICA

When workers come to the U.S. on temporary (or “nonimmigrant”) visas, they are expected to come with the intent of returning to their home countries after their visa ends. However, some visas also allow foreign nationals to pursue a green card at the same time, in what is known as a “dual intent.”

The H-2A and H-2B visas explicitly do not allow for dual intent, stating that workers must return home after completing their period of work. But that would change as part of this rule, should it move forward.

“The [rule-making process] also proposes to provide increased flexibility for H-2 workers by extending grace periods, and allowing H-2 workers to take steps toward becoming permanent residents of the United States without being deemed to have abandoned their nonimmigrant intent or their foreign residence solely on that basis,” says a summary of the proposal, seen by Fox Digital.

The rule change would be in line with the Biden administration’s pledge to open up more legal immigration pathways to those seeking to come to the U.S., both via the southern border and elsewhere.

The rule would also strengthen prohibitions on immigration fees being collected from H-2 workers by their employees via salary reductions, and would introduce factors by which a petition could be denied based on disciplinary actions taken against an employer by a government agency such as USCIS or the Department of Labor. The regulation is also envisioned as allowing workers to begin work immediately upon USCIS receiving their petition, rather than only when the visa itself is approved.

In response to a request for comment from Fox News Digital, a USCIS spokesperson said the agency is “committed to promoting policies and procedures that break down barriers in the immigration system, increase access to eligible immigration benefits, enhance protections for temporary nonimmigrant workers, and better ensure the integrity of the H-2A and H-2B programs, and the agency will continue to uphold America’s promise as a nation of welcome and possibility with fairness, integrity, and respect for all we serve.”

Attempts at reforming H-2 visas are not unique to the Biden administration. The Trump administration announced an ultimately incomplete rule-making process to add more flexibility and stop the abuse of the H-2A system, while strengthening protections of American workers.

MCCARTHY RULES OUT AMNESTY FOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS AFTER BIDEN CALLS AT STATE OF THE UNION

The H-2B visa, intended for workers in seasonal occupations such as landscaping and hotel and restaurant work, has proved controversial with both Republicans and Democrats expressing concerns about the abuse of vulnerable foreign workers and fears that it incentivizes employers to use cheap labor rather than employ American workers. Congress has limited the number of H-2B visas to 66,000 a year, but allows DHS to exceed the cap — which it typically does.

However, the inclusion of a way to allow H-2 workers to eventually gain permanent residency in the U.S. is likely to be controversial among immigration hawks, who fear the programs are used to import cheap labor which competes with U.S. workers.  The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) says that the move would further reliance on foreign labor and hurt American workers, as it says it has done for other visas — such as the H-1B for specialty occupations, which is used primarily by the tech industry.

“The clear desire of foreign nationals to get an H-1B visa — primarily because it can lead to permanent residence — has encouraged unscrupulous outsourcing practices while reinforcing employers’ dependency on cheap foreign labor,” FAIR President Dan Stein said in a statement to Fox. “By morphing two additional guest worker programs into de facto permanent immigration streams, the Biden administration is doing so at the detriment of American workers, even during a time of economic uncertainty.”

Stein said the administration “must reconsider this proposed rule and instead help American workers who are struggling to compete with cheap foreign labor.”

The administration, meanwhile, is facing a lawsuit from Republican states over its measures announced last month that would allow 30,000 migrants from Venezuela, Haiti, Cuba and Nicaragua into the U.S. each month. Those states filed a request for a preliminary injunction this week.

Liam Neeson says he doesn't like watching or filming sex scenes: 'I just get embarrassed'

Liam Neeson admitted that he is still uncomfortable with filming sex scenes despite shooting many over his decades-long career.

During an interview with Vanity Fair, the 70-year-old actor shared his thoughts on “You” star Penn Badgley’s recent revelation that he requested to film fewer intimate scenes for the fourth season of his hit Netflix psychological thriller series.

“Yeah, I absolutely agree and support him,”  the “Taken” star told the outlet. “I don’t like to do them.”

He continued, “I’ve done quite a few of sex scenes and I would have preferred to leave it to the imagination, especially for ladies, the actresses.”

LIAM NEESON SAYS HE’S PLANNING TO RETIRE FROM ACTION MOVIES SOON

Neeson also acknowledged that he doesn’t enjoy watching sex scenes in movies or television series.

“I’ll be honest, when I see a sex scene, I just can’t look at them. I just get embarrassed,” he said.

The Ireland native added, “I know they are choreographed and stuff, but I don’t need to see that.”

Badgley recently made headlines when he revealed on his “Popcrushed” podcast that he discussed his wish to no longer film intimate scenes with “You” creator Sera Gamble ahead of the show’s fourth season.

The “Gossip Girl” alum said he specifically asked Gamble, “Can I just do no more intimacy scenes?” He added that ideally there would be “zero” of those moments in the show.

The actor cited the importance he placed on “fidelity” in his marriage as a reason he felt uncomfortable with on-screen intimacy. Badgley married actress Jemima Kirke, 37, in 2017, and they share son James, 2.

In “You,” Badgley plays Joe Goldberg, a charming, dangerous man who becomes obsessed with his romantic targets and takes extreme measures to insert himself into their lives. Over its three previous seasons, the series had become known for its steamy scenes, many of which feature Badgley.

Badgley acknowledged on the podcast that sex is an important aspect of “You” and he didn’t expect it would be removed entirely.

“You can’t take this aspect out of the DNA of the concept, so ‘How much less can you make it?’ was my question to them,” he explained.

The Maryland native shared that he was surprised by Gamble’s supportive reaction to his request.

“She didn’t even bat an eye,” he recalled. “She was really glad that I was that honest, and she was sort of almost empowered. She had a really positive response, she appreciated my directness … and that I was being reasonable and practical … they came back with a phenomenal reduction.”

Earlier this week, Badgley expounded on his view of sex scenes in an interview with Variety. He told that the outlet that he finds them “disturbing” to film.

“It’s not a place where I’ve blurred lines,” Badgley said. “There’s almost nothing I could say with more consecration. That aspect of Hollywood has always been very disturbing to me — and that aspect of the job, that mercurial boundary — has always been something that I actually don’t want to play with at all.”

He stressed, “It’s important to me in my real life to not have them.” When asked for clarification he responded, “My fidelity in my relationship. It’s important to me. And actually, it was one of the reasons that I initially wanted to turn the role down. I didn’t tell anybody that. But that is why.”

During his interview with Vanity Fair, Neeson also reflected on marking a major career milestone with the release of his 100th movie. The actor portrayed private detective Philip Marlowe in the neo-noir crime thriller “Marlowe,” which debuted in theaters on Feb 15.

“Honestly, I feel old and incredibly lucky,” Neeson said.

“I’ve been lucky,” he added. “I never forget that. I also know I created my own luck too.”

Houston man suffering mental episode struck and killed by 18-wheeler while dancing in the street

Police in Houston, Texas say that a man experiencing a manic episode in the middle of the street is dead after being struck by an 18-wheeler.

Fox 26 Houston reported Saturday that deputies with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office were called to an intersection in northwest Houston around 10 p.m. on Friday night and found an unidentified man dead.

Police believe the man was dancing in the middle of the street when he was struck by a big rig driven by an individual who stopped a short distance later and cooperated with officers.

The outlet reported that poor lighting played a factor in the incident and that the family of the man confirmed he was having mental health issues and had suffered an episode earlier in the day.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, the Harris County Sheriff’s Office identified the driver as Gabriel Valdez and say he was operating a 2005 Peterbilt truck tractor pulling a flatbed trailer.

“Valdez was traveling eastbound at the 8400 block of Breen Drive,” the statement said. “Eric Becker was standing in the roadway at the 8400 block of Breen Drive. Becker was reported to have been jumping in front of vehicles driving in the area. Valdez struck Becker with his Peterbilt truck tractor in the eastbound traffic lane.”

Mac McClung wins NBA Slam Dunk Contest with viral finishes

Mac McClung has played in just two NBA games, but he’s now one of the most popular basketball players on the planet.

The 24-year-old grew fame way back in high school for his insane hops, and he showed them off – and some – to win the 2023 NBA Slam Dunk Contest.

He scored 999 points out of a possible 1,000.

McClung signed a two-way contract with the Philadelphia 76ers earlier this week to participate, and he did not disappoint.

On his first dunk, he jumped over two people, tapped the ball with the backboard, and finished with a behind-the-head two-handed slam.

That was just a preview of what was to follow. His second dunk was a two-handed 360 reverse windmill. Read that again (this was the dunk that somehow got a 49).

Those two dunks put him in the finals against Trey Murphy III, and it was quite frankly no contest.

On his first dunk of the championship round, he did a double-pump.

To clinch the win, he channeled his inner Tony Hawk and pulled off a 540 while rocking his high school jersey.

McClung played one game with the Chicago Bulls and another with the Los Angeles Lakers – he spent his college days at both Georgetown and Texas Tech.

The new plant-based sandwich is priced at $6.59, and is currently being tested in Colorado, South Carolina and North Carolina after its premiere on Monday, according to Chick-fil-A’s website.

But the sandwich has sparked debate on TikTok, with some food influencers trying out the meal for fans.

One TikToker, @morganchompz, reviewed the sandwich in a video on Tuesday that went viral with over 1.7 million views.

“It honestly looks like a normal chicken sandwich, but it does have that cauliflower smell,” the influencer told her followers.

Her final verdict was that the sandwich mostly tasted like a “filet of breading.”

Another TikTok user also tried the cauliflower sandwich, but gave it a “10/10” and said that it looked and tasted like the original sandwich.

The hashtag for Chick-fil-A’s cauliflower sandwich has amassed over 416 million views on the platform.

A Chick-fil-A spokesperson defended the cauliflower sandwich in a statement to Fox News Digital.

The spokesperson also acknowledged that customer feedback is important to Chick-fil-A menu options.

“Guest input plays a key role in determining the future of test market menu offerings. We welcome and appreciate feedback on all menu tests, including the Chick-fil-A Cauliflower Sandwich.”

John Travolta's 'Grease' co-star Olivia Newton-John almost turned down Sandy, casting director claims

Olivia Newton-John won countless hearts as Sandy in the blockbuster film “Grease” – but it almost didn’t happen.

“John [Travolta] was set before anybody else was even attached to the movie,” casting director Joel Thurm told Fox News Digital about the 1978 musical. “Paramount figured that they could do ‘Grease’ if John was in it. That was a given.”

“John really wanted Olivia for the role of Sandy,” Thurm shared. “We talked about it and I said, ‘It’s a great idea.’ But my problem was to make Olivia work. Olivia did not want to do it initially. She didn’t leap at this opportunity.”

Joel Thurm recently wrote a tell-all titled "Sex Drugs & Pilot Season: Confessions of a Casting Director."

Thurm shared his account of bringing the beloved film to life in a new memoir titled “Sex, Drugs & Pilot Season: Confessions of a Casting Director,” where he dished on his time in Hollywood.

OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN WAS ‘SHAKEN’ BY PAL ANDY GIBB’S TRAGIC DEATH AT 30, AUTHOR SAYS: SHE ‘FELT VERY PROTECTIVE’

According to Thurm, the singer was “embarrassed” and “humiliated” over how she came across in a British science-fiction movie she made years before titled “Toomorrow.” The 1970 film told the bizarre tale of aliens that kidnapped the pop group Toomorrow, whose “vibrations” from their instruments are needed for survival.

“She met John and she liked him,” Thurm explained. “She also liked the role of Sandy, but she was really cautious. She said, ‘I was embarrassed by the last movie that I did, and I don’t want that to happen again.’ By this time she’s a huge worldwide star and busy on tour. But we all thought she was perfect, that she was Sandy. So, she said, ‘All right, well, in that case, I’d like a screen test.’ That is the first and only time I’ve ever heard of an actor or actress asking for a screen test.”

There were other reasons why Newton-John was hesitant about saying yes to Sandy.

“Olivia didn’t consider herself an actress and was wary of acting in general and taking on a leading role in a high-profile film opposite, in her view, a ‘much’ younger man,” Thurm wrote. “She was 28 and Travolta, 23. She really should have had no worries about that. Forty years later in her Sandy costume, she looked remarkably the same up until her passing.”

Immediately, Thurm and his team prepared for Newton-John’s screen test in hopes of finally winning her over. The scene they chose for her was at the drive-in where Danny (Travolta) makes a move on her, and she rebuffs his advances. What was supposed to be a comical scene was met with silence.

“The first take, there was no laughing from the crew,” Thurm recalled. “And this wasn’t a little screen test. This is a full movie crew on a sound stage. No laughter. Second take, no laughter. Third take, no laughter. At this point, I’m getting really worried. I’m thinking, ‘Oh God, if she thinks it’s her fault that nobody’s laughing, what’s going to happen?’”

“I immediately pulled out from my back pocket a copy of the original ‘Grease’ musical that was running in New York,” Thurm continued. “I went to the same scene and read it. I said, ‘Here’s why it’s not working.’ The movie dialogue was all changed. So I gave the play dialogue instead to John and Olivia. They looked it over, and in the next take, the crew was roaring with laughter. The second take, same thing. So we knew we were home. The tapes were sent to Olivia and John. But by the time we were looking at it in a screening room, Paramount executives already saw it and were thrilled. Olivia was perfect for the role, as we all already knew. And thankfully, Olivia liked it too because we had no backup for the role. She was it.”

There was one person who wasn’t jumping for joy over the dialogue change – producer Allan Carr.

“Allan asked me if I was responsible for the dialogue switch,” said Thurm. “Like a little kid, I said, ‘Yeah! And wasn’t it great?’ He just glared at me and walked away. And from that moment on, I was on his s— list because I changed his dialogue. But the truth is, he screwed up with that dialogue. It wasn’t right for John and Olivia. It just wasn’t as good or funny as the stage version. That, plus a little improvisation from the actors is what you see in the movie. There’s virtually none of the original movie dialogue in the actual movie.”

“As for Olivia, when I think of her, I think of how smart she was,” Thurm shared. “She didn’t just take the role. She wanted to prove herself. That’s how she maintained her position as a worldwide pop star for so many years.”

The “Hopelessly Devoted to You” songstress later recalled how she didn’t immediately say yes to the role of a nice girl who toughens up in the final act and gets her man.

“I worried that at 29 I was too old to play a high school girl,” Newton-John told The Telegraph in 2017. “Everything about making the film was fun, but if I had to pick a favorite moment, it was the transformation from what I call Sandy 1 to Sandy 2. I got to play a different character and wear different clothes, and when I put on that tight black outfit to sing ‘You’re the One That I Want,’ I got a very different reaction from the guys on the set.”

Thurm said the star never lost her sparkle as Sandy.

“In 2019, just before COVID, they showed the movie in Florida and afterward, John and Olivia came out in costume,” he said. “The time we spent together was absolutely wonderful. She was incredibly kind to everybody. She made sure that at every event, she would connect with those in the audience who had questions about cancer or might be going through the same thing.”

“And I think that was part of why she lived so long with this disease,” he shared. “I think it really helped her to talk about it. It helped her when she knew she was helping others… Her spirit was always up. She was just an incredibly special human being. I miss her.”

The entertainer passed away in August 2022 at age 73 following a lengthy battle with breast cancer.
